The Boss Of The Blues (Pure Pleasure)

Besides helping to invent rock 'n roll with his hit Shake, Rattle and Roll, Big Joe Turner was one of the most soulful blues shouters of all time. His best albums married the boogie-woogie piano stylings of the great Pete Johnson with a jazzy jumpin' horn section. Boss Of The Blues is arguably Joe's best recording, in part because he sang with particular gusto during these 1956 sessions. At the time, Boss Of The Blues marked a nostalgic return to the jump-blues style that Turner helped pioneer in the '40s. Besides Johnson, Boss featured some of Kansas City's finest ever jazzmen and various members of Count Basie's band, including Joe Newman (trumpet), Pete Brown (alto sax), Lawrence Brown (trombone), Frank Wess (tenor sax) and Freddie Green (guitar). The bawdy Cherry Red and the rollicking Roll 'Em Pete are my favorite Turner-Johnson collaborations. Both feature some incredible playing by the piano master. Turner's versions of I Want A Little Girl, Low Down Dog, You're Driving Me Crazy, and Morning Glories are definitive. If I had to compile a list of my 10 favorite albums, Boss Of The Blues would be there.

We only employ existing tools for manufacturing if an improved result is not forthcoming, e.g. the title Elvis Is Back, which was mastered by Steve Hoffman and Kevin Gray, or several titles from our Philips Classics series, which in any case Willem Makkee cut from the original masters at the Emil Berliner Studios in the 90s. Live At The Roseland

Randy Bachman and C.F. Fred Turner were the core members of Bachman-Turner Overdrive throughout their commercial heyday in the seventies, sharing duties on the lead vocals with Bachman contributing lead guitar and Turner the bass. Between them they also composed the vast majority of the band's many hit singles. Reuniting at the end of 2009 they released an eponymous album in 2010 and in November of that year they performed at the famous Roseland Ballroom in New York City as part of their North American tour. This double live album was recorded at that show, which was also filmed and released on DVD and Blu-ray.

    Love Ire & Song

Frank Turner is an English folk singer-songwriter and former vocalist of legendary UK punk band Million Dead. Like an earlier folksinger with roots in the punk movement, Billy Bragg, Turner spits out songs that are at once effortless and heartfelt, filled with venom, self-doubt, and love for the everyday people he meets in the street. This album was released in the UK in 2008 to glowing reviews and year-end best of lists and is now available stateside.

    Be More Kind

Frank Turner has announced his seventh studio album, Be More Kind, which is set for release via Interscope Records. Months after the release of Songbook, a career-spanning retrospective which also saw reworked versions of tracks from across the past decade, Be More Kind represents a thematic and sonic line in the sand for the 36-year-old. The new album combines raw political and personal universal anthems with the intricate folk and punk roar trademarks of Turner's sound imbued with new, bold experimental shades.

Be More Kind was produced by Charlie Hugall (Florence And The Machine, Halsey) and White Denim's Austin Jenkins and Joshua Block. "I wanted to try and get out of my comfort zone and do something different," says Turner. Originally, he contacted Jenkins and Block at their Niles City Sound studio in Fort Worth, Texas with the idea of recording a soul album in the vein of Dexys Midnight Runners. He found they were equally enthusiastic when he changed his mind and decided he wanted to record a more rock-led album with tints of electronic pop. "I have an obscure corner of my music taste where I'm into glitch electronic music and Warp Records," says Turner. "It's not an electronic record but I got into arpeggiator synths." While 2015's Positive Songs for Negative People was cut in nine intense days, Be More Kind was made over a period of seven months giving Turner the opportunity to turn songs on their head, try different versions, and shake up the dynamics within his band.

Turner was halfway through writing a very different sort of album, a concept record about women from history who had been ignored, when he was reading a collection of Clive James's poetry and one particular line compelled him to re-think his direction. The line, from a poem called Leçons Des TÉnèbres, reads: "I should have been more kind. It is my fate / To find this out, but find it out too late." "It devastated me the first time I read it," Turner says. "A lot of older, wiser people tend to say things like that, that the things that come out in the wash at the end of a human life are the way you treated the people around you. In the modern world, that's a lesson that all of us, myself included, could do to learn."

Turner and his band, The Sleeping Souls, were touring America in 2016 "when the world decided to go collectively nuts" and the songs that make up Be More Kind started to come together. "Somewhere in the record, there's a convergence of the ideas of personal and political, which is a central theme of the album," Turner says. One of the other driving themes of the album is empathy, even for your enemy. "You should at least be able to inhabit the mental universe of the people you disagree with. If you can't do that, then how do you communicate with people other than through force of arms, which is something we all agree is a bad idea."

The first track to be released from Be More Kind is "1933", a clattering, state-of-the-nation anthem. Furious and direct, it's inspired by articles Turner saw that suggested the alt-right was punk rock. "That filled me with a mixture of incredulity and anger," says Turner. "The idea that Breitbart or Steve Bannon think they have anything to do with punk rock makes me extremely angry." The other theme in the track is summed up by the line, "If I was one of the greatest generation / I'd be pissed / I'd be screaming at my grandkids / that we already did this." "These ideas are surfacing again that collectively as a species we've already shot down," says Turner.

    England Keep My Bones

Frank Turner is ready. On the other side of the Atlantic in his native U.K., he has had a banner year, seeing his single gI Still Believeh catch fire at radio, nominated for NMEfs Best Solo Artist award, scooping the prestigious 'Spirit Of Independence' award from Kerrang, and headlining a sold]out Brixton Academy show in December.

Now Frank Turner is set to release his highly anticipated fourth album, England Keep My Bones, with contributions from Hold Steady keyboardist Franz Nicolay, folk singers Emily Barker and Chris T]T, and Unbelievable Truthfs Andy Yorke.

England Keep My Bones comes on the heels of Frankfs biggest U.S. push so far, a fall tour with Social Distortion, continuing the DIY aesthetic Frank has brought to conquering America: touring with Chuck Raganfs Revival Tour, Gaslight Anthem, and the Offspring, while always taking the opportunity to play at a local record store or living room along the way. Now that he has built a U.S. base one fan at a time, 2011 looks set to be the year of Frank Turner.

    Feel Good (Pure Pleasure)

Feel Good, not Curtis Mayfield's Superfly, is the sound of early-'70s pimping - even when the tempo slows down, which happens rarely, it's for a slow blues grind, not a ballad, and songs like Tina's Kay Got Laid (Joe Got Paid) make no apologies for mythologizing pimps. This results in a supremely sleazy, utterly addictive record, one that's relentless in its rhythms and fearless in its funk as Ike lays down nasty rock & roll guitar - check his solos on Feel Good, where he's as elastic as rubber - and Tina tears it up with pure, unbridled passion. Feel Good is quintessentially '70s - the fuzztoned funk practically conjures up platform shoes and mile-wide collars - but it doesn't belong to any one sound, it casually draws from Southern soul, James Brown funk, black pride, Superfly style and juke joint R&B, a sound that is uniquely identified with Ike & Tina. And while this contains no flat-out classics like Nutbush City Limits or Proud Mary as an album Feel Good undoubtedly ranks among their very best: it's a non-stop party.

Big Joe Rides Again (Speakers Corner)

That the experts inducted 'Big Joe' Turner into the Blues Hall of Fame in 1983, i.e. during his lifetime, is surely in order when one considers how he expressed his attitude to life with his 12-bar stylistic freedom. That he was additionally honoured by being posthumously inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, however, makes one wonder whether the incorruptible experts had made a mistake. No matter what: this giant of a man with his big, gentle voice had certainly earned a place of honour in the era of swing as well.

Turner, who appeared on stage with Goodman, Ellington, Tatum and - in later years - with Gillespie and Eldridge, offers his listeners many facets of the blues. The opening number, Switchin' In The Kitchen, is a fairly fast boogie-woogie where the vocal swings freely with sharp blasts in the background. Other swinging numbers, in which jazz champions such as Coleman Hawkins and Ernie Royal perform solos, include several ballad-like evergreens (Pennies From Heaven), which Turner and his band elaborate to become an imposing aria (Until The Real Thing Comes Along).

The grooves of this LP are distinguished by means of the open, unfiltered Atlantic sound. The saxophone solos in particular, complete with the clicking of the valves and blowing noise, give one the feeling that the soloist is performing in your living room.

Original LP with four bonus tracks

Ike and Tina Turner's debut album for Sue Records, released in 1961.

Well-known for her trademark legs, throaty voice, and boundless stage energy, Tina Turner was one of the sexiest and most popular international performers of the 20th century. Ike Turner, a well established seminal figure in the early years of rock & roll as both a performer and talent scout, met her one night in St. Louis while he was performing with his Kings Of Rhythm: she just grabbed the microphone and sang a B.B. King song, impressing Ike so immediately and overwhelmingly that he asked her to perform regularly with them. The rest is history: Ike's slick managing skills and songwriting, along with Tina's intensely energetic lead voice, three back-up 'Ikettes' and a technically airtight eight-piece band produced a combination of country blues, rock and roll, ghetto rhythm and gospel passion that created a legend lasting 50 years. It's Gonna Work Out Fine, I Pity the Fool, I Idolize You, and Tra La La La La. are just some of the R&B gems included in their 1960 astonishing debut album.
