    Reach Out

This outing finds them exploring a darker side of pop music; the place where Deep Purple's brute force meets The Carpenters' tragic wistfulness, where Blondie's power hooks cross melodic swords with Meat Loaf's drama-rock theatrics. They've expanded their palette considerably, yet the sound is unmistakably theirs.

    As Above, So Below

With a lineage dating back to 1977, South Londons Angel Witch were leading lights of a now legendary movement known as the New Wave Of British Heavy Metal that saw their path interwoven with the likes of Iron Maiden, Saxon, Samson, Praying Mantis, the Tygers Of Pan Tang and countless more.
Unlike a great many of the groups with whom they shared stages their style was dark, uncompromising and heavy; a perfect complement for the sword & sorcery-themed lyrics of songs such as White Witch, Gorgon and Angel Of Death no wonder Geoff Barton of Sounds magazine once memorably described their bludgeoning sound as: the first Black Sabbath album played through a cement mixer.

This album is unquestionably the finest thing to bear the band's name since the first, iconic release. Its contents unite newly-penned yet timeless sounding material.

    Unsung Heroes

Titled `Unsung Heroes' and produced by Hiili Hiilesmaa (HIM, Sentenced, Apocalyptica, etc.), this is the hour-plus follow-up to 2009's `From Afar', and sees the Finnish five-piece, founded in 1995, pushing their signature sound to bold new heights of drama and excess. A cinematic experience from first note to last, `Unsung Heroes' takes the listener on a journey of genuine light & shade, with the 16 minute-plus `Passion Proof Power' showing that when it comes to the epic statement, Ensiferum are very much in the front-line, swords at the ready. 'We've tried to push the different aspects of what we do as far as we can,' reflects the band, 'the sonic scope is wider than ever. The folk elements go further down that path and the metallic parts will absolutely rip your face off!' Once again, album art has been supplied by Kristian Wahlin, with featured special guests including members of Apokalyptischen Reiter plus legendary Finnish singer & actor, Vesa-Matti Loiri.

John Carpenter wasn't just a sci-fi and horror master, one of the best and most innovative directors of his generation-he was also a highly accomplished soundtrack composer whose pioneering use of synthesizers to create suspense and dread in his film scores influenced musicians both within the film world and without. And the score he composed-along with Shirley Walker-for his 1996 dystopic sequel Escape from L.A. offered the creeping, atmospheric tension that Carpenter fans crave; although, as this film was set in L.A. and featured plenty of dark humor, Carpenter and Walker threw in a bit of rock 'n' roll as well.

The original soundtrack release included a mere 16 tracks and came out on CD exclusively; now, Real Gone Music not only has added another 16 tracks to the release, but is also bringing it to vinyl for the very first time! And not just any vinyl; do you remember how in the film Snake Plisskin is infected with the plutoxin virus that will prove fatal within ten hours unless he retrieves the "Sword of Damocles" super weapon and receives the antidote? Well, our limited edition (of 1500) double-LP is being pressed on test tube clear with plutoxin virus green splatter vinyl just make sure you don't let the vinyl scratch your skin! Brand new gatefold artwork featuring stills from the film production completes the package.

Instantly confronted by the sword's influence, Arthur is forced to decide when to become involved with his power. The Covenant, The Sword And The Arm Of The Lord

Cabaret Voltaire (CV) started out in the mid-70's as industrial noise outfit. There was a brief industrial-disco phase for CV in the the mid-80's, followed by house. At the dawn of a new decade, Cabaret Voltaire, now Stephen Mallinder and Richard H. Kirk (Chris Watson left to take a more scientific curve with experimental/noise group 'The Hafler Trio'), started to ease from techno/bleep into trance/ambient. The results were quite startling and Cabaret Voltaire finally regained the attention they deserved. At the height of the trance/ambient wave, Cabaret Voltaire parted ways. While Mallinder went off to Australia to study, Kirk continues on with solo projects (Richard Kirk, Sandoz, etc).

1985's Arm of the Lord (reissued as The Covenant, The Sword and the Arm of the Lord) proves that no band could be so productive without a few tricks up its sleeve. Titled after an American neo-Nazi religious zealot organization, the record crossbreeds trademark electro-rhythm attack with odd breaks, varied tempos, the return of eerie found voices, unpolished production and harsh dissonance. The Arm of the Lord finds Cabaret Voltaire at the crossroads between their early experimentalism and all out dance and nascent techno, and certainly much further down that latter road than Red Mecca and 2 X 45 or even Micro-Phonies. But as 'normal' as it sounds, it's much weirder than most eighties pop records with many samples of Charles Manson, movie clips and lots of signature Cab-Volt noise.

    Rose Mountain

On the cusp of celebrating 10 years as a band, Screaming Females announces Rose Mountain, the New Jersey DIY-punk trio's sixth LP due February 24 on Don Giovanni Records. The band self-produced their previous releases (with Steve Albini engineering their 2012 LP Ugly and the 2014 concert album Live at the Hideout) but overturned the long-standing, self-imposed rule this time by bringing in Matt Bayles (Mastodon, the Sword) as a producer. Setting out with a vision so clear that it almost became a studio mantra, the resulting songs are concise, crisp and melodic, in essence creating at once their most complex and accessible record to date.

The Rocky Horror Picture Show Soundtrack

Back In Print On Red Vinyl

For the 1975 film version of The Rocky Horror Picture Show, American producer Lou Adler wisely mixed the best of the London and Los Angeles stage versions, shooting the movie in England with Tim Curry and several of the other original cast members, plus Meatloaf (years before Bat Out of Hell), and Americans Barry Bostwick and Susan Sarandon as the innocent couple Brad and Janet. Adler also brought back original London stage musicians in place of the slick studio musicians who had marred the L.A. cast album. The film version resequenced the songs and reassigned some of the vocals, with Brad's song Once in a While dropped. But it all worked out fine. The strings that were added to ballads like Science Fiction/Double Feature only improved them; the rockers rocked out; Bostwick and Sarandon proved to be the best Brad and Janet ever; the original cast members, especially Curry, reveled in the opportunity to immortalize their portrayals; and Rocky Horror's potential as a witty parody of cheap movies, rock & roll, and sexual mores was fully realized. The film soundtrack album became the definitive version of the score, despite lacking the songs Planet Shmanet Janet and The Sword of Damocles. The Rocky Horror Picture Show was not successful in its initial theatrical run, but then a strange thing happened. In 1976, the Waverly Theater in New York's Greenwich Village began showing the film at midnight on Fridays and Saturdays. Soon, a cult of repeat viewers began turning up every week; they began to dress like the characters, call out their own comments at strategic moments, sing along, and add their own theatrical effects. The phenomenon spread across the U.S., with fans rivaling Trekkies and Deadheads for loyalty and eccentricity, and The Rocky Horror Picture Show took on a life Richard O'Brien never could have anticipated.

A Challenge To The Cowards Of Christendom

Meet the most controversial garage band to storm the music scene in years! Combining a furious garage punk assault with an uncompromising and literal devotion to the Holy Bible, the Knights of the New Crusade are without a doubt the most divisive band in both the Christian music and punk rock circles.

It's quite understandable that you may feel dismayed, betrayed even, that we'd get mixed up with a band who delivers such an in-your-face spiritual message. But listen, dear friend, after much soul-searching- and flying objects around the office- we at Alternative Tentacles decided shunning the Knights would be reverse discrimination which would deny us, and you, the pleasure of the rockin' tuneage on this new record, their second full-length and AT debut! After all, the Knights of the New Crusade's stated objective is to take Christianity back from the powerful hypocrites who have hijacked it and to make Christian rock that actually rocks! Besides, we at Alternative Tentacles thrive on controversy, especially when it's as double-edged as the sword they wield on stage.

While the Christian scene debates their tactics (you should see the angry e-mails!), the secular underground dukes it out: are they... or aren't they? Their music is good enough that members of just about every Bay Area punk and garage band have been rumored to be among these self-styled musical and Spiritual warriors. Has Jello's taste for the extreme finally gone off the deep end? Or is this the most diabolical concept band since......a certain tall fellow's last concept bands? Either way, 'A Challenge to the Cowards of Christendom' is Good News, however you choose to interpret it!

    Rhythm And Stealth

    Import

    Remastered

After Leftfield's debut album Leftism, which was released in 1995, it took 4 years for the London-based producers duo to release the sequel.

Sounding completely different than the first album, Rhythm and Stealth was worth waiting for. It sounds more diverse and solid than its predecessor and contains exciting collaborations with Roots Manuva on the track Dusted and Hip Hop pioneer Afrika Bambaataa on the dance floor killer Afrika Shox, which was accompanied by a state-of-the-art and shocking video. Rhythm and Stealth is a great excursion into many different styles; it moves from funk to hip hop to techno to electro, to ambient and dub, but still sounds cohesive.

You might even recognize some of the tracks from the movies. Swords was featured in the 1999 movie Go and Afrika Shox can be heard in the box office success movie Vanilla Sky, starring Tom Cruise and Penelope Cruz.

    Blood On Ice

Bathory's famed lost album, Blood on Ice, was originally recorded in the late '80s, smack-dab in the middle of the Swedish group's revolutionary transition from its barbaric black metal beginnings to the ambitiously orchestrated Viking metal of its golden era. At the time, the work was deemed far too big a departure by band mastermind Quorthon, who, among other things, shockingly substituted his raspy croak for actual singing throughout -- but, as with any abandoned project, retrospective evidence also suggests that Quorthon was also less than secure about whether his songwriting and musicianship were yet developed enough to fulfill his vision. Shrouded in mystery for the ensuing half-decade, Blood on Ice was finally resurrected and completed (replete with story-advancing sound effects) to Bathory's satisfaction in 1996, at which time it was released to widely deserved critical and fan acclaim, despite a few but distinct shortcomings that placed its overall achievement slightly below that of acknowledged triumphs like Blood Fire Death and Hammerheart. Sliding into gear rather slowly with tentative offerings like the title track, One Eyed Old Man, and The Sword (which sounds way too similar to Manowar's Blood of My Enemies), the album eventually reaches cruising speed with outstanding moments like The Stallion, The Woodwoman, and the colossal Gods of Thunder of Wind and of Rain, whereupon Quorthon's vocals (sometimes given to off-pitch variations) sound better than ever before. The gentle acoustic bridge The Ravens sets up the epic, nine-minute masterstroke of The Revenge of the Blood on Ice, which may single-handedly convince even the most cynical of listeners that this long-forgotten work deservingly belongs within Bathory's hallowed canon. Also worth mentioning, the album's lengthy (meaning biblically sized) explanatory liner notes read like a veritable Rosetta Stone for longtime Bathory supporters, shedding unprecedented historical light and perspective upon the group's mysterious history.

    Dragon Mouth

Following their split 7" with LA's Aeges released last October, Dust Moth now releases their debut EP, Dragon Mouth. A dense, layered genre-defying statement in six distinct movements. The band is comprised of current & former members of such influential bands as These Arms Are Snakes, Minus The Bear, Undertow, Aeges, and XVIII Individual Eyes. Taking the sound hinted at on their debut single "Toto", the band has upped the ante for themselves across the board. The songs are deceptively heavy while simultaneously lush with atmosphere, as Irene Barbaric's haunting croon floats effortlessly above it all. The album spans the emotional spectrum with some moments feeling unbearably morose and others feeling utterly triumphant. Few debut EPs sound this confident, this direct, or this special. Dragon Mouth was produced, recorded, and mixed by Matt Bayles, who is also a full time member of the band (keys). His resume is no secret, and includes such legendary bands as Isis, Mastodon, Botch, Pearl Jam, Soundgarden, and many more. It was then sent off to be mastered by Chris Common (Palms, Pelican, The Sword). The album will be released on March 25th via The Mylene Sheath.

    Terrestrial Grief

It's apparent from the get-go: Omotai is a band that know what they want to accomplish and how to knock it out. Following two US tours and supporting slots for The Sword, Yob, Dark Castle, Thrones, Big Business and countless others, Omotai release their follow-up LP Terrestrial Grief.

The songs are brief, frenetic explosions of sound, a deft blend of grindcore, sludge, progressive noise-rock, math metal and whatever else happens to be blowing the band's skirt up at the time, all of it reaching your ears sopping with distortion and twisted to superior volume. Melissa Lonchambon Ryan's omnipresent bass rumble lines up with Sam Waters' relentless guitar riffery like a taloned fist to a shredded glove, while Anthony Vallejo's incomparable percussive bloodlust feels more like machine-gun-equipped battalions bent on sheer attrition. All three members share vocal duties seamlessly, razored shrieks punctuated by Ryan's wispy alto, the lyrics an outlandish cocktail of drunken nihilism and avant-garde sci-fi. A tough band to pigeonhole, granted, but definitely one worth seeking out.

    Blue Giant

Blue Giant is the creation of Kevin and Anita Robinson, better known as Portland indie-pop darlings Viva Voce. The Robinson's new band features Chris Funk (The Decemberists), Evan Railton (Swords) and Seth Lorinczi (The Golden Bears). On their self-titled debut, produced by Kevin, Blue Giant combine the traditional sounds of American music, country, bluegrass and folk, with driving, straight-ahead rock n roll. The 12 tracks on the album, all written by Kevin and Anita, showcase that versatility from the classic country feel of "Lonely Girl," to the melodic guitars in "Clean The Clock," to the mellow, deceptively simple "Gone For Good" which features Sleater-Kinney's Corin Tucker.

    Inji

Inji is the debut solo album by Sam Dust, AKA LA Priest. Across its ten audaciously
imaginative tracks Inji reasserts Dust as a truly idiosyncratic voice in British music, applying
the same frantically eclectic, mischievous and wilfully absurd spirit of his previous band,
the beloved Late of the Pier, to ever more nuanced and affecting songwriting and
    composition.

From the obscene space-age stadium rock guitar solo of 'Oino', the maddeningly catchy
digi-dub single that Dust leaked sample-by-sample on a suitably enigmatic website at the
turn of the year, to 'Learning To Love', the record's gargantuan, eight minute long proghouse
centrepiece and 'Occasion', a melting martian Prince come-on, Inji confounds and
delights in equal measure and at every turn.

'Lady's In Trouble With The Law' boasts a lithe, sensual soul chorus about getting arrested
that feels at once haunted and horny whilst the insectoid instrumental ambience of 'Lorry
Park', twists and turns and burrows into the brain as creepily as the most classic Aphex
Twin material. Elsewhere, 'Fabby', another instrumental, juxtaposes a gorgeous, cascading
piano figure that'd make Benjamin Britten proud with percussion that sounds like the
clashing of two swords and album closer, the bubbling, aquamarine ballad 'Mountain' finds
Dust contorting his voice into an impossibly high, androgynous falsetto.

Throughout all the songs there's a reliance on feeling and intimation as opposed to any one
lyrical theme, and although the notion of love, its joys and trials, heaviness and absurdity,
can often be glimpsed, it's in a non-linear way that recalls the disruptive, deliberately
misleading pop of artists such as David Sylvian, Arthur Russell and David Byrne.

Just like its genesis story, Inji is a record that poses as many questions as answers. It has
its own logic, in its own time zone, and for the duration of its forty four minutes the listener
shares in this too. If it doesn't conform it's because it's not supposed to.

    Demons And Wizards

Reissue of the classic 4th album from Uriah Heep. Originally released in 1972, the album reached #23 on the US Album Charts and is certified GOLD by the RIAA. Includes the classic singles "The Wizard" & "Easy Livin

Magic spells, time-traveling futurists, sword-bearing horse riders, mountain-residing sorcerers, possessed journeyman, ominous warnings: Demons and Wizards lives up to its name as a collection of fantasy-based narratives rooted in dreamy, gothic-minded arrangements.

Universally recognized as the finest effort of Uriah Heep's four-decade-plus career, the 1972 LP perseveres as a prog-rock landmark that influenced countless of bands ranging from Metallica to Styx to Blind Guardian. The first album on which founding members Mick Box, Ken Hensley, and David Byron are joined by staple drummer Lee Kerslake, the Top 30-charting Demons and Wizards captivates and charms by way of taut songwriting and instrumental execution.

Rather than function as the primary attraction, and be susceptible to mockery, make-believe lyrical themes augment a formidable assembly of folk-derived melodies, sharp medleys, and powerful hooks. Acoustic guitars weave webs of finite textures through which crackling, church-like organ passages and space-conscious bass lines maneuver, allowing songs to come across with an ethereal and powerful feel.

Glowing with old-fashioned tube-amp warmth, concise fare like "The Wizard," "Traveler In Time," and the hit "Easy Livin'" touches upon punchy garage-rock basics while epics such as "Circle of Hands" and closing "Paradise/The Spell"-a multi-part sonic excursion whose choral grace and spiritual glide evoke distant lands, misty cloud forests, and peaceful eternities-cling to a complex sensitivity underscored by deft piano notes. It's no wonder Uriah Heep would spend its lifespan trying to again capture such balance.

    II: Void Worship

Wizards and warriors, rejoice, for the chosen one has returned! The Misery Wizard lives!

Since the early 2012 unveiling of their debut sonic behemoth MISERY WIZARD, fans and critics alike have patiently yet anxiously awaited the second chapter in the ongoing legacy of the almighty PILGRIM, a three-piece doom metal band from Rhode Island, USA.

Their first release shook the doom metal underground to its core, making a loud, in your face effort to bring doom metal back to its most minimalist and archaic roots, restoring it to its former glory. Their critical success, paired with their controversial interviews and emotionally draining live performances have lead PILGRIM to excellence, traversing the globe performing sold-out shows in multiple countries and playing festivals alongside some of the biggest names in their genre. Two years later, the fabled outfit has returned with a brand new record, the highly anticipated next installment of their aural adventure PILGRIM II: VOID WORSHIP.

PILGRIM returns more powerful than ever, wielding eight new epic tracks laden with tales of sword and sorcery, death, doom and destruction. Recorded at Moonlight Mile Recording by audio mastermind Mike Moebius, II: VOID WORSHIP delivers an absolutely unrivaled quality of tone and heaviness that many critics felt their original effort MISERY WIZARD had lacked. The band takes a new approach to their song writing, replacing meditated, repetitive hypnosis-inducing dirges with more calculated and demented powerhouse riffs. They build, shape, and climb into frenzied climaxes and fade into sweet sonic releases, molding perfectly crafted rock songs into twisting spires of evil doom metal masterpieces. It is obvious that PILGRIM has matured, both musically and as individuals, in their past two years of global conquest.

    Desperate Ground

    180 Gram Vinyl LP

    Vinyl LP pressed at RTI

Desperate Ground, the new LP from The Thermals, is exactly what the title implies. A
dangerous path. A crucial moment. A split second in time when you must stand and defend,
kill or be killed. Nowhere to run. Nowhere to hide.
    No problem!

The Thermals' sixth LP and first for Saddle Creek, Desperate Ground, is a true scrappy and
scratchy return-to-form for The Thermals, with all the raw power and unhinged adolescent
energy that made their early LP's so insanely enjoyable. Lyrically, the album is a brash and
irresponsible ode to human violence, a black celebration of the inevitability of war and death.

A dark and yet joyous affair, Desperate Ground tells the (murky) tale of a lone rogue in the
night. One man, one path, one sword. An unceasing urge to destroy. A never-ending battle
against the forces of nature.  A destiny impossible to avoid. All told, Desperate Ground is a
loud, violent thrill ride, a punk LP as bloody action film. It's The Wipers meets "Die Hard" and
    "Excalibur".

Desperate Ground was produced by John Agnello (Dinosaur Jr, Sonic Youth) in Hoboken,
NJ. Agnello and The Thermals completed mixing just hours before Hurricane Sandy ravaged
    New Jersey. Desperate Ground indeed.
