    Duets II

In a 1965 interview with LIFE, Frank Sinatra said: For my money, Tony Bennett is the best singer in the business.
He excites me when I watch him. He moves me. He's the singer who gets across what the composer has in mind, and probably a little more.

And for the past sixty-odd years, Tony has been doing exactly that. With 15 Grammy Awards and a multitude of Gold and Platinum status recordings under his arm, this man sure knows how to work those pipes.

Duets II is another collection of American Songbook standards performed in the best of ways.

Duets II includes collaborations with the best voices of music: Aretha Franklin, Natalie Cole, Norah Jones and k.d. lang grace the recording booth with this legendary singer.
But it is the tragic and premature passing of Amy Winehouse that makes this album truly special; her appearance on the duet 'Body And Soul' is the last known recording of the British songbird, and it is a truly heartrending version of the 1930 jazz classic.

Toni Harper's two original albums Toni (1956) and Lady Lonely (1959).

Toni Harper's childhood was made of the magic any aspiring adult artist would kill for: a platinum record, a performance at Carnegie Hall, evenings spent sharing a stage with such performers as Cab Calloway, and invitations to appear on television with Frank Sinatra, Perry Como, Milton Berle, and Ed Sullivan. And all of the magic unfolded before she'd turned 12 years old.

The jazz vocalist, who now goes by the name Toni Dunlap, got her big break in 1945 when she went up against a couple hundred other kids at an audition held by choreographer Nick Castle. Harper, who had been a dance student of Maceo Anderson, passed muster as far as her dancing, but when she sang Waitin' for the Train to Come In, she had the audition sewn up on the spot. Castle cast her in his production of Christmas Follies, which was staged at Los Angeles' Wilshire Ebell Theatre. Harper drew enthusiastic reviews and went on to earn a platinum record when she was eight years old with Candy Store Blues.

Harper paired with Herb Jeffries for You're Too Tall 'n' I'm Too Small, the number for which she later paired live with Calloway at Los Angeles' Million Dollar Theatre. Television beckoned the young singer and she was a guest on numerous programs, among them Sullivan's weekly variety show. When she wasn't appearing on television, she was singing at numerous New York hot spots that included the Apollo, the Strand, and the Paramount. At the age of 11, Harper topped it all off by singing at Carnegie Hall.

Like many child stars, Harper's career slowed down as she began to mature. As a teenager, she was too old for the childhood image that had given her a great start, but too young to effectively take on a more adult image. She attended high school in Los Angeles, involving herself in such extracurricular activities as drama, choir, and the glee club. She continued to take professional singing jobs during the school's summer break. Having completed high school in the mid-'50s, and still hampered by her youth, she sang for the teenaged record-buying public. For a young woman of her age, One Hamburger to Go was more acceptable in the public eye than any of the more sophisticated songs that she would record in later years, such as Love for Sale.

The vocalist got her chance to sing the more adult songs when she recorded for Verve. In addition to Love for Sale, Harper recorded such songs as I Could Write a Book and Bewitched, Bothered, and Bewildered. Backing Harper on her self-titled first recording for Verve were pianist Oscar Peterson, drummer Alvin Stoller, guitarist Herb Ellis, and bassist Ray Brown. The vocalist later signed with RCA Victor, recording for the label for about four years and ending in 1963. Harper quit the business in 1966 after devoting more than 20 years to her singing career.

    Sons Of Soul

Sons of Soul is the 1993 third studio album by American R&B group Tony! Toni! TonÉ! The band originally recorded for the album at several studios in California, including Westlake Recording Studios and Paradise Recording Studio. When they became jaded with the various people frequenting those studios, Tony! Toni! TonÉ! moved their sessions to Caribbean Sound Basin in Trinidad, where they ultimately wrote and recorded most of the album.

Sons of Soul was produced entirely by the group, who worked with various session musicians and utilized both vintage and contemporary recording equipment. They intended to pay homage to their musical influences-classic soul artists of the 1960s and 1970s-and incorporated live instrumentation, funk, and hip-hop elements such as samples and scratches. Lead singer and bassist Raphael Wiggins handled most of the songwriting, which featured quirky, flirtatious lyrics.

Sons of Soul was originally released by Wing Records and Mercury Records on June 22, 1993, to widespread critical acclaim. The record's commercial success included a 43-week chart run on the Billboard 200 and a double platinum certification from the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA), for sales of at least two million copies. With its success, Tony! Toni! TonÉ! became one of the most popular R&B acts during the genre's commercial resurgence in the early 1990s. However, after an ill-fated tour, the band went on hiatus and pursued individual projects before reuniting in 1995.

The Beat Of My Heart (Speakers Corner)

The crooner Tony Bennett fulfilled a lifetime dream with this percussion jazz formation: At last he could go into the studio with the greatest drummers and top-notch jazz musicians and just swing to his heart's content.

Chico Hamilton, Jo Jones, Art Blakey, Candido and Sabu were responsible for the beat while Kai Winding, Herbie Mann, Nat Adderley and Al Cohn took care of the background among other things, and such great musicians as Milt Hinton and Eddie Safranski and John Pisano tied the whole thing together.

The 12 numbers, recorded in four sessions, were arranged by pianist Ralph Sharon in a laid-back and diversified manner and allowed Tony Bennett plenty of room to swing along serenely. Should one recommend a particular title? If the answer is yes, then the 'pure' numbers with Chico Hamilton. And the rest? Yes, the good old jazz evergreens - which, however, sound quite new here. Really one could practically recommend all of them!

To be sure: this is no LP for narrow-minded jazz purists, and certainly not for lovers of the soothing crooner - but why not one for both camps?

    About Speakers Corner

At the beginning of the 90s, in the early days of audiophile vinyl re-releases, the situation was fairly straightforward. Companies such as DCC, Mobile Fidelity, Classic Records and, of course, Speakers Corner all maintained a mutual, unwritten ethical code: we would only use analogue tapes to manufacture records.

During the course of the present vinyl hype, many others have jumped on the bandwagon in the hope of securing a corner of the market. Very often they are not so ethical and use every imaginable source to master from: CDs, LPs, digital files, MP3s - or employed existant tools from the 80s and 90s for manufacturing.

A digital delay is gladly used when cutting a lacquer disc because tape machines with an analogue delay have become quite rare and are therefore expensive. When cutting the lacquer, the audio signal is delayed by one LP revolution against the signal, which controls the cutter head, and for this a digital delay is very often employed. Of course, the resultant sound signal is completely digital and thus only as good as this delay.

We should like to emphasise that Speakers Corner Records on principle only uses the original master tape as the basis for the entirely analogue cutting of lacquer discs. In addition, the pressing tool is newly manufactured as a matter of principle. We have one digital recording in our catalogue (Alan Parsons / Eye In The Sky"), but even in this particular case we used the analogue tapes for cutting.

We only employ existing tools for manufacturing if an improved result is not forthcoming, e.g. the title Elvis Is Back, which was mastered by Steve Hoffman and Kevin Gray, or several titles from our Philips Classics series, which in any case Willem Makkee cut from the original masters at the Emil Berliner Studios in the 90s. It goes without saying that we only used the mother and that new tools were made for our production.

To put it in a nutshell: we can ensure you that our releases are free from any kind of digital effects - excluding the exception above - and that the lacquer discs are newly cut.

    Tony Joe White

Tony Joe White scored big with 1969's Polk Salad Annie from the album Black & White [MOVLP989] and he was having success as a songwriter too: Rainy Night In Georgia was a huge hit for Brook Benton in 1970.

His self-titled third album (1971) finds the Swamp Fox tempering his bluesy rockers with a handful of introspective, soul-dripping ballads and introducing horn and string arrangements for the first time. The addition of the Memphis Horns and other Muscle Shoals session men really worked well for the album. Many of the songs will remind the listener just how turbulent the cultural climate of the late '60s and early '70s was in the U.S. Songs like The Change, Black Panther Swamps and I Just Walked Away (the album's first single) are testament to the era.

The album was recorded over a two-week period in December 1970, in two different Memphis studios. Producing the album was none other than London-born Peter Asher, who had just produced James Taylor's early hits.

    The Tony Bennett/Bill Evans Album

One of the best albums of either's career, The Tony Bennett / Bill Evans Album spotlights two legends at work in equal partnership, tackling classics from
the Great American Songbook with masterful ease. A consistently enthusiastic and balanced musical partnership, Bennett and Evans shine both
individually and in tandem-Evans supporting Bennett with his steady left hand and then frequently diving into melodically inventive solos at the end of the
phrase. Recorded in intimate sessions at Fantasy Studios in Berkeley, CA, without even a bassist or drummer present, this album is the product of
meticulous personal involvement by the two giants of their genres. Bennett and Evans selected the tunes, worked out the arrangements semi-spontaneously, and picked the final takes to be used. The result was a perfect jazz/pop crossover worthy of many repeat listens. A must-have on vinyl for
any serious fan of either of these two greats.

    Acoustic Volume 2

Before the current barrage of seasoned punk rockers trying their hand at acoustic music, Joey Cape and Tony Sly, frontmen of Lagwagon and No Use For a Name, forged a path into the genre with their acclaimed 2004 split release, aptly titled Acoustic. The release featured acoustic arrangements of Lagwagon and NUFAN hits as well as a couple originals, and proved to be wildly popular with fans of their bands.

They didn't know it at the time, but the album served as a launching point for both Joey's and Tony's solo careers. Since they cut their teeth recording Acoustic, Tony and Joey have flourished as solo musicians. Over the past 8 years, their dedication and focus has progressively shifted toward solo work, resulting in the release of 2 solo albums each. The writing and recording process, not to mention countless tours and shows, have all served to hone their aptitude for acoustic music.

With a much greater command of the genre, the guys decided to revisit their original concept and release Acoustic Vol. 2. Once again Tony took 5 classic No Use For A Name songs and Joey selected 5 Lagwagon tracks, and transformed them into acoustic masterpieces. The guys also kept up tradition by each writing and recording brand new original tracks exclusively for the release. The product, Acoustic Vol. 2, is an album of reinvented classics, captured through a lens of complex instrumentation and subdued aesthetic. Joey's and Tony's mastery of the acoustic medium absolutely shines, breathing a completely new mood and feel into fan favorites and upping the ante on the second installment in the Acoustic series of releases. Vinyl includes digital download of full album.

Last year Tony and I collaborated with Jon Snodgrass and Brian Wahlstrom and released an LP called Scorpios. It was great fun, but the original split we did in 2004 for Fat Wreck Chords, entitled Acoustic has often been in our conversation over the years. We perform so many No Use For A Name and Lagwagon songs in our acoustic sets. After extensive touring together and almost 8 years since Acoustic, it seemed like a good time for a sequel. The new split, simply called Acoustic Volume 2, came together naturally and effortlessly. I have always liked the idea of an acoustic version of a band's song. It's nice to hear it stripped down. My feeling is, the song often rings more true and its original inspiration is honored. - Joey Cape

    Rain Crow

"With a deep, come-hither voice" (Mother Jones) and an "ability to turn that throbbing, thumping uh-uhh hazy guitar beat" (PopMatters), the "King of Swamp Rock" Tony Joe White will release his 19th studio album, Rain Crow, on Yep Roc Records. Recorded at his own studio and produced by his son, Jody White, Rain Crow summons recollections of long ago, when animals foretold the weather, tongue-talking worshippers proved their faith by handling snakes and a "bad wind" could drive a man to edge of insanity.

The nine-song set features new compositions White wrote over the past three years, including co-writes with his wife, Leann, and Billy Bob Thornton on "The Middle of Nowhere." Known for popularizing swamp music, he wrote gems like "Polk Salad Annie" and "Rainy Night in Georgia," and has had his songs performed by Elvis, Ray Charles, and Tina Turner.

    Canyon Songs

First time available on vinyl and celebrating the 10-year anniversary of what many fans and critics concede could be the crown jewel of Lucca's catalog, the emotive Canyon Songs, a touching 10-track tip of the cap to the legendary Laurel Canyon sound immortalized by master musicians including Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young, The Byrds, Buffalo Springfield, Joni Mitchell and Jackson Browne.

Lucca says. "Instead of diving back into the next album cycle, I've decided to reflect for a minute and promote the larger body of work, to shine more light on Tony Lucca, the songwriter." For Lucca, who was raised in a very large musical family in Detroit, a short stint doing the Hollywood shuffle/auditioning actor thing led him to recognize his true passion: music. A number of albums and EPs followed.

Lucca has made myriad television appearances on popular shows such as Parenthood, The Tonight Show, Last Call with Carson Daly, The All New Mickey Mouse Club, the Aaron Spelling-produced Malibu Shores, as well as small roles in some independent features. He was also the source oftabloid fodder during his years dating actress Keri Russell, as well as when he was a third place finisher on Season 2 of The Voice (which served as a springboard for a series of additional key career milestones, including the signing of a recording contract with Adam Levine's 222 Records, as well as high profile stints on tour with the likes of Maroon 5, Kelly Clarkson and Sara Bareilles, among countless others).

The vinyl edition of Canyon Songs will be remastered.

    Continued

Continued is the second album released by swamprocker Tony Joe White. Recorded at Monument Studios, Nashville and Lyn-Lou Studios, Memphis in 1969 and released the same year, the album contained the single Roosevelt And Ira Lee. It was produced by Billy Swan and engineered by Tommy Strong and Mort Thomasson.

The album contains the track Rainy Night In Georgia popularized by R&B vocalist Brook Benton in 1970. It reached #4 on the Pop Singles and #2 on the Adult Contemporary charts, respectively. The RIAA certified the single Gold for sales of one million copies. In 2004, it was ranked #498 on the List of Rolling Stone's 500 Greatest Songs of All Time. David Ruffin recorded a cover version of the song the same year as Benton, however, Motown for unknown reasons did not release the album.

The song has been covered by a number of musicians, including Ray Charles, Otis Rush, Randy Crawford, Tennessee Ernie Ford, Amos Garrett, Hank Williams, Jr., Shelby Lynne, John Holt, Nicky Thomas, by the duet of Conway Twitty and Sam Moore, Aaron Neville, and reggae band The Gladiators.

    I Wanna Be Around

Recorded during his peak era, Tony Bennetts I Wanna Be Around continues the crooners upward trajectory as he nestles into a superb batch of heartfelt ballads, softly swinging pop, and frisky bossa nova with the kind of charm, control, and coolness reserved for a legend. The follow-up to the singers breakthrough I Left My Heart In San Francisco (also available from Mobile Fidelity on 180g LP), this 1963 set is every bit its predecessors equal. Read: A bonafide vocal classic.

Half-speed mastered from the original master tapes, Mobile Fidelitys numbered limited-edition 180g LP presents Bennett in to-die-for sound. Amazingly, this landmark recording has lavished in the vaults over the years and longed for the restoration that meticulous engineering can bring. Gone is the veiled haze that hung over the orchestrations, artificial ceiling that held back the highs, and cloudiness that obscured the entire range of Bennetts vocals. And were not just talking about the inferior digital editions. Previously unheard degrees of warmth, expressiveness, and detailing are just some of the newly uncovered aspects of this majestic recording.

Pairing again with producer Ernie Altschuler and pianist Ralph Sharon, and adding the skills of expert arranger Marty Manning, Bennett navigates his way through heavenly pop territory, turning phrases that bridge myriad moods and feelingswistful, romantic, sentimental, longing, happy, autumnalwhile making listeners feel each and every word that seemingly tumble out of his mouth. Bennett fully invests himself in the performances. And part of the appeal is just how relaxed he remains, a trait that helped him propel both the title track and The Good Life into Top 20 hits.

Decades before hed join the likes of Bono for a Duets album that reprised some of the classic material found here, Bennett perfected on I Wanna Be Around a traditional vocal pop sound that is best described as the touch of velvet. His mellow singing spans from conversational to soaring, his timbre sensational and note-perfect. Bennett inhabits the lyrics as if every song were expressly written for his voice. Whats more, the arrangements remain sympathetic, neither over- nor underdone, resulting in a superb combination of color, style, sophistication, and suaveness.

Mobile Fidelitys collectible 180g LP resonates with standard-setting transparency, imaging, projection, smoothness, and dimensionality. Capturing a human voice remains the most difficult recording task. Suffice it to say that this LP will join the ranks of the very best recordings you own. And of course, the music is on the same elevated level as the sound.

I Left My Heart In San Francisco

Can there really be a definitive album from a singer whose voice is one of the most immediately recognized and internationally cherished, and whose command of songs is akin to the manner in which an able-bodied masseuse handles delicate muscle tissues? If so, then I Left My Heart In San Francisco is that record, the 1962 effort a turning point for the great Tony Bennett and an all-time pop standard. Winner of two Grammy Awards, the record contains Bennetts signature track as well as eleven other indelible classics.

Half-speed mastered from the original master tapes, Mobile Fidelitys numbered limited-edition 180g LP presents Bennett in the finest sound hes ever enjoyed. Previously unheard levels of warmth, expressiveness, and detailing are just some of the hallmarks of this terrific audiophile delight.

At the time of the albums sessions, Bennett found himself caught between the need to sing thin uptempo numbers in order to appease the marketplace and the desire to move beyond the jazzier material he tackled in the late 50s. Unwilling to compromise his will to sing ballads and swing, Bennett, along with producer Ernest Altschuler and arranger/pianist Ralph Sharon, found the perfect combination on I Left My Heart In San Francisco, replete with expansive orchestration, period echo, anthemic ballads, and lush pop arrangements that still leave plenty of room for intimacy and delicacy.

Theres little left to say about the timeless title track, amidst the most definitive songs ever recorded. Similarly, the closing The Best Is Yet to Come ranks equally high, with Bennetts rendition coming a full two years before Frank Sinatras version. Its no wonder why The Voice deemed Bennett his favorite singer. The proof is everywhere, whether on the brassy Rules of the Road, big-band bossa nova send-up of Cole Porters Love for Sale, tender Have I Told You Lately?, or the white-gloves treatment of the Broadway tune Once Upon a Time. Bennetts charismatic personality and refined singing ring true throughout, his burnished baritone as clear as spring water.

Now, hear this triumphant performance as if Bennett is singing to you on a private stage. Witness every breath, and experience the thrill of the singer holding a note for what seems like eternity on I'm Always Chasing Rainbows without flinching. Seldom, if ever, has a vocalists singing sounded so effortlessly natural and innate. Mobile Fidelitys 180g LP is simply unmatched in terms of sonics, spaciousness, and sensation.

Masterworks Broadway is proud to announce the release of the New Broadway Cast Recording of the most breathlessly anticipated theatrical event of the season, Hello, Dolly! starring the legendary Bette Midler.
