Tower Of Power'
OVSE-MOV-1274xTower Of Power
Back To OaklandBack To Oakland is the fourth album by Bay Area based band Tower of Power, released in spring 1974. Tower of Power followed their self-titled gold album with (as said by many critics) an even better album.
This record had tougher, funkier and better-produced cuts, stronger vocals from Lenny Williams (who was more comfortable as their lead singer), and included an excellent ballad in Time Will Tell, and a rousing tempo in Don't Change Horses (In the Middle of a Stream). The Tower of Power horn section reaffirmed its reputation in both Soul and Pop circles.
Back To Oakland was voted by Modern Drummer Magazine as one of the most important recordings for drummers to listen to.1. Oakland Stroke...

OVSE-MOV-1244xTower Of Power
Bump CityBump City is the second album by the long living Bay Area based Soul Funk group Tower Of Power, released in 1972. Tower Of Power are best known for their funky Soul sound highlighted by a powerful horn section and precisely syncopated bass-guitar lines.
One of their biggest hits came off the album: You're Still A Young Man, recorded in Memphis and with Rick Stevens as lead vocalist. The production and arrangements were much improved over the debut album East Bay Grease from 1970, as was the engineering and overall technical quality. Their lines were crisper, the unison and ensemble passages much sharper, and they were beginning to round into shape.
The album was the first to make an impact in the band's early days, and paved the way to their mid Seventies success with subsequent albums like their self titled third album and Back To Oakland from 1974, both of which feature Lenny Williams on lead vocals.1. You Got To Funkifize

Tower Of PowerTower Of Power is the third album release for the Oakland-based Funk band Tower of Power. This is their most successful album to date, which was released in May 1973. The album peaked at No. 15 on the Billboard Top LPs chart and received a Gold record award for sales in excess of 500,000. The album spawned their most successful single, So Very Hard to Go. The single peaked at No. 17 on the Billboard Hot 100. Two other singles from the album also charted on the Billboard Hot 100: This Time It's Real and What Is Hip?.
It marked the debut of Lenny Williams being the lead vocalist (though Williams had a solo career prior to joining T.O.P., plus he co-penned the song You Strike My Main Nerve from the previous album Bump City [MOVLP1244]). Tower Of Power also introduced the world to saxophonist and future Saturday Night Live band leader, Lenny Pickett, who was the youngest member of the band at the time, replacing original lead sax player Skip Mesquite. Also joining the lineup was organist/keyboardist Chester Thompson and guitarist Bruce Conte, who replaced original guitarist Willie James Fulton.1. What Is Hip?

Together Forever: The Music City SessionsThe Two Things In One are a band that by rights should have been huge. The precociously talented, soulful quintet were popular in the early '70s in their native San Francisco Bay area, with the three local hit singles, Silly Song, Together Forever and Overdose, all sought after vinyl items today.
With an average age of 16 at the time these tracks were recorded for the legendary Music City label, this self-contained unit blended Stevie Wonder-like vocal chops and Meters/JB grooves with a rare ability for transforming unlikely covers like the Allman Brothers' Dreams and CSNY's Ohio into deeply funky workouts. During their time together, The Two Things In One recorded more than an album's worth of superb, mostly original material, all of which can now be heard on Together Forever: The Music City Sessions.
Members later played with Tower of Power, Maze, Sly & The Family Stone and the Two Things In One story is a fascinating rundown of what could have been. Havana MoonThe third Carlos Santana solo album marks a surprising turn toward 1950s rock & roll and Tex-Mex, with covers such as Bo Diddley's "Who Do You Love" and Chuck Berry's title song. The album features performances by Booker T & the MGs, Willie Nelson and the Fabulous Thunderbirds, and also Carlos' father Jose singing "Vereda Tropical" - a song Carlos had first heard when his father was serenading his mother following an argument.
Produced by veteran R&B producers Jerry Wexler and Barry Beckett, the album features an eclectic mix of sidemen, including Booker T. Jones of Booker T & the MG's, Willie Nelson, Jimmie Vaughan, Flaco JimÉnez, Stephen Kupka (of Tower Of Power) and many more.

WARB-ELE-1952xMarina and The Diamonds
Electra HeartMarina and The Diamonds second album, Electra Heart, is not so much a creative leap forward, more an Olympian pole-vault over the bar of talented-newcomer into the global amphitheater of a cultivated Classic.
Two years on from her top 5 debut The Family Jewels (300,000 copies sold), the self-styled avant-garde D.I.Y artist has detonated her own experimental past and landed feet first in the future with Electra Heart, a stunningly ambitious, seamless, cohesive and confident sonic pulsar spinning between electro-pop euphoria and come-down melancholia. The album is produced by a cache of old school and A-List producers: Dr Luke (Katy Perry) and Liam Howe (Sneaker Pimps) but mostly (9 out of 12 songs) Greg Kurstin (Lily Allen, Kylie) and Rick Nowels (Madonna, Stevie Nicks, Lykke Li). A hook-packed stunner with the sonic ambition of a one-woman Depeche Mode, her onetime theatrical vocals now effortlessly soar between spectral, commanding and towering power-pop, finding her vocal identity in an album about a loss of it.
Electra Heart is a thematic riot, a British Eccentric, 21st Century concept caper where the album title represents a series of female archetypes, not so much an alter-ego as a beautifully-constructed prism, through which Marina projects a series of meticulously-realized female characters as a foil for telling her story, the one about mismatched lovers.
Electra Heart marks the sophomore release from Marina and the Diamonds, aiming to make a big impact in the US as Marina breaks the mold with her Americana-ode to pop music and cultural stereotypes.1. Bubblegum Bitch

Fire From The Evening SunPHILM, the temperamental, highly gifted brainchild of Dave Lombardo certainly did not come to fruition
overnight. Years of life lessons and rhythmical adventures slowly molded and manipulated his latest creation for
the musical misfits of the world.
As a multi-genre labyrinth, PHILM resonates not only the individual symphonic personalities of its members, but
their uniquely agile bond in instrumentation as a whole.
Front-man Gerry Nestler, noted for his undeniable skill and rapport with his guitar, is best known for his work
with progmetallists, Civil Defiance. An impassioned vocalist, his musical journey has also found him gaining
much respect for his lyrical prowess. Nestler describes PHILMs music as, "Heavy but sensitive, powerful and
atmospheric." He further elaborated, saying ". The music of PHILM is channeled through the many different
influences of drum and bass, expressionism, and underground that is indigenous to the street, Nestler states.
There are many different things that Dave and I have been into that have contributed to the vision of PHILM.
Pancho's highly skilled bass playing, chordal color and shape have helped expand the overall sound
instrumentation and groove. Dave Lombardo's drumming goes without comparison.
Bassist, Pancho Tomaselli, a long-time member of funk rockers, War and most recently, Tower of Power is
sought after for his aggressively malleable, yet smooth way around his bass guitar. Drummer, Dave Lombardo,
is most widely known for his legendary work with a band he co-developed at the young age of 17, SLAYER. His
work with Mike Patton (Fantomas), John Zorn (Bladerunner), Grip Inc., and many others, leaves no room for
questioning his legendary status as one of the most skilled and innovative drummers in the world. Justifiably
typecast to the genre he helped trail-blaze, it is certainly a shock to Lombardo enthusiasts to see his infamous
drum set now scaled down to a four piece kit. But, the depth of his musical aptitude is much more than what
has come to be known as his signature sound. His prodigious skill and affinity for heavy, penetrating grooves is
oddly taken to another level in his work with this riveting trio. To quote Tomaselli, "It's like playing with the
seven, not four, horses of the Apocalypse behind you."
PHILMs music is a dense, unholy convergence of tones and discords." Lombardo states, " We tend to live on the
heavy side, but we also touch on haunting, desolate, ambient sounds.
These three innovative musicians have masterfully revived the concept of the Power Trio. Often improvised,
their live set can find their audience entranced by a raw, tonal journey that is both awe-inspiring and thrilling1. Train

Balls To PicassoThe key moment in Bruce's
evolution as a solo artist
unfolded following his
departure from Maiden in 1993, after which he
joined forces with guitarist and producer Roy Z for
1994's sophomore triumph Balls To Picasso. Backed
by Roy's noted Latino rock crew Tribe Of Gypsies, he
began to spread his compositional wings, edging
towards a noticeably heavier sound - despite,
rumour has it, pressure from Bruce's label to be more
radio-friendly - and flexing those metal muscles with
renewed vigour on the likes of "Cyclops," "1000
Points Of Light," the exhilarating :Laughing In The
Hiding Bush" and towering prog-tinged power ballad

undeniably affecting paean, to Bruce's feelings upon

Dunkirk: Original Motion Picture SoundtrackSoundtrack to acclaimed filmmaker Christopher Nolan's epic action thriller Dunkirk. The album features an original score by Academy-, Golden Globe-, and Grammy Award-winning composer Hans Zimmer, who previously collaborated with Nolan on the director's Interstellar, Inception, and The Dark Knight Trilogy.
It features a powerful and unique score unlike anything before produced by this formidable and inspired artistic pairing. Dunkirk is one of the greatest suspense stories of all time, and our film needed a score to reflect that and to propel the audience through a telling of this story that is more thriller than war film, explained Christopher Nolan. IT (Original Motion Picture Soundtrack)WaterTower Music today announced the release details of the Original Motion Picture Soundtrack for New Line Cinema's highly anticipated IT, the movie based on the iconic Stephen King novel of the same name which has been terrifying and thrilling readers for decades.
When children begin to disappear in the town of Derry, Maine, a group of young kids are faced with their biggest fears when they square off against an evil clown named Pennywise, whose history of murder and violence dates back for centuries.
Golden Globe® and Emmy® nominee Benjamin Wallfisch (A Cure for Wellness, Lights Out, Annabelle: Creation), widely acknowledged as one of Hollywood's most exciting and innovative composers, has assembled a thrillingly unsettling 38-track Original Soundtrack for IT with a palpable spirit of suspense, adventure and anarchy, using powerful themes, a full symphony orchestra and children's choir.
"Every now and again, you come across a movie where the storytelling is so powerful, the subtext so visceral, the synergy between director, narrative and actors so palpable, that as a composer you can feel the music being energized by something so much bigger than what's just on the screen," Wallfisch said. "Creating a score to tell the story of a shapeshifting antagonist of unimaginable evil that can only be defeated when a group of individuals come together as one, required metamorphic themes, extremes of sonic irreverence and heartfelt quiet, and, most importantly, a musical language that strived to be constantly informed by the profound emotional truth driving the heartbeat of the filmmaking. To collaborate with Andy Muschietti on IT was to be invited into a thrilling, deeply inspiring and richly creative dynamic space. It was a true honor, and, as a lifelong Stephen King fan, a great privilege."1. Every 27 Years

Juke Joint At The Edge Of The WorldJuke Joint At The Edge Of The World is a record that reflects the freedom my bandmates and I have found playing together in the last few years. Some of the places we play are like the old juke joints where people dance and shout - from these people and places we've found the energy we need to be free to shake the music up. Now, when we improvise we know it's going to take us to a new and better musical place. Time listening and working together has given us that. The result is that this record has more of a "live in the studio" feel to it. It's also rooted more in the soul and R&B dance music I grew up listening to and playing. Less thinking and more playing. Less analyzing and more fun.
When I wrote these new songs, I inhabited various characters and let them speak from their worlds about delusions and fantasy ("Plan B"), poverty, humor and strength ("Pot Holes on Main Street"), memories of my youth and class/race segregation ("Garbage Man"). I dreamed the song "Mali Katra" (what language is that?) after seeing a large group of vultures roosting on a cell tower on one of my walks. This got me thinking about the spirits and powers that roam the world and run in the background of our lives. The artwork for the cover reminds me of the absurdity and wildness of all that. I thought about calling the record Rex Comes Home. Anyway, I wouldn't take that call from that particular cell tower.
I could go on and on but suffice it to say the music is freer this time and the songs will take you places that make you dream and dance. Enjoy!

The Handwriting Is On The WallOn Vinyl For The First Time In Over 30 Years!
Released in 1979, The Handwriting Is on the Wall boasted some high-powered funk backdrops, but for the most part the album finds Peebles taking on a set of straight-ahead soul numbers in which she was usually either taking a man away from some woman who didn't know how to hold on to him, or was warning the ladies why they should stay away from her significant other. Peebles is a tower of defiant sass on I Didn't Take Your Man and You've Got the Papers (I've Got the Man), she leaves no doubt about why she's dating outside her age group on Old Man with Young Ideas, and Bip Bam Thank You Mam alerts listeners to the consequences of not pleasing Ms. Peebles. Willie Mitchell pairs Peebles up with some full-bodied soul and funk arrangements for these songs, and while unfortunately most of the great Hi Rhythm Section were unavailable for this record, the players on board do fine work, even if the groove lacks the ineffable touch of Peebles' finest work. The Handwriting Is on the Wall was Ann Peebles' last album for Hi, and the last new set she would release until 1988, but it captures one of the great R&B singers of the 1970s doing what she does best, and here she bows out on a high point.1. Pictures At An ExhibitionReleased in 1972, this classical music meets 70's progressive rock performance was recorded live during a concert at Newcastle's City Hall. The band performs the legendary Mussorgsky piano cycle with all the power, energy and authority of a '70s rock power trio; giving the legendary classical piece a contemporary, unique feel.
In the Seventies, numerous rock and pop groups attempted to produce a maximum of sound on the stage with a minimum of manpower. The majority of them failed miserably in their struggles to master the Moog synthesizer with its 28 million varieties of sound but not so Keith Emerson, Greg Lake and Carl Palmer! Their legendary rock version of Mussorgskys piano cycle, which was set down for posterity during a live concert in Newcastles City Hall, towers above all other recordings of the kind. Perhaps their success is due to the fact that the trio avoided a Late Romantic powerful sound and steered away from the temptations of creating electronic, grandiose sound effects. Their vocals, guitar and drums produced a highly original and contemporary yet soulful rendering.
Even if you aren't into British rock-pop, you should still listen to this album. Those who choose to ignore it dont know what they are missing!1. Promenade

Terry Riley: In C (Pure Pleasure)If ever there were a popular work of minimalism, one that stated its purpose so clearly it could not be mistaken, Terry Riley's legendary composition In C is the one. It is a work that needs no explanation for its pulsing sequences of pitch all centering around the 53 phases of no duration played on the note and its performances have been numerous--even if there have been relatively few recordings of it. The Bang on a Can all-stars have recorded perhaps the most innovative version of the work thus far, after Riley's own, which was issued in the 1960s on Columbia's long defunct Odyssey label. This version reads minimalism as popular music and popular music as, finally, classical. The Bang on a Can version is outrageously wonderful. This single repeated note, meditatively engaged and then played upon in modulation, is taken by Bang on a Can and torn apart, with gritty, urban vision, rock & roll energy, and pure New York street smarts. Using a wide array of instruments (from piano, vibes, glockenspiel, cello, Wu man's pipa, clarinet, mandolin, soprano saxophone, electric guitar, marimba, chimes, and bass) for 45 minutes, this mind-flexing composition is moved through the sequence of all these instrumentalists, each coloring it just a bit, moving it a tad further outside and into the future, the dynamics shift subtly and change, direction becomes fluid, and the drama becomes white-knuckle tense after such a meditative beginning and then releases again.
This is the creation of language, tonal, timbral, and spatial. There is an architecture at work in this version that erects small towers of meaning in sound and piles them atop each other until a sonic Tower of Babel is finally fully erected. The pulse never stops; it never disengages no matter which instrument or group of instruments enters or leaves the fray. It is there, constant, always being born and always dying and being transformed, reincarnated as some other sound, some other phrase, but always identified by the pulse. This is more hypnotic than any rock & roll, and more powerful than any Beethoven symphony is taken in with openness. This is music -- ultimately made by a truly gifted and disciplined ensemble that share a singularly optimistic vision for modern music -- that can, and will, change your life.

About Pure Pleasure
At the beginning of the 90s, in the early days of audiophile vinyl re-releases, the situation was fairly straightforward. Companies such as DCC, Mobile Fidelity, Classic Records and, of course, Pure Pleasure all maintained a mutual, unwritten ethical code: we would only use analogue tapes to manufacture records.
During the course of the present vinyl hype, many others have jumped on the bandwagon in the hope of securing a corner of the market. Very often they are not so ethical and use every imaginable source to master from: CDs, LPs, digital files, MP3s - or employed existent tools from the 80s and 90s for manufacturing.
A digital delay is gladly used when cutting a lacquer disc because tape machines with an analogue delay have become quite rare and are therefore expensive. When cutting the lacquer, the audio signal is delayed by one LP revolution against the signal, which controls the cutter head, and for this a digital delay is very often employed. Of course, the resultant sound signal is completely digital and thus only as good as this delay.
We should like to emphasize that Pure Pleasure Records on principle only uses the original master tape as the basis for the entirely analogue cutting of lacquer discs. In addition, the pressing tool is newly manufactured as a matter of principle.
We only employ existing tools for manufacturing if an improved result is not forthcoming, e.g. the title Elvis Is Back, which was mastered by Steve Hoffman and Kevin Gray, or several titles from our Philips Classics series, which in any case Willem Makkee cut from the original masters at the Emil Berliner Studios in the 90s. It goes without saying that we only used the mother and that new tools were made for our production.
To put it in a nutshell: we can ensure you that our releases are free from any kind of digital effects and that the lacquer discs are newly cut.

DigTaking up from where iconic bands like Deep Purple and Bad Company have left off, Heaven & Earth is on a mission to resurrect the sanctity of classic rock in its purest, most accessible form on their third studio album titled Dig. Dig was produced by Dave Jenkins-who's turned the knobs for everyone from Metallica to Tower of Power-and features special guests Howard Leese (Heart, Paul Rodgers), Richie Sambora (Bon Jovi) and David Paich (Toto).
Heaven & Earth-guitarist Stuart Smith, singer Joe Retta, bassist Chuck Wright, drummer Richie Onori and keyboardist Arlan Schierbaum-fuse elements of hard rock, blues and bits of classical with bravado and a razor-sharp focus.
As the band's founder and visionary, Smith says about Dig, "I feel that with the crafting of the songs on this album, the incredible band we've put together, especially with powerhouse vocalist Joe Retta and the unwavering support of Quarto Valley Records' President, Bruce Quarto, we really have a shot at getting Heaven & Earth the attention it deserves. This album is by far, the best thing I have ever done in my life!"
The British-born guitarist spent the 70's bending strings with numerous groups before he distinguished himself by making the acquaintance of Deep Purple's Ritchie Blackmore, who mentored the up-and-coming musician. "I'm probably one of the few people in the world who grew up with a poster of someone on their wall, ended up meeting them, becoming friends with them, and getting mentored by them," Smith notes. At the urging of Blackmore, Smith migrated to Los Angeles where the seeds for Heaven & Earth were planted. The band released two critically acclaimed albums-Heaven & Earth Featuring Stuart Smith (1994) and Windows to the World (2000)-which helped advance Smith's musical vision. Now, with Dig complete, the guitarist says Heaven & Earth is a true band, an energized collective of like-minded musicians who are excited at bringing its unique, celestial brand of rock to audiences all over the world in 2013. "All the pieces are in place," he explains with graceful candor. "We're ready to make this our year."
All the backing tracks on Dig were recorded at Ocean Studios in Burbank, California, and all the overdubs were done at the band's own Wine Cellar Studios in Woodland Hills, California. To further refine the record's sonic reach, Jenkins used a Closed Loop Analog Signal Processor (CLASP), a device that integrates real analog tape recording into digital tools like Pro Tools to create a warm and vintage sound. Both Van Halen and Aerosmith enlisted a CLASP on their most recent albums.1. Victorious

Love From With The DeadWith the Dead - Love From With the Dead
Doom is all around us. The optimism of a new millennium has steadily disintegrated. The light at the end of the tunnel turned out to be a burning tower block and the powers-that-be are dancing in the smouldering ruins. Humanity is eating itself and we're all terminally fucked. As a result, it makes perfect sense that the emergence of British doom metal mavens With The Dead would strike a dissonant chord with so many people. Formed in 2014 by former Cathedral/Napalm Death frontman and Rise Above Records boss Lee Dorrian and ex-Electric Wizard/Ramesses bassisit/guitarist Tim Bagshaw, the band coalesced in a monetary burst of spontaneity and shared fury, resulting in the release of their eponymous debut album in 2015: one of that year's most widely acclaimed releases and a welcome shot in the arm for fans of merciless, unrelenting sonic despair.
"We were very happy with the way the first album was received," says Lee. "To be honest, there were no real expectations with the first LP. It's hard to explain. We just got together and did it. There was no big anticipation. We knew it was going to be well received by certain people, just because of the sheer heaviness of it, but we didn't think it would get the reaction it did. It sold really well and got a good response all around. It came together so strangely and so fast. We hadn't gone round, sweating in the clubs, although we've all done that previously. The record came out on Rise Above so it was easy and there were no demands from anyone except ourselves. The important thing is, we didn't want it to be seen as some novelty project band."
Hell-bent on staking a further claim to be doom metal's most intense and remorseless practitioners, With The Dead have now completed work on their second album, Love From With The Dead. Comprising tracks recorded during two separate sessions with celebrated studio guru Jaime Gomez Arellano, the new material represents the first fruits of the band's recently retooled line-up. Joining Lee and Tim are bassist Leo Smee and drummer Alex Thomas, who replaces the departed Mark Greening. As Lee explains, the band's new incarnation generated great chemistry from the start.
"Tim came over from New Jersey, where he still lives, and we booked four nights' rehearsals with Leo and Alex to see how it was going to work. Literally, on the first night, they had the whole set nailed within three or four hours. It sounded better than ever before, too. So the next three nights were pointless and we didn't need them, so we spent the time going over ideas for new songs and by the end we had four brand new songs. It was crazy. Then we thought 'While Tim's over, let's go in the studio and record them ' Luckily, Gomez was free and we went over to his studio and recorded the four new tracks, they're the last four on the album, and it was all done just like that. The other three tracks were recorded nearly a year later, again with just one night's rehearsal. It was all done super quick."
For those who flinched at the sheer, unforgiving brutality of With The Dead's first record, the songs on Love From With The Dead are liable to cause major emotional trauma. Darker, denser, more despondent and sickeningly heavy in numerous senses of the word, this is an album that re-establishes doom as a genre that embraces the extreme and not just some cosy, nostalgic reimagining of the early '70s. From opener Isolation's slithering howl of torment and the crushing, schizophrenic barrage of Egyptian Tomb through to the expansive, drone-driven horrors of the closing CV1 (a mournful lament to Lee Dorrian's home city of Coventry that features a guest appearance by home-town comrade and electro-noise maverick Russell Haswell), Love From With The Dead grimly extinguishes the light of hope and hammers home the hatred and futility that plagues our brief and brittle lives.
"The thinking was that the first LP was meant to be the heaviest we could possibly make, but then what do you next?" Lee muses. "Well, the only thing you can do is make the next one even heavier. So that was the ambition and the intention, to make it even more crushing. But to be able to do that you have to be crushed yourself. This last couple of years have been quite soul-destroying. There's been a lot of personal shit going on, and during this whole process so much fucking bad shit has happened in my personal life and other people's personal lives. Everything you hear on this LP, the angst is very real. I've never felt so disillusioned with life and the world around me, not since the first Cathedral album!"
Irrefutable evidence that With The Dead are a formidable and substantial proposition, the quartet's second album could hardly provide a more apposite soundtrack to the deeply fucked up and irrevocably dysfunctional state of the world in 2017. Both a fine example of the simple, savage power of the riff and an authentic outpouring of anger, bitterness, bile and vivid existential dread, it is the living, breathing, screaming embodiment of heaviness itself. Cometh the hour, cometh the bringers of doom
"I'm 50 next year and you're supposed to mellow out when you get older, but why?" Lee asks. "I don't feel like mellowing out. The world's getting worse, the atmosphere is getting heavier, people treat each other like shit and there's so much negativity, how are you supposed to chill out when all that's going on? I'm in a privileged position to be able to be in a band like this, so why fuck around? The band's called With The Dead and it's a doom band, why would you want to mellow out? It's got to be pure nihilism or nothing."

MUSD-MFSL-021xSisters Of Mercy
FloodlandGoth-Rock Milestone Defined by Majestic Soundscapes and Ethereal Melodies
Meat Loaf Producer Jim Steinman and New York Choral Society Among Collaborators on Vast-Reaching LP
Lush, Huge, Balanced: LP Mastered on Mobile Fidelitys World-Renowned Mastering System and Pressed at RTI
1987 Effort Includes Insurmountably Influential Opus The Corrosion
The Sisters of Mercy emerged from a brief hiatus and lineup overhaul in spectacularly grand fashion on Floodland, an epic album that stands as the groups commercial breakthrough as well as one of the periods monumental productions. Having witnessed his bandmates leave, singer Andrew Eldritch recruited bassist Patricia Morrison, utilized a groundbreaking drum machine, and hooked up with Meat Loaf collaborator Jim Steinman to attain a glorious, bombastic, and irrepressible marriage of gothic rock and sumptuous balladry.
Mastered on Mobile Fidelitys world-renowned mastering system and pressed at RTI, this Silver Label LP improves the records splendid dynamic contrasts, low-end thrust, expansive dimensionality, and moody atmospherics. Steinmans unforgettable sonic contributions finally receive proper due in the form of towering choruses and operatic heft. The groups signature epic The Corrosion, described by Eldritch as a narrative about power in the face of misery, sounds downright staggering, with an awe-inspiring performance by the New York Chorale Society and blooming classicism.
Throughout, the Sisters of Mercy traverse myriad styles in breaking down goth-rock conventions. As on the bands noisier debut First and Last and Always, also available on Silver Series LP, brooding emotions, nocturnal episodes, and dim sentiments gloss over the songwriting. Yet there's a colossal amplification of evocative spirituality, delicate accents and anthemic riffs that combine with funky drum-machine beats and visceral tension to yield music that dares listeners not to dance and/or lift their hands skyward.
Rhythms play as large a role as the leaders trademark stentorian vocals, with thundering grooves and crashing percussion illuminating incisive lyrics and industrial-tinted scenery. Whether felt via the dramatic waves of Lucretia My Reflection, balladic sweep of 1959, or charging protest of Dominion/Mother Russia, Floodland is a touchstone, topped off by iconic cover art that fits in with todays vampire-obsessed society as well as it did upon release in 1987.

The Precious Prize Of GravityAfter four years, this husband-and-wife punk rock power couple of Giovanna Cacciola and Agostino Tilotta reunite with bassist Matthew Taylor and drummer Alexis Fleisig (Girls Against Boys) to unleash their third and most thunderous album. Recorded as always with long-time collaborator Steve Albini. Tilotta wraps a hundred notes per minute around the towering, sturdy rhythm section while Cacciola's poetic lyrics and smoky melodies alternately recall Grace Slick and PJ Harvey. Lyrically, this is their darkest album yet, but the songs are more complex, with a driving, X-inspired cow punk vibe. HealFrom the first bars of HEAL, the exhilarating melodic stomp of 'Goshen '97' puts you right into Tim Showalter's fervent
teenage mindset. We find him in his family's basement den in Goshen, IN, feeling alienated but even at 15 years old,
believing in the alchemy and power of music to heal your troubles. "The record is called HEAL, but it's not a soft, gentle
healing, it's like scream therapy, a command, because I ripped out my subconscious, looked through it, and saw the worst
parts. And that's how I got better." HEAL embodies that feeling of catharsis and rebirth, desperation and euphoria,
confusion and clarity. It is deeply personal and unwittingly anthemic.
Showalter was on tour, walking home on a mild autumn night in Malmo, Sweden, when he first felt the weight of the
personal crisis that would ignite him to write HEAL. "It was a culmination of pressure," Showalter recalls. "My marriage
was suffering, I'd released a record I was disappointed in, I didn't like how I looked or acted so I'd gone on tour, I was
gone about two years!I didn't take time to think about failure, but I knew I was going deeper and deeper I was thinking,
I have this life, but it's not my life,I haven't done it right "
When Showalter returned, he wrote 30 songs in three weeks, a process that proved difficult, but cathartic and at times
invigorating.Previous Strand Of Oaks records were more skeletal, raw examples of folk-rooted Americana with occasional
rock and electronic currents, that have now come to the fore.HEAL is a bold new beginning, with a thrilling full-tilt sound
that draws on Showalter's love of '70s, '80s and '90s rock and pop, with the singer and guitarist playing the intense
Crucial to HEAL's sound was the man who Showalter chose to mix the record, the stellar alt-rock icon John Congleton.
Showalter also re-connected with Ben Vehorn, synth expert and studio engineer extraordinaire, and drummer Steve
Clements, who provides HEAL's thunderous ,sinewy drive. Songs such as 'Shut In','Plymouth' and'Woke Up To The Light'
have a classic construction and mood, recalling '70s power-pop/ballads and the yearning ache of Big Star'slate, great Chris
Bell. Many of the songs on HEAL reveal an electronic undercarriage and towering drums that push the album's wired
dynamic to its stretching point, especially on'For Me',which expertly bridges the album's twin decades of influences. And
if 'Goshen '97'recalls the molten energy of Dinosaur Jr, that actually is J Mascis on lead guitar. Despite the initials, the
album's smoldering 7-minute epic 'JM' is not a Mascis tribute, but to the late Jason Molina, about having his music as
comfort no matter how bad things get.
Which brings usto another crisis, this time much more serious and immediate. HEAL was scheduled for mixing on Dec.
26, 2013.Driving on the freeway Christmas Day, Showalter and his wife were involved in a car accident with a semi-truck,
and were fortunate to walk away with their lives. Showalter suffered a, "pretty severe," head trauma, "which affected me
much more than Irealized at the time."Fearing delays, Showalter didn't let Congelton know about it,so the mixing session
went ahead. "Being on the verge of death, and my thoughts being so closely tied to that, changed the album's direction,"
Showalter claims. "Together, we pushed it toward a much more cathartic sound that forces the listener to where I was at
that exact moment, somewhere between almost dying and being absolutely fearless."
HEAL is not just a saviour for its creator, but for anyone who needs reminding of music's ability to heal, or just thrill.
Showalter is taking out a full band to play, and finally, the kid who wanted to be a rock star at 15 might get his chance.
Finally, he and Strand Of Oaks have much to celebrate.1. Goshen '97
