    The Trio

    Pressed On 180-Gram Vinyl

Oscar Peterson was a Canadian jazz pianist and composer. He was called the Maharaja of the keyboard by Duke Ellington, but simply O.P. by his friends. He released over 200 recordings, won eight Grammy Awards, and received numerous other awards and honors. He is considered one of the greatest jazz pianists and played thousands of concerts worldwide in a career lasting more than 60 years.

Peterson made numerous duo performances and recordings with bassists Ray Brown, Sam Jones, and Irving Ashby, Herb Ellis, and Barney Kessel, pianists Count Basie, Herbie Hancock, Benny Green, and Oliver Jones, trumpeters Clark Terry and Louis Armstrong, and many other important jazz players.

Peterson redefined the jazz trio by bringing the musicianship of all three members to the highest level. Together with Joe Pass (guitar) and Niels-Henning Ørsted Pedersen (bass), Oscar Peterson (piano) called the trio in his own words, 'the most stimulating' and productive setting for public performances as well as in studio recordings.

The Trio is a 1973 live recording at the London House in Chicago. Winner of the 1975 Grammy Award for Best Jazz Performance By A Group, this energetic live set is the highlight of all three storied careers.

In his Allmusic review, critic Scott Yanow complimented the playing of Pass and Pedersen but wrote the reason to acquire this set is for the remarkable Oscar Peterson. The pianist brilliantly investigates several jazz styles... Peterson really flourished during his years with Norman Granz's Pablo label, and this was one of his finest recordings of the period.

    Portrait In Jazz (Awaiting Repress)

Bill Evans made two albums in 1959 that had a profound impact on jazz history Kind of Blue with Miles Davis and this debut disc by Evans first permanent working unit. The fluidity and interdependence these three developed forever changed the face of the piano trio, introducing new notions of shading, balance, and poetic lyricism, not to mention the superhuman virtuosity of the tragically short-lived bassist Scott LaFaro.

The Bill Evans Album (Speakers Corner)

The global corporation Columbia recorded and released only two LPs with pianist Bill Evans. A meagre result when one considers the numerous concerts that the new trio undertook between 1969 and 1974. Together with Eddie Gomez, a phenomenon on the bass, and drummer Marty Mortell, the three established a firm - and ever better - trio. Evans became interested in the possibilities offered by the Fender Rhodes piano and used it for the first time in The Bill Evans Album.

The LP is remarkable in that only Evans's own compositions were recorded - three previously recorded pieces and four brand-new works. Of particular note is the melancholy Two Lonely People, Evans's musical interpretation of a poem by Carol Hall. Sugar Plum and T.T.T. were to remain in his repertoire right up until his very last recordings. Unusual but very commendable because it begins with an ad hoc introductory improvisation is the electric piano version of Evans's most well-known composition - Waltz For Debby.

The excellent technical facilities at the Columbia Studio were used to the full by Bill Evans, even though they were only recording a small ensemble. And that is why the seven numbers sound far better than most of the trio's live recordings. And as Bill Evans once said, it was with this trio that he could fulfill his musical ambitions.

    Musicians:

    • Bill Evans (piano, electric piano

    • Eddie Gomez (bass)

    • Marty Morrell (drums)

Recording: May and June 1971 at CBS 30th Street Studio, New York, by Pete Weiss

    Production: Helen Keane

During the course of the present vinyl hype, many others have jumped on the bandwagon in the hope of securing a corner of the market. Very often they are not so ethical and use every imaginable source to master from: CDs, LPs, digital files, MP3s - or employed existant tools from the 80s and 90s for manufacturing.

When cutting the lacquer, the audio signal is delayed by one LP revolution against the signal, which controls the cutter head, and for this a digital delay is very often employed. Of course, the resultant sound signal is completely digital and thus only as good as this delay.

We should like to emphasise that Speakers Corner Records on principle only uses the original master tape as the basis for the entirely analogue cutting of lacquer discs. Groovy: The Red Garland Trio

Red Garland and Miles Davis had a symbiotic relationship. Red was such an important cog in the Davis quintet as a soloist, interactive accompanist and keeper of the repertory. Being in Miles' group gave Garland the exposure he otherwise would not have gotten. Once Garland's talent as a pianist, with a boundless repository of material in his head, was established, Prestige's Bob Weinstock signed him to a contract as a recording leader in his own right. With his Davis section-mate, Paul Chambers, on bass, and New York drummer Arthur Taylor, Garland formed a trio that met quite often in Rudy Van Gelder's studio. Groovy was the third in Red's trio series for Prestige and it has the usual fine mix of jazz standards, ballad standards, blues ballads and just plain blues. It is an object lesson in finding and maintaining a groove.

    Import

This 1957 date for Verve was the only official collaboration between Stan Getz and Oscar Peterson and it finds the two jazz greats in a quartet rounded out by guitarist Herb Ellis and bassist Ray Brown. The lack of drums here allows Getz's tenor to pace the foreground with a graceful precision while Peterson's deft fills and relaxed accompaniment creates the perfect atmosphere for creative interplay and fine sonic detail.

The Norman Granz-produced 7-song set features a dynamic mix of standards, Getz originals like the heartening Tour's End and an infectious version of Ellis' Detour Ahead. Traneing In With The Red Garland Trio

The recordings John Coltrane made for Prestige, both with and without Miles Davis, helped establish his first substantial foothold in the jazz world. He showed that he could play the blues; and whether he was treating a ballad at the usual tempo or taking one upstairs, he combined thought and emotion in a completely individual manner. The Garland trio, itself a recording entity for the label, was a strong unit that was sensitive to Trane's musical attitudes.

All For You: A Dedication To The Nat King Cole Trio

All for You is a tribute to the Nat King Cole Trio of the 1940s, when Cole performed as both a singer and a pianist. Krall, like her heroes Lena Horne and Carmen McRae, is also a singer-pianist, and she plays both roles on most of the songs here. She's able to link her singing to her piano playing in sympathetic ways and projects tremendous feeling through both. Like Cole in the '40s, Krall plays with a drummerless trio--here with guitarist Russell Malone and bassist Paul Keller. Their sense of intimate rapport is especially valuable on ballads such as You Call It Madness and I'm Thru with Love, but also allows such uptempo tunes as Hit That Jive Jack to swing with surprising lightness. -Geoffrey Himes

Schubert: Complete Trios For Piano And Cello (Speakers Corner)

Anyone who takes an interest in Schubert's late works will sooner or later come across clichÉ-like interpretations of his music that have been associated with a foreboding of his early death. Robert Schumann on the other hand was more objective when he looked at the score of Schubert's two great Piano Trios: he characterised that in E flat major as effectual, masculine and dramatic, and the sister work in B flat major as languishing, feminine and lyrical. Both masterpieces have in common highly varied movements, which must be approached with great insight, a deeply felt sustained lyricism, and a courageous approach as regards the bold themes. That this recording with the Beaux Arts Trio has taken on a benchmark status might well lie in the fact that the three musicians amalgamate romantic fire with analytical aplomb which results in Schubert pure. With their non-stop ebb and flow of melodies, wonderfully indulgent sound colouring and a fiery tour de force through the miraculously winding harmonic paths, the Beaux Arts Trio prove themselves to be among the very best of all Schubert interpreters.

Having taken their final bow at a concert in Leipzig in September 2009 after 54 years, the time is certainly ripe for an audiophile re-release of this superb recording.

    Recording: February 1966

    Break Stuff (Awaiting Repress)

Vijay Iyer's "third and best" (NY Times) trio album is now availabe on vinyl.

    Vijay Iyer: piano
    Stephan Crump: double bass
    Marcus Gilmore: drums

"Break Stuff" is what happens after formal elements have been addressed. Vijay Iyer calls the break "a span of time in which to act. It's the basis for breakdowns, breakbeats, and break dancing... it can be the moment when everything comes to life." A number of the pieces here are breakdowns of other Iyer constructions. Some are from a suite premiered at New York's Museum of Modern Art, some derive from Open City, a collaboration with novelist Teju Cole and large ensemble. The trio energetically recasts everything it touches. "Hood" is a tribute to Detroit techno pioneer Robert Hood. On "Work", Vijay pays homage to his "number one hero", Thelonious Monk. "Countdown" reconsiders the classic Coltrane tune inside a rhythmic framework inspired by West African music. "Mystery Woman" is driven by compound pulses which owe a debt to South Indian drumming. Fast moving and quick-witted, the group has developed a strong musical identity of its own, with an emphasis on what Iyer calls "co-constructing", exploring all the dynamics of playing together. Yet the three players also get abundant solo space and, in a reflective moment at the album's centre, Iyer plays a moving version of Billy Strayhorn's "Blood Count" alone. Break Stuff, recorded in June 2014 at New York's Avatar Studio and produced by Manfred Eicher, is the third ECM release from Vijay Iyer. It follows the chamber music recording Mutations and the film-and-music project Radhe Radhe: Rites of Holi.
