Silverchair's debut album, Frogstomp, faithfully follows the alternative rock tradition of Nirvana and Pearl Jam, which means that the group of Australian teenagers winds up sounding not like their idols, but like Stone Temple Pilots and Bush. For their age, their instrumental capabilities are quite impressive, as the guitars and vocals growl with the force of rockers in their early 20s.

    Paul's Tomb: A Triumph

Three years in the making, Paul's Tomb: A Triumph marks Frog Eyes' thunderous, frantic, fiery return. This is a slow-brewed masterpiece that is unmistakably Frog Eyes, a new album that was very much worth the wait. On this point we feel unassailable: Frog Eyes keeps getting better and better. Frog Eyes are equally informed by Scott Walker and Roxy Music, Nuggets collections and the Everly Brothers. But in truth, Frog Eyes' recordings sound like nothing else but Frog Eyes.

    Family Jewels

    Import

The Family Jewels on vinyl for the first time! Diamandis' debut studio album - it debuted at number five on the UK Albums Chart with first-week sales of 27,618 copies, and was eventually certified gold by the British Phonographic Industry. Produced by Liam Howe (Ex-Sneaker Pimps), Biff Stannard (Kylie) and Pascal Gabriel (Ladyhawke), The Family Jewels is part autobiography/part fairytale with the sound ranging from the uber-shiny pop of "Shampain" to the fragile elegance of "Obsessions" and "Numb", the pop-punk of "Girls" and the joyful quirkiness of "Mowgli's Road" and "Hermit the Frog". This steely determination even fed into the production of the album with Marina making producer Liam Howe record 482 vocal takes for one song.

The end result is an album that functions as a fully formed piece of art. Heartbreaking and emotional at times as exemplified in "I Am Not A Robot", which reached no.26 in the UK Charts, Marina lays herself open and vulnerable for her fans, the diamonds.

Diamandis was ranked in second place on the Sound of 2010 poll organised by BBC, behind English singer-songwriter Ellie Goulding. Mowgli's Road was released as the lead single from Diamandis' debut studio album on 13 November 2009. It was followed by Hollywood on 1 February, which reached number 12 on the UK Singles Chart.

    Morrison Hotel

Released in 1970 in the wake of Jim Morrisons infamous indecency bust, the Doors next-to-last album Morrison Hotel found the band reinventing themselves as one of the greatest bar bands ever with a thrilling bluesy, no-frills approach and harder edged sound. The album shot up to #4 on the charts on the strength of the standards Waiting For The Sun, Roadhouse Blues Peace Frog and Ship Of Fools.

    Pom Pom

Across its 17 tracks and 69 minutes, pom pom is unfiltered Ariel Pink,
featuring infectious tales of romance, murder, frog princes and Jell-O.
The record sees the Los Angeles native strike it out alone, returning to
the solo moniker he has adopted for well over a decade.

From demented kiddie tune collaborations with the legendary Kim Fowley (songs such as 'Jell-O' and 'Plastic Raincoats In The Pig Parade' were
written with Fowley in his hospital room during his recent battle with
cancer), to beatific, windswept pop ('Put Your Number In My Phone',
'Dayzed Inn Daydreams'), scuzz-punk face-melters ('Goth Bomb', 'Negativ Ed'), and carnival dub psychedelia ('Dinosaur Carebears'), pom pom
could very well be Ariel Pink's magnum opus.

Speaking about the record, Ariel says that "although this is the first
"solo" record credited to my name, it is by far the least "solo" record I
    have ever recorded."

    The Life Pursuit

Back In Print For The First Time In Years

Oh to be free and frivolous, like Stuart Murdoch and his extensive cast of players as they engage The Life Pursuit. There's no Take Your Carriage Clock and Shove It or Get Me Away from Here, I'm Dying on this disc. Life has gotten easier, it seems, since Belle and Sebastian's early days. To boot, since 2003's Dear Catastrophe Waitress, the Belle cast has indulged a more 70s-era set of influences: Isn't that Norman Greenbaum's Spirit in the Sky beat on the funny White Collar Boy, a near sequel to Step Into My Office, Baby? And how about the T-Rex touch on the opening of The Blues Are Still Blue? No worries, Belle and Sebastian retain their gleam flawlessly. A jaunty lift is still in their step, a carefree abandon that charms even as it also reaches to the 70s for the funk-meets-psychedelia, Song for Sunshine. It's bright and breezy throughout (the titles tell some of the story: Another Sunny Day and Funny Little Frog), with memorably decorous, familiar bouncing rhythms marking much of the album. The downtone Dress Up in You and Mornington Crescent are spare and lovely, wide-open in their pacing. All the same, For the Price of a Cup of Tea, almost triggers a sing-along with just its name. --Andrew Bartlett

    Black Sheep (Awaiting Repress)

Yonder Mountain String Band nationally releases its sixth full-length studio album, Black Sheep, on its own Frog Pad Records. On Black Sheep, Yonder Mountain continues to redefine bluegrass music, expanding the traditional acoustic genre beyond its previously established boundaries by pushing the envelope into the realms of rock n' roll and improvisation. Produced by YMSB, Black Sheep marks the first time the band utilizes (throughout an entire record) the conventional five-piece bluegrass instrumental line-up of guitar, mandolin, banjo, fiddle and bass. Two standout musicians, violinist Allie Kral and mandolin virtuoso Jacob Jolliff, were recruited for the recording and the forthcoming tour dates.

With the release of Black Sheep, Yonder Mountain begins a new era. It's instantaneously apparent that Black Sheep is the work of a new Yonder Mountain String Band, one with a strong commitment to re-exhibiting itself, broadening its parameters following the departure of a founding member. While it's certainly recognizable as YMSB music, there's undeniably a raw aesthetic to the studio tracks - a sense of daring is embedded in both the instrumental interaction between the five singular players and in the lyrical content of each song.

Primus fans will dig it because it harkens aback to the band's early material. But it is also very eclectic, reminiscent of old Peter Gabriel, Tom Waits and Pink Floyd, explains virtuoso bassist, songwriter, and Primus frontman Les Claypool. This is my first real attempt at a solo record. Its been about coming up with ideas and then finding the right people and instruments to flesh them out. The album features guests such as Norwood Fisher and Fish Fisher from Fishbone, and Warren Haynes of The Allman Brothers and Govt Mule. Purple Onion will be released on Les own Prawn Song Records.

    Julia With Blue Jeans On

Since January 2010, Spencer Krug has used Moonface as a venue for home-recorded instrumental and
conceptual experimentation, expanding the ideas he developed collaboratively with Wolf Parade, Sunset
Rubdown, and Frog Eyes. Releases under this moniker have come quickly, each distinct from the other. The
Dreamland EP and Organ Music Not Vibraphone Like I'd Hoped were conceptual excursions merging
instrumental and thematic fixations. After moving from Montreal to Helsinki, Krug teamed up with the
Finnish band Siinai to create a lush rock record-2012's Heartbreaking Bravery-driven by the dark despair
of a breakup. Staying in Helsinki, Krug set off on yet another creative departure, driven by a rediscovery of
love and a reconsideration of the Moonface persona he'd created for himself. The quietly stunning Julia with
Blue Jeans On is the fourth Moonface release, bringing a degree of intimacy and self-reflection unlike
anything Krug has produced to date.

There are only two sonic elements on Julia: Spencer Krug's voice and his piano. Richly recorded, they interact
seamlessly with one another. On the opening track "Barbarian," the piano unfolds with the hypnotic energy
of Keith Jarrett's Koln Concert, Krug's right hand doubling his vocal melody. On the closing track "Your
Chariot Awaits," Krug's voice recedes after a minute as the piano swells for an extended showcase with
modern classical undertones. After nearly a decade, across a number of guises, we are well-acquainted with
Krug's inimitable town-crier vocals; on Julia, we are introduced to a facet of his musical skill that feels
conservatory-trained. This is Krug as singer-songwriter, moving beyond star poses to a vision that is at once
    more elegant and comfortable.

Or, in Krug's own language, on "Barbarian II": "I have chewed through my beautiful narrative." Much of Julia
is taken with this chewing. "Love the House You're In" opens by masquerading as self-pity, with a statement
that reads like a press release from someone who's given up. "I regretfully withdraw my offer to try and
improve myself," Krug gently sings, establishing a self-reflexive foundation upon which he builds the album's
most universal, humanistic sentiment, and which he delivers via its most soaring melody.

Purposeful self-evaluation is one tactic for reinvention, but as Krug illustrates on Julia's title track, everyday
occurrences can prove transformative as well. The sight of a woman, clad in denim, briefly visible at the
bottom of a staircase, he learns, is capable of "obliterating everything I've ever written down." "Julia" is an ode
in the classical sense, pivoting around the beauty inherent in the most simple, taken-for-granted sights. Krug
acknowledges this, opening the song by admitting that "it's a madman's game, making the commonplace
unreal." What he leaves out in this admission, however, is the key to the countless charms of Julia with Blue
Jeans On: by expertly playing this ridiculous game, he can erase the madness that spawned it.

    Cry Cry Cry

    Etching On Side D

The soaring choruses, rousing anthems, sprawling guitars and chaotic keys that make up Wolf Parade are on proud display over the course of Cry Cry Cry, the band's thunderous first album in seven years. That unique combination of sounds and influences, spearheaded by electric co-frontmen Spencer Krug and Dan Boeckner-a complex yet relatable, energetic brew of glam, prog, synth-rock, and satisfying discomfort-helped define 2000s indie rock with three critically celebrated albums, and propelled a growing Wolf Parade fandom even after the band went on a then-indefinite hiatus in 2010.

The upcoming return marks their first to be produced by Pacific Northwest legend John Goodmanson (Bikini Kill, Sleater-Kinney, Unwound) at Robert Lang Studios outside of Seattle, and is accompanied by a renewed focus and the creativity of a band that took their time getting exactly where they needed to be. It's also a homecoming to Sub Pop, which released all three of the band's previous albums. "The band itself is almost a fifth member of the band, something more or at least different than the sum of its parts," says Krug. "We don't know who or what is responsible for our sound, it's just something that naturally and consistently comes from this particular combo of musicians." In the time apart, the band scattered geographically and focused on family and other work--Spencer on his solo project Moonface, Dan on his bands Handsome Furs, Operators, and Divine Fits (with Spoon's Britt Daniel), and Dante De Caro on records with Carey Mercer's Frog Eyes and Blackout Beach. And that time allowed for an even stronger, tighter band to emerge. Wolf Parade have always tended to make albums that react against their previous work.

Compared to 2010's relatively sparse rocker Expo 86, Cry Cry Cry is more deliberate in its arrangements and embrace of the studio process, as evidenced by songs like "Valley Boy," a Bowie-inflected anthem for which Spencer wrote lyrics after Leonard Cohen died the day before the 2016 election. "You're Dreaming," also influenced by the election and the spinning shock that followed, is driving, urgent power pop that draws from artists like Tom Petty and what Dan calls one of his "default languages" for writing music. The swirly, synth-heavy crescendo of "Artificial Life" takes on the struggle of artists and at-risk communities. The album carries a sense of uprising that is not unrelated to Wolf Parade's renewed determination to drive the band forward in uncertain times. Welcome to Cry Cry Cry.

Swan Lake is the musical collaboration of Daniel Bejar (Destroyer, New Pornographers), Spencer Krug (Sunset Rubdown, Wolf Parade), and Carey Mercer (Frog Eyes, Blackout Beach). While their debut was a beautifully weaved mash up of disparate songwriting styles, this second effort reflects a more stripped down, deliberate approach to collaboration. It's as if they really tried to just make nice songs together. LP contains digital download coupon.
