Too Dumb for Suicide: Tim Heidecker's Trump Songs

Vinyl Includes A Cover Of "Trump's Private Pilot" By Father John Misty

Well here it is. About one year in the making, all my Trump songs in one place. Most of these songs were written and recorded quickly, with the blood still boiling from whatever indignity or absurdity had popped up on my newsfeed that day. Certainly, Trump Tower was written in the rotten dawn, days after Trump's win. Let's hope I don't write any more of these, but I probably will. Thanks to Davin Wood for playing piano on Trump Tower, and thanks to Jonathan Rado, who produced and played on a good number of these (the ones you hear some of that beautiful tape hiss on mostly) - his tribute to Steve Nieve on Imperial Bedroom is particularly inspired. Thanks to Kane Ritchotte and Max Whipple for providing the best rhythm section a boy could ask for, and to Jordan Katz, Taylor Plenn and David Ralicke for laying down some sweet horns on Wilbur Ross. Thanks to Vic Berger for adding some backups to Sentencing Day and for usually being the first audience for these tunes. Thanks to Josh Tillman for surprising me with a tear-inducing cover of Trump's Private Pilot and for allowing us to include it here. Same goes to Andrew Bird for having me over, letting me use our live session and adding beautiful violin and harmony to Trump Talkin' Nukes.

Finally, NO thanks to Paul Simon who didn't let us include I Am A Cuck - you fucker.

    Life Is Full Of Possibilities

Vinyl comes with digital download card - remixs from the CD version included on download card too! Los Angeles resident Jimmy Tamborello records, releases and occasionally performs music under the name Dntel. In 2007, we at Sub Pop released the Dntel album Dumb Luck which included contributions from a whole raft of talented people too numerous to list here (a short version of that list would include members of Grizzly Bear, Rilo Kiley, Bright Eyes, and Arthur & Yu). And at the end of 2010, we released a pair of companion EPs by Dntel, entitled After Parties 1 and After Parties 2. Together these two EPs total eight tracks, all of them instrumental, and featuring (to the best of our knowledge) a list of guest contributors numbering exactly zero.

Back in 2001, we did not release the Dntel album Life Is Full of Possibilities. This album was originally released by the Plug Research label, and because we've always secretly wished we'd put it out back then, we're going to release an expanded, re-mastered version of the album to mark its ten-year anniversary.

    The Wind (Pre-Order)

The Wind is like an X-ray with a dark shadow that shouldn't be
    there and can't be ignored.

Recorded after Zevon was diagnosed in 2002 with inoperable lung cancer, it sounds
like the work of a guy who's still fighting, but also starting to wrap things up. Although
Zevon is best known for his poison-dart wit, he's always been a bit of a softie, too.

It's no surprise, then, that The Wind leans heavily on irony-free ballads such as
"She's Too Good for Me," "El Amor de mi Vida," and "Please Stay." But there's also a
dose of defiant blues ("Rub Me Raw") and plenty of dirty slide guitar, courtesy of Ry
Cooder and David Lindley. (Other guests include Bruce Springsteen, Don Henley,
Tom Petty, Jackson Browne, and Dwight Yoakam). If the lyrics generally lack the
literary precision of Zevon's best work, the songs take on greater weight given the
circumstance under which they were recorded. Heard in 1983, a party-hearty
anthem like "The Rest of the Night" would've sounded like yet another dumb
argument for hedonism, and "Numb as a Statue" might have come off as the selflacerating
joke of an alcoholic unable to deal with his emotions directly.

    However, on
The Wind, these songs are genuinely touching, the work of a guy deadened by
meds but unwilling to surrender to The Big Sleep just yet. A cover of Dylan's
"Knockin' on Heaven's Door" is the album's most direct comment on Zevon's fragile
health, but the most touching song is the album-closing acoustic ballad "Keep Me in
Your Heart," recorded by Zevon at home after the star-studded studio work was
complete. Clearly, Zevon survived one hell of a farewell party last night, but now it's
morning again and there's no telling what the rest of the day might bring.

    Chance

Manfred Mann's 1980 album is a strange mix of topical songwriting, progressive rock, and power pop -- from its opening seconds, the Earth Band is pressing serious messages and social commentary on their listenership amid swirling prog rock keyboards and catchy guitar hooks and choruses. The whole package is challenging in ways that should have put them on the cutting edge of rock music at the outset of that decade, but one suspects that Mann and company were too musically adept and sophisticated for their own good -- a little dumbing down and maybe a little less musicianship on display would have made them more accessible to the coming MTV generation. As it is, the album has held up remarkably well across a quarter century, however, even if it now seems an uncomfortably accurate warning of the way the world would go, in terms of politics and society, in the decades to come. It would also be three years before another Earth Band album was forthcoming, and that one would be steeped in world music sounds.
