Schubert - Trout Quintet (Speakers Corner)
In the summer of 1819, Franz Schubert stayed in the Austrian town of Steyr where he began work on the composition of the five-movement Piano Quintet in A major, op. 114 (D 667) which was commissioned by the cellist Sylvester Paumgartner. The work was completed in the autumn and soon achieved great popularity under the name of Trout Quintet, which it owes to the Andantino fourth movement - a set of variations on the song of the same name.
The work has remained highly popular right up to the present day and so it comes as no surprise to find this highly praised recording, made with such renowned artists as the pianist Clifford Curzon, the violinist Willi Boskovsky and other members of the Vienna Octet, being released once again.
The ensembles refreshing performance reflects the sparkling lightness and virtuosity of the work. The well-balanced recording with its full tone certainly deserves a place in every music lovers collection.
- Sir Clifford Curzon and Members of the Vienna Octet
Recording: October 1957 at Sofiensaal, Vienna by James Brown
Production: Erik Smith
About Speakers Corner
At the beginning of the 90s, in the early days of audiophile vinyl re-releases, the situation was fairly straightforward. Companies such as DCC, Mobile Fidelity, Classic Records and, of course, Speakers Corner all maintained a mutual, unwritten ethical code: we would only use analogue tapes to manufacture records.
During the course of the present vinyl hype, many others have jumped on the bandwagon in the hope of securing a corner of the market. Very often they are not so ethical and use every imaginable source to master from: CDs, LPs, digital files, MP3s - or employed existant tools from the 80s and 90s for manufacturing.
A digital delay is gladly used when cutting a lacquer disc because tape machines with an analogue delay have become quite rare and are therefore expensive. When cutting the lacquer, the audio signal is delayed by one LP revolution against the signal, which controls the cutter head, and for this a digital delay is very often employed. Of course, the resultant sound signal is completely digital and thus only as good as this delay.
We should like to emphasise that Speakers Corner Records on principle only uses the original master tape as the basis for the entirely analogue cutting of lacquer discs. In addition, the pressing tool is newly manufactured as a matter of principle. We have one digital recording in our catalogue (Alan Parsons / Eye In The Sky"), but even in this particular case we used the analogue tapes for cutting.
We only employ existing tools for manufacturing if an improved result is not forthcoming, e.g. the title Elvis Is Back, which was mastered by Steve Hoffman and Kevin Gray, or several titles from our Philips Classics series, which in any case Willem Makkee cut from the original masters at the Emil Berliner Studios in the 90s. It goes without saying that we only used the mother and that new tools were made for our production.
To put it in a nutshell: we can ensure you that our releases are free from any kind of digital effects - excluding the exception above - and that the lacquer discs are newly cut.$34.99180 Gram Audiophile Virgin Vinyl LP - Sealed Buy Now
Trout SteelThe first artist-sanctioned reissue of iconoclastic English-born, Rome-based folk and experimental music legend Mike Cooper's classic 1970 album, this remastered version of Trout Steel presents a heady homebrew of lap steel and slide blues traditions, avant-jazz group improvisations, and studio explorations that presaged Cooper's adventurous work for decades to come. Cooper was forging connections between folk and experimental musics long before America got New or Weird. - Keith MolinÉ of Pere Ubu, for The Wire. Schubert: Trout QuintetSviatoslav Richter is universally acknowledged to be one of the greatest pianists of the 20th century, renowned for his virtuoso technique and the depth of his interpretations. Dmitri Shostakovich said about him: "Richter is an extraordinary phenomenon. The enormity of his talent staggers and enraptures. All the phenomena of musical art are accessible to him." He trained at the Moscow Conservatory under Heinrich Neuhaus, who considered Richter "already a complete artist, who had the ability to build a piece so that it seemed to lie before him like an immense landscape, revealed to the eye at a single glance.
The Borodin Quartet was founded in 1945 at the Moscow Conservatoire - the first cellist a certain Mstislav Rostropovich was replaced after few weeks by Valentin Berlinsky - was also close to Shostakovich, who personally consulted them on each of his quartets. The Borodin Quartet, celebrated for penetrating phrase and warm sound, was Richter favorite chamber music partner.
Georg Hörtnagel is a German double bassist who used to play with Bayerische Staatsoper during the Georg Solti era.
About this Austrian live recording from June 1980 GRAMOPHONE said: "This is a performance of high quality. Sviatoslav Richter in particular precisely catches the cheerful mood of the music and the underlying shadows of which one should sometimes be conscious, and he plays those simple tunes in octaves so freshly that you'd think he'd only just discovered their charms."1. "I should have been dead by 30, with the life I was leading. But I still have a career, and at 62, I'm still climbing the ladder, which keeps it exciting, instead of trying to rekindle past glories. ALIVE In AmsterdamOn November 28th 2015, Walter Trout took the stage at Amsterdam's Opulent Royal Theater Carre for a captivating live performance that showcased the blues-rock legend at full-throttle. With songs pulled from every era of his five-decade career, the 'ALIVE In Amsterdam' set is potent, From the stinging Luther Allison cover "I'm Back," to the plaintive B.B. King tribute "Say Goodbye To The Blues," which builds from neck-tingling guitar swells to a stunning virtuoso climax. 'Battle Scars' is well-represented by the harmony-bolstered rocker "Almost Gone" and the raucous "Tomorrow Seems So Far Away," while Trout is joined by his son Jon for "Rock Me Baby," and even finds time for a fistful of fan favorites, including "The Love That We Once Knew" and "Marie's Mood."
'ALIVE In Amsterdam' is the sound of a man announcing his resurrection after a period on the ropes. As Trout's army of international fans are painfully aware, recent times have taken the bandleader to the brink, hollowing a bleak diagnosis of life-threatening liver failure and hepatitis C in 2013. Trout's rebirth began with a successful transplant in may 2014, and gathered speed with 2015's 'Battle Scars': the acclaimed studio album that channeled his near-death experience into raw autobiographical songs.
Urgent, impassioned, and electrifying, ALIVE In Amsterdam is a live album to treasure. Walter Trout is on tour all this year, stopping off at some of the most prestigious venues such as Royal Albert Hall, Carnegie Hall, and Ryman Auditorium, as well as festivals in the US and Europe including Lead Belly and New Orleans Jazz & Heritage festivals. Trout always shows you magic in the studio, but it's on stage where he truly comes alive!LP 1

Blues For The Modern Daze (Awaiting Repress)Blues For The Modern Daze represents the guitar legend returning to his core blues roots; creating his first blues album in 23 years as a bandleader. Walter Trout's inspiration for the album was the country bluesman Blind Willie Johnson as he explains, His music is so beautiful, primal, direct and deeply spiritual that I wanted to feel it at my back when we were cutting these songs. Blues For The Modern Daze cuts right to the core of his art and his heart. Luther's Blues: A Tribute To Luther Allison (Awaiting Repress)Walter and Luther Allison were fellow Road Warriors.
Ever since Luther's untimely passing in 1997, Walter has wanted to do a tribute album to the memory of Luther. It is, however more than a tribute to Luther's playing and his song-writing; it is a tribute to a way of life that Luther exemplified, and a way of life that Walter knows so well:
To play and sing with everything you have in your body and soul to an audience, with the hope of reaching them, and somehow giving them an unforgettable experience of a live show.
This CD/Vinyl features a beautiful booklet with Walter's emotional story of the last time he saw Luther. Also many photos, and exclusive liner notes written by Luther's son, Bernard Allison, Luther's long-time love and partner Carolyn Rocky Brown, and Luther's song-writing partner and 25 year band member, James Solberg.1. Homebrew is the second studio album by Neneh Cherry. The album features several different genres, including between Jazz, Funk and Trip Hop. Hip Hop legends Gang Starr co-wrote and produced Soul Sassy and I Ain't Gone Under Yet. Geoff Barrow wrote and produced Somedays.
Trout features a guitar riff sampled from Steppenwolf's version of The Pusher, and the drum track by John Bonham from When The Levee Breaks.Buddy X was allegedly inspired by Lenny Kravitz. It was remixed by Notorious B.I.G and the Dream Team. The track Move With Me later appeared on the soundtrack of the 1993 film Sliver.

Clear SpotClear Spot is the seventh album by Captain Beefheart and the Magic Band.
After Trout Mask Replica, which was critically acclaimed but sold poorly, each of the group's following three albums was slightly more conventional than the one before. Beefheart wanted more commercial success - hence his decision to work with the widely respected team of producer Ted Templeman and engineer Donn Landee, who also created hits for artists such as the Doobie Brothers, Carly Simon and Van Morrison. Clear Spot gathers together much of the lyrical material that Beefheart had created or formulated at the beginning of The Spotlight Kid recordings. (via Wikipedia)1. Low Yo Yo Stuff

Between The Needles And NightfallBetween The Needles And Nightfall was conceived at Trout Recording in Brooklyn, NY where engineer Bryce Goggin (Pavement, Akron/Family) tracked Marco Benevento and his trio over three days. To achieve the colors he envisioned, Benevento recorded on a baby grand piano bolstered by guitar pick-ups, amplifiers and a myriad of pedals and circuit bend toys, while overdubbing Moog, Optigan, Mellotron and Farfisa. He then transferred the tracks to his home studio, taking the next two months to cut, loop and shape the pieces into full-fledged songs.
For the final mixes, Benevento handed off his work to three of his favorite engineers: Mell Dettmer (Sunn O))), Eyvind Kang, Jesse Lauter (Low Anthem, Elvis Perkins) and Vid Cousins (Amon Tobin, Kid Koala). The results range from the day-glo electro-rock of It Came From You to the simply-stated lullaby Illa Frost to the shimmering Arcade Fire-meets-Brad Mehldau anthem Two Of You.1. Greenpoint

Deep TripDestruction Unit are an American band formed in the Sonoran desert of Arizona. Dug up from the sonic landfills of the cosmos, these radical desert dwellers have built a reputation for both mesmerizing and terrorizing crowds with their sheer
power and intensity.
Formed by Ryan Rousseau, D. Unit was initially a synthheavy three piece whose other members were Jay Reatard and Alicja Trout (Lost Sounds); likewise Rousseau was also in the Reatards before Jay went solo. Born out of the nucleus of the Memphis Goner Records scene and transplanted into Tempe, AZ, Rousseau has grown the band in the last few years into a full sonic assault, which now includes three guitar players (himself, Nick Nappa & Jesco Aurelius), his brother Rusty Rousseau on bass, and a 19 year-old classically trained drummer, Andrew Flores. This line-up has released several cassettes on their own label Ascetic House, a small run lP, Void on Jolly Dream and most recently a limited edition 7 on Suicide Squeeze.
Deep Trip is their first proper studio album, produced by Ben Greenberg of The Men, Hubble, and Pygmy Shrews at Vacation Island in NY. It's the first long player which truly captures their burning spirits. Morphine boogie for the 21st century noise addict. Grrr...Fronted by Justin Rice and Christian Rudder, Bishop Allen is best known for making and self-releasing an EP each month for an entire year, then reworking some of the best songs for a highly acclaimed label debut (The Broken String). The rigorous EP project, and the extensive touring that has followed it, have allowed Bishop Allen to hone their craft: writing, performing and recording music.
The resulting album, Grrr..., reveals that after five years of comparisons to other artists like Jonathan Richman, The Kinks, Bright Eyes, Spoon, etc., in rave reviews from Rolling Stone, SPIN, Entertainment Weekly and many others, Bishop Allen has developed an artistry and sound that are unmistakably their own. One thing that distinguishes Bishop AllenÆs music is the quality of the writing. RiceÆs literate lyrics, which The Los Angeles Times has praised for their ôpoetic insight,ö have a universality that has made them resonant to listeners of all ages and earned them champions ranging from the young comic actor Michael Cera to the National Public Radio host Scott Simon.
Each of the 13 tracks comprising Grrrà is a succinct composition, and yet the album also coheres seamlessly as a song cycle. The melody and/or rhythm of one track is often contiguous with the next. As always, Rice and Rudder are responsible not only for the writing, but the lionÆs share of the playing and the recording: the guitars, pianos, marimbas, ukeleles and vocals. And, as before, Darbie Nowatka shares in the singing. Otherwise, the album features contributions from a number of their friends: drums and percussion by Michael Tapper, horns by Jon Natchez and Kelly Pratt, and strings by Daniel Hart. Bryce Goggin (Pavement, The Apples in Stereo, Luna, Sebadoh) offered the band some invaluable production tips and, at his famed Trout Recording studio in Brooklyn, recorded the drums and mixed the album.1. Coil SeaCoil Sea is a collaborative and mostly improvised recording project featuring David Heumann (Arbouretum, Human Bell), Matthew Pierce (Arbouretum) and Michael Lowry (both of Lake Trout and Big in Japan) and Walker David Teret (ex-Arbouretum, Anomoanon).
The project began when Lowry and Pierce invited Heumann to sit in with their long-running instrumental project Big in Japan for one performance of a month-long residency at Baltimores Windup Space. Heumann and Arbouretum had recently finished a European tour, and the show with Big in Japan enlivened his idea to record improvised performances with a loose group of familiar but unaffiliated musicians.
Heumanns goal was to record with few set ideas and little editorial input, allowing the music to develop naturally as the group coalesced. Heumanns performance with Big in Japan had also included percussionist Michael Kuhl (Red Headed Temper, Jenny Boyle and the Drivers), so Heumann invited Kuhl, childhood friend Jimmy Wallace (guitar), and his former Arbouretum and Anomoanon bandmate Walker Teret (bass) to join the session.
The first session was recorded by Chris and Mickey Freeland on a Saturday in September. Only one song (Abyssinia) had a pre-written melody; the rest of the performances were composed and improvised on the spot, with the only verbal directions being references to tempo and key. A portion of the recording from that session was edited and mixed with Freeland, and later with Rob Girardi at Lord Baltimore Recordings, for the album tracks Abyssinia, Revert to Dirt and Waking the Naga. Much care was taken to preserve the spirit and feel of the original takes, even as effects were added to the original tracks, instruments were brought in and out of the mix and performances were cut and spliced.
A second session was arranged, this time recording at Lord Baltimore, based around a melody Heumann had come up with in a Lydian mode, which appears on the record as Dolphins in the Coil Sea. The track was envisioned as an homage to jazz/noise legend Sonny Sharrock, and is unique to the album in that its almost untouched from the original recording.1. Abyssinia

This Is The LifeThey told me all is fair in love and war, so I killed the one I've been fighting for.
So went the process for Hunter Morris after the dissolution of his prior band Gift Horse. A professional fly fishing guide by trade, he spent a year on the trout streams of north Georgia literally and figuratively far away from the music scene in his home of Athens, GA. This time of reflection produced the songs that would become Blue Blood. But it was the process of reinvention that provided the inspiration for these songs long before there were finished lyrics, structures, and arrangements.
Blue Blood began as a new solo project for Morris, but through the process of making demos in solitude and trying to find a new voice for his songs, what emerged was a collection of songs worthy of full band, psychedelic pop treatment. And Morris knew just the person for the job. He sent some of the songs to Hank Sullivant, who fronts Kuroma, was a founding member of The Whigs, and is currently the guitarist for MGMT, and who had previously produced the Gift Horse LP "Mountain of Youth". After hearing Morris' demos, Sullivant immediately assumed a more involved producer/instrumentalist role and the studio version of Blue Blood became a collaboration between the two. Morris and Sullivant recruited J.J. Bower (Dead Confederate, Battle Tapes) to play the drums, as well as keyboardist Dave Spivey, and they recently completed what will be the debut Blue Blood LP "This Is The Life", which will be released in October of 2014 on This Is American Music.
The album was definitely the foundation upon which Blue Blood was built, as Morris and Sullivant essentially completed recording it before Blue Blood ever played a live show. However, it is the live lineup of Blue Blood that has brought the songs into their own. Morris says that having the songs recorded prior to forming a band to play them made the learning process much more efficient. But it's what each member brings of their own playing style and personality that give the songs an added depth in the live setting.1. Everyday Is Yesterday

FRKWYS Vol. 11 - Contos De LisboaFor the the eleventh volume of FRKWYS, an unrestricted series pairing contemporary
artists with their influential predecessors, gifted guitar squire Steve Gunn meets roving,
radiating legend Mike Cooper in Lisbon, Portugal.
Sharing their vision over lengthy living room guitar sessions and evenings of cold wine
in Fado taverns, Gunn and Cooper created Cantos de Lisboa, an album with variable
vernacular shades and musical forms from Portugal's antiquity.
Cantos means "corner" in Portuguese, as well as "chant" or "song" (this latter meaning
evolved from the Latin antecedent referring to stanzas of verse in poetry). For two artists
whose roots lie in the country blues and its subverted offshoots, the proverbial "corner"
is actually home, the undisturbed spot where music can flourish.
A tranquil interlude for these two travellers to create off-guard improvisations in their
shared style of deconstructed guitar music, Cantos de Lisboa is a curious detail in the
periphery of their snapshot of Portugal.
In his fifty-year-plus career, Cooper's global ventures have transported his music to
exotic locales parallel to Lisbon. 2004's Rayon Hula musically translated the patterned
flora of aloha shirts (Cooper's signature garment) as looped samples of famed Hawaiian
vibraphone player Arthur Lyman for an avant vivified form of exotica.
Rayon Hula signaled Cooper's vital re-emergence as a dexterous alchemist of slide
guitar. Cooper's discography is colored with similar instances of casually conceptual,
improvisatory guitar music, including his 1970 masterpiece Trout Steel (an album Gunn
recalls in Cantos de Lisboa's liner notes as shaping his own ambitions and music).
For his part, Gunn's path to Portugal was compelled by his kinship to Cooper and
his ilk's experimentation with guitar-picked country blues and 70s British folk. Gunn's
extracurricular immersion in free jazz and psychedelia, no doubt influenced by his
Philadelphia upbringing and surroundings, ensures his playing never grits or grids and
always soars to ecstatic heights.
These musical emblems were gracefully memorialized on Gunn's celebrated Time
Off (Paradise of Bachelors, 2013) and across a substantial catalog of solo, duo and
ensemble work that resembles that of a veteran player more than a young guitar
On Cantos de Lisboa, Gunn and Cooper take emotive cues from Fado, the regional
music of Portugal, which is in close plaintive spirit to the blues. A melancholy seeps into
the music, while steering a wide berth from any bummer notes or pastiche. Cooper's
sparse effects toolkit and stately, gliding cadences are nimbly employed, while Gunn's
ashen voice and steady strum lend an intensely organic feel to the album's improvisatory
The latter half of Cantos de Lisboa echoes the "saudade" theme as referenced in
the blissful opening track, Cooper's howl spiriting the Portuguese word that translates
roughly into "loss" or "longing." Saudade is said to be the core feature of Fado music. In
Cantos de Lisboa, Saudade becomes a spirit inhabiting the album's corners, but never
disrupting the musicians' collaborative evocations.
In the hands of these two limitless guitarists, Cantos de Lisboa convenes in an abstract,
almost field recorded take on lap-steel and American Primitive guitar styles. For the
brief idyll, Gunn and Cooper's collaboration is remarkably rich, marking their passage
through Portugal not just as a time to revel in an ancient city, but a time for focused
collaboration and creative consonance.1. Saudade Do Santos-o-Velho

ADAD-PRO-5765xSupersonic Blues Machine
CalifornisoulCALIFORNISOUL! That's exactly what it is. It's the missing soundtrack to a summertime drive from Los Angeles to San Francisco in 1971! Fabrizio Grossi explains. The album picks up right where the band left off on their well-received debut record, 'West of Flushing, South of Frisco'. Californisoul is all about great songs. Cry is a soul-searching, simmering piece of poetry and Lance Lopez preaches it in the most righteous way. I Am Done Missing You is another number that reaches down deep with a message that will resonate with both spurned lovers and those who have left their bad habits and way in the past. This Is Love could be the lovechild of Bob Marley and War with some stinging guitar action spread on top. Blues, rock, reggae, soul, it's all here in a joyous abundance and a celebration of life. That's the nature of Californisoul. Guests on the album include Billy Gibbons, Steve Lukather, Eric Gales and Walter Trout. Fabrizio adds, Lots of people have been saying to me 'why does Supersonic Blues Machine always bring guests around? You guys can stand your own ground', and there are three answers to that: 1) we're all super friends and we're having a blast, 2) most of them don't give lessons and for us this is the only way to learn their secret ways and 3) because of the inspiration and the challenge they bring to the table!LP 1

REDD-FAT-2744xRiver City Tanlines
Coast To CoastThe River City Tanlines (named in honor of the farmer tan) is a three-piece rock band from Memphis, TN. Principle songwriter and hardest working woman in the music business, Alicja Trout, is a veteran of countless noteworthy punk/indie bands over the years, including The Clears, The Lost Sounds and her current projects Alicja-pop, MouseRocket and Black Sunday. Likewise the powerful rhythm section of Terrence Bishop and John Bonds are no strangers to the scene either, having played together behind such names as Jack Oblivion, R.L. Burnside, Jim Dandy & Black Oak Arkansas, and Monsieur Jeffrey Evans.
In 2009 the River City Tanlines appeared in Craig Brewer's (Hustle and Flow, Black Snake Moan) web-series Five Dollar Cover for MTV, and performed I'm Your Negative in a rollerderby fight scene. They also have a song (Black Knight, a crowd favorite at live shows) featured in the EA Sports video game Skate. Together since late 2004, the band has toured extensively in North America and Europe playing clubs and festivals, and has ten releases on various record labels around the world. Their last album I'm Your Negative was released in 2006 by Dirtnap Records out of Portland, OR.
This, their newest offering, Coast To Coast, was produced by Bruce Watson (Hasil Adkins, T-Model Ford, John Paul Keith) at his Dial Back Sound Studios and will be released on Big Legal Mess Records/Fat Possum. The 10-song set runs the gamut from the galloping opener I Don't Get It to the poppy Stop My Heart to the Ramones-esque Pretty Please and the psyche rock of Dark Matter, all adding up to what is sure to become another Memphis classic!1.
