Who Will Cut Our Hair When We're Gone?

WWCOHWWG? was the third and final full-length album by the Canadian indie rock act The Unicorns, and was originally released in 2003. The album gained wide and immediate praise, with broad critical and commercial acclaim from outlets as diverse at NME, Pitchfork and The Village Voice. This cult affection is probably best summarized in the album's involvement as the premise for the CBS sitcom How I Met Your Mother? i.e., the basis for the lead character falling in love with said "mother" being their mutual love of the obscure Who Will Cut Our Hair ? The Unicorns disbanded shortly after the release of WWCOHWWG?, with founding member Nick Thorborn going on to create the band Islands, and perform in various projects.

    La Lechuza

Includes CD + Limited Edition Poster

Co-founded ten years ago by percussionist Bruce Cawdron (Godspeed You! Black Emperor) and cellist Rebecca Foon (Thee Silver Mt. Zion), Esmerine enters its second decade with the new album, La Lechuza and an expanded line-up which includes harp-player Sarah Page and multi-instrumentalist Andrew Barr.

La Lechuza documents the evolution of Esmerine under the influence of this expanded membership, and is dedicated to beloved and internationally-renowned Montreal-based singer Lhasa de Sela, who died on New Year's Day 2010 at the age of 37. The album includes the posthumous track Fish On Land, an alternate version of the song that she recorded with Emserine and on which she sings.

While primarily tracked in Patrick Watson's loft in Montreal, La Lechuza was mixed by Mark Lawson (Arcade Fire, The Unicorns, Islands) with the exception of three tracks. La Lechuza also features guest appearances by Sarah Neufeld (Arcade Fire) and Colin Stetson.

    Junto

JUNTO-due out via Atlantic Jaxx/PIAS America--marks pioneering U.K. electronic music duo BASEMENT JAXX's seventh studio album.

Globally revered as innovators and leading lights of their genre, BASEMENT JAXX blew the lid off the dance music scene of the late 90's with their ground breaking albums Remedy, Rooty and Kish Kash. Having firmly established their place in the pantheon of dance music greats, the duo of Felix Buxton and Simon Ratcliffe are back with JUNTO, a genre-hopping musical roller-coaster that showcases the band's legendary inventiveness, irresistible songwriting and production smarts.

In May, the pair debuted the club-ready, jacking Unicorn, the first track to be taken from Junto. It has met with universal praise, working as a perfect taster of what the full length has to offer. They soon followed with Mermaid Of Salinas, a samba sensation just in time for the World Cub festivities. Then came Never Say Never, the first official single from the album, currently sitting at #4 on Billboard's Club Play chart and racing up Billboard's Dance Radio chart.

Spanish for 'together,' the concept behind JUNTO is one of unity and soulfulness, fusing dance music's sub-genres into one cohesive multi-flavored confection. It's a bold, boisterous, brilliant album full of amazing guest vocal performances, richly layered production and the irresistible sense of groove that has set them apart from the very beginning. Summer is here, and the JAXX are back.

    Vapours

Nick Diamonds' polymorphous pop band, Islands, is back with their third studio album, Vapours: a collection of fun, highly listenable tunes that effortlessly intertwine Motown grooves, electro-Krautrock anolog synths, and even some slinky horn charts. All this over Nick Diamonds' undeniable melodies, giving us the one of the best collections of modern pop songs since David Byrne rolled out the big suits. After making a splash with their 2006 debut, Return to the Sea, performed with a cast of characters from Montreal's thriving music scene (including members of Arcade Fire and Wolf Parade), ex-Unicorns Nick Diamonds and Jaime Thompson parted ways for 2007's Arm's Way. Longtime fans will be ecstatic to learn that Thompson has returned for Vapours, and the band has regained much of the ragged charm that made Return to the Sea a press and fan favorite.

Fourth Album From Modern Contemporary / Instrumental Rock Ensemble Led By Percussionist Bruce Cawdron (Godspeed You! Black Emperor) & Cellest Rebecca Food (Silver Mr Zion, Saltland, Set Fire To Flames)

Partly Recorded In Istanbul With Four Turkish Guest Players

Mixed By Jace Lasek (The Besbard Lakes, Wolf Parade, Suuns)

When Esmerine surfaced with La Lechuza in 2011, the album signaled many things: the band's first new recordings in six years, an expanded line-up, and a song cycle inspired by and dedicated to the life and untimely death of a dear friend and fellow musician. What wasn't immediately clear was whether this acclaimed record would mark the opening of a new chapter for the band, or stand alone as a singular work of eulogy and homage driven by emotion and circumstance.

Esmerine's new album Dalmak emphatically confirms that the group has indeed continued writing, exploring and collaborating - definitively extending its horizons in this new iteration of the band's trajectory. Bruce Cawdron (marimba) resigned from his seat as drummer for Godspeed You! Black Emperor in 2012, allowing him to focus more fully on Esmerine alongside co-founder and cellist Rebecca Foon (Silver Mt. Zion, Set Fire To Flames); the two
principals also recruited percussionist Jamie Thompson (Unicorns, Islands) and multi-instrumentalist Brian Sanderson as full-time members to solidify the group as a writing and performing quartet.

European tours in 2011-2012 brought Esmerine to Istanbul, where the group's enthusiastic reception led to an invitation for an artist residency in the city. Dalmak is the fruit of that visit: the majority of the album was recorded in Istanbul, where compositions by the band's four Canadian musicians were augmented by a number of Turkish guest players.

Dalmak is a Turkish verb with many connotations: to be absorbed in, to dive into, to bathe in, to contemplate, to plummet. As a title for Esmerine's new album, "dalmak refers in a literal sense to immersion in the culture and music of Istanbul but also appropriately evokes the range of music that emerged from this immersion: a collection of songs that shift between meditative pulsing and enveloping restraint to headlong flights into rhythm and groove. With Dalmak, Esmerine presents some of its most richly minimal and intimate music alongside what is surely its most explosive, energized and ornate. The album is a tour-de-force of cross-cultural music-making, emotive but unsentimental,
deeply textured and detailed but never precious or pedantic, superbly guided throughout by a balance of DIY rock, new folk and modern classical/contemporary sensibilities.

With initial recording by Barkin Engin and Metin Bozkurt in Istanbul, Esmerine laid down the
live bed tracks for the up-tempo rhythmic songs at the album's core: Lost River Blues, Barn Board Fire and Translator's Clos. Marimba, cello, drums, tenor banjo, bass and trumpet are joined by bendir, darbuka, erbane, meh, barama, saz and electric guitar from local players for these centerpiece tracks, where extended melodic themes and short solos are passed around and woven through staccato grooves and polyrhythmic vamps in deeply
satisfying fashion. The sessions continued back in MontrÉal at Breakglass, where Cawdron and Foon tracked the more studied cello and marimba songs Learning To Crawl and White Pine, and where the album's gorgeously saturated warmth, depth and propulsive grit was achieved courtesy of Breakglass head engineer Jace Lasek (The Besnard Lakes,
Wolf Parade, Suuns) and Ian Ilavsky, who mixed the album alongside Rebecca and Bruce.

We're thrilled to present this new album from Esmerine and to document the continued evolution of Bruce Cawdron and Rebecca Foon, two musicians with whom Constellation has enjoyed a decade-long relationship spanning multiple projects. Dalmak is a distinct and exciting highlight in their diverse and adventurous discographies.

New Project Led By Montreal Cellist Rebecca Foon

(ESMERINE, SILVER MT ZION, SET FIRE TO FLAMES)

    • Features Jamie Thompson (UNICORNS) and Guest Players from LITTLE SCREAM, PATRICK WATSON BAND
    and BELL ORCHESTRE

    • Recorded and Mixed by Grammy-Winning Engineer
    Mark Lawson (ARCADE FIRE)

Saltland is the new project led by Montreal-based cellist Rebecca Foon, best
known as a founding member of contemporary chamber group Esmerine and a former
member of Thee Silver Mt. Zion and Set Fire To Flames. Foon began composing solo
work in 2010, featuring multi-layered cello and hushed vocals at the intersection of
drone, no-wave, improv, dream-pop and minimalism. Joined by Jamie Thompson
(Unicorns, Esmerine) on miniature percussion, programming and signal processing,
Foon's live performances in Montreal and abroad over the past two years have seen
her sound progress towards gently rhythmic and electronic territory as well. She has
transfixed audiences with this new music while sharing the stage with Mary Margaret
O'Hara, Julia Kent, Nat Baldwin and Sam Amidon, among others. As her largely homerecorded debut album began taking shape throughout 2011, with numerous guests
contributing to various pieces, Foon adopted the Saltland moniker for this work.

I Thought It Was Us But It Was All Of Us is a beautifully restrained debut
album that telescopes the directness and economy of Foon's compositional and vocal
styles into lush, twilight atmospheres aglow with luminescent tendrils and flickering
particles. Foon sings of childhood innocence lost, of tender utopic reveries and
downcast dystopic horizons, and the search for soft, stoic strength in a darkening,
devolving world. Foon's voice is discreet but defined, drifting on buoyant currents of
sound sourced from her plucked and bowed cello lines, in most cases propelled by
Thompson's bespoke percussion and understated programming/processing, with
touches of guitar, bass, horns, woodwinds, strings and backing vocals added by a cast
of supporting players. The record unfurls like a gauzy flag in a restless breeze at dusk:
a delicate, resolute sentinel set against the fading light.

The album's ambience also owes much to the work of Mark Lawson, the awardwinning engineer (Arcade Fire) who collaborated closely with Foon to record and mix
these songs at Six Saint V, her apartment studio in Montreal. Lawson, along with
friend and percussionist Thompson, helped to forge a balance between lo-fi intimacy
and shimmering breadth with these recordings, remaining faithful to the all-anologue
instrumentation of the source material while judiciously deploying signal processing
strategies to subtly refract, saturate and expand the sonic landscape. With
contributions from Laurel Sprengelmeyer and Jess Robertson (Little Scream), Mishka
Stein (Patrick Watson), Colin Stetson (Bon Iver), Sarah Neufeld and Richard Reed Parry
(Arcade Fire) among others, Saltland offers up an unassumingly immersive debut
album of searching songs that blend several core influences into a distinctively
naturalistic sound. Saltland stakes out an unaffected, meditative, clear-eyed and
earnest space where minimalism, dream-pop, drone, shoegaze, confessional folk,
modern chamber and ambient/electronic coexist and coalesce.
