    The Lumineers

In 2011, an eponymous, self-recorded EP led to touring, and before long The Lumineers started attracting devout fans. They're drawn by songs like Ho Hey and Stubborn Love, Americana-inflected barn burners in the vein of the Avett Brothers and Mumford & Sons. The roots revival of the last few yeas has primed listeners for a new generation of rustic, heart-on-the-sleeve music. The Lumineers walk that line with an unerring gift for timeless melodies and soul-stirring lyrics.

    Cleopatra

Two-time Grammy nominated band The Lumineers have returned with the follow-up to their platinum-selling debut album. Following many years honing their craft, the Denver-based trio found success on the strength of their songwriting, melodies, and timeless approach, which lead to sold out arenas, massive festival slots, the cover of Billboard Magazine and appearances on Saturday Night Live, Ellen, The Tonight Show, The Late Show, Jimmy Kimmel Live, Austin City Limits and Conan.

The Lumineers' new album Cleopatra is the natural continuation of the sound audiences all over the world fell in love with; it's the sound of a band who hasn't let success change who they are, a band that still leaps into the crowd for a sing-along, a band making music to bring people together.

    Love Scenes

Like a mink draped over mahogany, Diana Krall's luxuriously supple alto adorns the vintage songs of romance and longing found on Love Scenes with a palpable aura of glamour and late-night cool. Her ostensibly effortless command of phrasing and intonation, whether the mood is seduction or a sweet sassiness, further fortifies the opinion that the Canadian vocalist-pianist possesses one of the great female jazz voices to surface in the late 1990s.

Augmented by spare but skillful instrumentation from bassist Christian McBride and guitarist Russell Malone, Krall sustains a largely quiet (though hardly sleepy) ambience throughout the album's 12 selections, from Irving Berlin's How Deep Is the Ocean (How High Is the Sky), which she also uses as a showcase for her touch at the keyboard, to Gershwin's They Can't Take That Away from Me. Her swing is artfully subdued (All or Nothing at All), and her wry, expressive approach to Peel Me a Grape is pure charm. Yet Krall shines most luminously on languid gems such as I Don't Stand a Ghost of a Chance with You and Garden in the Rain. Anyone in search of an album ideal for watching city lights at 2 a.m. should keep Love Scenes in mind. --Terry Wood

Recorded over 15 months in the band's east London
    studio-laboratory-bunker with co-producer Craig Silvey
    (Yeah Yeah Yeahs,Arcade Fire,The National),Luminous is
the follow-up to the band's 2007 debut Strange House,
the Mercury-nominated Primary Colours (2009), and
    the critically-acclaimed Skying (2011).

Tasking themselves with moving onwards, The Horrors
determined to make an album that was brighter, more
    positive, more electronic.

Luminous by name, luminous by nature: this is an album
radiating light and energy. These songs are The Horrors
writing at their instinctive, intuitive and accessible best.
Further input came from producer Paul Epworth (Adele,
Paul McCartney, Foster The People) on the track "Falling

Back In Print On Blue Vinyl

The Beachwood Sparks are space cowboys -- although their self-titled debut most closely recalls the sound of vintage Laurel Canyon country-rock, its shimmering twang-pop melodies and gorgeous harmonies bask in a kind of interstellar psychedelia which lends the album an otherworldly glow. The hypnotically dreamlike instrumental passages which wind their way through luminous country-pop moments like Sister Rose, Something I Don't Recognize, and Old Sea Miner completely transform the album's chemical makeup. Rooted in the earth but reaching for the stars, the group realizes Gram Parsons' Cosmic American music aesthetic in its truest sense.

    Little River Band

The Little River Band are considered to be among Australia's most significant bands, having sold over 30 million records. The soft rock harmony group released their self titled debut in 1975 and modelled after American bands such as The Eagles and Doobie Brothers.

Guitarist Graham Goble and singer Glenn Shorrock dominated the songwriting on this astonishingly strong debut that brings both the crunchy electric guitars, luminous acoustic guitar, and smooth harmonizing of It's A Long Way There as well as the hauntingly beautiful movie-within-a-song The Man in Black.

    Garden Window

Carrying the weight of the luminance and spacy textures from their 2009 EP, The Death of Day, Atlanta, Ga foursome O'Brother have grown into sounds of scorching heaviness and punctuated melodic interruptions that act as puzzles in-between the groaning feedback of Garden Window, the band's debut full length. With Garden Window displaying more density, the songs themselves bask in longer time frames and dynamic intensity the whole way out. Close friends Andy Hull and Robert McDowell of Manchester Orchestra stepped in as producers for Garden Window.

    I Am The Cosmos

    Clear Colored Vinyl

I Am the Cosmos is an enduring testament to the brilliance of Chris Bell; lyrically poignant and melodically stunning, this lone solo album is proof positive of his underappreciated pop mastery. While cuts like Get Away, I Got Kinda Lost, and Fight at the Table recall the glowing, energetic power pop of Bell's earlier work, the majority of the songs on I Am the Cosmos are more reflective and deeply personal; the title track is a harrowingly schizophrenic tale of romantic despair, while other cuts like the lurching Better Save Yourself and the lovely Look Up are infused with a spiritual power largely missing from his Big Star material.

The album's highlight, You and Your Sister -- which features backing vocals from none other than Bell's Big Star mate Alex Chilton -- is simply one of the great unknown love songs in the pop canon, a luminous and fragile ballad almost otherworldly in its beauty.

    Annabel Dream Reader

Formed in Brighton in 2011, The Wytches comprises Kristian Bell (vocals, guitar), Dan Rumsey (bass, vocals) and Gianni Honey (drums). Led by Bell's luminous lyricism, feral delivery and overdriven, surf-like guitar bends, the trio create a sound that is at once raucous and unruly, and yet decorated with semi-automatic poetry and authentic emotional clout.

Recorded at Liam Watson's 8-track analogue ToeRag Studios in Hackney, Annabel Dream Reader was tracked in two days under the supervision of producer Bill Ryder-Jones (ex-The Coral). Comprising thirteen songs, Annabel Dream Reader sees the three-piece accomplish a dark and heady sound that embraces the black arts and the more extreme limits of rock, but which is never prescriptively macabre. Far from it, the band displays a broadness of influences - all at once the songs reference surf, grunge, metalcore, spy movie scores.

    Until The Colour Runs

Following the success of their critically acclaimed debut
in 2011, Lanterns On The Lake return with a new album,
the sublime Until The Colours Run, which will be released
    October 10th on Bella Union.

The source of the music remains the same, an exquisitely
crafted blend of symphonic rock, folk and electronics but much has changed in the interim. The album was
recorded during a time of financial and personal adversity, and as a result, Until The Colours Run is more soulful
and dynamic than its predecessor. In sound, it's both
harder ('Elodie', the title track) and more luminous
('Green And Gold', 'Picture Show'), and a more emotionally and politically charged experience, as singer/lyricist
Hazel Wilde paints unflinching portraits of what she sees.
It's a haunting, often devastating combination.

"Not only have they made a better record than their
debut, they've made one of the best records of the
young decade." - DROWNED IN SOUND

    Waiting To Exhale Soundtrack

Masterfully Produced And All But One Track Written By Kenneth "Babyface" Edmonds

Featured R&B Divas Old School (Aretha Franklin, Patti Labelle, Chaka Khan) And New School (Whitney Houston, Brandy, Mary J. Blige)

Released In Purple Vinyl (Whitney Houston's Favorite Color)

Waiting to Exhale was a phenomenon on so many levels. First, it was a literary phenomenon, as the 1992 novel launched author Terry McMillan to superstardom. Then, when the feature film based on the book was released in 1995, it became a broader cultural phenomenon-a mainstream Hollywood film focusing on the lives of four African-American women was a genuinely revolutionary act at the time. And, finally, it was a musical phenomenon, as its soundtrack seamlessly blended female R&B divas new school (Whitney Houston, Brandy, Mary J. Blige, etc.) and old school (Aretha Franklin, Patti LaBelle, Chaka Khan) in a masterful suite of songs composed and produced by Kenneth "Babyface" Edmonds.

Critical and commercial reaction to the soundtrack was over the top; The New York Times deemed the album one of the Top Ten releases of the year, and the record topped the Billboard Pop and R&B charts for five and ten weeks, respectively, spawning the #1 hit singles "Exhale (Shoop Shoop)," "Not Gon' Cry," and "Let It Flow." Yet, because the album came out in 1995 at the height of the CD era, Waiting to Exhale never came out on LP in the U.S., and was released in Europe as a low-budget 2-LP set with both records stuffed inside a single album jacket pocket.

Now, Real Gone Music is releasing this landmark '90s R&B album on vinyl in America for the first time in a limited edition (of 1000) gatefold double-LP package sporting a luminous photo of the movie's four principal actors (Whitney Houston, Angela Bassett, Lela Rochon, and Loretta Devine) on the inside spread and pristine vinyl pressed in purple (Whitney's favorite color).

Gently pulsating and seductive, Waiting to Exhale is Babyface's masterpiece, one of the great make-out records of all time; now you can get that slow jam groove in the grooves!

    Fuchsia Swing Song

During the Blue Note 75th anniversary celebration the label released 100 essential Blue Note LPs and asked New York Times readers what titles they'd like to see make the list. This album is one of five new reissues that were hand-selected by Blue Note President, Don Was, based on New York Times reader recommendations.

Recorded in 1964 immediately after leaving the Miles Davis Quintet, Sam Rivers' Fuchsia Swing Song is one of the more auspicious debuts the label released in the mid-'60s. Rivers was a seasoned session player (his excellent work on Larry Young's Into Somethin' is a case in point) and a former member of Herb Pomeroy's Big Band before he went out with Davis. By the time of his debut, Rivers had been deep under the influence of Coltrane and Coleman, but wasn't willing to give up the blues just yet. Hence the sound on Fuchsia Swing Song is one of an artist who is at once very self-assured, and in transition.

Using a rhythm section that included Tony Williams (whose Life Time he had guested on), pianist Jaki Byard, and bassist Ron Carter, Rivers took the hard bop and blues of his roots and poured them through the avant-garde colander. Today, players like Joshua Redman, Branford Marsalis, and James Carter do it all the time, but in 1964 it was unheard of. You either played hard bop or free; Davis' entire modal thing hadn't even completely blasted off yet. The title and opening track is a case in point.

Rivers opens with an angular figure that is quickly translated by the band into sweeping, bopping blues. Rivers legato is lightning quick and his phrasing touches upon Coleman Hawkins, Sonny Rollins, Coleman, and Coltrane, but his embouchure is all his. He strikes the balance and then takes off on both sides of the aisle. Byard's comping is actually far more than that, building in rhythmic figures in striated minors just behind the tenor. Downstairs Blues Upstairs sounds, initially anyway, like it might have come out of the Davis book so deep is its blue root. But courtesy of Byard and Williams, Rivers goes to the left after only four choruses, moving onto the ledge a bit at a time, running knotty arpeggios through the center of the melody and increasingly bending his notes into succeeding intervals while shifting keys and times signatures

He never goes completely over the edge as he would on his later Blue Note dates. The most difficult cut on the date is Luminous Monolith, with its swing-like figure introducing the melody. Eight bars in, the syncopation of the rhythm sections begins a stutter stem around the time and then the harmony with Byard building dense chords for Rivers to jump off of. On the Connoisseur Series CD (shame on Blue Note once again for making some of its best outside records limited editions; titles like this should be as readily available as Horace Silver's Song for My Father, but the label had been playing it ever so safe for a while and making fans buy the limited number of titles over and again) there are alternate takes of Luminous Monolith and three more of Downstairs Blues Upstairs, making it a very worthwhile look at the entire session.

This is a highly recommended date. Rivers never played quite like this again.

Old World Underground, Where Are You Now?

They say there's no time like the present; what they really mean is there's no such thing as the present. Five seconds into the future will be five seconds in the past once you finish reading this sentence. Translated into rock 'n' roll, terms, it means you're either ahead of your time or past your prime. And we're cool with that. We like categories and demographics and timelines because they allow us not to think; everything can be explained with the check of a box or a dot on a graph. But Metric don't let you off that easy. Their measures are decidedly cubist: eternal, multilayered portraits of instantaneous moments, the luminous blur of street life rendered as a freeze-tableaux, daily rituals portrayed in a fantastical light. This is music born out of sly, considered observation instead of gratuitous introspection - which makes it refreshingly anomalous in an era when so much popular music fudges the line between self-absorption and self-parody. Their debut album, OLD WORLD UNDERGROUND, WHERE ARE YOU NOW? launched Metric's career and helped to usher in a wave (or New Wave) of Canadian indie bands such as Broken Social Scene and Arcade Fire. They have since gone on to sell over a million singles and 500,000 albums worldwide. Finally available on vinyl, the album sounds as urgent and timeless today as it did in 2003 and like all of Metric's music to date, OLD WORLD UNDERGROUND, WHERE ARE YOU NOW? isn't so much a summation of influences as experiences. The old world underground they so romanticize; they're not sure if it ever truly existed.

    Vega Intl. Night School

While making Neon Indian's third album, Alan Palomo turned a crisis into an opportunity: When his laptop -- which contained demos of his new songs -- was stolen at the end of the Era Extraña tour, he started anew by drawing inspiration from his past. Vega Intl. Night School takes its name and sound from his previous electronic project VEGA and his pet name for his after-dark adventures, conveying the dazzling, fleeting allure of a night out. Era Extraña's crisper beats and textures hinted that Palomo might be headed in a more danceable direction, but on his third album, he finds ways to subvert expectations while remaining true to Neon Indian's essence.

He applies his flair for mood-crafting to a palette of electro, funk, disco, new wave, and reggae, transforming his synth-heavy sound into a love letter to the fabulous keyboard tones of the '70s and '80s: Note the Baroque embellishments to Slumlord's filter-disco and the squiggles that make Street Level sound even more like forgotten Paisley Park brilliance. Prince and Daft Punk are two of the album's biggest influences, not just in sound but in spirit. The way these tracks flow into each other recalls the uninhibited, possibly inebriated way Homework's first few cuts blended into an atmospheric portrait of nightlife, a concept Palomo runs with on Vega Intl. Night School. Sounding like a field recording from an '80s nightclub, Smut! captures the disorienting, intoxicating feel of entering a party that's already in full swing; Techno Clique expresses the anonymity and intimacy of dancing with a stranger, and the luminous synths that close The Glitzy Hive might as well be sunrise peeking through the club's doors. Vega Intl. Night School's more structured songs are so good that it's easy to wish there were more of them

    Slowmotionary

Ethan Gruska's solo debut, the luminous Slowmotionary, embraces a range of sounds and styles, with influences from jazz and folk to ambient and alternative, Slowmotionary integrates everything into a whole that is original, idiosyncratic and embraces its own imperfections. I really tried to let that humanity in and to not only leave these quirky blemishes in, but to highlight them, says Gruska. I didn't want perfect. I wanted true. I wanted honest. He made room for a little serendipity in his creative process, sensing that too calculated an approach would diminish the impact of the music. That spontaneity provided a wonderful counterpoint to his thoughtful and revealing lyrics. Showcasing Gruska's hushed vocals and subtle arrangements, these songs resonate with the intimacy of an internal monologue, as though we're sharing in his darkest worries.

The goal was to have it be like a sound collage that I had made. It was really exploratory, with a lot of sampling and reversing-techniques I had tried in the past but had never gotten to fully explore. The results are beautifully minimalist: songs as whispered confidences, with what Gruska calls an arctic sound, windswept and cold, befitting lyrics that depict moments frozen in time. I didn't want to hide behind anything. That's why it's produced and arranged the way it is. It's very barren at certain moments. These songs slow down time for me, which is why I called it Slowmotionary. I needed to put myself out there musically and lyrically.

And that meant not making it perfect. It meant making these songs sound like the results from something other than a studio. It meant conveying the sense of music that is being written at the same moment you hear it. A lot of the record is mysterious, even to me. It's not something you always tap your foot to. You're listening to my thought process.

    Moon

Born from love, musical empathy, a baby grand piano discovered on Gumtree and an expired visa, Snowbird duo Stephanie Dosen and Simon Raymonde have crafted an album of exquisite melody and mood that radiates the uncanny mystery of the object it's named after: moon.

Released on Bella Union, the label that Raymonde has run and curated since his former band Cocteau Twins went their individual ways in 1997, moon comprises 11 songs composed between two continents; Raymonde was in London while Dosen was in North Carolina after being based in the capital following her 2007 debut A Lily For The Spectre. Snowbird's album was subsequently crafted via the wonder of technology, and yet moon has one unifying and intimate sound and vision, from gently pulsating, pop-centric trails ("I Heard The Owl Call My Name", "Bears On My Trail") and lingering, luminous ballads ("All Wishes Are Ghosts", "Come To The Woods") to the musical equivalent of floating downstream, bathed
in silvery light ("Charming Birds From Trees", "In Lovely").

The eagle-eyed out there will notice the predominance of flora and fauna on moon, starting with the name Snowbird. There's more on "Where Foxes Hide", "We Carry White Mice" and "Heart Of The Woods". But there is one human subject in"Amelia", and others came out to play too, a suitably transatlantic roster of friends: Radiohead drummer Philip Selway and guitarist Ed O'Brien, Midlake guitarist Eric Pulido and drummer McKenzie Smith and two more gifted guitarists in Paul Gregory(Lanterns On The Lake) and Jonathan Wilson.

If the 11 tracks weren't enough there is a 2nd half of the record!. An album of remixes (one for each 11 tracks) by Michigan's electronic music genius by the name of RxGibbs, who expands, annotates and shines a whole new light on the wonder of Snowbird, adding and subtracting beats, creating otherworldly ambient passages, and building the other half of a distinctly beautiful and passionate whole that gives a whole new meaning to the term"moonstruck" The album cover (above) is by Vaughan Oliver, famed graphic designer known for his distinctive work for 4AD, including many album covers for Cocteau Twins.

    The Best Of

Despite great acclaim at the time The Czars remain one of Denver's best-kept secrets. Over the course of their career they couldn't quite turn critical salvos into commercial success. Then, when the band split up in 2004 after their fifth album - the presciently titled Goodbye - nothing was heard from any member for six years. So when John Grant reappeared in 2010 with his landmark solo debut Queen Of Denmark, some thought he was a new artist, without a back-story that stretches as far back as 1994 when the band originally formed.

The Best Of The Czars is made up predominantly from the run of three studio albums that Bella Union released between 2000 and 2004. Before But Longer donates the first four songs, 2002's The Ugly People Vs The Beautiful People the next six, and Goodbye the next five. The final track is an exquisite reading of Tim Buckley's signature standard Song To The Siren taken from 2005's B-sides/covers compilation Sorry I Made You Cry.

Grant is his own fiercest critic, and says of all Czars albums he only stands by Goodbye. It's the only one that came anywhere close to being what I'd hoped for, he reckons. Out of the five albums we made, there's one good solid album of material. Well, John, here it is. But The Best Of The Czars isn't merely good; it's magnificent. At their best, The Czars mastered a luminous and stately country-folk'n'western noir shot through with a classic songwriting twist.

On various tours since his solo debut, Grant has performed three old Czars tracks: Drug (from The Ugly People ), Paint The Moon and Little Pink House (from Goodbye). They're the Czars songs I most connect to in performance, that I'm proudest of, that flowed out of me as complete products, says Grant. As a whole, though, the band remains a conflicted memory for the singer. I had so much fear at the time, I wanted to try and control everything around me, which I feel affected my voice, he admits. Only now do I feel that voice is coming out of its shell, and that I'm comfortable in my own skin. But the music is an important part of my history, so it deserves to be heard.
