    Canned Heat (MONO)

Of all the American rock bands that embraced the blues in the 1960s, none took their musical mission more seriously than Canned Heat. The California quintet, led by vocalists Alan Blind Owl Wilson and Bob The Bear Hite and featuring the brilliant guitarist Henry Vestine, combined fiery instrumental chops with a vast knowledge of blues history. Canned Heat quickly carved out a unique niche in that heady era, making high-profile appearances at Woodstock and other notable rock festivals, and managing to break into the pop singles charts without diluting their sound.

Canned Heat's eponymous 1967 debut LP, released shortly after their attention-getting performance at the Monterey International Pop Music Festival, introduced the band's audacious synthesis of blues tradition and electrified boogie. The 11-song album features raw, fiercely soulful interpretations of material by such blues masters as Howlin' Wolf, Elmore James, Robert Johnson, Muddy Waters and Sonny Boy Williamson, powered by Wilson and Hite's contrasting vocal styles and Vestine's explosive fretwork. The result is one of the most distinctive and dynamic blues-rock recordings of the '60s, and the album that launched Canned Heat's five-decade musical journey.

This new vinyl edition of this landmark debut effort has been sourced from the original mono masters and pressed on 180-gram vinyl, and features a meticulous reproduction of the LP's original cover art.

    Measures Of Joy

"Virginia Wing's neo-psych dreamscapes are delicate, yet delectable." - DIY MAG

Measures Of Joy is the debut album from South London based group Virginia Wing. The album is a work of psychedelic majesty that avoids the rockist trappings that many contemporary bands fall into; speaking to everyday anxiety and isolation and in contrast, seeking to evoke an inner world of pastoral fortification.

The startlingly realised collection draws influence from the radiophonic sounds of Broadcast, the kosmische wonder of Cluster and the rhythmic propulsion of This Heat whilst never directly emulating any particular style.

Building on the experimentations found on their 7 on Critical Heights and a 12 EP on Faux Discx, Measures Of Joy encompasses spoken-word passages, brooding electronics and musique concrete influences to create songs that are at once immediate and truly strange.

From the metronomic pulse of World Contact and the avant-pop of Marnie to the sonic experimentation of Gold Thread, Measures Of Joy is a record that consistently surprises and ensnares; a collection of hallucinogenic pop-songs played with a sense of urgency and an experimental verve.

Virginia Wing is Alice Merida Richards, Sam Pillay and Sebastian Truskolaski. The album was recorded at Holy Mountain Studios by Misha Hering.

Born in Eufaula, Alabama, in 1941, the 3rd of 11 children, Martha Reeves moved with her family to the Motor City - Detroit, Michigan - when she was less than a year old. Like so many other R&B and soul singers of the era, she was raised on gospel and started singing in the church, but before long the secular interests of doo-wop and R&B won out and by the age of 18 she had joined her first vocal group, The Fascinations. In 1960 she joined the group that would eventually become Martha & The Vandellas (named after Martha's childhood street, Van Dyke, and her singing idol, Della Reese). After filling in on backup vocals for Marvin Gaye's classic "Stubborn Kind Of Fellow", the group signed their own recording contract with Motown's Gordy label. By the following year, they were having massive chart success with this album's title track, "Heat Wave", and "Quicksand" (both of which were written by the new songwriting trio of Holland-Dozier-Holland). Compiling many of those early hit singles in 1963, Heat Wave is a quintessential piece of the Motown Sound that every record collection needs.

    Heat Leisure III & IV

Heat Leisure is a collective centered around the Carney brothers of Pontiak, Greg Fox and Alexandra Drewchin of Guardian Alien, Steve Strohmeier of Beach House, and Robert J. Otten III. Their music takes a freewheeling approach to psychedelia with obvious nods to Amon DÜÜl II, Can and the Grateful Dead. For this, their second gathering and recording at the Carney s farm in Virginia, the group recruited the legendary Merry Prankster and Grateful Dead associate Ken Babbs, who emceed the Dead s mythical Veneta, OR gig in 1972 that became Sunshine Daydream, to contribute a shamanistic monologue to III, which occupies the first side of this, their first full-length vinyl release. The Carneys approached Babbs about collaborating with Heat Leisure t his Oregon farm on the last Pontiak tour. Heat Leisure s core principles are spontaneity, serendipity, and collaboration. The band employs frying amp distortion, a signature of Pontiak, as well as an array of drums, synthesizers, samplers, organs and a heavy dose of explorative improvisation by the musicians to create a highly lyrical album. Heat Leisure was conceived as a multi-media pursuit. While this release, III & IV, is an audio record, Heat Leisure I & II was released in the form of a short film/DVD with an accompanying 7 . The Carneys have said that future incarnations could take any form from performance and paintings, to sculptures or even digital mediums. Very much like the collaborative approach of the musicians to each session, they are keeping it open. III & IV was recorded late at night during a three day period during the first week of 2014 in Pontiak s Studio A, also on their farm, with Lain Carney doing most of the engineering. The session was recorded live to 1 tape, the reel old and decaying, which lead the tape to subtly speed up and slow down as the tape broke down and left residue on the tape heads. This organic effect adds to the woozy, surreal vibe of the music, and could not be replicated in a digital recording.

    About Pure Pleasure

At the beginning of the 90s, in the early days of audiophile vinyl re-releases, the situation was fairly straightforward. Companies such as DCC, Mobile Fidelity, Classic Records and, of course, Pure Pleasure all maintained a mutual, unwritten ethical code: we would only use analogue tapes to manufacture records.

During the course of the present vinyl hype, many others have jumped on the bandwagon in the hope of securing a corner of the market. Very often they are not so ethical and use every imaginable source to master from: CDs, LPs, digital files, MP3s - or employed existent tools from the 80s and 90s for manufacturing.

A digital delay is gladly used when cutting a lacquer disc because tape machines with an analogue delay have become quite rare and are therefore expensive. When cutting the lacquer, the audio signal is delayed by one LP revolution against the signal, which controls the cutter head, and for this a digital delay is very often employed. Of course, the resultant sound signal is completely digital and thus only as good as this delay.

We should like to emphasize that Pure Pleasure Records on principle only uses the original master tape as the basis for the entirely analogue cutting of lacquer discs. In addition, the pressing tool is newly manufactured as a matter of principle.

We only employ existing tools for manufacturing if an improved result is not forthcoming, e.g. the title Elvis Is Back, which was mastered by Steve Hoffman and Kevin Gray, or several titles from our Philips Classics series, which in any case Willem Makkee cut from the original masters at the Emil Berliner Studios in the 90s. It goes without saying that we only used the mother and that new tools were made for our production.

To put it in a nutshell: we can ensure you that our releases are free from any kind of digital effects and that the lacquer discs are newly cut.

Hooker 'N Heat (Pure Pleasure) (Awaiting Repress)

When this two-LP set was initially released in January 1971, Canned Heat was back to its R&B roots. Sporting a slightly revised personnel with the return of Henry 'Sunflower' Vestine and the incorporation of Antonio 'Tony' de la Barreda on bass, a highly skilled constituent of Aldolfo de la Parra on drums. Sadly, it would also be the final effort to include co-founder Alan 'Blind Owl' Wilson, who passed away in September 1970. Hooker 'n Heat (1971) is a low-key affair split between unaccompanied solo John Lee Hooker tunes, collaborations between Hooker and Wilson, as well as five full-blown confabs between Hooker and Heat.

The full-fledged collaborations shine as both parties unleash some of their finest respective work. While Canned Heat get top bill - probably as it was the group's record company that sprung for Hooker 'n Heat - make no mistake, as Hooker steers the combo with the same gritty and percussive guitar leads that have become his trademark. The epic Boogie Chillen No. 2 stretches over 11-and-a-half minutes and is full of the same swagger as the original, with the support of Canned Heat igniting the verses and simmering on the subsequent instrumental breaks with all killer and no filler.

    • Alan Wilson (piano, harmonica)

The High Heat Licks Against Heaven

Founded by MAYHEM guitarist Teloch, the enigmatic NIDINGR return with their third and deadliest album to date! The band's new album 'The High Heat Licks Against Heaven' is 10 tracks of scathing, caustic metal that showcases the band at the height of their powers. Sharp riffs twist and turn as they collide with explosive drumming, while vitriolic screams are unleashed from the depths of hell. Ambitious tracks such as "Surtr", "Sol Taker", "Heimdalargaldr", "On Dead Body Shore", and more, champion NIDINGR as the leaders of forward-thinking extreme music. 'The High Heat Licks Against Heaven' is total death worship, and sets a new bar for extreme aural domination.

The Heat Is On (Speakers Corner)

A glance at the discs, which rocked through the charts under the simple name of "Isley Brothers" will give you an idea of how a long-lasting and self-generative family enterprise (The Times) became a true soul factory. After a brisk start with popular rock'n'roll music, similar to that which a large number of black vocal groups turned out in the Fifties, followed a long march from one record company to another - all of whom were hard pushed to equate the dynamic musicality of these brothers with the 'own sound' of their productions. After hopping from one record label to the next, and not even getting a long-lasting break with the potent Motown label Tamla, golden days arrived when they set up their own label - T-Neck.

Amidst the turmoil created by strong competition from superb studio albums, the Isleys landed a smash hit in 1975 with The Heat Is On, an album which achieved double platinum status with its collection of perfectly written numbers. Powerful, funky volleys (Fight The Power), gyrating riffs as a launch pad for harmonious vocals and a creative solo (The Heat Is On) go their own way, which is also apparent in the bell-like, airy ballads that swing along tastefully - quite without the sugar-sweet strings so popular at that time.

This Speakers Corner LP was remastered using pure analogue components only, from the master tapes through to the cutting head. All royalties and mechanical rights have been paid.

The songs which comprise Heat Lightning Rumbles in the Distance were originally conceived as part of a novel written by Patterson Hood on the road while touring with the Drive-By Truckers. While the book eventually fell by the wayside, the songs kept coming.

Featuring 12-new compositions from one of America's most talented songwriters and storytellers, the album is co-produced by Hood and longtime colloborator David Barbe. The album features appearances from quest vocalist Kelly Hogan, members of Drive-By Truckers, Centro-matic, and Patterson's father, the legendary Muscle Shoals bass player David Hood. 180g vinyl pressing with CD.

Buzz Or Howl Under The Influence Of Heat

What Makes a Man Start Fires? marked a real step forward for the Minutemen, and while Double Nickels on the Dime was where the group would reach their peak, there were plenty of signs pointing to that album's diverse brilliance on this eight-song EP. While 'Dreams Are Free, Motherfucker!' and 'The Toe Jam' are goofy, noisy throwaways (hey, this was a EP sandwiched between albums), the rest of the songs found the band consolidating their strengths and growing even tighter and more confident. 'I Felt Like a Gringo' and 'Cut' merge funky rhythms with a punk rocker's sense of concision, 'Self Referenced' and 'The Product' reveal how far this band's writing had progressed since The Punch Line, and 'Little Man With a Gun in His Hand' showed the Minutemen could reduce the tempo and the volume and still create stunning music. It's hard to think of a stronger rhythm section in an independent band in the 1980s than Mike Watt and George Hurley, and D. Boon was by any standards a superb guitarist, with smarts, style, and a keen sense of how to edit himself. Buzz or Howl Under the Influence of Heat remains a superb record from a band just edging into greatness. - All Music Guide

    Women

Women's self-titled debut touches upon Velvet Underground, Swell Maps and This Heat while not really having any obvious precursors. A lo-fi masterpiece cloaked in layers of vibrato and guitar wash. Women effortlessly mix noise, static and infectious hooks that manage to lean towards progressive psychedelia without pretense. The band is made up of Patrick Flegel, Matthew Flegel, Michael Wallace and Christopher Reimer and they reside in Calgary, Canada.

    Rev (Awaiting Repress)

2014 release, the 11th studio album from the Reverend Horton Heat and their first in four years. Rev finds the Dallas-based trio returning to their Psychobilly/Rockabilly roots after a short detour through Roots/Alt-Country territory. Listening to the Reverend Horton Heat is tantamount to injecting pure musical nitrous into the hot-rod engine of your heart. The Reverend's commandants are simple. Rock hard, drive fast, and live true. And no band on this, or any other, planet rocks harder, drives faster, or lives truer than the Reverend Horton Heat. These 'itinerant preachers' actually practice what they preach. They live their lives by the Gospel of Rock 'n' Roll.

    Thistled Spring

Horse Feathers third album, second on Kill Rock Stars,Thistled Springdisplays a rich progression more textured and lush than the band's previous two albums, it also captures the skillful interplay of the band's current touring lineup of Justin Ringle (on vocals & Guitar), violinist Nathan Crockett, cellist Catherine Odell, and multi-instrumentalist Sam Cooper. Lyrically Ringle continues to explore broken relationships, longing, and pain, but this album has an undercurrent of heat that translates to a thawing of frozen hearts, and music which rushes like spring torrents, all of which points to a resurgence of life after a hard winter.

"Whole generations of basement-tape shenanigans are baked into their lurching, overdriven sound, alternatingly stripped-down and blown-out" - SPIN

Take the 101 north out of Los Angeles, and you'll pass by Agoura Hills, where the core duo of
the band Dub Thompson grew up. Whatever you see in that town won't readily prepare you for
the music they wrote while there, but you're free to look.

"Most everyone who's in a group who's our age lives on the Internet," says guitarist Matt Pulos.
"The kinds of thingsthat have shaped our band aren't anchored to any one time or place."

Pulos and his bandmate, drummer Evan Laffer, are currently both 19 years old, and are putting
that line of thought to the test; their musical influences travel from the Midwestern malaise of
Big Black and Pere Ubu, to Kraut pioneers Can and Kraftwerk, while bowing to the British
belligerence of The Fall and This Heat.

Recording the album while living with Foxygen's Jonathan Rado at his rented house in
Bloomington, the band had its first taste of a heavy Indiana summer, and all the humidity and
insect life that buzzes along with it. "We woke up every day, ate hard-boiled eggs and stood on
a porch," says Pulos of the experience.

Their first collection of songs slyly unties the shoes of genre and convention, shape shifts
mischievously, and tramples on the promises delivered on the name itself.
There are only eight songs on this rangy debut.

Intense blasts of hook-filled noise rock ("Hayward!"), rock steady marionette stomp ("No
Time"), hypnotic bouts of doomy poetics ("Epicondyles"), outlandishly sexy groove rock
("Dograces"), and a number of other bite-sized forays into parts unknown are made manifest
    across 9 Songs.

The vibes are strong here. Pulos sings and plays like he's working out long-standing grudges,
pulling the most sinewy tones from an acoustic guitar and ripping huge chunks of demon flesh
out of his electric. Laffer matches him step for step on the drums, an exacting presence behind
the kit who pushes even the band's more placid moments into bouts of tension. Together they
succeed in animating their musical ideas to startling, almost unnatural life. Reverb units,
keyboards, samples and processing gluing everything together, saturated in the August heat and
worn in until they sound second nature, it's like somehow you've been listening to these songs
    forever.
