    The Gambler

Kenny Rogers took a bit of a chance in releasing this loosly based concept album at the time, but boy, did it pay off! Sales for the album went through the roof, as the title track and She Believes In Me became pop crossover hits, with the latter reaching the pop Top 10. Later, The Gambler was turned into a string of made-for-television movies. With over 35 million albums sold, this hit includes Rogers' number one hits The Gambler and She Believes In Me.

    Rat City

Memphis based Jack Oblivian (aka Jack Yarber) was a founding member of the garage-bands The Compulsive Gamblers and The Oblivians but he has contributed to a dizzying array of projects over the years, including Andre Williams, Jack Oblivian & the Tennessee Tearjerkers, The Cool Jerks, '68 Comeback, King Louie & His Loose Diamonds, Greg Oblivian & the Tip Tops, Jack Oblivian & The Cigarillos, The Natural Kicks and Tav Falco's Panther Burns.

Jack Yarber began his professional music career in high school, appearing alongside high school friend and future Squirrel Nut Zippers founder Jimbo Mathus in the Corinth, Mississippi, based Johnny Vomit & the Dry Heaves. Yarber played drums in the outfit, which credited him as Johnny Goopa. After moving to Memphis, his encounter with fellow musican Greg Cartwright led to the formation of the Compulsive Gamblers. The Oblivians formed in 1993 as a side project to the Compulsive Gamblers, the members of the Oblivians shared songwriting and each member supplied vocals, guitar work, and percussion on albums, switching instruments during live shows. The Oblivians lasted from 1993 until 1998, at which time Yarber and Cartwright left the band to reform the Compulsive Gamblers. The second incarnation of the Gamblers lasted from 1998 to 2003. The Oblivians returned to the stage in 2009 for a sold-out international tour with the Gories.

His collaborations with the cream of the Memphis music crop guarantee that the players on Rat City fit the bill like the proverbial glove. Jack Oblivian channels the spirit of proto punk as well as blues, country and junkyard rock; his songs evoke haunting, echo-y swamp boogie that will walk you down that dark alley without fear.

    Jack-O Is The Flipside Kid

Jack Yarber began his professional music career in high school, appearing alongside high school friend and future Squirrel Nut Zippers founder Jimbo Mathus in the Corinth, Mississippi, based Johnny Vomit % the Dry Heaves. Yarber played drums in the outfit, which credited him as Johnny Goopa.

In the summer of 1987, Yarber moved to Memphis, Tennessee, to play music with his cousin. Yarber and his cousin played together using a number of band names, eventually releasing a new-wave 7 under the name, The End. The tracks You Never Called and People Talk were recorded at Phillips Studio in Memphis, Tennessee. That vinyl single marked Yarber's first appearance on record. By 1989 the two had diverged musically and Yarber's cousin left town, effectively ending their partnership.

Following the breakup of The End, Yarber's encounter with fellow musician Greg Cartwright led to the formation of the Compulsive Gamblers. Desptie recording two 7 albums and a handful of home recordings, the band was unable to garner record lable interest until after he success of their next band, the Oblivians. The Oblivians formed in 1993 as as side project to the Compulsive Gamblers, and included former Gambler Greg Cartwright, as well as future Goner Records founder, Eric Friedl. The members of the Oblivians all shared writing and recording responsibilities. Each member supplied vocals, guitar work, and percussion on albums and switched between instruments during live shows. The Oblivians lasted from 1993 until 1998, at which time Yarber and Cartwright left the band to reform the Compulsive Gamblers. The second incarnation of the Gamblers lasted form 1998 to 2003, when the bandmembers again went seperate ways.

After pursuing a brief solo career, Yarber teamed up with Scott Bomar to form the Tearjerkers. As Bomar became more and more involved with film scoring, Yarber began to take a more active role in the band, ultimately taking over as lead songwriter after Bomar's departure. With Yarber in control of the group, the band was rechristened the Tennessee Tearjerkers. At the same time as Yarber was writing songs with the Tearjerkers, he was also contributing in various ways to a number of side projects including, the Knaughty Knights, the Limes, and South Filthy which included collaborations with longtime associates Walter Daniels and Monsieur Jeffrey Evans.

    Love Beach

Remastered For The First Time In 24 Bit / High-Density Formats From The Original Tapes

'Love Beach' (1978) is the final ELP studio album from the 1970s classic era, expertly remastered for the first time in 24 bit / High-Density formats from the original tapes. The LP finds the band back to their intimate best - producing a lighter, more concise and accessible album - and jamming in the relaxed atmosphere of a studio in Nassau, Bahamas. As usual, ELP produced an excellent, technically accomplished mix of classical music and electronics, once again unearthing their extraordinary musical chemistry. Includes fans' / live favorites 'The Gambler' and the rockin' 'Canario' (based on Rodrigo's 'Fantasia Para Un Gentilhombre'). Side 2 is taken up by the superb 'Memoirs Of An Officer And A Gentleman' - one of their finest suites, highlighting voice, piano, and marching drums...

Formed in 1970, Emerson, Lake & Palmer were torchbearers of the progressive rock sound and one of rock's first supergroups. The world-conquering, stadium-filling prog giants helped to broaden the audience for the genre from hundreds of thousands into tens of millions and were one the most commercially successful rock bands of the 1970s. Their first 7 album releases all made the U.K. albums chart top 10 and U.S. top 20.

Depending on whom you ask, Jack 'Oblivian' Yarber is either a rock legend or an obsolute unknown. And no one knows this dichotomy better than Yarber, who may be Memphis' most infuential active rock musician.

The list of noteworthy bands Yarber has been a member of over the years is massive and includes Johnny Vomit & the Dry Heaves, new-wavers the End, '68 Comeback, Knaughty Knights, and Tav Falco's Panther Burns. Two of Yarber's former bands, the Compulsive Gamblers and the Oblivians, have seen their reputation and following swell in the decade since their demise, especially the Oblivians, whose international fan base borders on rabid. Due largely to his stint in these bands, both partnerships with Greg Cartwrigth, now of Reigning Sound, Yarber has been an acknowledged influence on artists such as the White Stripes, the Hives, and Jay Reatard.

In the years since, Yarber has toured and released a string of successful solo albums under the Jack O & the Tennessee Tearjerkers moniker. Originally conceived in 2000 as a partnership with former Impala and current Bo-Keys bassist Scott Bomar, the band quickly morphed into Yarber's solo incarnation after Bomar became occupied with film scoring and production work. The band has had a revolving door for side players ever since, at different times including current River City Tanlines John Bonds and Terrence Bishop, Neighborhood Texture Jam guitarist John Wittmore, the Reigning Sound's Greg Roberson, Bluff City Backslider Adam Woodard, and a host of other recognizable local musicians.

    Mourning In The Morning

For Mourning In The Morning, his 1969 album debut on Atlantic Records, southpaw blues guitar legend Otis Rush journeyed from his Chicago home to Fame Recording Studios in Muscle Shoals, Alabamaa burg best known for seminal soul platters. Backed by a horn-powered band that included a young Duane Allman on rhythm guitar, Otis slashing axe and anguished vocals glowed on the tortured Youre Killing My Love, remakes of his Cobra Records classics My Love Will Never Die and It Takes Time, and a stunning revival of B.B. Kings Gamblers Blues. Half the set consisted of new compositions from producers Mike Bloomfield and Nick Gravenites, and Rushs mile-wide string bending on a shimmering instrumental version of Aretha Franklins Baby I Love You is utterly breathtaking.

    Shattered

Shattered will be Reigning Sound's first album for Merge and the first full LP
by the group since 2009's Love and Curses.

The band's principal songwriter/member is Greg Cartwright, who's been
leading the shifting cast of characters since 2001. You may be familiar with
some of the band's work, as this album is preceded by five studio efforts as
well as numerous EPs and live records. Or perhaps some of Greg's other
projects have been on your musical radar: The Oblivians, Parting Gifts,
Compulsive Gamblers, 68 Comeback, Deadly Snakes, Detroit Cobras.
Regardless, as far as Reigning Sound is concerned, this is as good a place
to start as any because through many line-up changes and mood swings,
the central, constant feature is the way Greg writes songs. This particular
embodiment of the band includes longtime keyboardist Dave Amels, who
joined the band seven years ago when Reigning Sound recorded an album,
consisting mostly of Cartwright's songs, with former Shangri-Las lead singer
    Mary Weiss.

Dave proved to be key in putting together the current line-up as well. About
three years ago, Greg was asked to make a promotional EP for Scion.
Recordings were set to take place in Nashville where he had lined up two
local friends to round out the band, but as fate would have it, both had to
bow out at the last minute. Luckily, Mike Catanese, Benny Trokan, and Mikey
Post-Dave Amels' bandmates in Brooklyn soul group The Jay Vons-were
up for the task. The four flew to Nashville, learned the songs, and recorded
them with Greg in a couple of days. Thus was born the group that you
hear on Shattered. They've been touring and playing together ever since, and
Shattered proves that the musical union is both exciting and consistent for fans
    of Cartwright's songwriting.

The album was recorded at Daptone's Brooklyn studio (where drummer
Mikey works in the office) and masterfully engineered by Wayne Douglas.
The recordings are warm and punchy, a mixed bag of rockers, ballads, and
something in between. There are only 11 songs on the album, but the band
    reckons it's just right.

Widely considered one of the greatest songwriters of his generation, Townes Van Zandt has been hailed by such singers as Steve Earle, Emmylou Harris and Willie Nelson. Fat Possum is proud to reissue In The Beginning, a collection of ten recordings produced by Jack Clement (Johnny Cash, U2, Waylon Jennings) in 1966.
