    Manhattan

When it came time to record their Warner Bros. debut, the band looked directly to its hometown for inspiration. MANHATTAN is more than an album -it's a statement of purpose and a portrait of life in New York City. We were all bartenders, so the songs are tales of experiences we had or saw, and other people who were characters in our life during the first year we were in this band, Cummings says. (And for the record, SKATERS chose their band name because it captures their young and fearless attitude.

The album kicks off with subway noises, Because that's the sound of our lives, Cummings says. The disc was even recorded by John Hill (Santigold, Wavves) in the API room at Greenwich Village's iconic Electric Lady Studios, named after its one-of-a-kind board.

MANHATTAN features other little pieces of the city, too, in the form of sounds and conversations Hubbard nabbed on an old-school handheld tape recorder. There's a cab ride in there, there's kids yelling in Brooklyn, girls talking in a cafÉ, Rubin says. It's like a book of short stories, Cummings adds, deadpanning, It's Salinger's Nine Stories but it's Eleven Stories by SKATERS. And the writing is much better.

    57th & 9th

A&M/Interscope Records announces the release of Sting's new album, 57th & 9th, his first rock/pop project in over a decade.

57th & 9th represents a wide range of Sting's musical and songwriting styles, from the ferocious, Road Warrior-style imagery of "Petrol Head," to the anthemic, "50,000" and the raucous, guitar-driven first single, "I Can't Stop Thinking About You." The album was recorded with Sting's long-time collaborators Dominic Miller (guitar) and Vinnie Colaiuta (drums) and includes contributions from drummer Josh Freese (Nine Inch Nails, Guns n' Roses), guitarist Lyle Workman and the San Antonio-based Tex-Mex band The Last Bandoleros. Riding a wave of inspiration, 57th & 9th came together impulsively, with sessions completed in just a few weeks.

"It happened very quickly, very spontaneously," he says. "My idea always is to surprise myself and the people I'm working with-and, hopefully, the listeners."

The album, produced by Martin Kierszenbaum, takes its title from the Manhattan street corner that Sting crossed each day as he walked to the studios in Hell's Kitchen where the recordings were done. Sting notes that if there's a theme in the lyrics of 57th & 9th, it's the idea of travel and motion, most apparent in the autobiographical "Heading South On The Great North Road" and in "Inshallah," a first-person account of the global refugee crisis, written from a humanitarian point of view.

"It's about searching and traveling, the road, that pull of the unknown." he says. "On this album, we ended up with something that's energetic and noisy, but also thoughtful."

The Who: Live At The Fillmore East 1968

Universal Music will issue The Who Live at the Fillmore East 1968, a set of unreleased recordings from the second of two nights played at Bill Graham's legendary, but short-lived, venue in the Lower East Side of Manhattan.

The Who's manager Kit Lambert had recorded both the 5th and 6th of April shows of '68 with a view to issuing as The Who's fourth album after Sell Out. That never happened, but 50 years later sound engineer Bob Pridden (who was there in 1968) has restored and mixed songs from the 6 April show for this new archival release.

The setlist features extended versions of My Generation (33 minutes!), A Quick One , Shakin' All Over and many other Who classics. This will be issued as a gatefold triple vinyl set.

Workin' With the Miles Davis Quintet (Awaiting Repress)

Undeniably one of the best small bands in the history of jazz, the Miles Davis quintet of the mid-1950s made history at the Cafe Bohemia on Manhattan's Barrow Street and in the New Jersey studio of Rudy Van Gelder for Prestige. This is the 3rd in a series of four LPs taped in two marathon studio sessions, done in the style of sets at the Bohemia, producing music of high energy and immediacy. This is a mix of standards and originals, up-tempos and ballads, and a trio number, Ahmad's Blues. Miles is the sole survivor of this quintet but the music made in the mid-50's period will live forever. The excitement of the emerging John Coltrane; the informed, melodic swing of Red Garland; the tremendous snap and pop of the rhythm trio of Garland, Paul Chambers and Philly Joe Jones, and Miles' poignancy and intense swing. Recording engineered by Rudy Van Gelder.

Sun is the first album of original material from Cat Power since her critically acclaimed 2006 album The Greatest and follow-up to her second covers album Jukebox which was released in 2008. In addition to the lead single Ruin, the 11-song set is highlighted by the New York City homage "Manhattan" and the 11-minute epic "Nothing But Time" which features backing vocals by Iggy Pop.

Chan Marshall has moved on from her collaborative forays into Memphis soul and Delta blues. She wrote, played, recorded and produced the entirety of SUN by herself, a statement of complete control that is echoed in the songs' themes. The narrative arc of the record is deeply American in its spaciousness and optimism, but the music itself is defiantly modern and global.

Sting, wove Jamaican rhythms into his early work with The Police as well as his solo repertoire. While Shaggy, born and raised in Kingston, Jamaica and cutting his musical teeth in the dance hall clubs of Brooklyn and Manhattan. The Show Must Go On (Pure Pleasure)

The best R&B songwriter and soul singer that most people have never heard of, Sam Dees has written songs for countless artists, including Gladys Knight, Aretha Franklin, Whitney Houston, George Benson, the Temptations, Teddy Pendergrass, Millie Jackson, Jackie Wilson, the Manhattans, Regina Belle, KC & the Sunshine Band, Willie Clayton, and many others. He's also a pretty fine singer, having recorded for the Chess, Atlantic, Polydor, and SSS labels, and he had a nice string of his own hits in the 1970s.

His 1975 Atlantic album The Show Must Go On has long been regarded by Southern soul aficionados as one of the best of the genre. Sounding a bit like a deeper-voiced Curtis Mayfield (in both style and theme), Dees sings with assurance, wisdom, passion, and a whole lot of soul here. Songs like Child of the Streets, Troubled Child, & What's It Gonna Be, share Mayfield's commitment to social commentary, and Dees knows his way around a love song, too. It's absolutely essential.
    Steve Leggett/AMG

    About Pure Pleasure

At the beginning of the 90s, in the early days of audiophile vinyl re-releases, the situation was fairly straightforward. Companies such as DCC, Mobile Fidelity, Classic Records and, of course, Pure Pleasure all maintained a mutual, unwritten ethical code: we would only use analogue tapes to manufacture records.

During the course of the present vinyl hype, many others have jumped on the bandwagon in the hope of securing a corner of the market. Very often they are not so ethical and use every imaginable source to master from: CDs, LPs, digital files, MP3s - or employed existent tools from the 80s and 90s for manufacturing.

A digital delay is gladly used when cutting a lacquer disc because tape machines with an analogue delay have become quite rare and are therefore expensive. When cutting the lacquer, the audio signal is delayed by one LP revolution against the signal, which controls the cutter head, and for this a digital delay is very often employed. Of course, the resultant sound signal is completely digital and thus only as good as this delay.

We should like to emphasize that Pure Pleasure Records on principle only uses the original master tape as the basis for the entirely analogue cutting of lacquer discs. In addition, the pressing tool is newly manufactured as a matter of principle.

We only employ existing tools for manufacturing if an improved result is not forthcoming, e.g. the title Elvis Is Back, which was mastered by Steve Hoffman and Kevin Gray, or several titles from our Philips Classics series, which in any case Willem Makkee cut from the original masters at the Emil Berliner Studios in the 90s. It goes without saying that we only used the mother and that new tools were made for our production.

To put it in a nutshell: we can ensure you that our releases are free from any kind of digital effects and that the lacquer discs are newly cut.

    Lives and Treasure

Acrylics is the musical partnership of Molly Shea and Jason Klauber. Native to Philadelphia and downtown Manhattan, respectively, the pair began making music together while attending Ohio's Oberlin College, where they spent snowy nights in their basement droning Fender Jazzmasters in odd tunings and listening to vinyl records from New Zealand. After graduating Molly and Jason both moved to Brooklyn and decided to try something new. Acrylics started experimenting with various recording techniques and bizarre results began to emerge. Songs with folk roots grew disco branches, country skeletons wore new age skin.

They called their second album Lives and Treasure because that's just about what it cost to finish the thing. Many stories surface and vanish over the course of the album's ten tracks. The songs are concise but extremely potent, and each listen reveals something previously undiscovered.

Ranked 464/500 on Rolling Stone Magazine's 500 Greatest Albums of All Time.

The Blueprint is the sixth studio album by American rapper Jay-Z, released September 11, 2001 on Roc-A-Fella Records in the United States. Its release was set a week earlier than initially planned in order to combat bootlegging. Recording sessions for the album took place during 2001 at Manhattan Center Studios and Baseline Studios in New York City. Contrasting the radio-friendly sound of Jay-Z's previous work, The Blueprint features soul-based sampling and production handled primarily by Kanye West and Just Blaze. At the time of its recording, Jay-Z was awaiting two criminal trials, one for gun possession and another for assault, and had become one of hip hop's most dissed artists, receiving insults from rappers such as Nas, Prodigy, and Jadakiss.

Freedom Tower - No Wave Dance Party 2015

New York City is a big place. A loud place. Some of that noise is music. And some of the music is noise.

Sucking it all in and turning it loose with prejudice, the Jon Spencer Blues Explosion takes a ferocious bite out of the Big Apple with their new long-player, Freedom Tower - No Wave Dance Party 2015, the first record of the new era that demands to be stopped and frisked!

Like the best sides that percolated up from the Bronx, the Lower East Side, and Greenwich Village across the 1970s and '80s - Freedom Tower is more than a high-octane dance party record, it is a document of New York City, a chronicle of grit and terror and love!

It's all here: The Hustler and The Trust Fund Baby, the Mosh Pit Casualty, the Celebrity Chef, the Crooked Cop, the Struggling Artist, the Sucker MC, the forgotten Sex Workers and Last-Chance Cinderellas. Within these grooves are cold-water tenements, blue-chip galleries, dingy Avenue B studios, and the last real warrior poet whose dark magick brings garage rock ghosts back from the grave!

Freedom Tower is a radical portrait of New York City set to the savage funkacide of the Blues Explosion, locked and loaded with the most deadly, predatory guitar riffs that primitive magnetic tape can handle . From start to finish, Freedom Tower is overmodulated, cooked with dirt, and finished in acid rain! Freedom Tower is packed with the kind of beats and rhymes that will make even the most reserved Walter Mitty jump back and say "damn!"

For nearly a quarter-century the Blues Explosion have been sweating, freezing, eating, drinking, fucking, fighting, winning, and losing in New York City, perpetrating some of the most timeless moments of musical mayhem in the history of Manhattan and beyond. As ever, Jon Spencer tells the tales, Judah Bauer plays the blues, and Russell Simins smashes things to bits... And as always Blues Explosion stomp on the faux underground oasis peddled by bourgeois hipsters and marketing jocks to deliver the real deal - rock'n'roll that is unapologetically nasty and strong.

Rehearsed and polished in a string of secret gigs and unannounced opening slots in theaters, hotel bars, and dives (often under assumed names), and then recorded at the legendary Daptone House Of Soul in Bushwick and mixed with hip-hop cult legend Alap Momin at the cutting edge of Harlem, Freedom Tower is the most provocative statement of urban pathos and panache ever recorded.

Play this record at all-night rent parties, picnics, discotheques, and protests!

There are eight million stories in the Naked City - but there is only one Blues Explosion!

Freedom Tower - dig it now, while you still can!

    Sound Of Revolution

Warzone was a hardcore punk band from New York City. Anti-racist skinhead frontman Raymond "Raybeez" Barbieri was the group's only consistent member between its formation on the Lower East Side of Manhattan in 1982 until Barbieri's untimely death due to pneumonia on September 11, 1997. A U.S. Navy veteran, he was receiving treatment that many fans and friends have claimed was shamefully inadequate in a Veterans Health Administration facility when the illness damaged his liver and took his life at the age of 35.

Raybeez's small but loyal following accompanied the former Agnostic Front drummer from the nascent days before the "Youth Crew" era in hardcore punk, on and off of three record labels, before finally turning out en masse for two sold-out benefit shows following his passing.

He is often cited as one of the seminal influences in the genre, as well as one of its first major losses. Unlike the larger body of punk music, the highly youth-oriented hardcore music had previously felt very few such outpourings of grief. In the days after his passing, a sign hung from the awning in front of CBGBs that simply said "R.I.P. Ray." For more than a year following his death, every release on the Victory Records label was dedicated to his memory, as well as two independent compilations. Like the benefit shows following his death, these albums raised funds for several not-for-profit groups Ray had worked for which helped at-risk youth.

Yes And Also Yes (Awaiting Repress)

The title for Mike Doughty's new album, Yes And Also Yes, was the headline of his profile during an unsuccessful foray into online dating. Most of the songs found here were written at the legendary artists' colony Yaddo, where Leonard Bernstein, Aaron Copland, James Baldwin, Truman Capote, Flannery O'Connor, Carson McCullers, Sylvia Plath and a lot of all-time giants once worked.

The album was recorded in a studio in Koreatown, Manhattan from July of 2010 to April of 2011 and was produced by Pat Dilett. Supporting musicians include Andrew 'Scrap' Livingston on bass and Thomas 'Doveman' Bartlett on piano. Features the Christmas song, Holiday, where Doughty duets with Roseanne Cash as well as Into the Un, a rejected Twilight soundtrack song about goth kids on LSD in a train station.

    Fits & Starts

LP Packaging Features Custom Adhesive Wrap & 16 Page Booklet

For the tenth volume of FRKWYS, composer,
percussionist and sound designer david Van
tieghem alongside ten younger artists from
across the avant spectrum become a bulletin
    of Fits & Starts.

In July of 2012, RVNG Intl. was invited to participate in Bulletin Boards, a group
exhibition at Venus over manhattan curated by White Columns' gallery director matthew
Higgs. An extension of an ongoing project which resides in the entrance of White
Columns' downtown New York gallery, Bulletin Boards featured 24 artists/entities, each
given a new bulletin board as an inspirational starting point.

In 1981, David Van Tieghem produced the experimental music video Ear To The
Ground. The film features Van Tieghem "playing" downtown New York City, a world
in which Van Tieghem established his rhythmic roots as a member of the love of life
orchestra, a frequent collaborator with laurie anderson, and a player on steve reich's Music
For 18 Musicians, robert ashley's Perfect Lives (Private Parts) / Perfect Lives and david Byrne
and Brian eno's My Life in the Bush With Ghosts among other seminal recordings including
    his own.

In Ear To The Ground, all city surfaces become communications-or bulletins-under
Van Tieghem's twiddling, thwacking and thumping thumbs. Partially inspired by this and
by our blank but physically limited canvas space, Van Tieghem agreed to take part in
a sequence of improvised performances and creative editing to become part of our
    FRKWYS series.

We also invited ten younger musicians to post objects to the board. A cross section of
present day New York artists were represented by way of sam Hillmer as diamond terrifier
(with the aid of max alper), Future shuttle, Georgia, roberto Carlos lange as Helado negro,
darren Ho, eli keszler, Hiro kone and megafortress, alongside the regionally sympathetic
Blanche Blanche Blanche and maxmillion dunbar.

In place of business cards, broadsheets, and flyers, the objects/communications
contributed were broken toasters, firecrackers, 2x4s, thunder drums and customized
electronics, each intended as a percussive device. On opening night, the bulletin board,
disguised as assemblage, welcomed David's dialogue.

In the spirit of Ear To The Ground's infinite conversation, Van Tieghem returned to
Venus Over Manhattan to "play" the bulletin board without an audience. The process
of Van Tieghem discovering and responding to the objects/bulletins again was multitracked in high definition.

These recordings were then presented to the ten contributing musicians for further
translation, "remix" and interpretation. For the final sequence, the unique pieces were
delivered to Van Tieghem to edit and embellish as the sound collages presented as Fits
& Starts across two album length sides of our tenth volume in the FRKWYS series.

    My Friend Fish

Joseph Campbell describes a shaman as person, male or female, who has an
overwhelming psychological experience that turns him totally inward. It's a kind of
schizophrenic crack-up. The whole unconscious opens up, and the shaman falls
into it. We'll never know the whole truth about what happened when (Foxyen
drummer and former Disney child actor) Shaun Fleming moved from the West
Coast suburbs to New York, but whatever it was fractured his psyche, opened it up,
and gave birth to Diane Coffee.

In 2013, after joining the band Foxygen, Shaun Fleming left the green and golden
fields of his hometown of Agoura Hills, CA to become the third roommate in a 700
square-foot, pre-war, closet-free Manhattan apartment. He was welcomed to The
Big Apple by a nasty flu virus that drained the last bit of California sunshine out of
the skinny, Macaulay Culken-looking 26-year-old's body. As he recovered, cabin
fever supplanted the flu, and his relentless creative drive took over. Low on funds
and bored out of his gourd, he spent the next two weeks alone in his bedroom
writing and recording what would become the debut Diane Coffee LP My Friend
    Fish.

Despite his limited means (using a pseudo drum kit consisting of a snare, one
broken cymbal, and a metal pot, recording parts with an iPhone's voice memo app,
playing a detuned guitar rather than a real bass, etc) My Friend Fish sounds fully
realized and remarkably polished. From a Donovan-esque song about Sriracha,
to experiments with distortion and garage-rock, to songs like All The Young Girls
in which he gleefully channels Tom Jones with sex-bomb confidence, on My Friend
Fish Fleming's spell-casting powers are in full effect, inspiring panty-tossing glee.
After you finish listening, you'll wonder as you stretch out in bed and enjoy a
    cigarette, Who is Fish?

    Antifogmatic (Awaiting Repress)

Antifogmatic, the follow-up to the Punch Brothers' 2008 debut, Punch, is a collaboratively written collection of songs from these five wily, omnivorous bluegrass titans, as the Village Voice has called them, a quintet that the Washington Post, in turn, has described as some of the best string pickers of the new generation.

Antifogmatic is seamlessly sequenced to display the collective imagination, the instrumental and vocal power, of the band: Thile, guitarist Chris Eldridge, bassist Paul Kowert, banjo player Noam Pikelny, and fiddler Gabe Witcher. Though the quintet is now based in New York City, where they have an informal residency at Manhattan's The Living Room, they recorded and mixed the album at Hollywood's historic Ocean Way studio with iconoclastic producer Jon Brion (Brad Mehldau, Aimee Mann, Fiona Apple, Kanye West) and engineer Greg Koller. Says Witcher, We knew we needed a producer equally as well-versed in pop and rock as in instrumental music, and I don't think there is anyone more able to capture and communicate the essence of this material than Jon Brion.

The arrangements on Antifogmatic range from intimate to boisterous and back; genre-wise, the band once again ventures where no string band has ever gone before. The spare opening track You Are contrasts percussive guitar riffs with lyrical string parts that dance around Thile's sweet upper register as he spins a tale of romantic emancipation; occasionally, the other instruments give way to reveal the throb of the bass. The band also engages in some unexpectedly beautiful harmony singing, smoothing out the compelling melodic twists and turns of Welcome Home. Me and Us and Woman and the Bell both have a dream-like quality; the former, in fact, was inspired by those jumbled, thought-filled moments before sleep sets in, and the instrumentation keeps pace with the ever-shifting imagery. In contrast, Don't Need No and Rye Whiskey are foot-stomping barroom boasts and Next to the Trash is the closest the band gets to traditional bluegrass, even as the lyrics tug the piece in a more surreal direction.

Charlie Parker attracted young musicians like a magnet. Among them was trombonist Jimmy Knepper, who, at a time when tape recording was a brand-new thing, captured Bird in flight one winter night in Manhattan. He soared, and when Charles Mingus heard the music years later, he issued it as the first release on his new Jazz Workshop label. Since then, many private recordings of Parker have been made public. This was one of the first, and remains one of the best, a precious musical document.

    Crazy Rhythms

Bar/None is proud to release two classic albums by the Feelies, the much-loved group of hyperactive indie rockers from Haledon, New Jersey who did much to influence the sound of college radio in the 1980s.

Their debut album Crazy Rhythms is a masterwork of perfectly honed minimalist rock 'n' roll that leaps and darts into the corners of the listener's consciousness, a true sonic achievement that Rolling Stone called one of the 100 Best albums of the 1980s. Fans of the Velvet Underground, Wire and Brian Eno's early solo albums will surely appreciate their forces at work.

It took the Feelies six years to create their follow-up album. The Good Earth was co-produced by Feelies co-captains Glenn Mercer and Bill Million along with REM's Peter Buck, a Feelies admirer since his days as a record store clerk. The album was an early release on Coyote Records the label started by Steve Fallon of Maxwell's in Hoboken and featured the line-up that continues to this day.

Available for the first time in over a decade, deluxe packaging features liner notes by Jim Derogatis and Jim Sullivan.

Nina At The Village Gate (Pure Pleasure)

In the intimate ambiance of The Village Gate, Nina Simone made pure magic with her voice and on the keyboard, one Manhattan evening back in 1961. She sang and played with a trio, which featured her favorite guitarist, Al Shackman. We are so fortunate that the moment was captured and recorded.

I can't really categorize Nina's sound or her music and call her 'just' a fabulous jazz vocalist. Although, she plays extraordinary jazz with her voice, as in Just In Time. She has been often called a musical anomaly, because there is no one category for her work. She was trained as a classical pianist, and in cuts like Bye Bye Blackbird, the complexity of her piano comes through loud and clear. Her folk songs, like the biting House Of The Rising Sun, and Zungo, an African work song, place her at the top of a long list of folk singers. Ms. Simone's gospel songs, i.e., Children Go Where I Send You, can raise the roof and bring down the house, as she did at the Gate in '61. She is a protest singer, Brown Baby, and an actress, capable of an extraordinary range of emotions.

Nina has the rare ability to dig into her material and bring unexpected meaning to familiar lyrics. She is eclectic with her taste and her repertoire. But whatever touches Nina, and whatever Nina touches, will reach you and evoke an emotional response. Her music is as fresh today, as it was 42 years ago, singing for that Manhattan audience. They could not have loved her more then, than we do now.

    • Al Schackman (guitar)

    • Chris White (bass)

    • Bob Hamilton (drums)

Recording: 1961 in New York City

    Yours Dreamily

The Arcs' debut album, Yours, Dreamily, will be released Friday, September 4 on Nonesuch Records. In anticipation of the release, "Stay in My Corner" was premiered on June 9 at NPR Music. Of the song, NPR Music's Stephen Thompson praises, " it's got a slinky, timeless feel, propelled with alluring ease by Auerbach's falsetto and a lush instrumental backdrop befitting The Arcs' roster." The Arcs will be touring in support of the album; details will be announced soon.

The Arcs collaboratively wrote and recorded 13 tracks for Yours, Dreamily, with the musicians playing a large array of roles both vocally and instrumentally. Co-produced by Auerbach and Michels, the album was recorded in roughly two weeks through spontaneous, informal sessions across the country at the Sound Factory in Los Angeles, the Diamond Mine in Queens, Auerbach's Easy Eye Sound in Nashville, and in a lounge room at Electric Lady in Manhattan. Tchad Blake mixed the album on his horse farm in Wales.

In advance of Yours, Dreamily, The Arcs recently released a 7-inch single. Inspired by the Floyd Mayweather vs. Manny Pacquiao boxing match, the single includes the songs "Stay in My Corner" b/w "Tomato Can." "Outta My Mind," a second 7-inch and the first single being released to radio, will make its debut later in June of 2015.

Cheap Xmas: Donald Fagen Complete (Awaiting Repress)

Donald Fagen, the Grammy award wining voice of Steely Dan, since the 80's has continued to make an impact. His innovative 1981 release, The Nightfly, an instant classic was one of the first major pop releases to use the new digital recording technology, also draws an Album of the Year nomination at the Grammy awards and wins France's Grand Prix du Disques.

During the eighties, Donald takes on various projects including composing music for films (Heavy Metal, The King of Comedy, Bright Lights Big City), for other artists (Diana Ross, Yellowjackets, Jennifer Warnes, Manhattan Transfer) and co-production (The Gospel at Colonus soundtrack), as well as writing the occasional column on film music for Premiere Magazine.

As the nineties begin, Donald collaborates with producer and wife-to-be Libby Titus on a series of legendary club-concerts exploring the work of specific songwriters such as Bert Berns and Jerry Ragovoy. This culminates in several national tours and the recording, The New York Rock and Soul Revue - Live at the Beacon Theater, which features Michael Macdonald, Phoebe Snow, Boz Scaggs, Charles Brown, the Brigati Brothers and others. Walter, back in NYC to produce Donald's solo album, Kamakiriad, joins the revue for the '92 season. 1993 - 2004: Kamakiriad, an account of a dangerous journey in the sedan of tomorrow is released to widespread acclaim in '93. Meanwhile, encouraged by the response to their performances in the Rock and Soul Revue, Donald and Walter, now under the management of Craig Fruin, debut the All New Steely Dan Orchestra that summer.

At the conclusion of the Art Crimes Tour in '96, Donald and Walter begin writing for a new Steely Dan CD, the first album of all new songs in twenty years. Two Against Nature finally comes out in 2000, supported by a tour, a PBS Television concert and several other TV appearances. The album wins four Grammy awards, including Album of the Year. A few months later, Steely Dan is inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. In addition, the two songwriters become the recipients of ASCAP's Founder's Award and honorary Doctorates from the Berklee College of Music.

2003 sees the release of Everything Must Go, yet another instant classic. In 2006, Donald releases the album Morph the Cat. The three solo albums, The Nightfly, Kamakiriad and Morph the Cat were released as The Nightfly Trilogy the following year. The Steely Dan band continues to tour through the summer of 2011.

Donald is also one of the three Dukes of September, the others being Michael McDonald and Boz Scaggs.

From the Original Kama Sutra Mono Masters

Greenwich Village, 1964: While the folk boom is still in progress, other musics began seeping into the corners and clubs of lower Manhattan. Rock, once down for the count, came back with a vengeance, largely thanks to a klatch of young British bands. Roots music, especially blues, grew rapidly in popularity as folk enthusiasts expanded their horizons. In this intoxicating milieu, John Sebastian, Zal Yanovsky, Joe Butler and Steve Boone united to form the Lovin' Spoonful. Originally a jug band with folk roots, they readily incorporated the sounds they heard all around them. Combining British Invasion jangle with the blues' growl and folk's attention to lyrical detail, they forged a sound completely their own. Accomplished musicians all, they had two secret weapons: the guitar virtuosity of Zal Yanovsky and the rising songwriting talent of John Sebastian. The first Spoonful single, "Do You Believe in Magic," took AM radio by storm in June of that year, reaching #9 on the Billboard Hot 100. Featuring an irrepressible melody, a chiming autoharp and Yanovsky's tasteful fills, it was an audacious debut. Their inaugural Kama Sutra LP, also titled Do You Believe in Magic, followed in November 1965. Containing three other Sebastian originals and one song credited to the band, the balance of the LP contained traditional blues covers and songs by contemporary writers. Reaching #32 on the Billboard Top 200, it established the band as one of country's brightest new talents. By the release of their second album, Daydream, in March 1966, the band's songwriting chops had fully blossomed, particularly Sebastian's, who wrote or co-wrote all but one of the songs. The album's first single, "You Didn't Have to Be So Nice" reached #10 on the Hot 100 and married a signature Yanovsky riff with a galloping piano part to form an indelible hook. The title track, a mid-tempo reverie with an ace whistling solo, did even better, soaring to #2. Skipping ahead a few decades, the album cut "Butchie's Tune" was used to great effect in season five of Mad Men. The band soon returned with Hums of the Lovin' Spoonful. Consciously working in different styles, the band essayed country ("Nashville Cats"), folk balladry ("Rain on the Roof") and psych- tinged rock ("Summer in the City"), among other sounds. This time, all the songs were originals and it was the last full album recorded by the original quartet. It stands as a triumphant ending to one of the most exciting chapters in the American rock story of the 1960s, a perfect encapsulation of a time when it seemed anything was possible in music. Sourced from the original Kama Sutra mono masters, these masterpieces are pressed at RTI on 180gm vinyl.
