1980 Set First of Duo's Record-Breaking Trilogy of Smash Albums

Self-Produced Album Marks Pair's Transition Towards Fusion of Sleek Pop, Melodic New Wave, and Blue-Eyed Soul
Divine Sonics: Spacious, Polished Production Shines on Mobile Fidelity Reissue, Mastered from the Original Master Tapes
Daryl Hall has inferred that if Voices failed to catch fire, it would have likely signaled the end of he and John Oates' recording career together. Suffice it to say that the 1980 effort not only caught on-it established a production and songwriting template that would help largely define the decade. The album also propelled Hall and Oates into the mainstream and turned them into superstars, placing them at the top of the charts for a multi-year run during which the duo proved superior singers, master songwriters, and visionary producers.
Mastered from the original master tapes and pressed on 180 gram LP at RTI, Mobile Fidelity's reissue at last affords this pop classic an expansive, engaging, dynamic reach absent from all prior editions. Self-produced, the record's sonics were key to its success. As evidenced by the greater information and finer details found in this analog edition's grooves, the polished, sleek, and open sound works hand-in-hand with the arrangements. Hall and Oates' knack for stylish tones, instrumental placement, and edgy accents has never been clearer-literally or figuratively. This LP is nothing short of a game-changer.
By the dawn of the 1980s, Hall and Oates had already released more than a half-dozen albums and attached themselves to a folk-pop model they gradually took in blue-eyed soul directions. Hints of a pop/new wave/R&B amalgamation initially appear on 1979's X-Static, but only fully come into play with confidence, conviction, and commercial flair on Voices. Arriving upon a near-flawless fusion of dance grooves, soft rock rhythms, smooth vocals, romantic sentiments, catchy beats, and spotless hooks, the collaborators simultaneously crossed over into multiple markets and eradicated stylistic boundaries.
Rightly recognized for its four hit singles-the irresistible "Kiss on My List," building "You Make My Dreams," cover of the Righteous Brothers' "You've Lost That Lovin' Feeling," and original rendition of the poignant "Every Time You Go Away," which Paul Young took to the top of the charts years later-Voices towers as both an 80s masterpiece and all-time pop classic.
Independent of the ubiquitous fare, the record holds up courtesy of the deep-album cuts. There isn't a weak note or false move to be found. Hall and Oates paint "United State" with uptempo assertiveness; "Big Kids" passes as first-rate new-wave rock; "Diddy Doo Wop (I Hear the Voices)" pays loving tribute to the duo's doo-wop influences; "Gotta Lotta Nerve (Perfect Perfect)" oozes emotional rawness. Their stage set, Hall and Oates would further advance their craft on Private Eyes and H20, also available from Mobile Fidelity.

Get The Knack
One of the Most Instantly Successful and Highest-Selling Debut Albums in History: The Knack's Attitudinal Get the Knack Loaded With Power Pop, Catchy Hooks, Keen Melodies, and My Sharona
Mastered from the Original Master Tapes, Pressed at RTI, and Strictly Limited to 3000 Numbered Copies: Mobile Fidelity 180g LP of Get the Knack Teems with Abundant Energy
Most everyone knows The Knack's Get the Knack because of the ubiquitous smash My Sharona, a contagious hit that still plays countless times everyday on radio stations nationwide. But the appeal and significance of the Los Angeles quartet's 1979 debut extend far beyond the career-making single. Loaded with tight power pop, hummable hooks, blunt lyrics, and precision playing, the controversy-igniting Get the Knack resonates with an ageless freshness that's influenced everyone from Kurt Cobain to modern indie artists such as the Mountain Goats.
Mastered from the original master tapes, pressed at RTI, and strictly limited to 3000 numbered copies, Mobile Fidelity's 180g LP of Get the Knack brings the record's urgent harmonies, keen melodies, bell-clear tones, and snapping percussion out of the shadows and into the limelight. Graced with large-scale frequency extension and ample separation, the Knack's feisty music now teems with added energy, body, and immediacy. Absent the dynamic compression that squelched previous reissues, this numbered limited-edition audiophile analog version blossoms with detail, openness, and brashness. A guilty pleasure to some and new-wave classic to many others, Get the Knack is so attitudinal it spawned one of the industry's most famous backlashes.
Released by Capitol Records after the Knack courted a dozen other offers, the 12-track set remains one of the most instantaneously successful debuts ever made. Aided by tongue-in-cheek marketing, a sly cover-art reference to the Beatles' Meet the Beatles, and Mack Truck-sized refrains that stick in your head for hours, Get the Knack went gold in days and, to date, has sold more than five million copies. The meteoric rise didn't sit well with detractors committed to ripping apart the band for its perceived arrogance (members refused to sit for interviews) and alleged misogynist stance. Needless to say, the boycotting campaigns fell on deaf ears.
Holding down the top of the singles chart for six weeks, and the eventual number-one single on the year-end 1979 chart, My Sharona alone cemented the Knack's position in history. Written by lead singer and guitarist Doug Fieger about his lust for the then-underage 17-year-old Sharona Alperin, who ultimately became his fiancÉe, the anthem's suggestive themes carry throughout the record. Straightforward in its sleaziness and sexuality, Get the Knack pulls no punches about teenage frustrations, boy-girl one-upsmanship, sticky sweet romance, and unrequited passions for the opposite sex.
Teasing, mischievous tracks such as (She's So) Selfish connect with Bo Diddley-inspired riffs and crude, hormonally charged lines that split the difference between manipulation, nastiness, and arousal. The Top 15 hit Good Girls Don't similarly confronts the pent-up carnal desires and libidinous emotions shared by youth of all generations, while That's What the Little Girls Do functions as a sly response. Your Number or Your Name dabbles in related subject matter, with sensitivity and hopefulness added for good measure. It's a perfect mix of agony and ecstasy, fear and confidence.
Shot-through with yearning, every song bursts forth with undeniable catchiness, firecracker release, and sassy style - an approach Rolling Stone rightly says finds the band [winding] itself tighter than a hot pair of disco jeans, then [doing] its best to hold to that energy until its time to explode.

Kiss (Awaiting Repress)Kiss' 1974 self-titled debut is one of hard rock's all-time classic studio recordings. Kiss is chock full of their best and most renowned compositions, containing elements of Rolling Stones/New York Dolls party-hearty rock & roll, Beatles tunefulness, and Sabbath/Zep heavy metal, and wisely recorded primal and raw by producers Richie Wise and Kenny Kerner (of Gladys Knight fame). Main songwriters Stanley and Simmons each had a knack for coming up with killer melodies and riffs, as evidenced by Nothin' to Lose and Deuce (by Simmons), Firehouse and Black Diamond (by Stanley), as well as Strutter and 100,000 Years (collaborations by the two). Also included is the Ace Frehley alcohol anthem Cold Gin, Let Me Know (a song that Stanley played for Simmons upon their very first meeting, then titled Sunday Driver), and one of Kiss' few instrumentals: the groovy Love Theme from Kiss (penned by the entire band). The only weak track is a tacky cover of the 1959 Bobby Rydell hit Kissin' Time, which was added to subsequent pressings of the album to tie in with a Kissing Contest promotion the band was involved in at the time. Along with 1976's Destroyer, Kiss' self-titled debut is their finest studio album, and has only improved over the years.

Led by singer-songwriter Nate Lacey, the indie-folk outfit has made a name for itself by melodically weaving introspective lyrics over ambient landscapes. Amen & GoodbyeAmen & Goodbye is the fourth studio album from the Brooklyn-based band, Yeasayer.
To visually interpret the album, Yeasayer collaborated with renowned sculptor David Altmejd (whose artwork is a major influence on the band) to create the gatefold artwork. The teasers released prior to the album announcement contained some of the sculptures Altmejd created while listening to the bands new album. This was a dream come true for the band and the full artwork is utterly spectacular.
Amen & Goodbye is the follow up to 2012's Fragrant World. Moving away from a digital-heavy approach, Yeasayer recorded Amen & Goodbye to tape at Outlier Inn Studio in upstate New York, then brought on board Joey Waronker (drummer - Atoms For Peace / Beck) to deconstruct everything to make the final document.
Yeasayer offered a peek into the world of Amen & Goodbye with 'I Am Chemistry', the first track to be heard from their highly anticipated forthcoming album. Featuring guest vocals from the legendary folk singer Suzzy Roche of The Roches, 'I Am Chemistry' is a linear psychedelic journey proving Yeasayer still has the knack for writing very odd pop songs.

Court and Spark (Awaiting Repress)Ranked 111/500 on Rolling Stone Magazine's 500 Greatest Albums of All Time.
Court And Spark completed Joni Mitchell's transition from folk-singer to sophisticated rock auteur. In addition to her meticulously crafted melodies and evocative, image-rich lyrics, the songs here are breezy and immediately appealing. This is in part due to Tom Scott's L.A. Express, a sinuous jazz-based combo, but also to Mitchell's knack for pop hooks. The album's accessibility made it Mitchell's most commercially successful, yet the personal intensity and insight of her songwriting never wavers. How Sad, How LovelyFirst Time On Vinyl!
"Everything we value in singer-songwriters today - personal perspective, insight,
originality, empathy, intelligence, wry humor - was abundant in her music."
- NPR MUSIC
Elizabeth Eaton Converse grew up in Laconia, New Hampshire in 1924. Described
as a polymath, she attended Mt. Holyoke College, but by 1944 she
decided to leave college and, in 1949, she made her way to New York City.
Over the course of the next decade, in addition to acquiring her new moniker,
"Connie" wrote and recorded songs that captured the hearts of those
close to her. Some were recorded by the artist in her Greenwich Village
apartment, others by friends enamored of the music. These included animator
Gene Deitch and his colleague Bill Bernal, who helped coordinate an appearance
on the CBS Morning Show with Walter Cronkite.
Despite these efforts, Connie's music never reached an audience wider than,
as she once put it, "dozens of people all over the world." In 1961 Connie
tired of New York and left for Ann Arbor. She became increasingly despondent
in the 1970's, and, finally, in 1974, Connie wrote a series of goodbye
notes to friends and family, packed up her Volkswagen and disappeared.
She has not been seen or heard from since.
At first listen, Connie's music seems to keep close company with the female
folk artists who were her contemporaries. The knack for plaintive storytelling
shares much with Peggy Seeger and Susan Reed, but Connie's music
stands out from that of the American folk revival of the 1950's. Her fluid and
disarmingly intelligent poetry is often filled with the kind of contradictions that
reflects an urban perspective. She is at once a maverick and a romantic,
intellectual and spiritual, a staunch independent and a tender, pining lover.

Dracula is steeped in the strange pop brew that bore Apple's Acre, with the band's unmistakable elastic melodies, heady pop hooks and unconventional knack for catchy songwriting that gets under your skin. But where Apple's Acre was an insular album, recorded primarily in an attic in Idaho using just an internal Macbook microphone and primitive recording software, Dracula is bursting. O T H E RFolk-pop act Any Kind is comprised of a handful of regulars from the local music scene: three members from This is Me Smiling and one from Inspector Owl, guys who move between bands often enough that it's like Chicago's music scene is their own personal swinger party.
It's pretty clear from the first listen of their self-titled debut album that these kids have been playing together for a long time. They have a comfortable chemistry, more lo-fi, relaxed, and naturally flowing than what you'll hear from This is Me Smiling. The album's opening track, "Only Gonna Let You Down" is a good example, with sparse and scratchy guitar play, light drumming, and lyrics that follow the train of thought of a wary lover. The act also has a knack for infectious beats, like in "Never Seen Anyone Out There Like You" and "One More."

In Light is the debut album from the Lafayette, Louisiana-based five-piece Givers. Engineer Ben Allen (Cee-Lo, Animal Collective, M.I.A., Matt & Kim) helped to provide sounds here that expand upon the bands greatest assets, their innate knack for the catchiest of melodies, and the ever-evolving rhythms and sense of adventure that gave them their experimental edge.
Opener and first single Up Up Up is nothing short of anthemic, a rousing calling card for the bands elated sound. Ripe is a kaleidoscope of sultry Afro-pop, while Meantime showcases the bands instrumental and thematic investment in fluidity, capping off with a no-holds-barred group sing-along. Words fuses fist-pumping, heavy percussion with staccato vocal chants, and In My Eyes is lifted into the night sky by fluttering harmonies, steel drum chimes, swirling guitar solos and cricket hums. Atlantic laces Lamsons textured drawl with Caribbean accents, ukulele plucks and keyboard sparkles.

The Golden Hits Of The Everly BrothersMastered from the Original Warner Bros. Tapes by Joe Reagoso
Don and Phil Everly are most certainly two of the most important figures in popular music history. Whether rock, pop, adult contemporary or country music, The Everly Brothers have consistently rose to the occasion with their successful harmonies, musicianship, and of course the knack to pick songs and write their own material which has made them legends in their own time.
Their legendary status has put them on world stages for over five decades and they have been honored and adored by both the fans and huge rock music icons like The Beatles, The Beach Boys, and Simon and Garfunkel. When the Everly Brothers joined the Warner Bros. label in the late '50s, their marquee value was just beginning to skyrocket. A long term lucrative deal, unprecedented at the time, afforded the boys the real opportunity to churn out hit after hit in record time.
While making a successful string of albums and hit singles, their greatest hits LP, simply titled The Golden Hits Of The Everly Brothers, showcased their star power in 1962. Filled with a dozen of their biggest hits like Cathys Clown, Thats Old Fashioned, Crying In The Rain, Ebony Eyes and their classic interpretation of Little Richards Lucille, the album itself was another home run for the duo. It rode the charts for months during its initial release and has been a consistent seller in various formats since the original album was discontinued decades ago!
Friday Music kicks off The Everly Brothers 180 Gram Audiophile Series with their greatest hits album The Golden Hits Of The Everly Brothers. This first time ever high grade audiophile vinyl release is mastered from the original Warner Bros. tapes by Joe Reagoso at Friday Music Studios and at Capitol Records with Ron McMaster. It also includes the brilliant album cover photography of Michael Levin and the all of the great songs you remember including other major Top 40 smashes like Dont Blame Me, Walk Right Back and the masterful ballad So Sad.

Everybody Wants Some!! SoundtrackThe official soundtrack curated by the film's director Richard Linklater, featuring classic songs from Van Halen, The Cars, The Knack, and many more.
Quote from Linklater: The Everybody Wants Some soundtrack tries to capture the amazing diversity of what was on the table musically at that time. So many artists were at the top of their game, and it seemed like a lot of popular genres were viable. Metal and R&B were as big as ever, disco was still hanging in there (although it would be 'dead' within a year or so), and, thanks to the movie Urban Cowboy, country was suddenly cool in places it hadn't been before. Even more exciting was the immediacy of punk and new wave, and the first examples of this thing you'd eventually know as hip-hop. Over the years some of this has been parodied and made to look ridiculous, but this movie is asking you to experience it as if for the first time - from those opening drum beats of 'My Sharona' to the utter newness of 'Rapper's Delight.'LP 1

In GlendaleFor the last decade, Tim Heidecker (along with his comedy partner Eric Wareheim) has proven to be one of our cult-comedy greats with his Adult Swim series Tim & Eric's Awesome Show, Great Job! and Tim & Eric's Bedtime Stories. He's starred in indie films and played sold out stand-up sets around the world.
But who is Tim Heidecker? Is he a real man with all the regular feels? Well, yes, of course he is. He resides on a hill in Glendale, CA, up to his armpits in diapers, bills, his mortgage, in the workaday life of a writer. It's this pedestrian side of his life from which Heidecker pulls the fodder for the aptly titled In Glendale, his first earnest collection of songwriting under his full name.
In Glendale shows Heidecker shifting deftly from the mundane to the idiosyncratic; from the sentimental to the caustic; from the earnest to the humorous. His knack for crafting catchy tunes amid curious subject matter pops up in spades across In Glendale. Ghost In My Bed is a lovely little number about cutting off someone's head, sticking it in a plastic bag and burying it beneath the Hollywood sign.

All My Favorite Singers Are Willie NelsonAstral Swan's All My Favorite Singers Are Willie Nelson is a collection of stark psychedelic folk from the unfiltered neuroses of Calgary's Matthew Swann. Songs steeped in universal anguish, marveling at the world's knack for enterprise and cannibalism, come across instead as subtle, reassuring lullabies. These are quiet, relatable anthems for the outsider set, balancing gentle melodies on Swann's self-obsession with moral fallibility. On first single "Beginning Of The End", Swann delves into the album's various drug states in his sweetly apprehensive tone, a lowly guitar dancing loosely with intoxicated children, asking: "Who told the kids in the yard that they're mostly dust? Now they just stay drunk. Keep getting more fucked up".
Equally inspired by serene 60's folk, 80's no-wave alienation, and the insouciance of 90's grunge, Astral Swans' music is spacious yet constrained, hauntingly personal and oddly sincere. The skeletal "Let Their Faces All Blur Out" races softly with the punk rock abandon of early Sonic Youth and Eric's Trip; "What Calms You Down, Freaks Me Out" bears the ominous pleasance of Syd Barrett, Arthur Russell, Nick Drake, and fellow Calgarian Chad VanGaalen. More structured than Swann's Extra Happy Ghost!!! project (produced by VanGaalen), this album's experimental spirit denies the haphazard "singer-songwriter" label that some might attach to Astral Swans.
Set for release on Dan Mangan's Madic Records, these twelve songs lavish in Swann's startlingly sardonic reflections, in his own words, "confronting our strange ways of experiencing personhood, in the moral gorge between ideals and inadequacies". Tracked live in Swann's living room, and later embellished in an old Calgary warehouse with local experimental/improv mainstay Brad Hawkins (Ghostkeeper), All My Favorite Singers Are Willie Nelson is flawed if not for its air of accidental perfection, normalizing existential struggle with rhythm and harmony, a natural marriage of the sweet to the acrid.1. Brand New BrandAll-star power pop rock act The Crunch release their sensational second album. After winning critical acclaim for the compelling mix of pop hooks and punk grit on debut 'Busy Making Noise', vocalist Sulo Karlsson (Diamond Dogs), guitarist Mick Geggus (Cockney Rejects), bassist Dave Tregunna (Sham 69 ) and drummer Terry Chimes (The Clash) wasted no time recording the follow-up. The new record retains and builds upon many of the hallmarks established on 'Busy Making Noise'; most notably an enviable knack for huge, power-pop hooks, and massive, memorable blasts of melody. 'Brand New Brand' also brings another crop of evocative slowburners. One standout is the immense 'Save The Glow', which swells from an understated, semi-acoustic opening, into a swaying, lighters-aloft anthem.1. Lonely Beat Of The Heart

i will be my own hell because there is a devil inside my bodyTeen suicide's first & only proper album, 'i will be my own hell because there is a devil inside my body', has been a sought after release for many collectors after it's ultra-limited vinyl release in 2012. Now, Run For Cover Records will be reissuing my own hell, with remastered audio, expanded artwork and 8 never-before-issued bonus tracks. Across the album's 10 songs, the band displays a knack for different sounds and styles. Intimate, keyboard driven tracks like 'cop graveyard' and 'grim reaper' sit beside more energetic full-band outings like 'dead bird skeleton and 'give me back to the sky', the latter even adding an evocative viola, piano and choral arrangement to it's chaotic center.
It's to the band's credit that their more outrÉ moments feel necessary, not distracting. What becomes clear upon listening to 'my own hell' is that beneath the dreamy haze & noisy apathy of teen suicide's recordings exist ernest, extremely well-written pop songs that reflect and express the uncertainty and desperation of reality.1. The Hurdy Gurdy ManWith 1968's The Hurdy Gurdy Man, Donovan delivered one of his most full-realized works, with a psychedelic/progressive edge as well as an exotic Eastern flavor that reflects the influence of his then-recent trip with the Beatles to India to study with Maharishi Mahesh Yogi-an experience that helped to inspire Donovan to renounce drug use and encourage his fans to try meditation instead of chemical consumption. While the title track introduced a heavier-sounding Donovan to AM radio listeners and became one of his biggest hit singles, the smash "Jennifer Juniper" maintains his gentle, romantic side. The album's playful experimental spirit is reflected in the innovative use of drones on such tracks as "Peregrine" and "Tangier," and in the music-hall diversion of "As I Recall It," while "A Sunny Day," "The River Song" and "The Entertaining of a Shy Girl" showcase Donovan's knack for idyllic, pastoral songcraft. Sundazed's vinyl edition of The Hurdy Gurdy Man features the album's rare, much sought-after original mono mix, doing justice to the sonic presence and creative imagination of this vintage gem.1. BlessedWilliams' 2011 Studio Set on 2LP Includes Entire Album on CD Plus a Bonus CD of the Kitchen Tapes Demos
Americana Legend's 12th Record Produced by Don Was
Features Guest Appearances by Elvis Costello and Matthew Sweet
Following a two-year break between albums, and the blossoming of a relationship that turned into marriage, one of the great contemporary songwriters and music makers returns with her twelfth studio set. And being that the artist we're talking about is Lucinda Williams, the record is a doozy.
Diverse and captivating, Blessed opens with the gritty kiss-off Buttercup then moves seamlessly into the sultry blues of Born To Be Loved. Williams delves into a heavier subject as she questions the motives for a suicide on the hard-driving Seeing Black, which features blistering guitar from Elvis Costello. The thoughtful title track slowly builds to a melodic climax as it offers an eye-opening look at whats right in front of us, but too often unnoticed. The singer/guitarist's knack for insights and emotive songs run throughout the 12-song set.
Poignant and powerful, Soldiers Song simultaneously tells a tragic story of the soldier overseas and his wife and child back home. On the gorgeous Kiss Like Your Kiss, Williams lays down one of the most beautiful and fragile vocals she has ever recorded. The original version of the song appeared on the True Blood: Music From The HBO Original Series - Volume 2, and was recently nominated for a Grammy Award.
Its nothing new to see Williams tug at the heartstrings and stimulate the mind on her songs, but there is a vibe throughout Blessed that is unique to this album: the sound of wisdom, wherewithal, and experience Williams has gained through her more than 30 years as an uncompromising artist. Combine that pedigree with Grammy Award-winning producer Don Was, and the results are nothing but special. Was co-produced Blessed with Eric Liljestrand and Tom Overby, who co-produced Williams' highly-praised 2008 effort Little Honey.
Lost Highway's 2LP pressing of Blessed also includes the entire album on CD as well as a revealing bonus disc, titled The Kitchen Tapes, which presents the record's songs in demo form as Williams recorded them, often at her kitchen table, as she's prone to do. Complete packaging on new studio records doesn't come any better!LP 1
