    Polish Night Music

Barren train stations, Polish factories at night, and silent hotels where lonely travelers meet. These are the images and suggested narratives that pervade the spirit of Polish Night Music, the musical collaboration between American filmmaker David Lynch and Polish concert pianist and composer Marek Zebrowski. Zebrowski and Lynch first met during the Camerimage Film Festival in Lodz, Poland and started to work together during the organic evolution of Lynch's Inland Empire.

Originally, Zebrowski served as a translator for the shooting of several Lodz-based Polish scenes in Empire, but upon discovering their shared interest in musical experimentation and improvisation, Lynch invited Zebrowski to his Los Angeles studio to participate in a series of musical experiments. From these initial collaborations, inspired by their unique and distinct connections to Poland, emerged a tangible mood and distinctly modern texture that became Polish Night Music.

Bad The John Boy (Awaiting Repress)

On the heels of David Lynch's hugely successful sophomore full length, The Big Dream, comes a very limited edition 12, "Bad the John Boy." While technically this track qualifies as a non-album or bonus track, Dean Hurley, Lynch's producer had this to say about the song: "it wasn't really recorded with the lP in
mind, but it was done around the end of last year when the bulk of the album
was being made. It was earmarked for something else entirely, but that thing
didn't happen in a way that required the song so up until now, it was 'a song
    with no home.' "

    Complimenting Lynch's left-of-center A-side, the B-side proudly features a
Venetian Snares remix of the album's title track. Despite the fact that Canadian
electronic musician Aaron Funk has been known for reinventing breakcore,
with this remix he breathes a completely new approach into the song, turning it
into something far from your typical dance remix. Hurley describes this track
as, "music for the end crawl of a bootlegged sci-fi/horror film that you borrowed
from your friend's older brother and caused you to realize for the first time that
you were actually scared in broad daylight."

Includes David Lynch & Lykke Li 7 Vinyl Single with hand-etched b-side by David Lynch

Legendary multimedia artist David Lynch returns this summer with the follow-up to Crazy Clown Time, his acclaimed 2011 solo debut.

The new album sees Lynch returning to primary songwriting and performance duties, writing 11 out of the album's 12 tracks. Also included in the lineup is Lynch's signature take on the Bob Dylan folk classic The Ballad of Hollis Brown, and a bonus track contribution featuring acclaimed Swedish musician Lykke Li.

Describing his style of music as modern blues, Lynch says, most of the songs start out as a type of blues jam and then we go sideways from there.

    Blue Velvet Soundtrack

For the first time in nearly 30 years, the haunting soundtrack to David Lynch's masterpiece 'Blue Velvet' is available on vinyl in North America. The first of many collaborations between the director and composer Angelo Badalamenti, 'Blue Velvet's' evocative score is juxtaposed with Lynch's use of early pop tunes, creating an unsettling effect that complemented the movie perfectly. You'll also find the first musical collaboration between Lynch, Badalamenti and Julee Cruise here.

Contains Falling, Theme Song Of Twin Peaks

Music Written & Produced By Angelo Badalamenti & David Lynch

Floating Into The Night is the debut album by the American dream pop musician Julee Cruise, released in 1989. The album was produced, and all songs were written by, composer Angelo Badalamenti and film director David Lynch. Badalamenti composed the music to which Lynch wrote the lyrics. Two singles were released from the album: Falling and Rockin' Back Inside My Heart, both of which are featured in Lynch's television series, Twin Peaks. An instrumental version of Falling is used as the theme song to the series.

In addition to the two singles, a number of other tracks from Floating Into The Night appeared in Twin Peaks, including Into the Night, The Nightingale and The World Spins. Mysteries of Love is featured in Lynch's 1986 film Blue Velvet; Rockin' Back Inside My Heart, Into the Night, I Float Alone and The World Spins are performed in the 1990 Lynch production Industrial Symphony No. 1 and The World Spins is featured on the soundtrack to the 2003 film The Company.

    EXI

LOVE INKS is a minimalist pop group making music that harkens back to early 80s UK (Marine Girls, Young Marble Giants) and David Lynch's Roadhouse. The group's sleek, needle-precise sound comes distinctly from Austin, Texas. It is a combination of guitar, played quietly but as if from a 12-foot deep well, and bass, creating both tension and melodic release when necessary, in conjunction with an electronic drum machine. The triangle is only completed by Sherry LeBlanc's voice, which leads the listener through every song -- whether it be mellow or dark. These three elements together make up LOVE INKS. Their use of silence and their approach to instrumentation, while sometimes coming across as confrontational, makes their music direct and sincere. Love Inks is looking forward to an EU tour this fall, following the release of EXI.

The return of Icelandic Singapore Sling with their seventh studio album. Twelve tracks of that dark, moody and broody sound that we all have come to know so well. It's like a surrealistic dream sequence out of a David Lynch movie. Walls and walls of sound, layered between darkness and light. The album contains some of the bands best songs to date, including the opening track "You Drive Me Insane" with its thump coming at you, it'll have you tasting the blood immediately. It was born out of love and hate. Love of the various music from the past, mainly rock 'n' roll, and hatred of the majority of the music around him.

Roy Orbison is often credited with having one of the most powerful voices in Rock 'n Roll.

He certainly had one of the most distinctive ones; yet his operatic quavering and impressive range were used to portray a quiet and desperate vulnerability that was foreign to most of his rebelling, sex, drugs & rock'n'roll contemporaries.

This vulnerability is probably why he was so very popular in the '60s, and why after a dip of almost twenty years he could easily reclaim his prominence in the '80s. When David Lynch (in)famously used his song 'In Dreams' in Blue Velvet the public - and Roy himself - learned that there was a different side to his sultryness, and interest in his music was renewed. To celebrate what would have been his 75th birthday Music On Vinyl is releasing The Monument Singles Collection, with amongst others "Only The Lonely", "Crying", and of course "Pretty Woman".

    Abject Skin

There's an intoxicating feeling inside Hamilton, Ontario, and Black
Baron has managed to distill the essence of that feeling into a potent
brew. In the same way that the films of David Lynch are sewn
together from the fabric that holds together dreams, Black Baron
creates songs from the fabric of Hamilton. While the local hardcore
scene has been cutting records reminiscent of the city's steel mills
since the early 1990's, Black Baron, a band comprised of some of
the city's hardcore elite, creates the soundtrack to a different side of
the city. Unlike the punishing steelfucker sound of Hamilton
hardcore, Black Baron's music is rooted in a deep sense of
melancholy, one that does not seek destruction, but rather seeps its
way into the collective consciousness following the potentiality of
destruction or abandonment. Coming from a city devastated by
economic decline following the shrinking of its industrial sector,
Black Baron evokes the haunting memory of the closure and loss of
Hamilton landmarks at a time when the city appears to be on a
    cultural upswing.

To ascribe a genre stamp to Black Baron's music feels like sacrilege.
While on paper the band's sound could loosely be described as postpunk,
the dreamy, nearly aquatic tones, dazzling riffage, and
unabashed lyrical melodrama add dynamic elements to their
sound that are typically missing from that of their peers. The band's
debut full-length album Abject Skin, which is chock full of new
material along with refined versions of tracks taken from their 2013
tape Divine Chains, is a representation of a band sticking to their
hometown roots all while carving their own vicious path.

    Chinatown Soundtrack

    Newly Remastered Audio

Housed In A Deluxe Stoughton Tip-On Jacket

Sometimes, it doesn't take very long to create something brilliant. When producer Robert Evans rejected Phillip Lambro's original score for Chinatown, Jerry Goldsmith was hired to create another, from scratch, in just 10 days.

To say he rose to the challenge is an understatement. Goldsmith, a 20 year veteran of the TV and movie industry with credits including Dr. Kildare, Planet Of The Apes and even The Waltons theme, turned in a work that was both a career peak for him and the savior of Roman Polanski's masterpiece of neo-noir.

What was clever about it? It wasn't quite straight jazz, it wasn't quite classical. It was identifiably a movie soundtrack, but an unusual one at that, leaning heavily on Uan Rasey's mournful trumpet solos, sparingly using pianos, harps, strings and percussion, and employing sounds and crashes as overtures. It doesn't try to speak to the film's 1930s setting so much as to the mood and feel of the movie, a piece about political and moral corruption in a water-starved LA featuring Jack Nicholson at the absolute top of his game.

"I remember [Evans] speaking about the music having a contemporary feel, contemporary meaning the '30s," Goldsmith said in an interview before his 2004 death. "I said, 'Bob, I don't think so - you see that on the screen, why should I do that in the underscore? Emotions are timeless.'"

Originally released as a soundtrack in 1974, and long out of print, Cinewax's reissue is remastered from the original tapes and is presented with brand new artwork by acclaimed illustrator and painter Sterling Hundley, with layout by Jay Shaw. Drop the needle and hear why Chinatown is, reportedly, David Lynch's favorite soundtrack. Goldsmith was right about emotions

[The music of the Tijuana Panthers] sounds something like they had

    Cramps in a sunlit garage."
    - LA Weekly

the polished punx in vintage pop-snarlers like the Only Ones, the
    Real Kids, or Generation X."
    -Spin

Live and on record, the Tijuana Panthers are a great band. You
could say garage, punk or surf while describing their sound, but
they're harder to pin than that. The truth is that they write classic
songs that don't depend on tropes from any genre. They craft perfect
pop and deliver it with energy and immediacy. However, the real
magic of this band is in their weirdness.

Behind their picturesque portraits of daily life is an aching despair.
This subtle contrast creates an eerie tension between the ideal, the
real and the surreal. You suddenly realize they're not the happy-golucky beach boys you tried to pin them as, but more akin to sexually
frustrated soda jerks in a David Lynch film. And this all makes sense
with the fact that they come from Southern California's shadier city
of Long Beach, not exactly the fun in the sun that California dreamers might expect.

For Wayne Interest, the Panthers team up with producer Richard
Swift. The recordings took place at Swift's studio in Oregon where
the band decidedly took risks in performance and production. The
risks paid off. With Swift's direction and upgrade in fidelity, Wayne
Interest sounds just as compelling in headphones as it would at a
house party in East LA. It also gives the listener a closer look at the
idiosyncrasies of the Tijuana Panthers, only making it clearer that
there's something off about these creeps. Their weirdness, or boldness to be whoever they may be, is what makes this band great. It's
a rare quality. The more you listen to the Tijuana Panthers the more
    you wonder about them.

    Nobody's Watching (Pre-Order)

Steady Holiday is an appropriate name for an artist whose music feels like the soundtrack to your fondest memory. Or your deepest heartbreak. Or the dream sequence from a David Lynch film. There's a nostalgia present in Dre Babinski's songwriting that leaves you longing for the familiarity of a bygone era - just not one you can necessarily pin down.

After years growing up playing in bands around Los Angeles, Dre recently began writing and recording for herself - on her own, in secret, developing a body of work about hidden desire itself. Establishing a sound defined by her featherlight voice floating above sweeping strings, her 2016 debut Under the Influence led to opening for artists like Mitski, Unknown Mortal Orchestra and Clap Your Hands Say Yeah.

Whereas the first record took us on a trip through the deeply personal, Dre's sophomore album Nobody's Watching zooms way out. What began as a concept record about two archetypal crooks developed into an exploration of universal themes like greed, fear and self-interest; the ugly and troubling edges of human nature. It's a good time for that.

Dre worked with producer Gus Seyffert (Roger Waters, Beck) to create a sound that echoes the narrative told on Nobody's Watching. From the sunny and observant to the dark and critical, the tone ranges from levity to paranoia through layers of analog synths and chilling strings played by Dre herself. There are moments of cinematic intensity reminiscent of a James Bond score, yet the subtle tape hiss and creaking chairs remind us that this is an album made by people. It is warm, and it breathes, the same way the human touch can both soothe and suffocate.

Nobody's Watching is the natural next step for Dre and Steady Holiday, a project that builds worlds we wish to escape to or from. It's an examination of the inner narratives we all share but keep in the shadows, where the characters may not always be likable, but they do what they can to survive - like we all do.

    Wild Onion

" Twin Peaks have perfected the kind of songwriting that puts you in a practiced, happy headlock."
    - Pitchfork

"The Chicago teenagers who make up the band Twin Peaks make a confident old-school indie rock chug that should be beyond their years."
    - Stereogum

"Although steeped in the amp-shattering sensibilities of a garage band, the triumphant Sunken listens like a sunny pop record. It's lovably fuzzy, worn with the character of beloved jukebox hits."
    - Consequence of Sound

Don't bother asking Twin Peaks about the deeper meaning of their band name. They simply thought it sounded cool, which explains why their second album Wild Onion isn't as spooky or surreal as David Lynch's short-lived TV show. It's more like a modern day Nuggets, with Ty Segall, Black Lips and Thee Oh Sees curating instead of Lenny Kaye. Not literally, of course. But the spirit of those garage demigods is alive and well alongside subtle nods to everything from the Pixies and Tame Impala to the godfathers of guitar-guided pop music, the Beatles, the Rolling Stones and the Beach Boys.

If combining the influence of so many classic artists seems like a lofty goal for a group of 20 year olds, just remember that Twin Peaks' core quartet-frontman Cadien Lake James, guitarist Clay Frankel, bassist Jack Dolan and drummer Connor Brodner-has roots that reach back to elementary school. After cutting his teeth during his high school freshman year in a duo with his older brother Hal, James reconnected with his old chums and formed what would become Twin Peaks, and the chemistry was immediately undeniable.

Having quickly cut their debut LP, 2013's Sunken, in Cadien's basement so they could sell it on tour, the band was excited to spend more time developing Wild Onion, a record that reveals a level of maturity beyond all the amp-singeing solos, ragtag rhythms and dizzying voices of three distinct singer-songwriters. Unlike acts who let their egos get in the way, Cadien, Clay and Jack share the spotlight and play to one another's strengths as Connor keeps things moving with a steady beat.

    Not Real

Not Real' is the second album by Stealing Sheep which has been written, recorded and produced by band members Becky Hawley, Emily Lansley and Lucy Mercer at their studio in Liverpool. The band met in 2010 and work together creating music and visual art.

The unifying theme of the new album 'Not Real' is an interplay of fact and fiction; the edge of dreams and limits of reality. These visions are grounded by bright melodies and insistent beats and unified by vocal harmonies; sometimes metronomic and chant-like, sometimes choral and pop.

It follows their debut, 'Into the Diamond Sun', released in 2012 by Heavenly Recordings. The first album morphed their individual styles to create a 'medieval-kraut-folk' inspired sound. They were described as an unanticipated 'pagan pop revival' and since its release have toured as guests of Postal Service and Alt-J, opened for St.Vincent in Paris, performed the songs of David Lynch at the Barbican and collaborated with the Radiophonic Workshop on an original soundtrack to the cult 70's science fiction film 'Le Planete Sauvage'.

For the second album they have concentrated on developing the sonic aesthetic of their new music. "We are more focussed about what we are trying to do. Everything has a reason for being there." They have been experimenting with tuned percussion, programmed beats, trigger samples and worked with effected synths, utilising the guitar and lap steel more sparingly and introducing more processed sounds. They've drawn inspiration from 50's exotica, electronic music and 80's pop and have been greatly influenced by the likes of Grace Jones, Can, Delia Derbyshire, Eden Ahbez, Moon Dog and John Carpenter. Grayson Perry's pop-folk art and the band's self-created mythologies were also a source of inspiration for song writing.

This is an alternative pop record that has been 'self-manufactured' by the band. Having learned new skills in the studio over the last years, the band (assisted by Sam Crombie and Joe Wills) have self-produced the album. They have used the studio not only as a writing tool but also as an instrument; experimenting with post production and varying instrumentation and layered textures. "We started off in pre-production doing all the demos ourselves" say's Becky "the demos captured an atmosphere that we wanted to carry forward to the album. The result was a hypbrid of casual takes and more considered recordings

Individual songs on the album have different environments and creatures that go with them, often inspired by the galactic rather than earth-bound imagery. Becky: "I imagine dehumanised worlds, planets with creatures that have evolved in a completely different way

The visual side is highly important to the band, all of whom have art backgrounds. "We like to be involved in all the aspects of the presentation because it's symbiotic to the music." They collaborate with artists and with 'the costumologists', coming up with ideas like "outfits that texturally reflect rhythms" and "frequency triggered, light-up costumes". The colourful and organic album cover, a collaboration between photographer Charlotte Rutherford and collage artist Louise Mason, shows their confident image for this record: as they tread the lines of surreal pop.

There is no stopping the imaginations of Stealing Sheep - but like lucid dreams, these are controlled fantasies and skilfully created worlds. Follow them on a hypnagogic journey as they sing: "listen to yourself and look within".

    Mystery Girl Expanded

Everyone involved with Mystery Girl sensed the magic in Roy Orbison, who, in 1988, was enjoying a full creative renaissance and resurgence of popularity. One of Roy's classic recordings, "In Dreams," memorably lip-synched into a hurricane lamp by Dean Stockwell, had served as a key thematic element in David Lynch's "Blue Velvet," igniting a renewed interest in the Big O.

In a series of bold aesthetic moves, Orbison directly addressed his legacy, first with Class of '55 (a 1986 reunion album with fellow Sun Records alumni Johnny Cash, Jerry Lee Lewis and Carl Perkins) and then, In Dreams: The Greatest Hits, where Orbison recut many of his biggest songs, using 1980s technology to produce results often surpassing his original recordings.

At this same time, Roy Orbison became a founding member of the Traveling Wilburys, the roots rock supergroup also featuring Bob Dylan, George Harrison, Jeff Lynne, and Tom Petty. It was during work with the Wilburys that the vision for Mystery Girl, a new Roy Orbison album made of original songs from a variety of writers-including Roy Orbison, Diane Warren, Elvis Costello, Wesley Orbison and U2s Bono and the Edge (among others)-began taking shape.

"When he sang it, it was absolutely magnificent," said Jeff Lynne, who would produce tracks for Mystery Girl. "His voice, I had never heard a voice like that live, you know, in the studio, ever . He had this wonderful spirit, almost like a kid in many ways.

He was just a happy guy. I love him . One of the proudest things I've ever done is to have become his friend. I'd look at him and just go, 'Wow, it's him. The Big O.'"

Roy's core group of musicians on the original Mystery Girl recordings included Jeff Lynne (guitar, piano, bass, backing vocals), Tom Petty (acoustic guitar, backing vocals), Mike Campbell (guitar, bass, mandolin), Jim Keltner (drums), Howie Epstein (bass, backing vocals), and Benmont Tench (piano, organ, cheap strings). Contributing artists on the album include Barbara Orbison, Roy Orbison, Jr., Al Kooper, George Harrison, Bono, T Bone Burnett, Steve Cropper, The Memphis Horns, and more.

"I was just taken by how amazing this guy was. Just sitting, singing softly, sitting on the sofa with an acoustic guitar, his voice was unbelievable." remembers Tom Petty. "The music will live on, you know; it's very timeless music."

Mike Campbell added, "Any time I hear one of Roy's songs, wherever I am, I just stop and listen to it and he's there, you know. His artistry and his voice and his spirit and the depth of his soul is so unique and it just connects with you in such a deep way . He just had a way of getting into your heart."

"He was a real innovator, truly a great singer," said Bono. "The real rebels to me always had manners. Elvis, you know, and Roy, Roy was a true gentleman. And that's a scary thing in a man, do you know what I mean? A man that's so sure in himself that he can be polite."

The legendary guitarist Steve Cropper confided that, "I've only met basically three, maybe three-and-a-half, of what I call 'light bulbs' in my life. And what I mean by 'light bulbs' is they're the brightest one in the room and when they walk in the door every head turns. Every head. Not just a few, not some people still talking in the corner. It's like everyone stops what they are doing. Elvis Presley, Otis Redding and Roy Orbison. And I saw that happen to Bill Clinton. So, there you go and I've never seen that happen to anybody else, ever."

    Blues of Desperation (Awaiting Repress)

GRAMMY-nominated blues-rock guitar icon Joe Bonamassa announces his 20160solo album, Blues of Desperation (J&R Adventures). Like his previous solo disc, 2014's Top 10 Billboard hit Different Shades of Blue, this record features all-original material, and it sees the maverick superstar guitarist, singer and songwriter tossing away the rule book as he continues to reinvent and redefine the blues-rock genre like no other artist working today.

I want people to hear my evolution as a blues-rock musician, says Bonamassa, somebody who isn't resting on accomplishments and who is always pushing forward and thinking about how music can evolve and stay relevant.

The writing sessions for Blues of Desperation took Bonamassa back to Nashville, where he'd composed Different Shades of Blue, to work with some of Music City's top tunesmiths, people like James House, Tom Hambridge, Jeffrey Steele, Jerry Flowers and Gary Nicholson.

These are some of the best guys in the business, Bonamassa raves. Lyrically, you'll hear the proverbial trains, mountains, valleys and other blues references about heartbreak and loneliness but there are also some poignant moments about getting away from the stressful, crazy demands of life and losing yourself with your special someone. I think anybody will be able to relate.

Bonamassa and his longtime producer Kevin Shirley (Led Zeppelin, Iron Maiden, Journey) convened at Nashville's Grand Victor Sound Studios (formerly known as RCA Studio A), and during an intense, five-day period they recorded 11 galvanizing songs with a crack group of musicians including drummers Anton Fig and Greg Morrow, bassist Michael Rhodes, keyboardist Reese Wynans, horn players Lee Thornburg, Paulie Cerra and Mark Douthit, and background singers Mahalia Barnes, Jade McRae and Juanita Tippins.

Of his decade-long collaboration with Shirley, Bonamassa says, I can explain our relationship with one word - 'trust.' I completely trust in Kevin and his musical promptings. He pushes my musical ability by challenging me to not just rest on my laurels or settle for 'good.' He expects more out of the other musicians as well and will not hold back when he sees us falling back into our usual routine.

Which sometimes calls for unorthodox measures, says Shirley, who admits that his idea of augmenting Bonamassa's usual recording band with second drummer Morrow was engineered to ruffle Joe's feathers.

I wanted him to work a little harder, like in his early years, he says, so I brought in an additional drummer, just to throw the cat amongst the pigeons. Of the results, Shirley raves, Recording 'Blues of Desperation' is one of the most exciting recording projects I've done. What a joyful noise we made!

Blues of Desperation is Bonamassa's most powerfully diverse and boldly realized album yet, with the material ranging from the gutsy, gritty blues call to arms of This Train (Joe's guitar is set to rude throughout) to the elegant yet emotionally shattering ballad What I've Known for a Very Long Time to the soul-nourishing, acoustic-based Americana of The Valley Runs Low, on which Bonamassa's voice rises up majestically to meet Barnes, McRae and Tippins in gospel-like rapture. And then there's the bleary, tequila-soaked Drive, dripping with the kind of raw, wicked and unsettling sensuality that could make David Lynch green with envy.

Throughout the record, Bonamassa's epic guitar playing conjures up stirring benedictions and explosive exorcisms of sound. No Good Place For the Lonely features some of the guitarist's most cauterizing licks yet, and the walloping title track is a white-knuckled, six-string thrill ride guaranteed to jolt the senses. Guitar fans everywhere (like those who recently voted Bonamassa Best Blues Guitarist in Guitar World magazine by an overwhelming margin) will consider Blues of Desperation a treasure trove of axe riches.

There are some long solos on this record and even some mini-jams in the middle of a track where the band would just jive and crank it out, he says. [During those jams], we do a tip of the hat to Beck and Clapton from the '70s. I think guitar nerds and music fans like myself will love it.

Packed with unparalleled musicianship and teeming with the most enthralling collection of songs in Bonamassa's career, Blues of Desperation is guaranteed to knock out critics and fans alike. By exceeding his own vertiginously high artistic goals, Bonamassa is bound to shatter all other expectations with this record and reach new audiences - no mean feat when you continue his astonishing track record of hits now includes 15 #1 Billboard Blues Albums (more than any other artist in history). 2014's Different Shades of Blue debuted at #8 on Billboard's Top 200 Chart, making it his highest charting album, his first top 10 and accounting for his biggest sales week ever. In 2014, the guitarist received his first-ever Grammy nomination (for Best Blues Album) for the album Seesaw, his second collaboration with blues singing star Beth Hart, and was named 2014's Billboard Blues Artist of the Year.

    Innerworld

In a click-bait driven music scene, it's rare to find an album that stands the test of time, but Toronto-based synth duo Electric Youth may have managed that rare feat with their spectral, stunning debut
album Innerworld. "We wanted to make something that had the sense of being timeless," says Austin
Garrick, the band's instrumentalist alongside vocalist Bronwyn Griffin. "Our ultimate goal is to make a
record that will be the favourite album of people that aren't born yet.

With their swooning collaboration with College, "A Real Hero", featured in Nicolas Winding Refn's
universally acclaimed neo-noir 'Drive', a place in the history books is arguably already theirs. After
cracking the Top 10 of the iTunes dance charts in 15 countries, the band stepped back from the limelight
to take their time to work on a full-length. "We get asked a lot 'how have guys not already put out an
album - that would have been a good time to do it'", admits Austin. "But at the end of the day, more
important for us than capitalising on timing is really making sure that we would have the record that we
    wanna have.

Recording took place between the duo's Toronto studio and their home studio in LA. Each space served
its different purpose - in Toronto Austin was able to make use of his extensive vintage synth collection,
making up what he estimates is 80% of analogue sounds on the album. In LA meanwhile, the pair
recorded Bronwyn's vocals, of which they share writing duties for -- in their space -- which includes a film
projection room. Fritz Lang's boundary-breaking twenties classic 'Metropolis' was a favourite. It's easy to
see how the vast scope of Lang's movie inspired the wide-eyed vistas of Innerworld, where soundscapes
bleed into vocals and songs take you on journeys into roads unexplored.

The artwork for Innerworld is similarly starry-eyed, with British artist Paul Roberts painting Austin and
Bronwyn as intrepid children for the cover. "He was in a group called Sniff 'n' the Tears who had a big hit
in the 70's with their song "Drivers Seat", which we came to know through its use in 'Boogie Nights'. We
loved his album covers which he would paint and from there we discovered he went on to incredible work
as an artist" says Austin. "The initial intention was for it to be more about the landscape, but we liked it
and it did make sense to us, going back to the concept of Innerworld Bronwyn and I have known each
other since we were 10 years old and a lot of the time we're still the same kids in our mind, in our inner
world. And so for us you could say, in our inner world that's what we look like - those two kids." With
their music's unquenchable sense of wonder, perhaps they're not too far from those kids today. "David
Lynch never wants to define the meanings of his films," says Austin. "Similarly, we don't like to get too
specific about the meaning of our music." When it sounds this good, who needs to put their music into
a box? Let their inner world wash over you.

    The Way We Are (Discontinued)

Following their abstract masterpiece, The World I See, The Present returns with an album that delves ever deeper into the human psyche. Like an audio equivalent of Apocalypse Now, The Way We Are is by turns terrifying, enchanting, hallucinatory, and sharply focused. A psychedelic power-trio from a mythical dimension, The Present creates a strangely familiar music, as if they had already seen your dreams and your nightmares.

In order to define the music, it might help to list some of the things it is not: it is not a pop album, neither is it a classical or jazz album. It's not an ambient album or a rock album either, but there are elements of all of these within its dense musical structure. Touchstones include the music of La Monte Young, Dmitri Shostakovich, Wolfgang Voigt, Cluster, Black Dice, Claude Debussy, Aphex Twin, Can, Arthur Russell, Boredoms, and Brian Eno-- and yet it sounds like none of these.

What it is: a kaleidoscopic trip influenced by New York City, the ocean, mountains, the sun and the trees, Andy Warhol, Yukio Mishima, David Lynch, Friedrich Nietzsche, Buddhist mantra, mass transit, cats, birds and life. Life in all its myriad complexity and confusions, in all its transcendent beauty and its horrendous brutality.

Their live show has been described as more of a sensory experience than a mere matter of listening and it's the title track-- a 35-minute epic the likes of which has not been heard since the glory days of Popul Vuh-- that best captures the band's extraordinary intensity.

Once again this work is a collaboration with the artist Andrew Kuo, whose unique vision formed the cover of The World I See and whose work provides the visual counterpoint to The Present's sonic creation. Together, they make a totality that reflects so intensely and so clearly The Way We Are.
