    Throwing Copper (Black Vinyl)

    Import

When Live's Throwing Copper was released in 1994, it lingered in the bottom of the album charts for a few months before the alternative music lovers finally caught on. And then they played a massive game of catch-up: Throwing Copper yielded worldwide radio hits like "I Alone", "All Over You" and "Selling The Drama" which eventually partially defined the sound of the nineties. Ed Kowalczyk's spiritual lyrics and passionate delivery resonated with millions of fans, positioning this band as one of the sincerest and most sophisticated bands from the era. Listening to Throwing Copper throws a lot of us back to the days of baggy pants, painted dreadlocks and pogoing like there's no tomorrow.

    Throw Me In The River

Throw Me in the River, the soon to be released third LP from
Melbourne, Australia's The Smith Street Band is multidimensional. Full
of their trademark earnest storytelling, the album is a virtual passport
to their global rise, with songs written while on tour in Winnipeg, Salt
Lake City, Calgary, London, New York, and North Melbourne. Less
than a year earlier, the band released a career defying 5-track EP
entitled Don't Fuck With Our Dreams. The single was added to radio
and launched with a 10-date Australian headline tour supported by
US acts Joyce Manor and Cheap Girls. The band graced magazine
covers, sold-out venues across Australia, signed international recording
deals and toured the UK, Europe, and the USA, including a

    Sine And Moon

In the summer of 2011, while prepping his debut album Twirligig, Jonti put together the Sine & Moon Mix for the Stones Throw podcast, a collection of earlier songs he'd recorded on 4-track. In the months since the mixtape, he's been hit up with requests for the individual tracks, and so Sine & Moon (the album) came about. But then the album took another turn. Jonti revisited the songs, mixed and mastered them anew. Now you can enjoy these songs on vinyl as an official Stones Throw release. Includes download card.

"People liked the songs on the Sine And Moon podcast, so I wanted to get them out. So I turned it into an album with extra's, new mixes and original Jeff Jank artwork. I really love these songs and I hope you enjoy!" - Jonti

    Soundpieces: Da Antidote!

Though they were together since high school, the Lootpack - Madlib, Wildchild and DJ Romes - first made their presence known in 1994 when the group's beat conductor, Madlib, produced "Mary Jane," for Tha Alkaholiks. Later that year, Lootpack's lyrical skills were heard on the song "Turn The Party Out" on the Alkaholiks' debut LP 21 & Over, and WLIX from the Liks' second LP.
    ,p>
The positive feedback from these collaborations led to the Lootpack's own EP "Ill Psych Move" on Crate Digger's Palace Records in 1996, a venture funded by Madlib's father, soul-crooner Otis Jackson, Sr.

It was through this poorly-distributed 12" that the group caught the attention of Stones Throw Records' founder Peanut Butter Wolf, who heard the record on college radio and hunted the group down. The group eventually signed for Stones Throw, paving the way for the release of 1999's Soundpieces: Da Antidote!.

Now, back in its original 3xLP form, Stones Throw has included a download card and bonus 7" record with an unreleased track!

    A Strange Arrangement

The retro tag is added to almost any contemporary work that sounds like it was originally recorded between 1966 and 1974, and Hawthorne, among the newest contributors to the genre, is aware of how trends come and go. After being introduced to Stones Throw label head Peanut Butter Wolf, even the label boss was skeptical. He showed me two songs and I didnt understand what I was listening to, Wolf recalls. I asked him if they were old songs that he did re-edits of I couldnt believe they were new songs and that he played all the instruments. The Funky 16 Corners

Stones Throw Records presents a glimpse into the lives and music of 16 unsung heroes of the late 60s and early 70s' funk revolution from each corner of the United States. These are musicians that strove to achieve the success of The Meters and James Brown, musicians that played their instruments with a gut-wrenching power unheard in modern music, musicians that testified on wax and have resurfaced some thirty years after disappearing from the music scene. The intensity of their recordings has not lost one ounce of soul with the time passed. Now, finally, the meticulously researched The Funky 16 Corners stands as an historical document to this era in American music.

    Ruff Draft Instrumentals

"Before we get this started, let me explain it. It's Ruff Draft. For my real niggaz only ... Sound like it's straight from the ma'fuckin' cassette! ... Let's do it."

... Thus begins Ruff Draft. These self-produced tracks make up one of the late J Dilla's least known works during his lifetime. Released on vinyl only in February 2003 this sought-after release was elusive and virtually unknown to the casual Dilla fan until Stones Throw's reissue in 2007. Recorded in the wake of a failed deal with major label MCA, Dilla returned to solo recordings as a fiercely independent artist with Ruff Draft.

These are the instrumentals from the infamous, the official, Ruff Draft.

The Minimal Wave Tapes Vol. 2

Minimal Wave is both a genre of underground DIY electronic music from North America and Europe in the late 1970s and 80s, and the name of the label devoted to unearthing these recordings. The Minimal Wave Tapes is the first official anthology of Minimal Wave music from this label. Most of the songs were originally released on limited edition cassettes or vinyl by the artists themselves, and only a handful of people knew about them. Theyve been remastered from their analog source tapes and compiled here by Minimal Wave's Veronica Vasicka and Stones Throw's Peanut Butter Wolf.

The Minimal Wave musical genre was hallmarked by the use of the analog synths and drum machines manufactured in the '70s and '80s, and characterized by simple music structures made by musicians working in the early D.I.Y. asthetic: recording on tape in their home studios, creating their own album artwork, and often collaborating via postage mail. The fanzine CLEM (Contact List Of Electronic Musicians) was very influential in creating a worldwide community for this sort of music, before digital technology and the internet came into play.

Minimal Wave the label was founded in New York City in 2005 by Veronica Vasicka, who focused the label solely on obscure Minimal Wave recordings, remastering and releasing them on limited vinyl and digitally.

The Minimal Waves Tapes fits neatly into Stones Throw Records' own tradition of compiling or reissuing the independent music of the past which influences the independent music we make today ie '60s funk (The Funky 16 Corners), early '80s hip-hop (The Third Unheard) and West Coast electro/rap (Arabian Prince's Innovative Life) to name a few. Featuring 14-tracks on gatefold 2LP.

    7 Days Of Funk

Stones Throw is pleased to announce the release of 7 Days of Funk - Dam-Funk and Snoopzilla aka the legendary Snoop Dogg.

"We're the babies of the Mothership," says Snoop. "I've had funk influences in my music my whole career. Dam-Funk is cold. He's keeping the funk alive and I knew I had to get down with him."

The King of Modern Funk meets the smoked-out scion of G-Funk on the 7 Days of Funk album, where Snoop performs under the name Snoopzilla, the homage to the legendary funk master, Bootsy Collins, who often went by the moniker Bootzilla. After an initial chance meeting two years ago, Dam and Snoop began to collaboratev when Snoop invited Dam to perform with him at a 2011 SXSW show - the musical connection was inherent.

"Snoop knew what I was thinking without me having to articulate it. That's how you know when you gel artistically with someone," Dam-Funk says. "These beats were made for him and he laid down some of the smoothest harmonies and melodies I've ever heard. It's hip-hop, but you can also hear what we grew up on, from Zapp to Evelyn 'Champagne' King and Patrice Rushen."

As an entertainment icon, there is little Snoop hasn't accomplished. The Long Beach legend has sold over 30,000,000 albums, and received 15 Grammy® nominations, but at heart, the funk has inspired many tracks through his career.

Growing up at the other end of L.A. was Pasadena's Dam-Funk. Since his 2009 debut, Toeachizown, the Stones Throw-signed visionary has defined modern funk music-this isn't a fad for him, it's a way of life. He's the new vanguard of a tradition encompassing George Clinton, Roger Troutman, Prince and Snoop Dogg himself, who helped pioneer G-Funk with Dr. Dre.

    Head Sounds

Karriem Riggins is best known as a jazz drummer and hip-hop producer for artists like Common, Slum Village, Talib Kweli and The Roots, but he doesn't categorize himself as anything but an artist. He advises younger musicians to do the same.
You don't have to put yourself in a box...there's so many different ways to go, Riggins says. A student of late jazz bassist Ray Brown, he tours with another Brown protÉgÉ, Grammy Award winner Diana Krall. In 2011, he collaborated with former Beatle Paul McCartney in concert and on Kisses on the Bottom, McCartney's first studio release in five years. Names of some of the jazz artists he's backed reads like the genre's hall of fame - Hank Jones, Oscar Peterson, Milt Jackson, Donald Byrd and Ron Carter.

But on his solo debut Alone Together, set for an October 23 release on Stones Throw Records (Vinyl and digital will be released in two-parts over summer and fall 2012), Riggins plants himself firmly as a hip-hop producer with a 34-track instrumental odyssey through nearly every influence on his career thus far. The project was inspired by much of the music he was creating while living in Los Angeles, and also by the love of his son and family.

Now residing in his native Detroit, Riggins is back where it all began. I feel like I can really breath and stay inspired here, and I have room to set up my lab and be creative, he says. This is the rationale behind the title Alone Together, taken from a jazz standard written by Arthur Schwartz and Howard Dietz that begin with the words, Alone together, above the crowd.

Coming back to the machines, I feel like I can really express myself, Riggins says. This is the way that I express my rhythms.

Machines, however, are just one way he expresses his rhythms. Midway through the album, the track Water is interrupted by a vocal snippet where the speaker places Riggins right at the intersection of hip-hop and jazz. Alone Together is that intersection; it's the jazz music he's played professionally since the age of 19, and it's crafting beats like Africa on an MPC5000 while touring throughout Eastern Europe and Russia.

I need the balance, Riggins says, of working with the likes of Krall and McCartney, and also being able to go back to the studio and create hip-hop. Without that, I couldn't be who I am.

Songs on Alone Together range from 14 seconds to a little over three minutes, and are the essence of man vs. machine. When Riggins channels Elvin Jones on the album's climax and tribute to his longtime friend, J Dilla the Greatest, his tools are a Gretsch drum kit, the Fender Rhodes and an MPC3000. As versed as he is in jazz and pop, the machines will always be at the root - until the next thing.

There's always something new to figure out, he says. That's the blessing in it.

    Seven Seals

Having given birth to a music career and to a human child within the span of a few months, celebrated percussionist JAMES PANTS withdrew into solitude for some weeks in the year 2008. Hermetically ensuring his privacy in his remote cabin in and around Spokane, Washington, Pants spurned the noise and clatter of the globetrotting lifestyle, as he nurtured his seed in the form of beautiful baby girl Olive, and took to penning this concept album, now known as Seven Seals. For the momentwith the exception of his recent touring of Europe and China, wowing the throngs with his exhilarating live ensemble ROYAL ZODIACthe reclusive Pants occupies himself almost entirely with his offspring, and the disciplined study of oceanography, astronomy and gourmet Latin cooking.

    Creaturesque

Perhaps more sonically upbeat than its predecessor, Creaturesque's details are at times painted in both optimistic and sobering tones. Reitherman's scattershot poetics touch on an array of ideas; it's oppressive American machisimo and Suburbanite sexuality. It's soft drugs and convertible cars. It's the struggle for higher expectations within the mess of modern life, and when wrapped up in the structures of TMTS' sure-handed tunes it's an all too delicious combination.

    Good Things

Good Things marks a shift in methodology from personal to political for Aloe Blacc, who refers to the project as his report on present conditions - the misappropriation of wealth, pilaging of resources, a universal lack of compassion, and the struggle to survive. Ethereal production from Truth & Souls Leon Michels and Jeff Silverman mask a foreboding undercurrent in which Aloe Blacc crafts thought provoking lyrics. Nowhere is this more evident than on lead single I Need A Dollar - theme for HBOs How to Make It in America. The first generation American offspring of Panamanian parents, Aloe has become what writer-activist Amiri Baraka once said of John Coltrane: He is a singular scope of feeling...a more fixed traveler who has found cohesion in art and life. The path from his debut Shine Through (2006) to Good Things is akin to the maturation of Marvin Gaye between Thats the Way Love Is and Whats Going On. The two are companion pieces in that they show who the artist is, what they stand for, and define the soul music of their time.

    Madvillainy Instrumentals

MF DOOM and Madlib are Madvillain. The two met in 2002 and soon began working on Madvillainy which would be finished over the next year and released in March 2004. The music on Madvillainy went against the grain of all popular conventions in contemporary hip-hop: short songs, dirty sound, no choruses, and with lyrical themes which were not always clear to everyone on first listen. The album received the highest critical praise of a hip-hop album released in 2004, and years later has continued to generate interest and controversy.

This modern classic, while previously available only in a plain sleeve, is given the proper treatment of a full color jacket.

    This Generation

Inspired by reggae, sound system culture and the myriad of musical styles influenced by Jamaican music old and new, The Lions' sound is
    firmly placed in soul music.

"All the guys in The Lions grew up on classic Jamaican records so since we began we have wanted to give our records that same edge and roughness that we grew up hearing on LPs by The Upsetters, Soul
Syndicate, The Rockers Band and Roots Radics. The rhythm section was all recorded to tape, the Hammond buzzed a little, fuses blew and good mistakes were left in. We basically made the dusty reggae soul
LP WE have been wanting to hear for years." - Dan Ubick (producer)

The band draws together a dozen or so of LA's elite reggae and soul forerunners who loosely coalesced as The Lions in 2007.
