    Tranquilizers

Includes 8 page booklet Of Original Dog Bite Art

In a release inspired by the smooth rhythms of the region's
past, Atlanta-based Dog Bite offers more music medicine
in the form of Tranquilizers. The sophomore release
transcends the reverie state of Velvet Changes in pursuit
of a darker, more full-bodied experience. Tranquilizers
migrates into a dreamy sonic realm enveloped in its own
    soulful inuence.

Frontman Phil Jones found his extensive listening to iconic
R&B musicians such as Otis Redding and Isaac Hayes to
be the original muse for the album. In its formation it
began as a soul record; however, at its core the release
remains grounded in Dog Bite's beloved shoegaze
    landscapes.

With the support of Woody Shortridge on bass and Tak
Takemura on drums, Dog Bite purposefully evades
sedation through its blend of smoky textures across
divergent genres. Being an album submerged between
the differences of classic funk and rock music, it is Jones'
customary croon that weaves a common mesh in the
    record's diverse artistry

It's that mix of thrash, death metal and SHRED that make Exmortus so absolutely irresistible! We're so sure you'll feel the same way that we've decided to premiere to the world the title track from their forthcoming album Slave To The Sword. If you liked "Immortality Made Flesh" - also on the album and part of an exclusive 7 with a Judas Priest cover on the B-side - you'll most definitely like this one too. 2014 is the year that Exmortus are going to make their imprint upon the metal scene at large; they're just too damned good not to, and with Prosthetic Records backing them this time around they'll have the support they deserve.

Here's a quote from drummer Mario Moreno:

2013 has been a pretty exciting year for EXMORTUS. We recorded a killer album with engineer/ producer Zack Ohren, got amazing album art done by Phil Lawvere, signed a record deal with Prosthetic Records and now we're finally announcing a release date for our upcoming album "Slave to the Sword". Pretty damn exciting right!? The year isnt over and we're already stoked on 2014. Our relationship with Prosthetic is still fresh but things are already off to a great start. Be sure to pick up a copy of Slave to the Sword in February online, in stores or on our upcoming North American Tour with Dark Tranquility and Omnium Gatherum starting February 1st in Atlanta, GA at The Masquerade. See you all soon! \m/

There's Honey In The Soil So We Wait For The Till

Harm WÜlf is the bedroom musical entity of G. Hirsch, known for his moving lyrical and vocal contributions in Philadelphia's Blacklisted. Harm WÜlf's debut album is a collection of songs which touch upon the dark and rustic themes of solitude and aging disappointment. Inspired by a wide range of artists: from the tranquil resonance of Low, rhythmic acoustic strumming of Strength Through Joy and the ascending power of Angels Of Light, to the insular, grotesque Americana of Cormac McCarthy and Flannery O'connor. Most times sparse and austere, others apocalyptically orchestrated, Harm WÜlf has the sound of something long since missing.

    Time Well

Inspired by the harsh, rural landscapes of Indiana which they call home, CLOAKROOM drifts through a range of emotions and styles on their sophomore full-length Time Well. Fuzzy and depressive. Expressive and expansive. An amalgam of doomy stoner rock, psychedelic shoegaze, and moody, pop-influenced, sonic abrasion, Time Well is 10 songs and 60+ minutes of crunchy, guitar-driven atmosphere and downbeat rhythms layered atop deceptively sweet and tranquil melodies. At times crushingly heavy, others gorgeously contemplative, CLOAKROOM write music with purpose and intent; to dissolve from this world into an infinite blur.

    Beyond Ugly

Domino is proud to present the third album, Beyond Ugly, from the Bristol, UK duo of Malachai.

Beyond Ugly is the last panel in the band's Ugly triptych and that it was completed at all came as a
shock to all concerned, least of all the group. After the conclusion of the campaign for their sophomore
album, Return To The Ugly Side, members Gee Ealey and Scott Hendy drifted apart with no definitive
plans to take up arms together. It was a chance meeting in Bristol that drew the two back into one
another's orbit and to the realization that there was some unfinished monkey business. The duo reengaged slowly, simply working up a track at a time, more for the cathartic act of creating good music
rather than the artificial construct of "delivering an album." Lo and behold, the creative process built
an inertia of its own and Beyond Ugly began to take shape.

And what a fine shape it is... Beyond Ugly recaptures the sonic stew of debut album, The Ugly Side
Of Love, a potent of brew of post-summer of love and some good ol' Bristol-fashion psychedelic
comedown. However, there's a healthy dose of renewed restlessness and anger emanating from Ealey
that permeates the album thanks to some spirited vocal performances, from the anthemic and vengeful
soliloquy of "Sweet Flower" to the civilly disobedient "I Deserve To No."

Of course, Malachai isn't a one-man show. As Rakim had Eric B... Hendy, the duo's musical director, has
truly outdone his past efforts and provides a sturdy musical platform from which Rev. Ealey delivers his
sermons, whether the occasion calls for an exotic sturm-und-clang ("I Deserve To No") or a genteel softshoe waltz ("Hear It Comes").

Malachai have always enjoyed // suffered the curse of being a "musician's band." Geoff Barrow of
Portishead originally released The Ugly Side Of Love on his Invada imprint before Domino swooped
in and there was no bigger proselytizer of Malachai's prowess than Sergio Pizzorno of Kasabian and
both take their support a step further with guest appearances on "Dragons Ball" and "The Love"
respectively. Additionally, "Segs" Jennings, bassist from punk legends The Ruts joins the fray on
    "Sweet Flower."

The album concludes with a montage of hallucinations from across the band's discography before what
can be best described as the ominous twilight tranquility of "End." Is this really where the Malachai
story ends? As shown by the creative triumph of Beyond Ugly, sometimes it's best not to plan at all and
just let it happen. We'll do our best to let you know when it does.

    Then It All Came Down

Then It All Came Down is J.R. Robinson s second long-form composition as Wrekmeister Harmonies. Employing an enormous ensemble of some of Chicago s best talents in the metal and experimental communities, including Wrest (Leviathan), Ryley Walker, and members of Indian, Corrections House, Twilight, Yakuza, Anatomy of Habit, Come, Mind Over Mirrors, and Bloodiest, Robinson has created a work that is equally gorgeous and menacing. The CD edition also includes 2013 s You ve Always Meant So Much To Me (on CD for the first time), bringing the total running time to over 73 minutes. Few artists have perfected the nuances of beauty as well as annihilation, and Robinson s mastery of both sides of the spectrum makes his a unique voice in the field of doom. J.R. Robinson perceives life as a long, gradual process of decay. Lightness fades into darkness, while innocence succumbs to the evils of modern society. His music reflects not only this worldview but his emotional response to it. Then It All Came Down is an exploration of that existential deterioration and an attempt at attaining a deeper understanding of its process. Then It All Came Down opens with a low, soft drone, creeping in almost imperceptibly. Bells chime as more tonal voices emerge from the ether, Walker s acoustic guitar echoing in the abyssal soundscape. Several women sing as sirens: Beautiful Sun. The piece is inspired by and takes its name from an essay written by Truman Capote following his interview with Manson-associate Bobby Beausoleil (which translates as beautiful sun ), whose dangerous spirit and embodiment of occult ideals offer an extreme example of the light into dark transition the piece explores. As the soft drones and angelic voices are replaced with threatening rumbles of distortion and low cackles courtesy of Wrest, an overwhelming sense of unease permeates the piece s atmosphere, only a harbinger of what is to come. When the piece does explode into crushing howls and heavy doom, all semblance of tranquility and stillness, the light, the peace, is exterminated. Then It All Came Down was debuted at the Bohemian National Cemetery in Chicago under a full moon in July of 2013, the first in a continuing yearly series called Beyond The Gate. The series continued in 2014 with a debut of another new Wrekmeister composition which will be released in early 2015. Wrekmeister Harmonies will continue to bring large-scale productions involving a rotating cast of guest musicians to unconventional performance spaces throughout 2014-15, and has a future collaboration planned with The Body. An essay by Robinson about Beausoleil s influence on Charles Manson and his ideological lineage from Alastair Crowley is available for deeper insights into Robinson s fascination with the controversial cult figure.

    On The Water (Awaiting Repress)

Future Islands' romantic synth sound scales new heights with On the Water, the Baltimore trio's most ambitious and fully realized statement yet. Built around a song cycle exploring love, loss, and memory, their latest album finds the band continuing to deliver pounding rhythms, swelling melodies, and undeniable hooks - but finding new ways to probe inner space and tug at hearts. Convening in March 2011 in Elizabeth City, NC's historic, waterfront Andrew S. Sanders House, vocalist Samuel T. Herring, bassist William Cashion, and keyboardist Gerrit Welmers lived together in a space that served as both studio and sleeping quarters. The band used this tranquil retreat to refine their most reflective and mature batch of songs to date, adding new material in the process. What emerged is a lush yet visceral album about two parallel journeys--one physical and one psychological. On the Water's narrator offers enough detail that their story feels personal, yet open enough that any listener can inhabit each twist and emotional pang as their own. LP version includes full color artworked inner sleeve.

We Have The Facts And We're Voting Yes

    Newly Reissued 180 Gram Version

Like the also-great Idaho or Wheat, to file Death Cab for Cutie under the mellow-pop umbrella that shelters tranquil chamber outfits such as Red House Painters, Low, or (post-dance-pop) Talk Talk would do them a gross, miscalculated service. While they're no strangers to the tickling knelling of guitars searching out the extra space found in laggard tempos, that predilection only encompasses a fourth of Death Cab for Cutie's output (like on Title Track and Little Fury Bugs). Heck, they're not even remotely quiet for half of We Have the Facts and We're Voting Yes -- the best and brightest LP of their three fine albums to date. Ben Gibbard has turned into a sublime composer, using melodies sparingly but with splendid tunefulness, as all four players marinate his writing with delicately plucked, picked, and pulled arpeggios, ringing chords, and non-obvious atmosphere building. Verily, the slow, broody stuff is but a change of pace; it's when the volume doubles (if only occasionally crashes), when the band shows potency, that We Have the Facts starts flying, soaring with exigency beyond even the threatening storm clouds from the last flight plan, 1998's Something About Airplanes. Lowell, MA and Company Calls are perfect examples: drummer Nathan Good actually gets to punish his snare and toms, the other three dig in with him, and the words indie pop suddenly sounds fresh and alive, with real aggressive, post-dream pop guitar popscapes. Loud and soft, or most of all both, and plenty of points in between, DCFC write and record finished songs that emote, that do more than merely fill a slot in a form in a preconceived genre. In short, they're superb. And getting greater.

    Von

The heaps of praise during 2000 surrounding 1999's Ágætis Byrjun brought surprisingly little attention to Sigur Rós' first record, released in 1997. Remaining available only through the band's Icelandic label, it took some effort to obtain, but those who did get a copy probably found it to be just as adventurous as Agætis. Though darker and more fractured than the string-laden nooks of the follow-up, it's just as sprawling and outright bombastic. It's remarkable that such a young band would be this experimental at this stage in their lifespan, but the sheer breadth gets to be an albatross. Poking fun at '70s prog rock is just as easy as shooting at cement gargoyles on a suburban rooftop, especially when you're an indie kid or a fan of post-rock. But Sigur Rós makes Yes look like the Minutemen. Whittled down to 40 minutes, Von would be considerably more effective than it already is. As a mood setter, the 10-minute opening track really takes about three minutes to do what it needs, and a few other spots seem to drag on for the sake of sucking time. That doesn't prevent Von from being impressive, veering from Gavin Bryars-style aquatic minimalism to My Bloody Valentine-style dream pop. Varying states of isolationist ambience run throughout, whether evoking unrest or tranquil rest. You can practically envision a stray headboard floating through the Sinking of the Titanic-type passages, and the lush Myrkur comes from a planet where MBV's Kevin Shields and Kitchens of Distinction's Julian Swales are accorded the level or worship that Earth gives to Hendrix and Clapton. And then there's that voice, one of the most distinctly unintelligible voices since the Cocteau Twins' Liz Fraser. Boy? Girl? One would be hard-pressed to guess without liner notes. Based on pure sound, Von is just as much of a treat as the acclaimed follow-up.

Unique Collaboration Between John Williams And Yo-yo Ma

Available On Vinyl For The First Time!

Yo-Yo Ma Plays the Music of John Williams is a 2002 album of John Williams compositions performed by Yo-Yo Ma and the Recording Arts Orchestra of Los Angeles.

For an instrument with such rich expressive powers, the cello has long suffered from a shortage of great concertos. Leave it to John Williams, the composer best known for his popular, emotionally charged scores to Star Wars, ET, and many other blockbuster movies, to ride to the rescue with a new Cello Concerto, an intense, expressive, and rhythmically vital offering tailor-made for Yo-Yo Ma's dexterous touch.

Like the composer's Violin Concerto, this one is imbued with impressionistic textures and colors, but there's also a hard-driving, modern edge. Call it 21st-century Ravel. Williams wrote the concerto with Ma in mind, and it's a test of even Ma's formidable technique. It also boasts powerful orchestral writing, especially for the percussion and brass.

Three other premieres are included on the album as well. The Elegy for Cello and Orchestra is a lyrical and atmospheric tone poem, with shades of FaurÉ at every turn of phrase. The expressionistic Three Pieces for Solo Cello, though, seem more akin to Benjamin Britten's solo cello suites in their abstract, concentrated intensity. Heartwood is another tender and sensitive reverie. It gradually builds in strength but ends as it began, with a whisper of tranquil serenity.

Ma's virtuosity is dazzling, and his engagement with the music is typically deep. He makes clear that Williams's music isn't just for the movies; indeed, with his new concerto, Williams has done the cello a great service.

Yo-Yo Ma Plays the Music of John Williams celebrates its 15th anniversary this year and is now finally available on vinyl for the first time. A 4-page booklet with an extensive story written by John Williams is included.

FRKWYS Vol. 11 - Contos De Lisboa

For the the eleventh volume of FRKWYS, an unrestricted series pairing contemporary
artists with their influential predecessors, gifted guitar squire Steve Gunn meets roving,
radiating legend Mike Cooper in Lisbon, Portugal.

Sharing their vision over lengthy living room guitar sessions and evenings of cold wine
in Fado taverns, Gunn and Cooper created Cantos de Lisboa, an album with variable
vernacular shades and musical forms from Portugal's antiquity.

Cantos means "corner" in Portuguese, as well as "chant" or "song" (this latter meaning
evolved from the Latin antecedent referring to stanzas of verse in poetry). For two artists
whose roots lie in the country blues and its subverted offshoots, the proverbial "corner"
is actually home, the undisturbed spot where music can flourish.

A tranquil interlude for these two travellers to create off-guard improvisations in their
shared style of deconstructed guitar music, Cantos de Lisboa is a curious detail in the
periphery of their snapshot of Portugal.

In his fifty-year-plus career, Cooper's global ventures have transported his music to
exotic locales parallel to Lisbon. 2004's Rayon Hula musically translated the patterned
flora of aloha shirts (Cooper's signature garment) as looped samples of famed Hawaiian
vibraphone player Arthur Lyman for an avant vivified form of exotica.

Rayon Hula signaled Cooper's vital re-emergence as a dexterous alchemist of slide
guitar. Cooper's discography is colored with similar instances of casually conceptual,
improvisatory guitar music, including his 1970 masterpiece Trout Steel (an album Gunn
recalls in Cantos de Lisboa's liner notes as shaping his own ambitions and music).
For his part, Gunn's path to Portugal was compelled by his kinship to Cooper and
his ilk's experimentation with guitar-picked country blues and 70s British folk. Gunn's
extracurricular immersion in free jazz and psychedelia, no doubt influenced by his
Philadelphia upbringing and surroundings, ensures his playing never grits or grids and
    always soars to ecstatic heights.

These musical emblems were gracefully memorialized on Gunn's celebrated Time
Off (Paradise of Bachelors, 2013) and across a substantial catalog of solo, duo and
ensemble work that resembles that of a veteran player more than a young guitar
    slinger.

On Cantos de Lisboa, Gunn and Cooper take emotive cues from Fado, the regional
music of Portugal, which is in close plaintive spirit to the blues. A melancholy seeps into
the music, while steering a wide berth from any bummer notes or pastiche. Cooper's
sparse effects toolkit and stately, gliding cadences are nimbly employed, while Gunn's
ashen voice and steady strum lend an intensely organic feel to the album's improvisatory
    portraits.

The latter half of Cantos de Lisboa echoes the "saudade" theme as referenced in
the blissful opening track, Cooper's howl spiriting the Portuguese word that translates
roughly into "loss" or "longing." Saudade is said to be the core feature of Fado music. In
Cantos de Lisboa, Saudade becomes a spirit inhabiting the album's corners, but never
    disrupting the musicians' collaborative evocations.

In the hands of these two limitless guitarists, Cantos de Lisboa convenes in an abstract,
almost field recorded take on lap-steel and American Primitive guitar styles. For the
brief idyll, Gunn and Cooper's collaboration is remarkably rich, marking their passage
through Portugal not just as a time to revel in an ancient city, but a time for focused
    collaboration and creative consonance.

    Stuck Here On Snakes Way

Stuck Here On Snakes Way' was the debut OG album featuring Jukka on vocals and it was released in April 2007.

'Snakes Way' is an endless road dealing with the choices in our existence and the temptation within the mind of every soul on this third planet of ours, and unfortunately, so many people are stuck... The band didn't get stuck with the album and the 'Snakes Way' conducted the band to do tours with Dark Tranquility, Caliban, and Entombed, spiced with a large amount of Finnish headlining gigs.

Brahms - Piano Concerto 1 (Speakers Corner)

Brahms originally intended his Piano Concerto No. 1 as a symphony and he extensively reworked his ideas before setting down the work in the form as we know it today. The composer's original intentions still shimmer through however, for the work goes far beyond mere concertante playing and a display of virtuoso brilliance by the soloist. The first movement in particular, with its relentless, threatening main theme, embodies Brahms's dramatic symphonic writing and even a conciliatory secondary theme offers no relief for it too must give way to the heavy, fateful initial theme.

The passionate and grandiose opening movement is followed by an Adagio full of tranquillity and quiet devotion; the solemn atmosphere is taken to exalted heights by the soloist and orchestra only to fade out pianissimo.
Although the forceful, belligerent Finale occasionally conjures up the dark powers of the first movement, the work ends in a confident and cheerful vein.
It is amazing how the sheer presence of the emotions in this composition have been captured on the present DECCA recording from 1962. This is not only true of the gripping interpretation but also of the recording itself which remains transparent and brilliant throughout.

    • London Symphony Orchestra

    • George Szell (conductor)

Recording: May/ June 1962 at Kingsway Hall, London by Kenneth E. Wilkinson
    Production: John Culshaw

    About Speakers Corner

At the beginning of the 90s, in the early days of audiophile vinyl re-releases, the situation was fairly straightforward. Companies such as DCC, Mobile Fidelity, Classic Records and, of course, Speakers Corner all maintained a mutual, unwritten ethical code: we would only use analogue tapes to manufacture records.

During the course of the present vinyl hype, many others have jumped on the bandwagon in the hope of securing a corner of the market. Very often they are not so ethical and use every imaginable source to master from: CDs, LPs, digital files, MP3s - or employed existant tools from the 80s and 90s for manufacturing.

A digital delay is gladly used when cutting a lacquer disc because tape machines with an analogue delay have become quite rare and are therefore expensive. When cutting the lacquer, the audio signal is delayed by one LP revolution against the signal, which controls the cutter head, and for this a digital delay is very often employed. Of course, the resultant sound signal is completely digital and thus only as good as this delay.

We should like to emphasise that Speakers Corner Records on principle only uses the original master tape as the basis for the entirely analogue cutting of lacquer discs. In addition, the pressing tool is newly manufactured as a matter of principle. We have one digital recording in our catalogue (Alan Parsons / Eye In The Sky"), but even in this particular case we used the analogue tapes for cutting.

We only employ existing tools for manufacturing if an improved result is not forthcoming, e.g. the title Elvis Is Back, which was mastered by Steve Hoffman and Kevin Gray, or several titles from our Philips Classics series, which in any case Willem Makkee cut from the original masters at the Emil Berliner Studios in the 90s. It goes without saying that we only used the mother and that new tools were made for our production.

To put it in a nutshell: we can ensure you that our releases are free from any kind of digital effects - excluding the exception above - and that the lacquer discs are newly cut.

    White Light

After playing in various teenage groups, Gene Clark was offered a place in the sprawling New Christy Minstrels in late 1963. He stayed long enough to contribute to two albums, Merry Christmas and Land Of Giants, before returning to Los Angeles, where he teamed up with Jim (Roger) McGuinn and David Crosby in the Jet Set. This fledgling trio evolved into the Byrds. At that point Clark was the leading songwriter in the group and contributed significantly to their first two albums.

As founding member of folk-rock pioneers the Byrds, Gene Clark had emerged as a uniquely gifted singer/songwriter and master of the minor key melancholy ballad. His departure from the group in 1966 was met with critical anticipation and commercial indifference. Tiring of the Hollywood fast lane by 1969, Gene and new wife Carlie moved up to Mendocino on the Northern California coast where the tranquility, pastoral beauty and laid back lifestyle of the coastal community appealed to his country boy roots. It inspired a body of songs unlike anything Gene had composed before. Their stark simplicity and stripped down arrangements, acoustic guitar, harmonica and voice, evidence a deeper insight into life and an overall optimism rarely found in his previous body of work.

The resulting album, White Light, produced by renown guitarist Jesse Ed Davis, remains one of Gene's most accessible and much-loved recordings among fans and critics, topping several domestic Best Album of the Year lists and being voted Album of the Year by rock critics in the Netherlands. Songs like For A Spanish Guitar, With Tomorrow and Where My Love Lies Asleep are delicately evocative while the title song draws on Gene's appreciation for country music. One In A Hundred harkens back to his finest Byrds compositions.

Buoyed by his new surroundings, friendships, marriage, a feeling of contentment in his rural retreat and the imminent birth of his first child, White Light reveals singer/songwriter Gene Clark at the top of his game. Rolling Stone declared the folk-based album a fresh and innovative look at what came before in a new framework. One of the most interesting and exciting records of 1971. Relive that excitement on this Sundazed edition! Mastered directly from the original A&M analog session tapes on high-definition vinyl.

On Urban Hymns, the Verve eloquently explore the loud/soft extremes of their dynamic range, tastefully incorporating retro sensibilities with sweet-sounding hooks that yield a tranquil, pastoral beauty. From the full string section of the smash hit Bitter Sweet Symphony to the beautifully cool Sonnet and the country influenced ballad, The Drugs Don't Work, Urban Hymns is full of sweeping, grandiose soundscapes that make for a rich album and undoubtedly the best of the band's career.

Rachmaninoff - Concerto No. 2 (Speakers Corner)

The Second Piano Concerto represents Rachmaninoff's escape from a crisis lasting several years during which he experienced one catastrophe after another. At the suggestion of his psychiatrist, who had prophesied that he would write wonderful music, he turned once again to the work - and it brought him his greatest success to that date. Although the piano writing demands enormous technical dexterity, the composer was apparently not solely aiming at producing a virtuosic showpiece, since the piano part clings snugly to the orchestra like an accompaniment for long stretches, although it does triumph powerfully here and there for good measure.

Once again, Byron Janis - whose brilliant interpretations of Rachmaninoff's repertory have influenced whole generations of pianists - has made a benchmark recording in which he alagamates tremendous energy with great tranquility. He revels in the late-Romantic ecstatic harmonies, dazzles us with his transparent presentation of the internal structures, and displays great vigour in the weighty themes. The emotional middle movement is also glorious in that Janis enjoys to the full the interplay of passion and reverie with expansive chords and dark-hued tonalities.

    Nero In Metastasi

Two and-a-half decades after their conception, CRIPPLE BASTARDS reign as Italy's most hostile and aggressive musical unit in existence, and are ready to prove it all over again with their newly completed debut LP for Relapse, the monstrous Nero In Metastasi. Packing some of their most dense and metallic destruction into eighteen new tracks harnessed under the thirty-seven minute mark, the album was recorded at the infamous Studio Fredman in Gothenburg, Sweden with producer Fredrik Nordström (Arch Enemy, At The Gates, Dark Tranquillity). While retaining the riotous old-school hatecore attributes they've carried forth since formation, yet elevating their delivery to put them on par with the most cutting-edge bands in the grindcore genre, Nero In Metastasi is the next major movement in CRIPPLE BASTARDS' steadfast campaign of extreme auditory revolution.

    Brothers and Sisters

1973 Affair Introduces Southern Rock to Popular Parlance

Dickey Betts Leads Group Through Mellower Country Rock, Pairs With Pianist Chuck Leavell

Chart-Topping Album Includes Smash "Ramblin' Man" and Favorites "Jessica" and "Southbound"

Brothers and Sisters is significant for myriad reasons. It's the first album the Allman Brothers Band made in its entirety after Duane Allman's death. It also came after bassist Berry Oakley's spookily similar passing, yet he appears on two of the songs. The 1973 set also marks the emergence of guitarist Dickey Betts as the collective's leader. And pianist Chuck Leavell's arrival. But for than anything else, the record remains noteworthy for its incredible soulfulness and completeness.

Having stayed at the top of the Billboard charts for five consecutive weeks, Brothers and Sisters constitutes the Allman Brothers Band's biggest commercial triumph. Given the circumstances surrounding its creation, such an accomplishment hardly seemed possible. Fresh from licking their wounds over Duane's tragic motorcycle accident, the group experienced dÉjà vu when Oakley met the same fate just blocks away from where his mate was killed. Rather than collapse, the Allman Brothers Band tightened up and mellowed out, inviting Leavell to join instead of recruiting another guitarist.

What the sextet gets in return for its troubles is music that marks the concrete beginnings of a form that soon become known as Southern rock. Leavell and Betts exchange notes as if the pair has been trading ideas since they were children. Slide guitars still tread over greasy grooves, yet the Allman Brothers Band digs deeper into country dirt, parlaying a twang anchored by Betts' picking and abetted by Gregg's organic, shot-of-blues vocals. The laidback vibe manifests on the signature "Ramblin' Man," a hit evocative of the record's breezy melodies and friendly interplay.

The cover art further reveals the Allman Brothers Band's mindset. Golden, tranquil, idyllic, Southern, loving: It's a paradise-longing view that would soon come crashing down in the group's lives but one that, for the duration and existence of Brothers and Sisters, remains gloriously undisturbed.
