    Indigo Girls

After a limited self-financed release, this self-titled album can be seen as the proper debut by Indigo Girls. The album immediately boosted them up the charts, earning them a Grammy back in 1989, eventually reaching platinum in 1991. Featuring the complementing songwriting of Emily Saliers and Amy Ray and guest vocals by R.E.M.'s Michael Stipe, the album is a showcase for jangling folk-rock, beautiful balladry and poetic lyrics.

In the wake of the new acoustic song-based styles of Suzanne Vega, Tracy Chapman and 10,000 Maniacs, Indigo Girls would manage to garner respectable mainstream success and maintain their rabid core following throughout the three decades after this release.

    Acoustic Soul

India Arie's Acoustic Soul is just as advertised: grooving soul music with an acoustic bent. Arie herself plays guitar, supplemented by strings (instead of synthesizers) and drums (instead of drum machines). The first single, Video, is a calm, confident ode to self-love, comparing the dreadlocked, petite Arie to the average girl in a video. Arie is indeed anything but average: her debut marks the auspicious return of the black female singer-songwriter, in the vein of Me'Shell Ndegeocello, Tracy Chapman, and Dionne Farris. If you like their music, with thoughtful lyrics and layers of instrumentation, you'll love this album. Video is fabulous, but other high points include Ready for Love, a lament that smolders before slowly building to a crescendo, with tinkling piano, guitar, and cello swelling beneath the vocal. Strength, Courage, and Wisdom is an optimistic anthem that'll have you clapping your hands and swaying from side to side, and the best track on the album, Simple, is a straightforward love song with a pulsating beat. Acoustic Soul may not be full of radio-friendly tracks, but every track is strong, and the disc improves each time you press play. --Courtney Kemp

    What Is This Heart?

Arriving two years after the haunting, glacial neo-soul of 2012's much-loved Total Loss, Tom Krell - under
the moniker How To Dress Well - will release his third album "What Is This Heart?". Since the
release of his debut Love Remains in 2010, Krell has crafted a reputation as one of America's most original,
focused and beguiling young songwriters and "What Is This Heart?" nds How To Dress Well at the top of
    his game.

Merging ever surprising production choices and aesthetic detail with a sensual but sincere R&B inuence
and a deep, grounded emotionality, "What Is This Heart?" is the next step in Tom Krell's unique and
searching artistic trajectory and asserts him as an artist of great courage, taste and craft. Its twelve songs
were conceived and written during months of grueling international touring and realized with producer
Rodaidh McDonald (Vampire Weekend, The xx, Savages, Adele) in Berlin, and the result is an ambitious
21st century pop album that takes inuence from artists as varied as Prince, Lou Reed, Burial and Tracy
    Chapman.

More condent, daring and open than any How to Dress Well release thus far, "What Is This Heart?" is at
once Krell's most deeply personal work and also his most universal in resonance. It is a record that delves
into the core of the psyche and touches on themes of isolation, loss and existential anguish, but in the end
nds redemption in the innite possibilities of love. The songs tackle ideas of anxiety, fear, lack of control,
nightmare, death, pain, pleasure, pride and shame, trust and commitment with an honesty and intimacy
that is rare in the modern age.

Which Side Are You On? (Out Of Stock)

Singer/songwriter/guitarist Ani DiFranco releases her eagerly awaited album Which Side Are You On? on the Grammy-winning artists own Righteous Babe Records. The release marks DiFrancos first studio album in more than three years. The collection features 11 new songs alongside a radically reworked rendition of the classic title song, famously popularized by the one and only Pete Seeger nearly five decades ago, but no less relevant today.

Backing DiFranco is a remarkably diverse line-up of stellar musicians, including members of her own crack touring band as well as such guest players as Ivan and Cyril Neville (of New Orleans first family of funk and R&B, The Neville Brothers), avant-saxophonist Skerik (Pearl Jam, R.E.M., Bonnie Raitt, The Meters), acclaimed singer/songwriter Anaïs Mitchell, guitarist Adam Levy (Norah Jones, Tracy Chapman, Amos Lee), and a host of New Orleans-based horn players known for their work in such outfits as Galactic, Bonerama, and The Rebirth Brass Band.

The newly recorded version of Which Side Are You On? is a funk-fueled epic, incorporating not just Anis band, but Pete Seeger himself on banjo and vocals alongside The Rivertown Kids, a Hudson Valley-based childrens chorus, and The Roots of Music Marching Crusaders, a brass band consisting of students from The Roots of Music, a music education program for at-risk middle-school students in New Orleans. DiFranco contributed her own straight-from-the headlines verses to the song and has used it to close her own live shows ever since. The album represents an extraordinary snapshot of DiFrancos own life as well her sense of where the country stands at this particular moment in time.

    Otherness (Out Of Stock)

It takes chutzpah to name your debut album after the seismic Eddie Kendricks song Girl You Need A Change Of Mind, a seven-minute soul classic with an extended breakdown and build-up that made it one of the earliest disco records. But the lanky Brit Adam Bainbridge had a firm grip on his influences for 2012's World, You Need A Change Of Mind, an album that touched not only on disco, but also on '80s boogie and R&B, Frankie Knuckles-indebted house music, D.C. go-go, and even The Replacements (with a dance remake of Swingin' Party).

Bainbridge doubles down on that '80s sound for Otherness. New feelings we begin again / Old endings we begin anew, he sings in World Restart, which from its compressed drum machine to its honking saxophone sounds like a lost track from 30 years ago. Midway through, he's joined by fast-rising R&B singer Kelela, who sounds like one of the Mary Jane Girls circa 1983's All Night Long. But the feelings behind the song revive those staid sounds and make them sound refreshed.

From there, Kindness pulls from various earmarks of that era, be it the go-go bells that power This Is Not About Us or the elegant piano that flows through I'll Be Back. Rapper M.anifest joins in for 8th Wonder, name-checking Tracy Chapman's Fast Car in his verse. And when Kelela returns in With You, the track at one point peels back to a synthesized breath, a brief homage to Art Of Noise's classic single, Moments In Love.

Much like his musical compatriot (and fellow Brit) DevontÉ Hynes did on Blood Orange's sublime Cupid Deluxe, Bainbridge draws on assists from friends. Beyond the album highlights with Kelela, the sputtering backbeat, rubbery slap-bass line and church organ of Who Do You Love? gets a big lift from Swedish singer Robyn, who infuses the song with her pop effervescence. Hynes himself lends a hand in Why Don't You Love Me, which evolves from a heartbreaking ballad to sensuous R&B to great effect. It hints that Kindness might change and advance yet again.
