    Staatskapelle Dresden (Discontinued)

This double album is an homage to the Staatskapelle as intended and commissioned by the Thorens company. The Swiss record manufacturer cannot rival the orchestra's 460 years, but at 125 years of age it holds the record as the oldest company of the entertainment industry still in existence. These LPs are meant as a double birthday gift: to ourselves, but above all to our many friends around the world. For friends of Staatskapelle, friends of Thorens and above all, for lovers of good-quality music reproduction. - Heinz Rohrer, Managing Director CEO Thorens Export Company Ltd.

Mendelssohn - Midsummer Night's Dream (Speakers Corner) (Awaiting Repress)

Felix Mendelssohn composed the concert overture to A Midsummer Night's Dream in 1826 while the remaining incidental music, composed for a performance of Shakespeare's famous play, was written many years later. His well known Wedding March and the other important numbers of A Midsummer Night's Dream are included in this sought-after DECCA recording.

This composition is Mendelssohn's most important stage works and a great favourite, which explains why it is so frequently performed (especially the overture) and recorded.
World-class musicians like the soloists Jennifer Vyvyan, Marion Lowe and the London Symphony Orchestra, conducted by Peter Maag, and supported by the Women's Chorus of the Royal Opera House, Covent Garden, give a masterly performance of this delightful work which offers an insight into Mendelssohn's early and late compositional styles.
The quality of the performance leaves nothing to be desired and the listener is carried away to a world of dreams, not only during a summer night.

    Musicians:

    • Soloists, London Symphony Orchestra and Chorus

    • Peter Maag (conductor)

Recording: February 1957 at Kingsway Hall, London by Cyril Windebank

    Production: James Walker

    About Speakers Corner

At the beginning of the 90s, in the early days of audiophile vinyl re-releases, the situation was fairly straightforward. Companies such as DCC, Mobile Fidelity, Classic Records and, of course, Speakers Corner all maintained a mutual, unwritten ethical code: we would only use analogue tapes to manufacture records.

During the course of the present vinyl hype, many others have jumped on the bandwagon in the hope of securing a corner of the market. Very often they are not so ethical and use every imaginable source to master from: CDs, LPs, digital files, MP3s - or employed existant tools from the 80s and 90s for manufacturing.

A digital delay is gladly used when cutting a lacquer disc because tape machines with an analogue delay have become quite rare and are therefore expensive. When cutting the lacquer, the audio signal is delayed by one LP revolution against the signal, which controls the cutter head, and for this a digital delay is very often employed. Of course, the resultant sound signal is completely digital and thus only as good as this delay.

We should like to emphasise that Speakers Corner Records on principle only uses the original master tape as the basis for the entirely analogue cutting of lacquer discs. In addition, the pressing tool is newly manufactured as a matter of principle. We have one digital recording in our catalogue (Alan Parsons / Eye In The Sky"), but even in this particular case we used the analogue tapes for cutting.

We only employ existing tools for manufacturing if an improved result is not forthcoming, e.g. the title Elvis Is Back, which was mastered by Steve Hoffman and Kevin Gray, or several titles from our Philips Classics series, which in any case Willem Makkee cut from the original masters at the Emil Berliner Studios in the 90s. It goes without saying that we only used the mother and that new tools were made for our production.

To put it in a nutshell: we can ensure you that our releases are free from any kind of digital effects - excluding the exception above - and that the lacquer discs are newly cut.

    I Didn't Know I Was Singing

The Sursiks, the masters of musical reverse-engineering, have taken 16 phone messages from the answering machines of family members and friends and set them to music, largely unaltered. The messages are not simply slapped on top of pre-existing music for the sake of novelty, but they are the melodic material from which the rest of the music is born. The result is a truly brilliant, hilarious and mind-altering concept album. The musicians include 3 members of legendary American ska band Gangster Fun and the musical style and instrumentation varies throughout, making for an interesting listen.

    Misterioso

1958's Misterioso was culled from the same 1958 Five Spot Cafe performances that produced Thelonious In Action and features the same quartet of Monk (piano), Johnny Griffin (tenor sax), Roy Haynes (drums) and Ahmed Abdul-Malik (bass). The swinging 6-song set consists of of all Monk arranged originals, with the exception being Just a Gigalo, which he performs unaccompanied here. Griffin proves to be the perfect foil for Monk's unorthodox genius throughout, particularly on the 10-minute plus title track treasure and the multi-layered Let's Cool One.

    Where I've Been

"I think this is the best work we've ever done," explains JD & The Straight Shot founder and frontman Jim Dolan of the band's latest release, Where I've Been. "I'm so proud of the music that my band and I have put together. I believe in this album."

Produced by Joe Walsh, Where I've Been features several breakthrough singles including "Governor's Song," which challenges some of today's most well-known political figures; "Under That Hood," a transformative single that tells the tragic story of Trayvon Martin; and "Hard to Find," which will be featured in the highly-anticipated film, St. Vincent, starring Bill Murray and Melissa McCarthy.

Dolan's day gig is Cablevision Systems CEO and Executive Chairman of Madison Square Garden, where he also oversees New York sports teams such as the Knicks and the Rangers. Music is his passion.

"I needed something in my life where I felt like I was actually creating," says Dolan. "Most of what I do as an executive is orchestrate. I don't actually set up cable and I don't really shoot hoops," he says, laughing. "Music is something I've played since I was a kid. It's me purely expressing myself."

JD & The Straight Shot's creative nucleus is Dolan and guitarist Marc Copely (B.B. King), who pen all the band's music and lyrics. Instrumentally indispensable is guitarist Aidan Dolan; keyboardist Brian Mitchell (Bob Dylan, Levon Helm); and drummer Joe Magistro (The Black Crowes). Also part of the band are some of pop music's finest session players, bassist Zev Katz (Aretha Franklin, Elton John), and violinist Erin Slaver (Rod Stewart, Trace Adkins, Martina McBride).

Dolan started JD & The Straight Shot in 2000. The band has recorded four previous albums: Midnight Run (2012), Can't Make Tears (2011), Right On Time (2008), and Nothing To Hide (2005) - as well as an EP, Daily News Blues (2010).

The band's style is steeped in the quiet fire of Americana, with distinctive elements of the blues and mystical, rustic, New Orleans-flavored roots music - topped off with a dash of the classic rock of Dolan's youth.

"I grew up on bands like the Allman Brothers," says Dolan. "We played those records until the grooves wore right off of them."

JD & The Straight Shot has been covered by The New York Times, Billboard, and New York Magazine, among other publications, and performed on "Good Day New York." Their song "Can't Make Tears" is the theme song for AMC's TV show Hell on Wheels, and their music has been featured in many films, including the critically acclaimed August: Osage County.

The group has opened for the Eagles on several tours, including the current "History of the Eagles" tour, the "Summer 2010" tour, and the band's stadium tour with the Dixie Chicks and Keith Urban. JD & The Straight Shot has also opened up for both Joe Walsh and Don Henley's solo tours, the James Gang reunion tour, and performed at the New Orleans Jazz & Heritage Festival and Austin City Limits.

    The Indestructible Sounds Of

This raw rhythm''n''beat garage-rock''n''roll combo, headed up by the ubiquitous veteran rocker, Sir Bald Diddley (aka Hipbone Slim), delivers super rough, tough and wild mid-'60's inspired sounds that are just about as frantic as a pack of dogs in a lamp post factory. It's British beat at its best, loaded with grab-your-throat guitar riffs, snarling vocals, wailing harp and much maraca shaking -- proper raw-as-you-like freakbeat, inspired by the likes of the Pretty Things, Kinks, Downliners Sect, Them, Birds, Stones, Yardbirds, Jimmy Reed, Sonics ...

    Live In 1967 Volume 2

In 1967, before there was a Fleetwood Mac, Peter Green, John McVie and Mick Fleetwood were John Mayall's Bluesbreakers. The four musicians were only together for three months, which makes it even more remarkable that a staunch fan from Holland was able to sneak a one channel reel to reel tape recorder into five London clubs and capture this exciting glimpse into music history. For almost fifty years these tapes have remained unheard until John recently got them and began restoring them with the technical assistance of Eric Corne of Forty Below Records. Corne adds "While the source recording was very rough and the final result is certainly not hi-fidelity, it does succeed in allowing us to hear how spectacular these performances are.

    Works Volume 2

Remastered For The First Time In 24 Bit / High-Density Formats From The Original Tapes

Works Volume 2 is ELP's sixth studio album, released in 1977, and now expertly remastered for the first time in 24 bit / High-Density formats from the original tapes. The album's brief, eclectic compositions cover an array of musical styles, combining stimulating originals and handsomely orchestrated renditions of 'Maple Leaf Rag,' 'Honky Tonk Train Blues,' and 'Show Me The Way to Go Home.' Works 2 showcases incredibly strong performances from all 3 band members - Keith Emerson, Greg Lake and Carl Palmer. The album includes the massive hit 'I Believe in Father Christmas', Greg Lake's beautiful composition, highlighting his strong voice and vibrant acoustic guitar.

Formed in 1970, Emerson, Lake & Palmer were torchbearers of the progressive rock sound and one of rock's first supergroups. The world-conquering, stadium-filling prog giants helped to broaden the audience for the genre from hundreds of thousands into tens of millions and were one the most commercially successful rock bands of the 1970s. Their first 7 album releases all made the U.K. albums chart top 10 and U.S. top 20.

All I Ever See In You Is Me

Jillette Johnson is the rare artist who needs little sonic accompaniment to make an indelible impact. Produced by Dave Cobb (the Grammy Award-winner known for his work with Jason Isbell and Sturgill Simpson), Johnson's sophomore album All I Ever See in You Is Me offers up sparsely orchestrated songs centering on her spirited piano work and ever-changing vocal texture, an instrument that's irresistibly powerful whether she's belting out a refrain or whispering a hushed melody.

Like only the most timeless songwriters, Johnson finds infinite depth within that simplicity. Recorded at RCA Studio A - the historic Nashville space where Dolly Parton laid down 'Jolene' and 'I Will Always Love You' in the same three-hour span - All I Ever See in You Is Me bears an unhurried pace and warm intimacy that echoes the purposeful looseness of its production. Drifting between hazy romanticism and resolute self-awareness, Johnson examines heartbreak and resilience with a willful and magnetic vulnerability.

The twelfth record from these Portuguese gothic masters is an orchestral adventure including siren like choirs with a Wagnerian pomp! Strings, bongos, Oriental singing, grand guitars are just a tiny part of this amazing piece of work. From the first superincumbent second, the conceptual dramaturgy of MOONSPELL's work feels like a detonation of the mind. Playful and mean-spirited. 1755 is their magnum opus.

This musical masterpiece represents the year of horror where a giant earthquake wrecked their home of Lisbon. Naturally, this album is sung completely in Portuguese. The album features Paulo Bragança, supplying a hauntingly voice of a Fado fallen angel who is a big part of the Portuguese culture. His fascinating vocals are featured in In Tremor Dei (Eng.: Fear Of God). 1755 is an adventure in medieval landscapes full of threats, guarded by stirring hymns including the bad luck Desastre. Choirs filled with fear stab into the wild disharmony of the guitars. The album is emotionally, technically and completely breathtaking!

The score to Red Sparrow is composed by multiple award winner James Newton Howard. The score can be defined as one of the most impressive musical pieces he ever recorded. The orchestral grandeur captures the beauty of the Russian ballet. It is full of harmonies and moments of stunning magnificence, providing the correct emotional value for the scenes it accompanies. Howard is using classical pieces by Tchaikovsky's, Mozart and Bach. The soundtrack can be classified amongst the finest music he created during his long career.

James Newton Howard composed music for over 120 films, including the Academy Award-nominated scores for Defiance, Michael Clayton, The Village, The Fugitive, The Prince of Tides, and My Best Friend's Wedding, and Academy Award-nominated songs for Junior and One Fine Day. Howard also received Golden Globe nominations for his massive orchestral score for Peter Jacksons blockbuster remake of King Kong, his provocative symphonic score for Defiance, and his songs from Junior and One Fine Day.

    Ma Vlast (Speakers Corner)

Smetana's symphonic poem "Má Vlast" consists of several individual compositions which the composer put together at a later date to form a cycle and is one of the greatest testimonies to Czech national music. The Bohemian countryside and sagas are reflected in the tone poem From "Bohemia's Woods and Fields", while the programmatic "Moldau" occupies a rightful place among the most outstanding works to have been written in the late 19th century. Thanks to its popular folk melodies, its clearly structured and recognizable "programme", and brilliant orchestration, the work has never failed to arouse the enthusiasm of a wide public.

Rafael Kubelik conducted numerous first-class orchestras both in the concert hall and in the recording studio, and won a deserved reputation as the Smetana connoisseur. He is to be congratulated on his choice of the Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra for this recording: gentle and transparent in the gossamer-light orchestral passages, powerful and smooth when playing as a full tutti. This thoroughly satisfying performance is further enhanced by its excellent recording technique and is to be recommended to all collectors.

Ravel Debussy - Ma Mere Nocturnos (Speakers Corner)

Ravel's ballet music Ma Mère l'Oye, originally written for piano, four hands, was inspired by Charles Perrault's fairy tale. Ravel mostly wrote music for small forms which is reflected by the short movements of the suite. The world renowned Orchestre de la Suisse Romande, led by the conductor best suited to this kind of music, Ernest Ansermet, bring out the vivacious and colourful elements of the work. The orchestra's timbre is well suited to the gentle shading of the music, as is shown in the final Jardin fÉerique.

Completed by Debussy in 1899, the three Nocturnes reveal the aesthetics of a composer who put Nature above Art. Debussy endeavoured to achieve a natural flow and consistency in his music without slavishly copying the sounds of nature. Although Nuages (Clouds), Fêtes (Festivals) and Sirènes (Sirents) are night pieces, they are seen with a view to light and shadow: two optic conditions that influence the music.

The artists give an amazingly transparent and differentiated performance of the music. The present recording should not be missed by any lover of Impressionist music.

Limited Edition Of 3000 Individually Numbered Copies On Solid Red & Solid Black Mixed Vinyl

As one the most successful bands in the heavy metal scene Machine Head changed their musical style from their trash sound to melodies which incorporates rapping vocals. The Burning Red is a musical experiment with disco drums, crooning vocals and funky basslines. But their progressive sound can still be found in the tribal beat and guitar melodies of a song like The Blood, the Sweat, the Tears. Its heavy sound is combined with subtle melodies and some groovy rhythms, but there are also rapping structures as in Desire to Fire. The album consists of 12 songs and is recorded at the Indigo Ranch Studios. It features new member Ahrue Luster on lead guitar, replacing Logan Mader.

Machine Head sold over 3 million records worldwide. The band is one of the pioneering bands from the American heavy metal scène. The only original member, lead vocalist and rhythm guitarist Robb Flynn, is the man who puts all his inspiration into the heavy and melodic sounds.

The pressing is limited to 3000 individually numbered copies on red and black vinyl.

    The Genius Of Earl Hooker

Earl Hooker was an incredible slide guitarist residing in Chicago during the 1950s and '60s. Hooker split his time between his birth place on the Mississippi Delta and his adopted home of Chicago were he played with the likes of Ike Turner and Sonny Boy Williamson. The Genius of Earl Hooker, his exceedingly rare Cuca Records release, circa '67 finds him laying down instrumental blues at its best!
