The Magic Band'
ADAD-THI-3172xThe Haden Triplets
The Haden TripletsThird Man Records is proud to present the debut album from The Haden Triplets. These are songs steeped in history and sung in a close harmony
that could only be achieved from sharing a lifetime of sisterly togetherness and a near psychic vocal interplay that can only come from being born mere
seconds apart from each other. It's been rendered and produced beautifully by American music legend Ry Cooder.
This is an album expanding on an American musical tradition. It is not pastiche or a tribute, but rather a direct antecedent and extension of the original folk legacy that is being exhibited within these songs.
Here's a little more about it in the Haden's own words.
During our early life, we were surrounded by music on both sides of our family. We visited our dad's family in Missouri, where they taught us old country songs they used to perform on the radio as The Haden Family. Our grandparents on our mother's side used to sing us to sleep with old Yiddish songs. Growing up, we often had music playing in the house, whether it be our mom playing Billie Holiday and Nina Simone records, or our dad playing Keith Jarrett and Ornette Coleman in the living room.
We met Ry when we played with his son Joachim, and Joachim asked him if he'd sit in for our show. Once Ry heard we were singing "Voice From On High" by Bill Monroe, he was in right away. The next day we got a call from Ry suggesting we record an album. We wrote down a collection of songs we all liked, then narrowed it down to the music that became the Haden Triplets album. These songs are rich in history, and by recording them we hope to help keep them alive. - Tanya, Rachel & Petra Haden

YMO USA & Yellow Magic OrchestraImport
This first YMO album was released in 1978 in Japan ('79 in Europe) and set a precedent in the music industry like never before. By releasing this daring album, YMO shook the world with their Synthpop','at the time a revelation as well as a revolution.
YMO created their own sound, far ahead of its time. The band was amongst the first to use a computer music composer, which was a programmed Roland MC-8 Microcomposer developed by Hideki Matsutake (composer, arranger and computer programmer). The trio mainly used electronic equipment on this album. The only acoustic instruments used were a piano and marimba percussion set. This type of production was never heard of before and set about a new movement within the music business.

Magic Windows, Magic NightsThe recording sessions with Guided By Voices producer, Todd Tobias, lasting less than two weeks in the freezing Northeast Ohio cold, showed the band's ability to work at a breakneck pace with pinpoint accuracy and culminated in the fifteen-song monolith release Magic Windows, Magic Night. Blending lo-fi cassette performances, urban NYC field recordings and tape samples with baroque orchestration and Tobias' high-fi analog indie production, Magic Windows, Magic Nights clamors with the noise of a band firing on all cylinders. Five's melodic songwriting often veers from languid to raging, and eclipses the band's 2008 Cassette debut, with tightened Mascis-style guitar melodies and Brian Wilson-style pop concision, while the gunfire drumming of Sustarsic and polytoned sub-frequencies of Shue coalese into a heavy slamming machine. Magic Windows, Magic Nights showcases a band who know the meaning of impermanence and transition, and know how to bridge the gap between oblivion and survival.1. The Stone Statue II

Major MagicAlthough Astoria, Oregon is best known to multiple generations of pop-culture observers as the cinematic setting of the '80s cult classic The Goonies, the rugged riverfront city now has another distinction: as the home of the fab new pop-rock combo known as Holiday Friends. On its consistently uplifting debut album Major Magic, the spirited quintet-singer-guitarist Scott Fagerland and singer-keyboardist Jesse Wityczak, who share most of the band's songwriting duties, plus Scott's brother Jon Fagerland on guitar, keys and vocals, bassist Zack O'Connor and drummer Joey Ficken- deliver ten joyous new tunes that strike a decisive blow for the enduring values of infectious melodic hooks and emotional engaging lyrics.1. The Magic WhipThe new album from Blur, titled The Magic Whip, started life in Hong Kong when the band had an unexpected break in touring in May 2013. It is released by Parlophone Records, 16 years since 13, the band's last record as a four-piece. The recordings for the band's eighth studio album began in Spring 2013 at Avon Studios in Kowloon. Damon Albarn, Graham Coxon, Alex James and Dave Rowntree spent 5 days jamming together and carried on with their live dates while the recordings were put aside and the group finished touring and returned to their respective lives. Dave resumed his day job as a lawyer and Alex returned home to his farm in Oxfordshire from where he writes a regular farming column in The Telegraph and hosts the annual food and music festival The Big Feastival with Jamie Oliver. Graham, who has released eight critically acclaimed solo albums to date, continued to work on his own material and, in 2014, Damon released his Mercury-nominated debut solo album 'Everyday Robots'.Then, in November last year, Graham revisited the tracks and, drafting in Blur's early producer Stephen Street (Leisure, Modern Life is Rubbish, Parklife, The Great Escape, Blur), he worked with the band on the material. Damon then added lyrics and the 12 tracks on The Magic Whip is the result.LP 1

In The Magic HourAoife (pronounced EEE-fah) O'Donovan's debut solo album, Fossils, was released to critical acclaim and ended up on many "Best of 2013" lists from outlets like NPR Music, American Songwriter, New York Magazine and No Depression, among others. Aoife appeared on A Prairie Home Companion, NPR's Weekend Edition, SiriusXM The Coffee House and The Village. President Obama even exposed himself as a fan by including the track "Red and White and Blue and Gold" on his first official Spotify playlist in the summer of 2015. Since it's release, Fossils has sold more than 22,000 copies worldwide, and Aoife is poised to break through with her new album, In The Magic Hour. The songwriting process for In The Magic Hour coincided with the death of Aoife's grandfather, at age 93. She remembers him as a "gentle soul" in the small Irish village of Clonakilty where he lived. The lyrics on In the Magic Hour are infused with a sense of loss and mortality's dark certainty.
But the album is just as much an ode to Aoife's joyful childhood visits to Ireland. Aunts, uncles, grandparents and flocks of cousins would gather at the Clonakilty seaside to swim in the chilly ocean and sing together in the lingering Irish summer twilight. Aoife had not yet performed many of the songs live before arranging and recording them over the course of three sessions in Tucker Martine's (The Decemberists, Neko Case), studio in Portland, OR. "The whole recording process was really Tucker [Martine] and me taking these songs and building them from the ground up," Aoife says. The result is deliberate but not over-done, the freshness of the material intact. While In The Magic Hour rekindles the creative partnership with Grammy-nominated producer Martine, the album also highlights the fruits of Aoife's various career collaborations. Composer Gabriel Kahane, New York's string quartet Brooklyn Rider and musician Chris Thile all lend musical and vocal support, as well as I'm With Her band members Sara Watkins and Sarah Jarosz, plus many more.1. UNIM-BMX-9984xThe Band Perry
The Band PerryDaddy rocked us to sleep with the Rolling Stones; Mama woke us up with Loretta Lynn. So we get it honest. - Kimberly Perry
Inheriting a cross-pollinated love of country and rock & roll from their parents, The Band Perry - siblings Kimberly, Reid, and Neil Perry - say that they bleed the bright red blood of American music. The three have always felt the drive to perform and create music, sweating out the summers in Mobile, Alabama playing in any dusty roadhouse or church that would have them. Kimberly strapped on her first Gibson - and fronted her first high school band - at age 15, employing Reid, then 10, and Neil, only 8, as her roadies. Changing guitar strings and polishing cymbals for their big sister lost its charm after awhile, so the brothers formed their own band, opening for Kimberly's band.
My bass and I've been attached at the hip since I was 10 years old, says Reid. While most of my friends were playing little league, I was sitting in my room learning Rolling Stones' and Beatles' bass lines. It's really all I've ever known. Even as the three worked in different bands, the siblings would spend nights at home playing together: I remember sitting out on our front porch singing old Hank Williams and Bobbie Gentry songs in three-part harmony, hoping to channel the spirits of old country through musical sÉance while fighting off the southern Alabama mosquitoes, says Kimberly. We always knew we'd take the stage together - all we were waiting on was the right moment. That moment came in July of 2005, when - after years of writing together - the siblings decided to join forces as one band. The Band Perry was then invited by the Coca-Cola Bottling Company to open all of the dates on their New Faces Of Country Tour that year.
In the summer of 2008, after spending a few years on the road honing their sound, TBP met longtime Garth Brooks manager Bob Doyle. Partnering with Bob and Josh Pegram, The Band Perry spent the fall and winter of 2008 writing in Nashville and collecting songs for their first country recording session.
The three of us bring different strengths into the writing room, Neil points out. Kimberly carries in a bag of melodies and lyrics, Reid always has some really great musical ideas in his back pocket, and I bring in a sense of humor and some thread that ties it all together.
The new recordings caught the ears of Scott Borchetta and Jimmy Harnen, the CEO and President of Republic Nashville, signing to the new label in the summer of 2009.
When talking about The Band Perry, each member of the trio stresses how much family figures into the mix: Reid, Neil and I share genes and a musical pedigree, Kimberly explains. We read the same classics and cook from the same recipes. With all of our likenesses though, I believe it's our distinctions that stir up the magic when we create. When the three of us sit down to write songs together, we pull from all of our individual perspectives and happenstances to create the most interesting song concoctions.
There's a tightness between the three of us that goes way beyond even best friends, Neil adds. Family vocal harmonies can't be fabricated. And, besides - the three of us know that through the thick and thin of life and the music business, we're watching after each other.
Blood runs thick. The music business can be hard, but the three of us are committed not only to our lives in music, but to living them together, Reid says. I think the security of knowing that about each other allows us to be uninhibited when we create. It's a democracy. It's a safe haven.
We've walked a long way to find your ears, Kimberly Perry finishes with a grin. So play us long and play us loud. The Band Perry is here, and we just have so darn much to say.1. You Lie

From the Original Kama Sutra Mono Masters
Greenwich Village, 1964: While the folk boom is still in progress, other musics began seeping into the corners and clubs of lower Manhattan. Rock, once down for the count, came back with a vengeance, largely thanks to a klatch of young British bands. Roots music, especially blues, grew rapidly in popularity as folk enthusiasts expanded their horizons. In this intoxicating milieu, John Sebastian, Zal Yanovsky, Joe Butler and Steve Boone united to form the Lovin' Spoonful. Originally a jug band with folk roots, they readily incorporated the sounds they heard all around them. Combining British Invasion jangle with the blues' growl and folk's attention to lyrical detail, they forged a sound completely their own. Accomplished musicians all, they had two secret weapons: the guitar virtuosity of Zal Yanovsky and the rising songwriting talent of John Sebastian.
The first Spoonful single, "Do You Believe in Magic," took AM radio by storm in June of that year, reaching #9 on the Billboard Hot 100. Featuring an irrepressible melody, a chiming autoharp and Yanovsky's tasteful fills, it was an audacious debut. Their inaugural Kama Sutra LP, also titled Do You Believe in Magic, followed in November 1965. Containing three other Sebastian originals and one song credited to the band, the balance of the LP contained traditional blues covers and songs by contemporary writers. Reaching #32 on the Billboard Top 200, it established the band as one of country's brightest new talents.
By the release of their second album, Daydream, in March 1966, the band's songwriting chops had fully blossomed, particularly Sebastian's, who wrote or co-wrote all but one of the songs. The album's first single, "You Didn't Have to Be So Nice" reached #10 on the Hot 100 and married a signature Yanovsky riff with a galloping piano part to form an indelible hook. The title track, a mid-tempo reverie with an ace whistling solo, did even better, soaring to #2. Skipping ahead a few decades, the album cut "Butchie's Tune" was used to great effect in season five of Mad Men.
The band soon returned with Hums of the Lovin' Spoonful. Consciously working in different styles, the band essayed country ("Nashville Cats"), folk balladry ("Rain on the Roof") and psych- tinged rock ("Summer in the City"), among other sounds. This time, all the songs were originals and it was the last full album recorded by the original quartet. It stands as a triumphant ending to one of the most exciting chapters in the American rock story of the 1960s, a perfect encapsulation of a time when it seemed anything was possible in music. Magical DirtMagical Dirt is RADIO MOSCOW's fourth studio album. The band's fountainhead Parker Griggs, along with partners-in-crime Anthony Meier (bass) and Paul Marrone (drums), have cultivated yet another blues-rock masterpiece that crossbreeds late '60s psych-rock and face-melting guitar histrionics with the foundation-crumbling rhythms from early '70s hard-rock, and even includes a couple of harrowing tracks built from the bedrock of rural Delta blues. After Trout Mask Replica, which was critically acclaimed but sold poorly, each of the group's following three albums was slightly more conventional than the one before. Beefheart wanted more commercial success - hence his decision to work with the widely respected team of producer Ted Templeman and engineer Donn Landee, who also created hits for artists such as the Doobie Brothers, Carly Simon and Van Morrison. It Comes To You In A Plain Brown WrapperOne of the most exciting aspects of reintroducing so much rare and incredible music to the world is being able to finally make available material thats been in label-vault limbo since the day it was recorded, vital sounds locked away from the deserving ears of the legions of devoted music fans we at Sundazed count ourselves among. But when were able to present previously shelved material by one of the most visionary and influential artists of all time, in exceptional fidelity, with the look and feel of the packaging that the artist originally meant it to have? Well, then, that just takes everything to another level completelya level thats certainly been reached with the exclusive vinyl-only issue of Captain Beefheart and His Magic Bands mind-blowing lost 1967 sessions.
Recorded in part as the follow-up to Safe as Milk, Beefhearts debut from earlier that year, the world-shattering material on It Comes to You in a Plain Brown Wrapper was rerecorded, truncated, and issuedwithout the Captains approvalas Strictly Personal in 1968. Mastered directly from the original analog tapes and featuring a wealth of unedited takes never before on vinyl, Sundazeds stunning gatefold double-LP release of this infamously enigmatic opus comes to you wrapped in a sharp outer sleeve bearing specially commissioned artwork by Frank Zappa/Straight Records illustrator Cal Schenkel replicating the albums planned 67 design; inside are rare photos and fascinating, exhaustive liner notes by Magic Band drummer John Drumbo French.
So here, then, is Captain Beefheart and His Magic Bands second album of gloriously disjointed avant-rock/blues and free-jazz skronk, presented just as natureand the Captainintended. Even after more than 40 years, this music is still hopelessly ahead of its timeor, as one-time Magic Band member Ry Cooder once described it, right on time.1. Gimme Dat Harp Boy

A Different ShipHere We Go Magic's sophomore album, Pigeons, had only been out a few weeks when the seeds for A Different Ship were planted in late June of 2010 at the Glastonbury Festival. The New York band had been on the road since Spring, wowing audiences with their uncanny live chemistry, turning album tracks into intricately groovy sonic explorations where the band seemed almost synchronously possessed. That had been their sweet spot since their earliest rehearsals together, when singer/songwriter Luke Temple, bassist Jennifer Turner, guitarist Michael Bloch, drummer Peter Hale and then-keyboardist Kristina Lieberson bonded over a shared belief in musical spontaneity and a kind of improvisation that feels too divinely ordered to be called "jamming."
At Glastonbury "the crowd wasn't giving us much to work with, except for these two guys standing in front," Temple continues. "One of them was dancing around like a maniac and I was like, 'I'm just gonna play for those two guys. Then I realized, 'That's fucking Thom Yorke and Nigel Godrich!'" The band, Yorke and Godrich became fast friends and the producer eventually proposed working together. In particular, the producer said he thought he could help them better communicate their hypnotic and hypnagogic live vibe on tape.
And he did. A Different Ship is Here We Go Magic's most remarkable and captivating album yet, with an emotional and musical arc that is alternately calming and anxiety-inducing, and often both at once. "I Believe In Action" and "Make Up Your Mind" sound like they're being beamed in from outer space, while more earthbound tracks such as "Miracle of Mary," "Over The Ocean" and "Alone But Moving" amble in a somnolent haze, with Temple's cool timbre cutting through the fog.
After demoing and tracking in both LA with Godrich and later upstate New York, the band ultimately ended up recording the bulk of the album in Godrich's London studio. By that time the band was bursting with new ideas and the songs just started flowing."I think the best stuff on the record is the stuff that was thought about the least," says Temple. "Tracks like 'Over The Ocean,' 'I Believe In Action,' 'Made To Be Old,' written in the morning and recorded the same afternoon.
In London, with an array of huge sounds at their disposal, they found it easier to stick to their "keep it simple" rule. "When Jen produced 'Pigeons,' the sounds were a lot more condensed and we got really into finding the infinite space inside something that's super on top of itself," explains Bloch. "Then suddenly when you're working in a studio like Nigel's, it's all these enormous sounds. Just one of Jen's bass notes fills up the room.
Despite an incubation period of nearly a year, and a writing process that spanned two continents, the ten songs of A Different Ship carry a consistent thematic concern, what the band describes as an "unresolved tension between valuing being alone and valuing being connected." Says Temple: "The music is beautiful, but feels like it's brittle and about to crack. It's always suspended in between major and minor, happy and sad, trying to find that middle ambiguous place. A lot of the endings of these songs just kind of stop, like things are left suspended, floating in space. That's a real characteristic of us as a band moving forward, even when we're sort of unsure, and knowing we'll find happy accidents along the way."1. Hard To Be Close
