StandardsFollowing the massive success of their 1998 album TNT, Tortoise delivered Standards in 2001. In and out of print over the past decade, Thrill Jockey is proud to present Standards on vinyl once again! Pressed on high quality virgin vinyl with the original heavy duty artworked inner sleeve and custom silk-screened PVC outer bag, this repress also includes a free download coupon.
The tunes on Standards are direct and immediate, yet they maintain the exploratory edge that has always characterized the group's output. The fusion of instrumental sounds (electric, acoustic and synthesized) is subtle and subversive while the group's fluency within the studio environment gives the finished work a quality that alternates between artifice and reality.
Whilst TNT was constructed in the studio using segments recorded, improvised or altered electronically, the Standards sessions began after a period of rehearsal and composition. The contrast, simply stated, is that the studio was used extensively as a compositional tool for TNT, whereas with Standards it was used predominantly as tool to realize and enhance the existing new compositions. The results then are in many ways reminiscent of Tortoise's unadorned self-titled debut.1. Seneca

Field NotesWil Blades Field Notes features guitarist Jeff Parker of Tortoise and drummer Simon Lott from New Orleans.
"He is the future to carry on the legend, the legacy of the organ, of the B-3." - Dr. Lonnie Smith
When Wil Blades sits down at the Hammond B3, count on inspired music to follow. The 34-year old, Chicago-native, Berkeley-based artist is a cornerstone organist of his generation-a modern voice in a lineage that includes giants like Richard "Groove" Holmes, Charles Earland and Brother Jack McDuff.
Having studied at the feet of the legendary Dr. Lonnie Smith and played alongside the likes of John Lee Hooker, Melvin Sparks and Idris Muhammad, Blades has absorbed the spirit of the masters. His extensive collaborations also reflect the high regard in which he's held by contemporaries, including Stanton Moore, Anders Osborne and Nicholas Payton.
Having released a critically acclaimed co-led duo album Shimmy with Medeski Martin & Wood drummer Billy Martin in 2012, Blades returns with a deeply soulful and sinuous nine-track effort, Field Notes, on which he's found fronting his own trio featuring Tortoise guitarist Jeff Parker and New Orleans' drummer Simon Lott.
From the recording's outset, it's easy to picture Blades fingers free-flowing across the keys, feet gliding along the bass pedals in a continuous dance. Syncopation drives songs like "Miller's Time" and "Addis" as the trio locks in tight to a relentless groove. But there's also a refined harmonic vision and deep affection for melody on tracks like "(I Can't Stand) The Whole Lott of You" and "Dewey" where Blades' Clavinet adds a fresh sonic dimension to the proceedings. Shades of psychedelia are weaved within "Parks 'N' Wreck," while a tip of the hat to vintage soul jazz balladry informs "Forgetful" and classic pop swing is at the heart of "I Get The Blues When It Rains."
In its sum, Field Notes is a masterful statement from an artist who's poised to keep the timeless sound of the Hammond B3 organ as vital and compelling today as it's ever been in the history of modern jazz and rock.1. Miller's Time

NoumenaSan Francisco's The Drift create music that Tortoise should have made. Taking their name to heart, The Drift do just that - from ambient noise and elegant guitar rock to mournful jazz ballads and stunted, down-tempo hip-hop - all with the subtle grace that's to be expected from veterans of the sound. Existing somewhere between Miles Davis's In A Silent Way and Tarentel's From Bone To Satellite, The Drift compose predestined soundtracks for everyday life - not only perfect for a night on the beach, but just as suitable for the long drive getting there. Their music is inescapably passionate, executed with just enough wide-eyed improvisation to sound eternally fresh.1.Gardening, Not Architecture

A Question Of Balance - First Time 180 Gram Audiophile Vinyl!
Mastered Impeccably By Joe Reagoso From The Original Threshold Records Tapes
A Question of Balance was another huge platinum plus # 1 smash for The Moody Blues and a stellar continuance of
their progressive rock sound for the fans of this legendary English quintet. Featuring the original award winning line-up
of Justin Hayward (lead vocals/guitars), John Lodge (lead vocals/bass), Ray Thomas (lead vocals/flutes), Ray Pinder (lead
vocals/keyboards) and Graeme Edge (drums/vocals), A Question of Balance is undoubtedly one of their biggest selling
albums and also one of the most revered offerings in their huge catalog.
Buoyed by the success of the huge hit single Question, their sixth album was filled with more melodic rockers
like the powerful Ray Thomas classic And the Tide Rushes In, John Lodge's workout on Tortoise and the Hare, plus the
legendary Mike Pinder masterpiece How Is It (We Are Here).
The wonderful release also features a fine array of songs from the lead vocalist and guitar master Justin Hayward
including the aforementioned smash hit Question as well as Dawning Is the Day and the steel guitar prog-rocker It's Up
The brilliant drum work and hip vocal styling of Graeme Edge are featured on the classic Don't You Feel Small as
well as the definitive album closer The Balance.
The beauty of this album is that you could always count on a classic listen from these five gentlemen of song.
Featuring Ray Thomas' striking vocals and flute delivery, Justin Hayward's and John Lodge's guitars and vocal acumen,
the magic of Ray Pinder on the keys and classic vocal, plus Graeme Edge's powerful drum and singing, A Question of
Balance became the album of choice for radio programmers in 1970. All in all, a hypnotic and spirited set from this very
important and much loved classic rock band.

AutomatonGossamer is Evan Reiner-the producer, guitarist, synthesizer scientist and
urban-spelunking field recorder whose full-length debut Automaton dissolves
the genre-breaking electronica of Autechre and Boards of Canada into a
bottomless sea of found sound and ambient atmosphere. It's less an album than
an environment all its own, or a journey into the unexplored. And whether it's
inspiring a trip deep into the discography of Steve Reich or into California's
beautifully desolate Ansel Adams Wilderness, it's that fearless spirit of
exploration that brought Automaton to life.
Reiner grew up in the L.A. neighborhood of Eagle Rock with a father telling war
stories about seeing Black Flag and the Germs play and with a set of cousins
who'd get him started listening to hip-hop. (Especially instrumentals by
iconoclastic producers like Premier, RZA and New York's crushing DITC crew,
Reiner remembers.) As he turned 16, he was playing guitar "religiously," he says,
as well as listening intently to Slayer and Cannibal Corpse on the way to
ferocious hardcore shows on the fringes of Los Angeles.
By the time he graduated high school, he was a hardcore kid with a heavy
grounding in hip-hop who'd developed so tremendously as a guitarist that he
was practicing notoriously formidable Django Reinhardt songs for fun. The
connection might not seem obvious, but it was there nonetheless-these were
three distinct musical forms equally dedicated to passion, individual technique
and total commitment to expression.
He won admission to the prestigious Berklee School of Music in Boston, where
his first semesters in the fall of 2009 were everything he'd hoped. But the more
he studied, the clearer it became that he'd need to strike out on his own: "So
many professors would tell their students what the right thing to do was in a
creative setting," he says now. "There is no right way."
He'd once used his computer just to help with his composition homework, but
now he was restless. So he began to focus on the potential of electronic music:
"I realized it was like having every component of a band at your fingertips," he
says. "It felt free and genuine with no distractions." He'd begun to make his own
field recordings, too, capturing the sounds of Boston at sunrise and stirring
them into his beat experiments. Intense study of movie sound and foley artistry,
like pouring sand across drum cymbals or using spent shells from a gun range
for percussion, gave him a whole new vocabulary, and he found further
inspiration in artists from Ai Weiwei to Maya Duren to Stanley Kubrick to Delia
Derbyshire-people who blew open the boundaries of their own disciplines.
Then in July 2013, he began to make what would become his first full-length
album as Gossamer. He'd rent an armful of microphones and hike to the tunnels
under Pasadena's eerie Devil's Gate Dam, site of suicides and barely-thwarted
summonings in the tradition of Aleister Crowley. ("The echo is crazy," he says.)
During a month in Japan, he recorded "terrifying trains" and cicadas and the
squeals of a rusting bicycle. He'd record himself smashing trash under a bridge
in downtown L.A., or knocking rebar against rotting wood 8,000 feet above sea
level in California's Ansel Adams Wilderness Area. Then he'd come
home-whether "home" at that particular moment was his own studio, a capsule
hotel in Japan, a friend's place in Boston or a temporary space in New York-and
"make accidents happen," he says, with recorders and samplers and guitar and
(this time) a stable of analog synthesizers.
The result was Gossamer's Automaton, a precise and gentle dreamscape of
experimental electronica, where the ambient atmosphere of Gas drifts across
the fractured beats of Autechre or Boards of Canada. It starts with its own
sunrise on "Thoughtform," where birdsong melts into ghostly vocals and waves
of synthesizer, and then shifts into the haunting "Print," which transplants the
sci-fi sensibilities of Vangelis to some desolate and wild new world. His "Okuma"
is like a Tortoise song that never touches solid ground, while tracks like and
recall the Brian Eno of Fourth World, somehow ancient and futuristic at
once. When the crickets start chirping on closer "-;- ", it's a signal that the
day-and the journey-are both coming to an end. It's might be his first album,
but it's also a first step towards something new.
"Automaton is me," Reiner explains. "It's my process. It's a symbol of having
accepted that there is a difference between being alone and being lonely. It's a
coping mechanism for the struggle to realize and balance what I am and am not
in control of in my life. It reminds me of playing Bioshock and watching Blade
Runner at the same time while naked in the jungle on another planet. It makes
me think of watching an old home video of myself and seeing Neptune right
outside my window. The list goes on and on-I could go forever."1. Thoughtform

OffshoreMentored by Daniel Lanois, Daniel Burton has been putting his project-oriented stamp on a variety of records the last ten years and it has all coalesced into this career-defining work. Offshore is one continuous piece, made up of six distinct songs. It's equally beautiful and noisy, composed though loose, akin to the late '80s/early '90s 4AD-laden world of shoegaze wash-rock like Cocteau Twins, My Bloody Valentine, Mark Hollis, their predecessor Peter Gabriel, or modern day saint William Basinski. In the Lanois/Eno tradition, Burton collected an all-star cast to flesh out his vision with members of Horace Pinker, Olo, Black Mountain, Windsor For The Derby, Unwed Sailor, and Tortoise.1.Land of Pale Saints

The album, featuring contributions from members of The High Llamas, Jaga Jazzist and Orwell, is especially inspired by British, French and Italian library music and soundtracks of the 60s and 70s and is focused primarily on orchestrated alternative
pop music sung in French and English (in addition to instrumental tracks). Alex plays most of the instruments on the album himself.1. La Chanson De Douche

Man-MadeTeenage Fanclub's Man-Made is part of the
Merge Records 25th anniversary reissue series.
Originally released in 2005, Man-Made is a classic Fanclub
record in tone and arrangement, and handsomely
demonstrates the "less is more" maxim--it is both airier and
more light of touch than it's immediate predecessors.
Teenage Fanclub made the record in Chicago with John
McEntire (Tortoise) at his Soma Electronic Music Studios.
Though McEntire's production is subtle, his unique
aesthetics are definitely apparent on Man-Made as odd

Last Ex is the new instrumental rock ensemble led by Simon Trottier and
Olivier Fairfield, long active in Quebec's experimental/punk scene, though
perhaps best known as core members of Timber Timbre, which spawned the
Last Ex project.
Constellation knew nothing of this back story when the label received the
Last Ex demos in spring 2014; we just heard a compelling, compact, coherent,
highly evocative instrumental album that kept worming its way into our ears.
By the tenth time someone in the office said Let's play that Last Ex stuff
again - and everyone enthusiastically agreed - it was time to contact the
band. This music belonged in the Constellation catalogue: an instrumental
rock album of superb compositional and melodic sensibility, balancing
minimalism and restraint with atmosphere and tone, bound by a refreshingly
original approach to production.
Last Ex makes ample use of the electric guitar as both lead instrument and
textural sound source, structuring most of the pieces around deliberate
melodic and contrapuntal deployments of Spaghetti Western twang, while
distressing, degrading and redeploying those sonics through Fairfield's analog
tape-based manipulations. Trottier takes on most of the guitar duties, with
Timbre Timber's Taylor Kirk contributing on a couple of tunes as well. Tight
bursts of trap set rhythms played by Fairfield, and usually captured with just a
couple of microphones, along with consistently excellent basslines laid down
by both Simon and Olivier, propel the album and make this anything but an
ambient listen. Strings appear on several pieces, courtesy Mika Posen (also of
Timber Timbre), in a wide range of textures and treatments.
With its combination of assured lyricism, cinematic guitars, dusky analog
atmospherics and taut percussion, this is a vivid, concise and expressive
instrumental album that sits snugly between fellow label acts Do Make Say
Think and Exhaust on the one hand, Hrsta, Tindersticks and Evangelista on the
other. Fans of early Trans Am, early/mid Tortoise, Calexico and (obviously)
Timbre Timber should appreciate this as a very satisfying grower of an album

TigerFace (Out Of Stock)Over three previous studio albums, pianist/sound-sculptor/songwriter Marco Benevento has set forth a vision for instrumental music that connects the dots between Explosions In The Sky and Tortoise on one side, Brian Eno and Brad Mehldau on the other. On his fourth studio recording, 'Tigerface', the 34-year old artist takes the next step forward in this evolution. Benevento paints his songs in a myriad of sonic colors, shimmering in acoustic piano, synths and analog keyboards. The tunes themselves conceptualized from seemingly every wisp of melody, hook and cadence that s ever tickled his ear. The album was recorded and mixed by Tom Biller (Silversun Pickups, Fiona Apple) and Bryce Goggin (Pavement, Akron/Family), while Benevento invited a stellar cast of musicians to help capture his ideas, including drummers Matt Chamberlain (Bill Frisell, Pearl Jam), John McEntire (Tortoise, The Sea & The Cake) and Andrew Barr (The Barr Brothers), bassists Dave Dreiwitz (Ween), Reed Mathis (Tea Leaf Green) and Mike Gordon (Phish), violinist Ali Helnwein (Traction Avenue Chamber Orchestra) and saxophonist Stuart Bogie (Antibalas, Superhuman Happiness). For the first time on record he uses vocals, inviting Kalmia Traver (Rubblebucket) to sing on the infectious dance rock rave-up 'Limbs Of A Pine' and the pastoral psych rock meditation 'This Is How It Goes'. Other standouts include the angelic Arcade Fire meets The Flaming Lips anthem 'Eagle Rock', the soaring garage psychadelia of 'Going West', the piano riff rock jaunt 'Escape Horse', and the happily lilting 'Fireworks', which bounces along like a long lost Italian folk song beamed down to him by ancestors from his father s homeland. As anybody who's seen Benevento perform live can attest, the pianist eyes closed, smile wide across his face, fingers free-flowing across the keys is a satellite to the muse. 'Tigerface', indeed, is the commitment to this idea; a record that rides the yes wave and in the process becomes a soundtrack for fellow travelers chasing the horizon ahead.1. Limbs Of A Pine

Tres Cabecas Loucuras (Out of Stock)Tres Cabeças Loucuras is the third album by Sao Paulo Underground. It's a very catchy, jazz + electronics album filled with sunny melodies, beats, noise, sounds and songs. The group formed around Rob Mazurek (cornet and electronics), a key player in the Chicago post rock/modern jazz scene, who has played with everyone from his own Exploding Star Orchestra and Chicago Underground projects to performing and/or recording with Tortoise, Jim O'Rourke, Pharoah Sanders, and many more and whose work reflects a keen interest in modern, interesting music, both from the jazz and rock traditions. He spent several years living in the Brazil and developing a music that reflected those experiences. While in Brazil he met the co-founder of the group, Mauricio Takara (drums, percussion, cavaquinho (the 'miniature guitar' of Brazil), electronics). Performing and recording their first album as a duo, the gravity of the ensemble pulled in two other musicians: Guilherme Granado (keyboards, electronics, samplers) and Richard Ribeiro (drums).
Each of the musicians is an example of the new vanguard in music; Rob in contemporary jazz and forward-looking rock and the 3 Brazilian musicians in updating and modernizing Brazilian musical forms. São Paulo Underground embodies a fascinating musical mixture of Sun Ra-esque cosmic noise and rhythms and phrasing from samba, maracatu, rock and free jazz traditions. The album has a huge, modern, laptop-laden, psychedelic sound which launches Brazil's Tropicalia' into a new, heavily electronic millennia. One of it's charms is that it is very clear and direct and accessible, but it's also utterly filled with sound! This is the rare, ground-breaking effort that can be absorbed and enjoyed effortlessly; it's just a corker!1. Jagoda's Dream
