First 750 Numbered Copies Pressed On 180 Gram Orange Vinyl, Black Vinyl Thereafter

Trojan's First Release From 50 Years Ago!

In honour of the 50th year anniversary of the UK's first Trojan label, Music On Vinyl proudly make available once more the album that got the ball rolling back in the summer of 1967.

The first of a series of classic albums from the legendary Trojan catalogue that will see issue throughout the year, the erroneously titled 'Duke Reid Rock's Steady' was originally released by Island Records to promote their new Trojan label, an imprint launched to specifically showcase the productions of legendary Treasure Isle Records boss, Arthur 'Duke' Reid.

Simultaneously issued in Jamaica as 'Rock Steady Beat', the LP highlights the best of Reid's output from the preceding months and proved so popular back in '67 that pressings quickly sold out on both sides of the Atlantic.

Now, 50 years on, lovers of the coolest sound to emanate from Jamaica's golden shores can finally own a copy of this seminal collection without needing to spend a duke's ransom for the pleasure!

You Can Get It If You Really Want

Pressed On Black & Blue Marble Colored Vinyl

    Limited To 1000 Copies

It took the 1972 release of the soundtrack to The Harder They Come to break Desmond Dekker internationally, but the King of Ska already was a legend in his own land of Jamaica, where songs like "007 (Shanty Town)" and "Rudie Got Soul" made him the face of the rude boy culture (and influenced several generations of British mods and rockers). This 1970 record, his first for the Trojan label, features Dekker's irresistible version of the Jimmy Cliff tune "You Can Get It If You Really Want," which went to #2 on the UK charts, as well as another hit, "Pickney Gal." We're reissuing this cornerstone ska/rocksteady classic on black & blue marble vinyl limited to 1000 copies first-ever reissue on wax!

    Hard Love

Tim Showalter's latest release as Strand of Oaks, Hard Love, emanates an unabashed, raw, and
manic energy that embodies both the songs and the songwriter behind them. "For me, there
are always two forces at work: the side that's constantly on the hunt for the perfect song, and
the side that's naked in the desert screaming at the moon. It's about finding a place where
neither side is compromised, only elevated."

Drawing from his love of Creation Records, Trojan dub compilations, and Jane's Addiction,
and informed by a particularly wild time at Australia's Boogie Festival, he sought to create a
record that would merge all of these influences while evoking something new and visceral.
These influences coupled with an uninhibited and collaborative studio experience moved an
initial concept for a singularly feel-good record to something more complex and real. As
much as Showalter wants this record to seem like a party, it's more than that. It feels
like living. "You went away you went searching came back tired of looking" is how
Showalter begins the title track, a sentiment that epitomizes Showalter's own mentality in
beginning Hard Love. As the record progresses, so do the themes of dissatisfaction
and frustration with love, family, success, and aging, both in personal experience and
    songwriting

The sixties were a golden age for Jamaican vocal trios. During the latter half of this incredibly creative decade, a multitude of harmony groups made their mark on the island's music scene, but of these only a relative few possessed the talent and determination to endure beyond the rock steady era.

One trio that not only succeeded, but blossomed following the onset of reggae, is the Pioneers, who in 1969 became one of the first Jamaican acts to achieve international success with their UK hit, 'Long Shot Kick The Bucket'.

The success of the single was swiftly followed by what became one of Trojan's biggest selling long players of all time, the aptly titled 'Long Shot'.

Comprising new material along with the best of their recent Jamaican singles to date, the collection is a must-have for all self-respecting fans of boss reggae and is now finally available once again, looking and sounding better than ever!

Merritone Rock Steady 2: This Music Got Soul 1966-1967 (Awaiting Repress)

American rhythm & blues fervor, boosted by a multitude of sound systems playing 78rpm records on increasingly larger sets, gripped Jamaica from the late forties onwards but, towards the end of the decade, the American audience began to move towards a somewhat softer sound. The driving rhythm & blues discs became increasingly hard to find and the more progressive Jamaican sound system operators, realizing that they now needed to make their own music, turned to Kingston's jazz and big band musicians to record one-off custom cut discs. These were not initially intended for commercial release but designed solely for sound system play on acetate or 'dub plates' as they would later be termed. These 'specials' soon began to eclipse the popularity of American rhythm & blues and the demand for their locally produced music proved so great that the sound system operators began to release their music commercially on vinyl and became record producers. Clement 'Coxsone' Dodd, Duke Reid 'The Trojan' and Prince Buster, who operated his Voice Of The People Sound System, were among the first to establish themselves in this new role and the nascent Jamaican recording industry now went into overdrive.

In 1954 Ken Khouri had numbered among the first far-sighted entrepreneurs to produce mento records with local musicians (mento is Jamaica's original indigenous music) before progressing to opening Jamaica's first record manufacturing plant. Three years later he moved his operation to Foreshore Road (later renamed Marcus Garvey Drive) where, with the assistance of the inestimable Graeme Goodall, he updated and upgraded his recording studio. The importance of this enterprising move was critical to the development of Jamaican music and its influence both profound and far-reaching.

"It was Ken Khouri's Federal Recording Studio, the womb that gave birth to the talented writers, artists and musicians that gave Jamaica its musical identity." Prince Buster

Federal Records was not only the place for the sound system men to record their music but it was also where they had their records manufactured and, consequently, the company enjoyed a near-total monopoly on recording and record pressing in Kingston. In 1963 Ken Khouri sold his one track board to Clement 'Coxsone' Dodd, who established Studio One, and Ken imported the first stereo equipment to Jamaica and Federal began making stereo records. The following year WIRL (West Indies Records Limited) opened but the competition served to drive the company on to higher heights. Ken Khouri continued to work on his own productions and, in 1966, the seven-inch release of Hopeton Lewis' 'Take It Easy', recorded under the guidance of Trinidadian guitarist Lynn Taitt, ushered in the rock steady era.

These two essential albums showcase a stunning selection of well-known hits, and not so well-known rarities, from the vast Federal catalog. All tracks have been transferred direct from the master tapes and assembled with the invaluable assistance of Ken Khouri's son, Paul Khouri, who generously gave Dub Store unlimited access to the Federal tape vaults. The extensive liner notes feature extracts from extensive interviews with Paul Khouri whose knowledgeable recollections of working on Marcus Garvey Drive, not only as a producer but as an engineer and musician, are illuminating and educational. Both sets present an insight into the birth and growth of Federal Records and the Jamaican recording industry and are essential to an understanding of the real roots of reggae music.
