    The Second Annual Report

Pressed On Limited Edition White Colored Vinyl

Mute are delighted to announce a special white LP
reissue of The Second Annual Report, the landmark
1977 debut from industrial music pioneers Throbbing
    Gristle.

The Second Annual Report is considered to be
influential within electronic music, being one of the first
    industrial music albums.

Recorded in their rehearsal space and at various grubby
gigs onto a Sony cassette recorder in a defiantly lo-fi
manner in 1977, the music alternately chugged along
like a squelchy, crude cop of the Velvet Underground,
or stretched out into malingering new age, like a
syphilitic Tangerine Dream. The music is relentless,
grinding distortion, only occasionally leavened by vocal
    samples and percussion.

Michael Bonner of Uncut described the music as "a
dystopian churn of smoke and asbestos dust" and
"queerly hypnotic". The Vinyl Factory's Anton Spice
acknowledged the role of the album with its provocative
subject matter in establishing Throbbing Gristle's
reputation as a transgressive figure in underground
    electronic music.

The album that established Throbbing Gristle's
reputation as perverse noiseniks with an unseemly
interest in the seedy side of life, The Second Annual
Report is still a difficult listen today, but it set the tone
for the entire Throbbing Gristle mission: the endless
    binding of clean and unclean.

First Time Both Periods Of Cabaret Voltaire Are Together On
    One Release (1978-1981 & 1983-1985)

Cabaret Voltaire, alongside Human League, Throbbing
Gristle, Fad Gadget and The Normal, were at the
forefront of the UK Electronic Movement of the late '70s.
Way ahead of their time, Cabaret Voltaire's blend of
dance music, techno, dub, house and experimental
made them, without a doubt, one of the most influential
acts of the last 35 years.

    #7875 (Electropunk to Technopop 1978-1985),
compiles for the first time, both periods of Cabaret
Voltaire together on one release-- all remastered from
original files. It contains singles and popular tracks
and also includes single mixes not previously available
digitally. This release is easily Cabaret Voltaire's most
thorough catalog-skimming compilation yet and serves
as a perfect introduction to the band for new fans.

    20 Jazz Funk Greats

Pressed On Limited Edition Green Colored Vinyl

Mute are delighted to announce a limited edition green LP reissue
of 20 Jazz Funk Greats, the landmark 1979 album from industrial
    music pioneers Throbbing Gristle.

The impetus for the record apparently came about from Genesis
P-Orridge's mum's request that the band record something
"nice". The tame cover photo shows the nattily dressed band -
white disco jacket, comfy slacks, mini-skirt - stood amid flowers
on a clifftop. The chosen scene of natural beauty was Beachy
    Head, a notorious suicide spot.

20 Jazz Funk Greats' cheerful breaching of lounge jazz and
disco contains some of the band's prettiest moments on songs
like the breathy "Hot on the Heels of Love". Similarly "Tanith"
and "Exotica" are gentle interludes in which TG's usual jagged
punctuations are kept to a minimum. You could be fooled into
thinking this was indeed easy-listening industrial.

Pitchfork wrote that "20 Jazz Funk Greats finds the band waking
up from D.O.A's dark night of the soul and feeling curiously
frisky. Snacking on not only the titular funk and jazz, the band
also takes touristic zig zags through exotica, rock and disco",
ultimately describing it as a "kitsch detour toward mutant disco".
Uncut Magazine wrote that "musically, it turned away from the
precipice; not exactly jazz and funk, but sublimating TG's noise
elements within electronic rhythms and proto-exotica." Dusted
Magazine described the album as "a deliberate attempt to toy
with the ideas behind marketing strategy and the purpose of
    musical genres."

Pitchfork ranked 20 Jazz Funk Greats at number 91 in its list of
the 100 greatest albums of the 1970s. UK magazine Fact named
it the best album of the 1970s, writing that "This album is a
rupture. It's an open crack into the unpronounceable dimensions
into which tumble important streams of 20th century pop, art
and underground culture, to seethe around each other, mingling,
festering, sprouting new and unpredictable forms which in turn
would ooze out to infest vast sections of what comes after."

God Damn's debut album 'Vultures' presents a universe of sound, from the low-end melodic boom of sneering anthem 'Silver Spooned' through the sub-dark psychedelic breakdown of 'We Don't Like You' to the unexpected lo-fi strummed opening of the throbbing and utterly tumescent nine-minute sludge epic 'Skeletons'. These Are Powers are known for the dissonance of their early recordings, a cacophony of rhythms, and industrial/electronic experiments that recalled Throbbing Gristle one moment and DNA the next. All Aboard Future contains exotic, abstract, hand crafted sounds - made, found, and electronically born. The band invited thirteen visual artists to interpret the album; their artwork adorns the pages of the accompanying booklet. Limited edition vinyl.

    Bring It On!

While never dropping their trademark sexy, horror-flick flair, their new CD, produced by Bad Religion's Brett Gurewitz, reveals new depths of songwriting. Brash, Link Wray guitars, singer Patricia's sultry petulance, throbbing standup bass; all served up in loving tribute to the brooding pop of '80s icons like Blondie and Siouxsie Sioux. With two European headlining tours, performances on BBC1 and Jimmy Kimmel, and a major Warped Tour under their belts, HorrorPops are set to build on the musical success of their 2004 debut, Hell Yeah. And kick some ass.

Shake 'em up! R&B from the vaults of King/Federal Records!

The lascivious pen of Henry "Hank" Ballard was responsible for many risquÉ odes, including The Midnighters' "Work With Me Annie," "Sexy Ways," and "Get It," major R&B hits of the early '50s all included on 1956's Their Greatest Hits! The FCC banned several of the band's songs from airplay, which only made them that much more desirable for the growing teenage market, and this Sundazed edition-pressed on 180 gram audiophile vinyl at RTI-is the ultimate way to experience the best of the throbbing fury of this storied ensemble at its peak. In 2009, Kraftwerk have upgraded their Kling Klang masters with the latest studio technology and these magnificent recordings still sound like nothing else in the history of music. Kraftwerk are unique, pristine, profound and beautiful. Decades may pass, but their streamlined synthetic symphonies stand outside time, as fresh as tomorrow, transcendent and sublime.

Kraftwerk beam themselves into the future here by writing about home computers, online dating and globalized electronic surveillance years before these phenomena truly came into existence. A journey into the bright hopes and dark fears of the booming microchip revolution, Computer World is a serenely beautiful and almost seamless collage of sensual melodies and liquid beatscapes. Tracks like Numbers and Pocket Calculator, with their weightless bleeps and elastic beats, predict the silky rhythms of Chicago house and inspire a generation of Detroit techno artists. Kraftwerk's fanfare for the silicon age still sounds ageless, timeless and throbbing with invention.

Last year Brandon Welchez and Chuck Rowell released their acclaimed debut album, Summer of Hate as Crocodiles. Straddling vast sonic terrains from the jagged guitar stabs of street-strutting lead single Neon Jesus, to throbbing kraut rock, expansive shoegaze and irresistibly danceable disco-punk jams, Summer Of Hate drew comparisons with The Velvet Underground and Primal Scream.

Significantly, it also caught the ear of James Ford, Simian Mobile Disco man and producer of the Arctic Monkeys, Klaxons and Florence and the Machine amongst others. Together, all three headed into the desert in early 2010 to create Summer Of Hate's psychedelic, hyptonic and anthemic follow-up. An album that would later be christened Sleep Forever.

Raw it may be, but Sleep Forever is still an unmistakingly more refined beast than its predecessor. Drums and organ whirls envelope you on tracks like Mirrors and Sleep Forever, which nod to Ladies and Gentelman era Spiritualized as much as they do Neu! and The Velvet Undergound.

    Ventriloquizzing

After two years experimenting in the shadows, cutting edge minimalist-funk heroes Fujiya & Miyagi are back with their darkest and most propulsive set yet. The band's fourth full-length, Ventriloquizzing has a dark heart, via its throbbing electro-glam beat and menacing lyrics. I think there's an underlying anger, or perhaps just annoyance, at institutions and people in general, and probably ourselves too, says singer/guitarist David Best. And it also seemed like the right time to work with someone else to help us avoid going to our default setting, which the band combated by bringing in a co-producer for the first time in the form of famed producer Thom Monahan (Devendra Banhart, Vetiver, Pernice Brothers), their first time not self-producing. Written in Brighton, UK and recorded in Sacramento, CA; Ventriloquizzing is likely the first (and last) black comedy you can dance to.

Saintseneca, a young band from Columbus, Ohio led by singer-songwriter
and multi-instrumentalist Zac Little, release their ANTI- debut Dark Arc in 2014. While the group formed in Columbus, a majority of Saintseneca's
members, including songwriter Little, hail from the rural hills of Appalachia,
a landscape that has infused the group's evocative music with a deep sense
of introspection. Following in the footsteps of heartland bands who have
sought to twist the music of the old weird America into new shapes - from
the Violent Femmes to Neutral Milk Hotel - Saintseneca perform songs that
sound familiar and utterly strange, all at once. As an introduction to the band,
ANTI- released a 7" single featuring "Uppercutter" this fall, a haunting song
anchored by throbbing acoustic guitars, atmospheric piano and Little's soaring vocals, which quickly became a press and indie retail favorite. Now with
Dark Arc, Saintseneca deliver on Pitchfork's promise of "a sonic fullness
    Saintseneca only hinted at previously."

    El Pintor

"Indie rock's elite class" - Billboard

"The masters of emotional turbulence." - Q Magazine

'El Pintor' is Interpol's fifth and most exhilarating studio album. It's a driving, relentless record, taut and epic in equal measure.

The album, recorded as a three-piece with frontman & guitarist Paul Banks picking up the bass, kicks off with "All The Rage Back Home," signaling a return to what Interpol does best, layering pulsing bass, bursts of guitar, and driving drums beneath Banks' instantly recognizable voice.

Meanwhile, "My Desire" features a throbbing beat and insistent guitar riffs that shoot off like flares into the night, while on "Same Town, New Story" Banks crafted up an unexpected melodic context for Daniel Kessler's laser-sharp guitar lines.

In contrast with previous records, Interpol took a step back on 'El Pintor' and let the songs happen. What emerged is something urgent and compelling, something revitalized and
reenergized. The result is as accomplished and thrilling a collection as the band has ever released.

Features Etching On Side D (No Music)

While past albums operated on the intimacy of stripped-down folk music (The Grime and the Glow, Unknown Rooms), or the throbbing pulse of supplemental electronics (Pain Is Beauty, Abyss), Chelsea Wolfe's sixth official album Hiss Spun wrings its exquisiteness out of a palette of groaning bass, pounding drums, and crunching distortion. Recorded by Kurt Ballou (Converge), the album was conceived as an emotional purge, a means of coming to terms with the tumult of the outside world by exploring the complexities of one's inner unrest. I'm at odds with myself, she explains. I got tired of trying to disappear. The record became very personal in that way. I wanted to open up more, but also create my own reality. Hiss Spun features contributions by Aaron Turner (Old Man Gloom, SUMAC) and Troy Van Leeuwen (Queens of the Stone Age, Failure).

First Authorized Vinyl Edition Of 1983 Debut Studio Album In 25 Years

    Re-Mastered With Original Cover Art

"This is all slabs of sound, rhythm and screaming/testifying. What more do you need? In a way, it was a reaction against Punk (and just about any other music you can think of), and the conservative notion that 3 chords were somehow necessary. I used to deny it vehemently at the time, but No Wave (I "hated" that scene too, for some reason I can't remember now) played a big role as the germ from which this music grew, along with The Stooges and Throbbing Gristle, of course. I wanted Swans to be "heavier" though - I wanted the music to obliterate - why, I don't remember! I think it just felt good. Live, we used two basses (playing utterly unmusical chords that were stabbed and left to sustain or sometimes hit in staccato or opposing rhythms), drums, a "percussionist" that slammed down on a metal table with a metal strap, crude cassette loops of various sounds/noises (usually some kind of undefined ROAR), and Norman Westberg's glorious sustained and screaming guitar chords. It was pretty elating to play live - for us. If 100 people showed up (which would have been a huge audience at the time - 20 was more the average), 80 were guaranteed to leave by the second song. Somehow that tension - contempt or indifference from the audience - was nourishing, so we kept going.

Here's some music I was listening to at the time: Throbbing Gristle, Psychic TV, The Stooges, Brian Eno, Teenage Jesus And The Jerks, DNA, The Contortions, Glenn Branca, Black Flag, early Pink Floyd, This Heat, Kraftwerk, The Germs, Cabaret Voltaire, Can, Public Image LTD., SPK "

Beginning in 1982, the conceptual audiovisual troupe labeled Psychic TV set outon a multimedia journey filled with subversion, liberation, and rebellion. Materialized between Throbbing Gristle co-founder Genesis P-Orridge and AlternativeTV songwriter Alex Fergusson, Psychic TV started pulling in familiar faces with the likes of Peter "Sleazy" Christopherson, Paula P-Orridge, Jhonn Balance,David Tibet, John Gosling, and countless others. While the members' previous works took root in the counterculture zeitgeist of late '70s UK punk and conceptual art, it was no longer a question of how to rebel against authority, but rather how to carefully subvert it through collective infiltration. Parallel to Psychic TV,its members formed the anti-cult faction The Temple of Psychick Youth, further propagating the Psychic TV message and vision.

While the ensuing years saw Psychic TV's major label infection and record breaking live album release binge, it wasn't until 1988 that the band started to ready itself for a chart-friendly pop endeavor in the form of Allegory and Self. This would be the band's most notable and successful endeavor, but tragically, it would be the final songwriting collaboration between P-Orridge and Fergusson .Allegory and Self was a perfect storm of catchy pop melody along with subversive counter-culture reference and occult leanings, packaged in a perfect bundle of underground hits.

The record's opening track "Godstar," a song gushing obsessive praise upon the fallen Rolling Stones member Brian Jones, would give the album its most notable identity. "Godstar's" melodic hooks and haunting, Phil Spector-era lyrical chant gives into to all the hallmarks of a chart-topping hit. "Just Like Arcadia"and "Being Lost" follows in similar footsteps, charging along with a somewhat whimsical Beach Boys-esque pop quality. The album also contained a sneak-peak into what direction Psychic TV was heading into going forward, apparent in the acid house number "She Was Surprised." Tracks like "Starlit Mire" and "Thee Dweller" reflect more of what the Psychic TV live experience was akin to in the '80s, aggressive and hypnotic. Altogether, Allegory and Self would stand alone as the band's signature apex from the original '80s lineup.

    The Naive Shaman

Richard Youngs has been making music for over two decades. The Naive Shaman, released in dual format (cd and lp), is a deeply personal work. Created on a computer at home, it is a high density digital song cycle driven by heavy, heavy electric bass guitar.

The opening Life On A Beam combines a modal vocal line with throbbing sonics and non-linear percussion. Elsewhere a plaintive voice threads itself through frosted atmospherics and we hear Richard's first recorded kazoo work since 1992's New Angloid Sound. At the core of the album is Sonar In My Soul, a bass loop on to which are collaged strangulated guitar, singing and more singing. The track climaxes in a hollered plea for unity. The second half of the set contrasts Once It Was Autumn, a succintly crafted dub chant, with the epic Summer's Edge II, whose sprawling 16 minutes anchor a floating vocal melody and free-flowing drums with fuzzed bass octaves.

At a time when he has increased his commitment to live performance, Richard has--paradoxically--produced an album that explores recording technology as an instrument, a work where song is modulated by sound. By critics and true music fans everywhere, Youngs has been deemed the king of the progressive minimalists. He has now released seven full-length records in addition to multiple collaborations with other artists such as Makoto Kawabata (of Acid Mothers Temple fame), Simon Wickham-Smith and Neil Campbell.

    Steep Formations

Started by Kid Millions and Bobby Matador of Oneida, People of the North is another voice emanating from that inscrutable Brooklyn collective. The group has always included Kid and Bobby, and usually other members of Oneida as well. In 2010, People of the North released its first full-length album, titled Deep Tissue. This recording was hailed by cognoscenti of contemporary psychedelia as an essential component of the recent Oneida canon.

Steep Formations, a double LP consisting of two long-form pieces, was recorded at the Ocropolis in 2010 and 2011, with the participation of Shahin Motia and Barry London of Oneida. Here, the drumming of Kid Millions has ascended to a profound and utterly unique level: muscular African-derived fluidity and relentless motorik drive have been alchemized into an indescribable brew that surges and pounds among the distorted tides of Border Waves; and the stony, brutal glaze of the title track displays a far more severe commitment to minimalism and noise than prior work offered.

While much that has been written about People of the North before remains relevant here, newly apt touchstones and contextual clues might include Kevin Drumm, Giusto Pio, Terry Riley, Tony Williams, Conrad Schnitzler, Throbbing Gristle, Pelt.

    Born Villain

Born Villain is the eighth studio album from the always controversial artist Marilyn Manson, to be released in a joint venture between his own label Hell, etc. and Cooking Vinyl. Manson described the release as more romantic yet self-abusive and featuring a sound he dubs suicide death metal. All the Manson benchmarks are once again here including dark, sinister vocals, throbbing rhythms and heavy, thrashing guitars not to mention some punk rock fervor thrown in for good measure. Includes the rhythmic lead single No Reflection.

The new record put simply has the ambition and determination of how I started making music in the first place, Manson says. It sounds like the first record in that it's not afraid to do anything. I had to remove myself from my lifestyle and start fresh. It doesn't really sound like any of my old records. In fact it sort of sounds like what I listened to before I made records; Killing Joke, Joy Division, Revolting Cocks, Bauhaus, Birthday Party. It's very rhythm-driven. I think this will probably be the grandest concept record of all.

    Eagulls

Since forming in 2009, Leeds-based Eagulls have become synonymous with a discontented, disillusioned kind of anger, molded into bullets of post punk that's rife with urgency and aggression.

Now, following further standalone releases, their debut album is complete and slated for release in early 2014. Finessing the incensed spirit of their early tracks and gigs, it sets its stall out as a heavier, darker and more exhilarating step on from what's come before. 'Nerve Endings', opening track and first taste of the record, encapsulates that in throbbing bass and George hollering "can't find my end" whilst 'Fester-Blister' provides an anthemic streak cutting through a wall of frenetic noise. 'Tough Luck' takes inspiration from outside the punk pool associated with Eagulls, boasting a rumbling Joy Division-esque bassline. It all ends on the searing rush of 'Soulless Youth', which finds George declaring "I never feel fine/They're soulless inside the soulless youth" with enough bile to make it clear just how he feels about his generation.

With the record now complete and ready for release, expect their own unique brand of mayhem to be lighting up venues around the country as they return to their natural environment of the road to reinforce their abrasive brilliant reputation once more.

    Dark Place

Some singers can create a mood far before the first syllables of lyric have been
woven into a full story; a tone, mixed to dissolve perfectly into music, can say it
all. Such is the case with Jessie Baylin, whose ethereal voice shoots the opening
notes of Dark Place, her fourth album, into instant emotive territory - it envelops
in a mysterious gauze, setting the stage for what is her most raw, personal
work yet and also her most thrilling.

Baylin's always been adept at capturing the fragile, complex state of
human relationships with a hand that understands the middle ground - things
aren't always what they seem, and she isn't afraid to play in that treacherous territory.
She often weaves a forlorn lyric with an optimistic vocal lick, or a cheerier
song with a foreboding crunch of guitar, looming like a distant thunderstorm; it
sometimes makes it difficult to tell if a track is innately happy or sad, but that's
the point. Dark Place is the epitome of this dichotomy.

It's the combination of elements on Dark Place that make it such a
rattling look into not only Baylin's mind but the human condition: her voice, in its
other-worldly tone that can be both angelic and deeply plaintive, cuts through
poetic lyrics with throbbing guitars that carve scratches at the beautiful surface,
bounding free of both classification and genre. She's Nico, if she could sing like
Nina Simone; she's Dusty Springfield fronting Mazzy Star. "Dusty," she says,
    before adding, "on Quaaludes."
