    The Swell Season

The Swell Seasons self-titled debut record is finally available on LP for the first time. The band has went on to wider success through their work in the Academy Award winning film, Once and have since issued both a soundtrack and a second record on Anti Records. However, this was the quiet debut release that started it all, recorded shortly prior to the filming of the movie.

At the time Glen Hansard of The Frames had recently teamed up with classically trained Czech vocalist and pianist, Marketa Irglova to write a handful of affecting songs and compositions for their friend and filmmaker, John Carney. Some of these songs would go onto make the film, Once while others didnt. The two choose to issue this record on CD and digitally shortly after thinking it unlikely that there would ever be an actual soundtrack or distribution of the film they had just completed. Of course this could not have been further from what ultimately happened.

Listening back through The Swell Season in comparison to Frames records, the songs on Once or their recent record, Strict Joy one cant help but be struck by just how intimate the whole affair feels. Recorded in a small studio in the Czech Republic with a limited budget the two are joined only by two other string players giving the songs a sense of space and isolation. A feeling that works particularly well for this batch of songs and in particular a vinyl record.

The record stands on its own as a complete piece on par with some of the more personal musical statements of the last few years. The Swell Season was released prior to the Once soundtrack. When it came time to put the soundtrack together the band rerecorded four of the songs for the soundtrack. The other six songs are specific to this release and not available elsewhere.

    Frames

The debut Brian Haas & Matt Chamberlain album Frames features 11 instrumental compositions that spiral through the tempered scale. A through-composed work for piano and percussion, it was written entirely by Haas, the internationally renowned pianist and founder of Jacob Fred Jazz Odyssey. Now based in Santa Fe, Haas wrote Frames as a suite, equally influenced by stride piano masters Earl Hines, James P. Johnson and Fats Waller; the early minimalist works of Philip Glass and Steve Reich; and the lush aesthetic of modernists James Blake, Flying Lotus and Nigel Godrich. The music is pastoral, intensely melodic and tells the story of an imagined human life.

"After several years of non-stop touring with my band Jacob Fred Jazz Odyssey I felt completely drained," explains Haas. "I was pulled to move to the high desert and mountains of Sante Fe; the space/distance from the road, the unearthly view from my house and the strange hum of my new surroundings inspired this music. What started as an exercise in all 12 keys turned into Frames."

Brian Haas has recorded 21 albums and toured the world for two decades with Jacob Fred Jazz Odyssey, a band he started while a student at The University of Tulsa. Grammy Award-winning drummer Matt Chamberlain is one of the most revered musicians of his time having toured and recorded with the likes of Brad Mehldau, Edie Brickell & The New Bohemians, Critters Buggin, Tori Amos, Bill Frisell and Frank Ocean among others.

    A Broken Frame

Martin Gore has famously noted that Depeche Mode stopped worrying about its future when the first post-Vince Clarke-departure single, See You, placed even higher on the English charts than anything else Clarke had done with them. Such confidence carries through all of A Broken Frame, a notably more ambitious effort than the pure pop/disco of the band's debut. With arranging genius Alan Wilder still one album away from fully joining the band, Frame became very much Gore's record, writing all the songs and exploring various styles never again touched upon in later years. Satellite and Monument take distinct dub/reggae turns, while Shouldn't Have Done That delivers its slightly precious message about the dangers of adulthood with a spare arrangement and hollow, weirdly sweet vocals.

Much of the album follows in a dark vein, forsaking earlier sprightliness, aside from tracks like A Photograph of You and The Meaning of Love, for more melancholy reflections about love gone wrong as Leave in Silence and My Secret Garden. More complex arrangements and juxtaposed sounds, such as the sparkle of breaking glass in Leave in Silence, help give this underrated album even more of an intriguing, unexpected edge. Gore's lyrics sometimes veer on the facile, but David Gahan's singing comes more clearly to the fore throughout -- things aren't all there yet, but they were definitely starting to get close.

Hand Numbered Limited Edition Framed Lithographic Print

12 x 5 by The Rolling Stones was their October 1964 release that told the world that they loved the blues and rock 'n roll. The evolution from blues to rock accelerated on this, their second American LP. 12 X 5 included material recorded by the Stones at Chicago's Chess Studios (home to the band's idols Muddy Waters and Howlin' Wolf) during their first US tour. Though this album of the group's early R&B period kicks off with covers from unsurprising sources (Chuck Berry's Around and Around,) Mick and Keith waste little time in displaying their own compositional acumen.

'Once' is a 2006 Irish musical film written and directed by John Carney, former bassist for Irish band The Frames. Set in Dublin, this naturalistic drama stars musicians Glen Hansard (singer of, again, popular rock band The Frames) and MarkÉta Irglová as struggling musicians during an eventful week as they write, rehearse and record songs that reveal their unique love story. Collaborators prior to making the film, Hansard and Irglová composed and performed all of the original songs in the movie.

Hansard and Irglová's song 'Falling Slowly' received a 2008 Academy Award for Best Original Song and the soundtrack as a whole also received a Grammy nomination.

Steven Spielberg was quoted as saying A little movie called 'Once' gave me enough inspiration to last the rest of the year. When informed of Spielberg's comments, director John Carney told Sky News, in the end of the day, he's just a guy with a beard

    Seer (Awaiting Repress)

Received a 9.0 Best New Music rating from Pitchfork. The Seer took 30 years to make. It's the culmination of every previous Swans album as well as any other music I've ever made, been involved in, or imagined. But it's unfinished, like the songs themselves. It's one frame in a reel. The frames blur, blend and will eventually fade.

The songs began on an acoustic guitar, then were fleshed out with (invaluable) help from my friends, then were further tortured and seduced in rehearsals, live, and in the studio, and now they await further cannibalism and force-feeding as we prepare to perform some of them live, at which point they'll mutate further, endlessly, or perhaps be discarded for a while.

Despite what you might have heard or presumed, my quest is to spread light and joy through the world. My friends in Swans are all stellar men. Without them I'm a kitten, an infant. Our goal is the same: ecstasy! -Michael Gira

MAX, the upcoming 12 EP from WA based songwriter and sound-crafter Karl Blau, will be Blau's first major release since his LP Zebra dropped in 2009. Recorded at Dub Narcotic in Olympia, Washington, MAX is a snack pack of subdued, soulful, introspective emotional funk that shows Blau at his best. When he sings I scrape at the barnacles that build on the frame; I take old binoculars & peer in again, on the track Celebrated by Singing you're left with the feeling that having some me time between a pair of headphones is better than any prescription a doctor coud give; and it feels good.

    Didn't He Ramble

Didn't He Ramble, the second solo outing from acclaimed singer songwriter Glen Hansard, will be released September 18 via Anti- Records. The new album is his first in over three years and follows 2012's solo debut Rhythm & Repose, which Billboard hailed as "Hansard at his most engaging." Didn't He Ramble was produced by Thomas Bartlett (The National, Sufjan Stevens), a frequent collaborator of Hansard's, and Grammy winner and former Frames band-mate David Odlum (Paloma Faith, Tinariwen). The album, which was recorded in New York, Dublin, Chicago and France, is Hansard's most intimate and elegant record since his work in Once and features guest appearances by John Sheahan (Dubliners), Sam Beam (Iron and Wine) and Sam Amidon. Glen Hansard is the celebrated principal songwriter and vocalist/guitarist for the influential Irish group The Frames. Whether busking the streets of Dublin, where he got his start, or headlining a gig, Hansard has garnered a reputation as an unparalleled frontman. Hansard is also one half of the acclaimed duo The Swell Season. In 2007, he and Czech songstress MarkÉta Irglová took home the Academy Award for Best Original Song for "Falling Slowly" off the Once soundtrack. In 2013,the Broadway adaptation, Once The Musical, won eight Tony Awards including the top musical prize. Garden Window

Carrying the weight of the luminance and spacy textures from their 2009 EP, The Death of Day, Atlanta, Ga foursome O'Brother have grown into sounds of scorching heaviness and punctuated melodic interruptions that act as puzzles in-between the groaning feedback of Garden Window, the band's debut full length. With Garden Window displaying more density, the songs themselves bask in longer time frames and dynamic intensity the whole way out. Close friends Andy Hull and Robert McDowell of Manchester Orchestra stepped in as producers for Garden Window.

    Follow Me Down: Vanguard's Psychedelic Era 1966 - 1970

Deep within the Vanguard Records vaults lies a curious story framed by some of the craziest and most mysterious green and purple paisleyd rock music to come out of the mid-to-late-'60s. This compilation marks the first time the Vanguard label has gone through its archives to hand-select tracks from their best lost psychedelic records and 45s.

Highlights include the extraordinary rock version of Racing in the Street, the never-before-released original recordings of Because the Night, Fire, and Rendezvous, the supreme pop opus Someday (We'll Be Together), the hilarious Ain't Good Enough for You, the superb soul-based vocal performance on The Broken Hearted, the utterly haunting Breakaway, and the now finally released, fully orchestrated masterpiece and title song, The Promise. All 21 songs have been mixed by Springsteen's long-time collaborator, Bob Clearmountain. According to long-time manager/producer Jon Landau, There isn't a weak card in this deck. Strict Joy

The Swell Season are Glen Hansard (from the Irish band the Frames) and Marketa Irglova (classically trained Czech pianist and vocalist). In 2007, Once, a film about two people meeting and falling in love on the streets of Dublin, became an indie phenomenon, as audiences everywhere responded to the unassuming charm of the two leads, Glen and Marketa, and the beautiful music they made together. On the way to going gold, the Once soundtrack brought the Swell Season onto the stage of the Academy Awards, where the band won the Best Original Song award, and into the hearts of the audience and host Jon Stewart. Since then they have toured to sold-out venues as the Swell Season, Once has become a perennial top DVD rental and seller, and now the film is in development for a Broadway musical to open early in 2010.

Now comes the much anticipated follow-up, Strict Joy, and from the first notes of first track Low Rising, the musical magic audiences found in Once is back. The band returns to map the rocky peaks and valleys of relationships in songs like the haunting I Have Loved You Wrong, a Marketa feature, and the driving, anthemic The Rain. A feature documentary will make the festival rounds this fall, covering the making of Once and Glen and Marketa's musical coming together, but in the meantime, the beautiful songs of Strict Joy will tell their story.

    A Season On The Line

    Limited Edition Of 1,000 Copies

A Season on the Line, the new EP from Glen Hansard, the celebrated principal songwriter and vocalist/guitarist for the influential Irish group The Frames. This EP follows Hansard's Grammy-nominated (Best Folk Album) second solo outing Didn't He Ramble, which was released last fall. During his worldwide tour in support of Didn't He Ramble, two songs continued to appear in his set-"Didn't He Ramble" and "Way Back in the Way Back When"-though neither were included on the recent album or on any official release. This is all part of Hansard's creative process-honing songs in a live setting. Due to popular demand, Hansard included the two songs on the new EP. Recorded at Chicago's Electrical Audio Studios on a day off between shows and featuring his touring band, "Didn't He Ramble" and "Way Back in the Way Back When" bristle with all the energy that made them staples of the live show. A Season on the Line is rounded out by the tracks "Let Me In" and "Return," both of which are from the intimate recording sessions for Didn't He Ramble.

Charlie Is My Darling: Ireland 1965

ABKCO Films presents a meticulously restored and full-realized version of this first-ever, legendary, but never released film. Shot during a quick tour of Ireland just weeks after (I Can't Get No) Satisfaction hit #1 on the charts, The Rolling Stones Charlie Is My Darling - Ireland is an intimate, behind-the-scenes diary of life on the road with the young Stones. It features the first professionally filmed concert performances of the band and documents the early frenzy of their fans and the riots the band's appearances inspired. The band is shown traveling through the Irish countryside by train; dashing from cabs to cramped, basement dressing rooms through screaming hordes of fans. Motel rooms host impromptu songwriting sessions and familiar classics are heard in their infancy as riff and lyric are united. Charlie Is My Darling is the invaluable frame that captures the spark about to combust into The Greatest Rock and Roll Band in the World!

    Almost Blue

Costellos Soulful Country & Western Covers Album Tackles Standard Tunes by George Jones, Hank Williams, Gram Parsons, and More

Expertly Played 1981 Set Marks the Second of the Encyclopedic Pop Musicians Many Forays Into Multiple Styles

Half-Speed Mastered from the Original Master Tapes: Knockout Sonics Present Costellos Close-Up Vocals, Steve Nieves Piano, and the Pedal-Steel Guitars in Great Relief

Elvis Costello was so enamored with American country music when he finally discovered it, he was motivated to record Almost Blue. Renowned as one of the most passionate and enthusiastic covers albums ever made, the 12-song set finds the iconic singer/songwriter interpreting standards by the likes of Hank Williams, Gram Parsons, George Jones, Merle Haggard, and other legends. Replete with heartbreak, lonesomeness, boozing, cheating, and dreaming, its laden with country and westerns customary themes and dignified by one of the finest performances of Costello and the Attractions peerless career.

Half-speed mastered from the original master tapes, Mobile Fidelitys numbered limited edition 180g LP opens up the soundstages, clears previously muddled midrange frequencies, and places the imaging of the various country-tuned instruments into clear focus. For the first time, listeners can hear just how much of himself Costello invests in the vocal performances, while the Attractions dont miss a beat, particularly pianist Steve Nieve and guest musician John McFee. Moreover, the strings (when employed) take on new life, and the records cover art, a take-off on Kenny Burrells Midnight Blue, is faithfully reproduced.

At the time of the albums recording in 1981, Costello was admittedly emotionally shattered. The title of the effort isnt merely coincidental. Feeling dejected and disenchanted, the vocalist had been put through the ringer: His pop stardom yielded one incredible record after another, but Costellos marriage was in tatters, his behavior deplorable, and his reputation tarnished by a famous drunken incident that shamed him for decades. In addition, he chose to follow his string of original LPs up with the soul- and R&B-minded Get Happy, a creative masterwork that nonetheless caused some of his mainstream fans to believe hed abandon his hit-making pedigree.

So he did what any self-respecting, astute musician would want to do: Cut a country and western record steeped in heartbreak, fragility, sadness, despair, and beer-glass-raising spirit. Largely informed by the stacks of country LPs he bought in used shops during U.S. tours, and in the ideal frame of mind, Costello sought out not to make standards such as Sweet Dreams, Too Far Gone, Honey Hush, and Tonight the Bottle Let Me Down his own but to put a unique spin on the darkness, surprise, soulfulness, foreboding, and authenticity that they contain within.

With each note, Costello succeeds and exceeds expectations, turning in versions that sound both old and new. Such timelessness, and the confluence of contemporary and traditional, distinguishes Almost Blue from nearly every other country tribute album made by pop/rock artists before and since. Costello and the Attractions embody the deep sentiments attached to these weeping ballads, tear-jerking lullabies, honky-tonk rave-ups, and playful shuffles in an incredibly convincing manner. Producer George Sherrill, famous for working with the likes of Tammy Wynette, George Jones, and Marty Robbins, and brought on board specifically for the project, frames the music with the perfect blend of grit and professionalism.
