Back in 2005, longtime listeners could have seen it coming: it was only a matter of time before John Mayer dropped the pop star burden and proved he could really bring it on the six-string! Chalk it up to one too many Dave Matthews comparisons, or his image after the success of Your Body Is a Wonderland, but something convinced Mayer it was time to take it to the next level.
With help from studio pros Steve Jordan and Pino Palladino, he succeeds on Try!
His covers of Jimi Hendrix's Wait Until Tomorrow and Ray Charles' I Got a Woman should convince even the most purist Guitar Player magazine subscibers. Or else, the blues-rock opener Who Do You Think I Was will do for sure.
Mixed in with the Stevie Ray Vaughan and Eric Clapton-esque stuff are a few mellow numbers (Daughters most notably), but even those songs seem juiced up with rock-God hormones.

Try ItThe Standells' key albums for the Tower label (Dirty Water, Why Pick On Me, and Try It) perfectly bottled a rebellious wave of sound sweeping across Mid-1960's teen clubs, radio playlists and record racks. Starting with the genre-defining, proto-punk smash "Dirty Water", through a series of equally memorable underdog anthems ("Sometimes Good Guys Don't Wear White," "Why Pick on Me") and obscenities (the banned "Try It"), the Standells left an indelible mark on their era. Those three Tower albums are a veritable feast of three chord, fuzz-drenched, Vox Organ-driven "squares"-repellant.
Built around the banned title track, Try It is a tale of two (LP) sides; one a cohesive step into super-charged '67 Standells Soul, the other a bet-hedging exercise that compiles possibly the strongest material of the band's career. Latter includes the classic Standells style, either at its most pulverizing ("Barracuda," "Riot on Sunset Strip") or now one foot into psychedelia ("All Fall Down," "Did You Ever Have That Feeling"). It provides the perfect bookend to the Standells' legendary Tower Records era albums.1. Can't Help But Love You

Try MeYour favorite band's favorite band, Self Defense Family enjoys a distinct renown within the punk community. Well-respected and critically lauded but difficult and idiosyncratic, the band has done things their way almost to a fault. Eschewing sing-alongs and easy anthems in favor of personal lyrics, they stand apart from their contemporaries in punk and hardcore. Their strangely tense guitar-work framed within otherwise hook laden songs lends the band an unmistakable sound. Opting to be heavy in emotion rather than heavy in sound.
Led by vocalist, lyricist, and personality Patrick Kindlon, Self Defense Family have extended their branches to organically include touring and session musicians. Allowing them to evolve into a musical collective with more than ten active members at any given time. Interestingly enough, no member of the assemblage has played every show or played on every recording by the collective.

Tri RepetaeTri Repetae, the third album from Autechre finally made available again on vinyl, having been out of print on vinyl since 2001. On reflection, Tri Repeate stands tall as one of the most out-there (and if you know what that means...) and boundary-pushing releases from Ae ever. Going back to the group's roots as b-boy's, Tri... features ten variations on street sounds from hip-hop and techno to industrial and jungle. Released at a time when producers were ripe with ideas for cosmic breakbeat experimentation, Tri... mixed the glitchy twisted dynamics of EPs such as the criminal justice bill protest Anti and sculpted a long player that resembles some of the most 'floor friendly' Ae to ever grace a packed nightclub soundsystem. The ten tracks pulled influence from previous outings, from the glacial Amber chug of Overand to the Incunabula acid of Leterel. But the overall sound is one of mixing influence from the avant-garde of Iannis Xenakis, Edgard Varese & Tod Dockstar with the mid 90's post-hardcore sound of jungle. For anyone looking to get to grips with Ae but wanting something that bridges the gap between the early analogue escapism and the latter deconstructionist stance of elseq, Tri Repetae is the perfect point to dive into. Mixing elements of groups such as Coil at their most industrial, the austere techno of the Downwards crew and the cold yet funky electro of Man Parrish, they composed an album that still, twenty one years since its release, has one of the most singular sounds for anything resembling electro techno, and what other group can you think of who have you can say have ever managed that?1. Founded By Front Man Ronnie James Dio
Elf was an American rock band founded by singer and bassist Ronnie James Dio, keyboardist Doug Thaler, drummer Gary Driscoll, and guitarists Nick Pantas and David Feinstein (Dio's cousin). The band was originally called The Electric Elves, but was shortened to The Elves and finally Elf in 1972. Elf disbanded in 1975 after recording three albums and after most of the lineup had been absorbed into Ritchie Blackmore's new group, Rainbow.
Ronnie James Dio went on to a successful career in heavy metal, fronting Rainbow, Black Sabbath, Heaven & Hell, and his own band, Dio. David Feinstein also found a career in metal, leading the band The Rods for a number of years. Original keyboardist Doug Thaler went on to a career in music management.
Recorded while the band was evolving slowly into the Ritchie Blackmore's Rainbow, Trying to Burn the Sun is the third and final release from Elf, the band that finally earned Ronnie James Dio the attention he had been seeking since the late 50s. After writing and recording a few singles for Blackmore, Dio and Elf were solidly moving in a heavier musical direction.

REDD-ISU-5510xFour Year Strong
Rise Or Die Trying (Awaiting Repress)Worcester, Massachusetts. 8 pm. Those who have their hearts set on a Sunday night bingo game or knitting circle at the Quinsigamond Village Community Center will walk away sorely disappointed. Instead, nearly 600 kids spanning all ages and tastes have excitedly packed themselves into the tiny venue. The room is plunged into darkness and the wild shouting echoes in the air; this is the moment they've been waiting for. The first strains of Michael Jackson's "Thriller" filter through the speakers as Four Year Strong take their hometown stage, fully prepared to shred faces, blow minds, and take no prisoners.
Alan Day (Vocals/Guitar), Dan O'Conner (Vocals/Guitar), Joe Weiss (Bass), Josh Lyford (Synth), and Jake Massucco (Drums) are Four Year Strong. At first, this may not raise eyebrows or drop jaws, but it is only a matter of time. Bringing a unique blend of brutal breakdowns and soaring choruses, Four Year Strong have cut their teeth into the Worcester hardcore scene and thirst for more. Their music incites a riot like nothing seen before, leaving live crowds and CD listeners alike simultaneously blown away, and fired up.
Their influences range from Lifetime to Saves the Day, Gorilla Biscuits to New Found Glory. "We just play exactly what we want to hear," describes Dan, explaining their combination of hardcore and pop-punk. Sharing an average age of 20 years old and with a do-it-yourself determination, Four Year Strong do not pretend to be anyone but themselves. The band does not sugarcoat their image, avoiding the pretty-boy front that smothers the scene. Behind the numerous tattoos and grizzly beards, Four Year Strong are the kind of guys you would want to bring home to Mom and Dad. The band does not bother with egos or attitude, determined to connect with every fan on a personal level.
Their debut full-length, Rise or Die Trying, premieres on I Surrender Records. Already, the album has generated an excited buzz across the web, featured on websites like Absolutepunk.net and FriendsorEnemies.com to print magazines Rolling Stone and Alternative Press. The band has nearly 1 Million plays on Myspace with nothing more than a taste of what Rise or Die Trying will bring. Unrelenting spirit, gut-wrenchingly good music, and no flashy gimmicks, Four Year Strong are building themselves to the top with an indestructible foundation.
Four Year Strong combine equal parts melody and mayhem; however, their true talent lies in the ability to use these parts to create one exciting, infectious whole. "We wanted to put out a great record and not just a bunch of great songs." They fully embrace their album title, Rise or Die Trying, and Four Year Strong refuse to stop until they've taken the world by storm.

IterationsWith the release of his 'Preparations' EP on Tri
Angle in late 2013, Fis and his inimitable and
wholly original sound was introduced to the wider
world. Since he'd first emerged with a series of
ultra rare 12" releases in 2012 on various drum
and bass oriented labels the Wellington, New
Zealand based producer had quietly been tipped
on the underground as one to watch. The praise
heaped upon 'Preparations' definitely seemed to
justify the hype that had quietly been building
behind the man otherwise known as Oliver
Peryman. Pitchfork referred to Fis as an artist who
'was in the process of uncovering an altogether
new rhythmic grammar' and on 'Iterations', his
latest EP on Tri Angle, he continues to do just that.
It's still a pretty daunting task trying to explain
exactly what Fis sounds like. He's been referred to
as a drum and bass producer, but as XLR8R have
rightly stated, 'even in the context of the drum &
bass resurgence there's little question that Fis is
exploring some exciting, uncharted territory.' The
disorientating and confounding rhythms are still
present, but in comparison to 'Preparations',
'Iterations' feels more expansive and oceanic, less
claustrophobic and ever so slightly more
approachable. What these 4 tracks confirm is that
Fis is a producer who has something important
and special to add to the electronic genre.1. Iterations

ADAD-TRI-2815xThe Haxan Cloak
ExcavationTri Angle Records is very excited to release The Haxan Cloak's eagerly-awaited second album, Excavation. In 2011 with the release of his debut, self titled album, The Haxan Cloak, solo project of multi instrumentalist, Bobby Krlic, appeared seemingly out of nowhere with an impressively fully formed sound that blew away most anyone who heard it. Recorded over the space of 3 years, The Haxan Cloak was a wildly ambitious fusion of malevolent strings, junkyard found-sounds and primitive percussion, Krlic's grand ambitions transcending the fact that it was all recorded in a shed at the bottom of Krlic's parent's home in Wakefield, Yorkshire. In the two years since the release of his debut, Krlic relocated to London and began working on it's epic follow up, and Tri Angle Records debut; Excavation.
Bolstered by the concept he was developing for his follow up and a desire to challenge himself into new terrains, Krlic has evolved his sound to incorporate more of his electronic influences. The result is an album awash with serrated beats and cavernous sub-bass, meshing with the classical drones and ghostly details The Haxan Cloak fans will have already been accustomed to. Excavation finds Krlic confidently adopting a more minimalist approach to his compositions, experimenting with space and silence without forsaking any of the intensity that made his debut such a powerful statement of intent.
If The Haxan Cloak was conceived as the soundtrack to a character's journey towards death, Excavation is its sequel representing the journey after death. Excavation is about disconnecting entirely from this and entering upon a more astral plane, explaining some of the albums more ethereal, ambient moments that are in constant tension with jagged and aggressive elements. This journey isn't supposed to represent an archetypal Heaven or Hell scenario, but something more abstract and unknowable; the abstraction of the situation being one of its most unsettling aspects. Excavation is another uncompromising, incredibly personal record from an artist who is continuing to operate very much within his own world.1. Consumed

'Preparations' is the first record to be released on Tri Angle by Fis. Based in Wellington, New Zealand, Fis has steadily been building a name for himself on the underground as a producer to keep an eye on. Having already put out a number of very limited edition and very well received releases through a handful of drum and bass oriented labels, 'Preparations' finds Fis at a point in his music making career where he's ready to be introduced to a wider audience and confirm why websites like Resident Advisor have had things like this to say about him in the past; 'A producer that has suddenly appeared, rather fully-formed, doing something completely individual, sounding like absolutely no one else.' It's pretty difficult to explain exactly what Fis sounds like. Drawing upon a rich history of New Zealand customs and periods of heavy meditation for inspiration, Fis's tracks have the ability to completely disorientate and absorb the listener, creating rhythms that constantly seem to be cannibalizing one another. 'Preparations' feels forward thinking in the extreme and yet entirely elemental and strangely ancient.1. Magister Nunns

That's HarakiriIt isn't often an artist seems to materialize from nowhere with a sound so disinterested in following any conventional rules that it inspires equal measures bafflement and astonishment, but in 2012 with the release of the 'Unknown Vectors' EP, Milwaukee based producer Sd Laika did just that. Taking the already alien sounds of grime music as a starting off point and abrasively twisting them into something even more unknowable, Laika had developed a sound that defied any easy categorization. 2 years later Dummy Magazine would come to refer to this record as 'one of the most jaw-droppingly inventive debuts in recent memory and ought to be considered "the other 'Cold Mission'" (in reference to the highly acclaimed Logos LP from 2013)'. After 'Unknown Vectors' Sd Laika became something of a mystery, disappearing from the scene altogether leaving behind him a small, but hardcore cult fanbase convinced they'd glimpsed something very special in those 5 tracks. It was only in 2013 when Tri Angle approached Sd Laika that a new record began to take shape. This record would end up consisting of songs Sd Laika had recorded in 2011 and 2012, songs he'd convinced himself would never see the light of day. For various reasons it looked likely Unknown Vectors would wind up being Laika's one and only ever release, which is why we're so excited (and as huge fans, relieved) to announce the release of his debut album 'That's Harakari'.1. WaterfallIt's safe to say since his emergence at the tail end of 2011 Evian Christ, aka Joshua Leary, has had a whirlwind two years. Off the back of his breakthrough mixtape "Kings And Them" which came out on Tri Angle Records in February 2012, the 24 year old, Ellesmere Port, UK native has produced on Kanye West's "Yeezus", collaborated with acclaimed conceptual artist Matthew Barney, released the notably abstract sound-piece Duga-3, performed around the world alongside the likes of Purity Ring, Actress and Four Tet and garnering positive reviews and features in global tastemaker press including Details Magazine, Dazed & Confused, Pitchfork and VIBE amongst many others.
Most notably, Evian Christ has signed a publishing deal with DONDA, run by Kanye West, where he will continue with his work as a producer.
His latest EP "Waterfall" finds Evian Christ exhibiting a creative restlessness that continues to make it harder to pigeonhole this young, evolving artist. On "Kings And Them" Evian Christ conjured up a sound that was influenced by hip hop as it much as it was by more ambient forms of music. On "Waterfall" Evian Christ has taken his unique sound into a far noisier and more aggressive territory.
The lead track from "Waterfall", the hip hop laced 'Salt Carousel' may open the record with the sort of dreamlike serenity that typified the vast majority of Kings, but it's really the quiet before the storm as harsher, more abrasive elements rush in and dominate. On 'Fuck Idol' huge walls of digital distortion clash with code red beats that grow more and more frantic as the track progresses, while the title track is a blast of metallic dancehall dread that mutates multiple times over the space of 4 minutes into something truly epic.
Having spent the past year experimenting and challenging himself, and in refusing to simply duplicate a sound that garnered him so much attention to begin with and led one of, if the not, the world's biggest hip hop artists to seek him out, "Waterfall" finds Evian Christ growing in confidence as a producer and continuing to elude any sort of easy categorization.
Recorded partially in his hometown of Ellesmere Port and partially in New York, "Waterfall" was mixed by Noah Rubin (Pusha T, Wu Tang Clan) and mastered by Heba Kedry (The Mars Volta, Liturgy, Fis). Track 2, 'Propeller', contains a sample of 'Nine' by close friend and affiliate producer, Lukid.1. Salt Carousel

Over the past 2 years Rabit has developed a formidable reputation within the underground via a steady stream of acclaimed 12 releases and mixtapes. The band returned to the studio with their friend Greg Lindholm, who previously produced the band's first album, This Couch Is Long & Full Of Friendship, Tiny Moving Parts started with thirteen songs before whittling away the excess and finding the core in its ten song form. Formed by brothers Matthew and Billy Chevalier and cousin Dylan Mattheisen, the album blooms into optimism across its ten tracks, mixing modern guitar, sensitive songwriting, and high production with their unique flash of musical technicality. Celebrate starts with darker, sadder moments, like Happy Birthday and its story of being left, and fights to stay positive as it carries through.
