Original Soundtrack Of The Motion Picture By Zhang Yimou
Music By Zhang Yimou, Featuring Lang Lang On Piano & The China Philharmonic Orchestra
First Pressing Of 1000 Numbered Copies On Transparent Vinyl
Zhang Yimou's movie Coming Home (original title ''Gui lai'') is adapted from the novel The Criminal Lu Yanshi by American- based novelist Yan Geling. The film chronicles the journey of a Chinese dissident from the 1920s to the 1990s, and world premiered at the Cannes Film Festival in May of 2014. Filmmaking doesn't get more timeless than this heartbreaking historical romance, a family drama of guilt, love and reconciliation set during the aftermath of China's Cultural Revolution.
The original soundtrack has been composed by Qigang Chen, who worked as Music Director of the Opening Ceremony at the 2008 Beijing Olympic Games. In 2013 he was voted, along with Mo Yan (Nobel Laureate, Literature) and Lang Lang, ''Most Influential Chinese in the World of Culture and the Arts'' by a consortium of major Chinese media.
Chen Qigang's score, drawn from vintage Chinese revolutionary symphonies performed by legendary pianist Lang Lang, is a sentimental one. Piano is the main ''voice'' of this score, with cello, violin and female voices in upporting roles. In order to make it work with the story, the music of Coming Home features simple tunes and forms. Anything excessively rousing is avoided, with the soundtrack largely providing an understated aural backdrop, coming up to the foreground only when the occasion calls for it.LP 1

When Harry Met Sally... SoundtrackThe soundtrack for one of the biggest Hollywood successes of the '80s, When Harry Met Sally... consists of standards performed by singer and pianist Harry Connick, Jr., with a big band and orchestra arranged by Marc Shaiman.
The soundtrack album (which stands apart from the movie) was a big hit and a major step forward for the young pianist-vocalist. Connick warmly sings such numbers as It Had to Be You, Our Love Is Here to Stay, But Not for Me, and Let's Call the Whole Thing Off, while usually accompanied by bassist Benjamin Wolfe, drummer Jeff Tain Watts, and a big band. Frank Wess' warm tenor makes a brief appearance on Our Love Is Here to Stay. In addition, there are a few melodic instrumentals, including some solo Connick piano on Winter Wonderland and Autumn in New York.
The performance of Connick on this wonderful soundtrack won him his first Grammy for Best Jazz Male Vocal Performance. The soundtrack went to #1 on the Billboard Traditional Jazz Chart and was within the top 50 on the Billboard 200. Connick also toured North America in support of this album. The Lady In The Van is a big screen adaptation of writer Alan Bennett's celebrated memoir, directed by Nicholas Hytner. The film tells the true story of the relationship between Bennett and the singular Miss Shepherd, a woman of uncertain origins who 'temporarily' parked her van in Bennett's London driveway and proceeded to live there for 15 years. Their unique story is funny, poignant and life-affirming.
Best known for his work in film and television, George Fenton is one of the UK's most successful composers, who has written scores for over 100 films and collaborated with some of the most influential filmmakers. His transition from television to film scoring began in 1982 with Richard Attenborough's biopic Gandhi for which he was nominated, with his collaborator Ravi Shankar, for an Academy Award.
About the work on The Lady In The Van, George Fenton said: ''The Lady In The Van was a unique experience for me, writing a score for a story about someone I actually know ( Alan Bennett) and someone I knew or at least met (Mary Shepherd ). The film not only tells an extraordinary story but also celebrates an extraordinary character - her triumphs and failings. I hope the music in some way belongs to her because music was at her heart. She was a musician, albeit a cantankerous one. In the score I've tried to show both sides. A great opportunity for me certainly and a special occasion thanks to the beautiful playing of the Philharmonia Orchestra The BBC Concert Orchestra and the brilliant pianist Clare Hammond.''LP 1

Italian Movie SoundtracksImport
Chet Baker had a long and complicated relationship with Italy. It was a country where he was both imprisoned and adored. His first visit there took place in 1955, during his first successful European tour. It was during this tour that the quartet's pianist, the talented Dick Twardzik, tragically died in Paris from a heroin overdose. Baker was devastated, and following Twardzik's death - for which he felt some level of responsibility - the trumpeter submerged himself in the drug world and in a self-destructive spiral which would last for the rest of his life. Baker would stay in Europe for a number of months after Twardzik's death, playing with different local musicians.
Baker made his way back to New York in mid-1956 and wouldn't return to Italy until the 1959 trip that yielded the recordings included here. In fact, as Ezio Leoni (the musician in charge of the sessions) explained that Chet's trip to Milan took place in order to make two albums (one with strings and orchestra, the other with a small combo of Italian players). Baker was already an addict when the contract was signed, and before he could travel he was imprisoned in the States. Therefore, the sessions had to be postponed and shortly after this music was recorded Baker would be imprisoned again, this time in Italy. Prior to his Italian imprisonment he made the two albums expected of him and recorded some interesting tracks for movie soundtracks with different bands conducted by Piero Umiliani, which are presented on this LP. All of that music is also contained here, including a vocal version of "Arrivederci" which has been taken from the original movie itself and, for that reason, has some odd overdubbed dialogues in Italian.1. Big Band Bossa NovaA byproduct of the bossa nova fad that followed the success of Desafinado (and preceded the famous recording Getz/Gilberto), this set finds Quincy Jones utilizing and exploiting bossa nova rhythms in his arrangements for a big band. The personnel includes flÜgelhornist Clark Terry, altoist Phil Woods, pianist Lalo Schifrin, guitarist Jim Hall, and (on Soul Bossa Nova) the remarkable Rahsaan Roland Kirk. However, since the selections are all quite brief, and some of the charts are a bit cheesy and inappropriate for the gentle rhythms, this disc (although pleasant enough) is of lesser interest.

The CeltsBorn Eithne Ni Bhraonain, this classically-trained pianist was kid sister in the musical family that became Clannad, joining the Irish band in 1979 but dropping out amicably three years later to pursue her own muse. This music, produced in the mid-'80s as the soundtrack to a BBC series, was released as her debut in 1987 and promptly ignored--yet its mix of atmospheric soundscapes and Enya's lush, layered vocals, sung in both English and Gaelic, is the template for her subsequent global hits, beginning with Watermark the following year. --Sam Sutherland1. The Swell SeasonThe Swell Seasons self-titled debut record is finally available on LP for the first time. The band has went on to wider success through their work in the Academy Award winning film, Once and have since issued both a soundtrack and a second record on Anti Records. However, this was the quiet debut release that started it all, recorded shortly prior to the filming of the movie.
At the time Glen Hansard of The Frames had recently teamed up with classically trained Czech vocalist and pianist, Marketa Irglova to write a handful of affecting songs and compositions for their friend and filmmaker, John Carney. Some of these songs would go onto make the film, Once while others didnt. The two choose to issue this record on CD and digitally shortly after thinking it unlikely that there would ever be an actual soundtrack or distribution of the film they had just completed. Of course this could not have been further from what ultimately happened.
Listening back through The Swell Season in comparison to Frames records, the songs on Once or their recent record, Strict Joy one cant help but be struck by just how intimate the whole affair feels. Recorded in a small studio in the Czech Republic with a limited budget the two are joined only by two other string players giving the songs a sense of space and isolation. A feeling that works particularly well for this batch of songs and in particular a vinyl record.
The record stands on its own as a complete piece on par with some of the more personal musical statements of the last few years. The Swell Season was released prior to the Once soundtrack. When it came time to put the soundtrack together the band rerecorded four of the songs for the soundtrack. The other six songs are specific to this release and not available elsewhere.1. This Low

Peanuts creator Charles M. Schulz called on pianist extraordinaire Vince Guaraldi and his trio to compose and perform music that would reflect the humor, charm, and innocence of Charlie Brown, Snoopy, and the entire Peanuts gang for their 1965 Christmas TV special. It was a perfect match: Guaraldi strings together elegant, enticing arrangements that reflect the spirit and mood of Schulz's work and introduce contemporary jazz to youngsters with grace, charm, and creativity. What Child Is This touches on cool jazz's richly textured percussive nuances, while The Christmas Song reflects Christmas' relaxing, mellow moments. The renowned Linus and Lucy gives the Peanuts characters a fresh, energetic feel with its tantalizing meter changes, brilliant percussion, and dashing, humorous piano lines. Christmastime Is Here, perhaps the album's most endearing and eloquent moment, is six minutes of soft, lullaby-like melodic and percussive flavors. This collection of soul-soothing melodies would not be complete without the romantic gem Skating, which blends musical references to falling snowflakes with the dashing feel of swing. Finally, the uplifting, emotionally stirring swing tune Christmas Is Coming really brings the listener into the joyous light of the Christmas spirit. Fred Marshall's alluring walking basslines and drummer Jerry Granelli's hauntingly beautiful brush work give most of the album a warm foundation, while Monty Budwig and Colin Bailey shine through with eminent dexterity on bass and drums on Greensleeves. As for Guaraldi, his penetrating improvisational phrases paint pictures of the first winter snowfall, myriad glistening trees, and powdery white landscapes. With its blend of contemporary jazz and lyrical mannerisms, A Charlie Brown Christmas is a joyous and festive meditation for the holiday season.

MaydayHe's the techno punk, the unboxable nomad: Berlin DJ and producer BOYS NOIZE will release his 4th solo album MAYDAY via Boysnoize Records. The third track off the new album, "Starchild", features Channy Leaneagh of Poliça, and has been chosen as the world record by Zane Lowe on his BEATS 1 show.
Alex Ridha, better known as BOYS NOIZE, made his DJ debut at the age of 15, taking a teenager´s love of house and techno to a global scale. Accolades have been bestowed by Rolling Stone, who named him one of the "Top 10 DJ's Who Rule The World" and Beatport, who elected him "Best Electronic Act" 3 years in a row. He´s rocked the world's biggest stages, lit up Coachella three times, took Lollapalooza by storm, and headlined festivals and clubs on every continent - from Berlin techno temple Berghain to Fuji Rock in Japan to Justin Vernon's Eaux Claires Festival in the woods of Wisconsin.
As an artist and producer, Ridha has created a sound and a vision that's peerless, uncompromising, and enduring - respected in the scene, banging from underground to mainstream, it flies in the face of convention at every turn. He's remixed Depeche Mode, Daft Punk, David Lynch, Feist and Nine Inch Nails, collaborated with Snoop Dogg, Erol Alkan, and Jarvis Cocker, worked on Mark Ronson's "Uptown Special" and most recently on the soundtrack for upcoming Oliver Stone's Snowden, and released group projects with genius pianist Chilly Gonzales (Octave Minds), Skrillex (Dog Blood), and Mr. Oizo (Handbraekes). The list of names alone speak volumes about Ridha's multifaceted approach.
Now BOYS NOIZE is back with MAYDAY, his most dynamic album to date. Infectiously energetic, fusing the energy and spirit of punk with the raw power of modern techno and the early days of rave, MAYDAY exists as a new expression entirely, transporting the innocence of a bygone era into the here and now without ever sounding anachronistic or nostalgic. Collaborations with POLIÇA, HUDSON MOHAWKE, BENGA, REMY BANKS, SPANK ROCK, and some special secret guests (the liner notes are worth a read) broaden the range further than ever. "I always try to challenge myself as a producer and a musician," says Ridha. "Keeping the purity of electronic music but taking it somewhere new is the most difficult, and most motivating. MAYDAY is me taking the music I love to the future, no matter how uncertain the future seems."
MAYDAY speaks for a generation that no longer gives a damn about boundaries. Walls are for breaking down. MAYDAY's for tearing them to shreds.LP 1

SketchesClassically trained pianist, violinist, producer, and composer, Poppy Ackroyd turned heads in the neo-classical world with her previous works Escapement and Feathers, as well as her involvement in Hidden Orchestra (Tru Thoughts). Advocated by giants of the genre, Hauschka and Nils Frahm, the unique musician has returned with a mini-album to be released on Bjork's label One Little Indian Records.
The songs serve to reintroduce listeners to Ackroyd's most stunning pieces from her previous albums, all of which have been reworked into 'acoustic' solo piano arrangements alongside four brand new unheard pieces, which offer a taste of a new forthcoming record.
The record, aptly named Sketches, due to its stripped down nature, is bejeweled by thematic undercurrents - birds are the inspiration for three of the tracks, which are to be released together as the lead singles from the album.
'Birdwoman' and 'Glass Sea' feature field recordings of birds and the ocean, recorded on Brighton Beach and North Rona respectively. 'Feathers' is the title track of my second album Feathers says Ackroyd, discussing the theme of birds.
'Feathers' is a piece about hope - 'Hope is the thing with Feathers' (Emily Dickinson), 'Birdwoman' is a reworking of a piece I originally wrote as a soundtrack to a silent film based on a Siberian folk tale, and 'Glass Sea' attempts to capture the feel of a boat trip I took to the remote islands of North Rona and Sula Sgeir, North of the Outer Hebrides. The ocean was unusually still, reflecting the sky like a sheet of glass, but the sky became busy with birds as we approached the islands.
Ackroyd is a keen collaborator, having created soundtracks for film, dance, physical theater and radio. The artist won a BAFTA for an animation soundtrack that she wrote and performed in 2015. Through studying contemporary classical piano works and listening to electronic music, Ackroyd developed a unique compositional style, using contemporary pianistic ideas whilst also inhabiting the world of sound beyond the keyboard, using unconventional techniques to 'play' other parts of the instruments as well.
Talking about the recording of Sketches, Ackroyd said: The songs were recorded just outside of Brighton at Retreat Studios, close to the sea on the edge of the village, surrounded by hills, fields, and wildlife. As if by magic, it began to rain just before I began to record the track 'Rain', and ended shortly after I finished. You can hear the rain build and then die away with the music on the finished piece.
I have loved creating this solo piano album. There are normally all these layers that I use to create a world of sound, that I love to build and sculpt, but there is something really special about communicating simply through the instrument alone. With other layers there is always something to hide behind, with only the piano you can just focus on your technique and expression, everything feels very audible and exposed and that is very exciting, especially in a live context.1. One From The HeartNumbered, Limited Edition
Tom Waits and Crystal Gale Create Magic Together on Waits' Most Accessible Outing
Small Combo Band Provides Jazzy and Bluesy Support
Stupendous Sonics: Music Largely Recorded Live on Studio Floor
One From the Heart ranks among the best soundtracks in history. Essential for any Tom Waits or Crystal Gayle devotee, it sets an example of what's not only possible, but should be expected and demanded, when two likeminded artists collaborate. Heartstrings are tugged, passions kindled and lost, sentiments exchanged, skeletons dragged out of closets, seasons changed, romantic truisms cited. And its wide-open sound is supreme, the result of most tracks being recorded live in the studio, free of after-effects and interference.
Mastered from the original master tapes and pressed at RTI, Mobile Fidelity's 180g LP presents the Academy Award-nominated One From the Heart in stunning sonic relief. You'll be able to gauge the signature tones of the guitars and hear inside the cavity of Waits' piano. Perhaps most importantly, Gayle and Waits' voices now sound just feet away, with your room converted into the world's coolest late-night lounge. Spatial cues, background accents, and studio dimensions emerge with striking realism.
Inspired by a track Waits cut with Bette Midler on his Foreign Affairs effort, One From the Heart overflows with simpatico chemistry, poignant contrast, elegant atmospherics, and awestruck intimacy. On their four vocal duets, Gayle and Waits inhabit the personas of a man and woman breaking apart yet sharing common bonds. Their singing plumbs emotional depths that traverse melancholy, sensuality, and understanding. Made before Waits' baritone turned into a deep, gravel-laden instrument, the songs are more smoke than whiskey, more piano-man empathy than hipster growler.
Written by Waits, the music occupies a common ground between laidback small-combo jazz, lounge pop, and downbeat blues. Classy string orchestrations abet a crack ensemble comprised of saxophonist Terry Edwards, drummer Shelly Manne, pianist Pete Jolly, bassist Greg Cohen, and others. The arrangements seamlessly melt into both vocalists' leads, allowing every note-every piano clink, acoustic bass ripple, brushed snare drum-to register with utmost magnitude.
Experienced on stunning soliloquy pieces such as Gayle's mournful ballad "Is There Any Way Out of This Dream?" and back-and-forth collaborative efforts like the breakup take "Picking Up After You," beautiful instrumentation, spacious production, and flawless vocal phrasing take hold. You can picture the broken dreams exiting out the side doors of the dim bars and abandoned houses that pepper the narratives. Renowned for his sad songs, Waits has never been in better form, the goodbye fare clicking with unflinching honesty and personality.

Petra Goes To The MoviesPetra Haden's wondrous new album Petra Goes to the Movies offers a one of a kind opportunity to experience film scores in an extraordinary new way. Epic and evocative scores have been ingeniously recreated utilizing layers of remarkably inventive vocals. Far from a mere novelty, these interpretations retain all the emotional resonance of the originals. Out this January 22 via Anti-, Petra Goes to the Movies features Haden, a highly regarded session musician (Foo Fighters, Beck, the Decemberists) and former member of That Dog, delivering a cappella versions of scores from films such as Psycho, Rebel Without A Cause, Taxi Driver, Superman and more. Haden, who hails from a musical family that includes her father, distinguished jazz bassist Charlie Haden, has a history of working a capella; in 2005, at the suggestion of bassist Mike Watt, she recorded and released an a-cappella rendition of the Who's pop masterwork The Who Sell Out to widespread acclaim. Upon hearing the record, Pete Townshend telephoned Haden to enthusiastically thank her, proclaiming her version of his album "beautiful."
Petra Goes to the Movies is the culmination of Haden's lifelong love for both vocal interpretation and movie music: "The idea of interpreting music with my voice started when I was little," she explains. "I would hear music around the house and mimic the instruments with my voice. And I love movies but my favorite thing about them has always been the soundtracks. When people hear this record I want them to feel what I felt when I first saw the film, even if they've never seen it."
In addition to Haden's multi layered vocals, the record features notable guest appearances by jazz pianist Brad Mehldau, bassist Charlie Haden and Bill Frisell.1. Rebel Without A Cause Main Title - Rebel Without A

About Pure Pleasure
At the beginning of the 90s, in the early days of audiophile vinyl re-releases, the situation was fairly straightforward. Companies such as DCC, Mobile Fidelity, Classic Records and, of course, Pure Pleasure all maintained a mutual, unwritten ethical code: we would only use analogue tapes to manufacture records.
During the course of the present vinyl hype, many others have jumped on the bandwagon in the hope of securing a corner of the market. Very often they are not so ethical and use every imaginable source to master from: CDs, LPs, digital files, MP3s - or employed existent tools from the 80s and 90s for manufacturing.
A digital delay is gladly used when cutting a lacquer disc because tape machines with an analogue delay have become quite rare and are therefore expensive. When cutting the lacquer, the audio signal is delayed by one LP revolution against the signal, which controls the cutter head, and for this a digital delay is very often employed. Of course, the resultant sound signal is completely digital and thus only as good as this delay.
We should like to emphasize that Pure Pleasure Records on principle only uses the original master tape as the basis for the entirely analogue cutting of lacquer discs. In addition, the pressing tool is newly manufactured as a matter of principle.
We only employ existing tools for manufacturing if an improved result is not forthcoming, e.g. the title Elvis Is Back, which was mastered by Steve Hoffman and Kevin Gray, or several titles from our Philips Classics series, which in any case Willem Makkee cut from the original masters at the Emil Berliner Studios in the 90s. It goes without saying that we only used the mother and that new tools were made for our production.
To put it in a nutshell: we can ensure you that our releases are free from any kind of digital effects and that the lacquer discs are newly cut.

Improvisations For Theremin And PianoAn album as unique as it is hauntingly beautiful, this collection of improvised pieces by theremin prodigy Carolina Eyck and fellow Leipzig-based pianist Christopher Tarnow is the only album of its kind. Recorded in close collaboration with producer Allen Farmelo, these tracks truly challenge the accepted rules of any genre. The music carries the harmonic sophistication of classical, the quasi-atonal sensibilities of Coltrane and an unexpected sense of wonder and play.
Yet there is a darkness that lurks between the notes, a haunted sensibility informed by the production team's near miss of a lethal pedestrian-car accident that killed a young boy just days before the sessions. It's a feeling they couldn't shake, and it lingers in the music, adding depth and power to Eyck and Tarnow's virtuosic command of their instruments.
Eyck studied Theremin from the young age of 7 with Lydia Kavina, who developed the early technique with the now legendary student of Leon Theremin himself, Clara Rockmore. By age 14 Eyck had developed her own technique, which she published at age 17 in one of the most influential instruction books on the instrument, The Art of Playing the Theremin. Her technique is generally regarded as the most advanced in the world.
Farmelo's Producer's Notes provide both context for the theremin itself as well as insight into the way this team intentionally broke down the roles of composer, instrumentalist and producer in order to arrive at an egalitarian collaboration that would result in music borne directly from Eyck's own instinctual sense of her unique instrument. Rarely does one hear a performer from within the classical tradition play with such expressive freedom, and the team decided to leave all the music unedited in order to preserve that quality.
The broader goals of this album are to help free the theremin from the confines of stereotypes built up through Hollywood's sci-fi and horror soundtracks, as well as through the more recent adoption of the instrument into the noisier side of electronic music. Improvisations for Theremin and Piano presents the instrument's most virtuosic performer in an exceptionally candid and heartfelt recording.1. Earth and Sky
