Listen to the first couple of cuts from the Black Lips' self-titled debut album and it sounds like you've uncovered yet another nuevo-garage rock band with an extra shot of punk rock attitude. All well and good, but let the album sink in and you realize these kids have a bit more up their sleeves -- the tres-wasted psychedelia of Freakout, the creepy blues crawl of Stone Cold and Down and Out, and the free-form dementia of You're Dumb prove these guys have been absorbing their influences from any number of less than wholesome sources.1 Throw It Away

Vikingligr VeldiPressed On White Vinyl
Vikingligr Veldi (Icelandic meaning roughly Glorious Viking Square) is the debut studio album by Norwegian metal band Enslaved. It was originally released in 1994, through Deathlike Silence Productions, the record label run by Euronymous, who was killed before the album's release. The album is dedicated to him.
Despite Enslaved's nationality, the lyrics on this album are mainly in Icelandic, perhaps due to its resemblance to Old Norse. The lyrics of Heimdallr are in ancient Norwegian. The distinct cover features the grave-good helm uncovered at the Sutton Hoo site in England, ostensibly belonging to the 7th century bretwalda, Raedwald of East Anglia1. The Shine (Awaiting Repress)One of the most distinctive and respected songwriters of the Deep South, Tony Joe White, gets raw and real on his new record THE SHINE, set for a September 28 release on his own Swamp Records. THE SHINE is a stripped-down collection of ten new White-penned songs that beautifully lays bare his rich, nuanced baritone, and distinctive brand of swampy southern soul.
While Whites critically acclaimed Uncovered featured a slew of special guests including Eric Clapton, Mark Knopfler, Michael McDonald and J.J. Cale, THE SHINE is all about White. He produced and recorded the album himself in his home studio outside Nashville. From the first whispery notes of Season Man, in which he recounts an ominous dream, to the records closing track, A Place to Watch the Sun Go Down, THE SHINE is an album of understated beauty and beguiling mystery.1. DubnobasswithmyheadmanUnderworld's debut arrived as a fully formed statement of intent. Its' nine tracks showcased the limitless possibilities of electronic music. Although born
out of club culture, Dubnobass defied the accepted genres of the time - equally suited to the dancefloor and the after party, it was as immersive an
experience quaking through bassbins or headphones. Two decades on from its original release, it's unarguable that Dubnobasswithmyheadman is one of
the most influential British electronic records of all time; a signpost for everything from dance music's easy relationship with main stages at festivals to the
radio/globe-conquering EDM phenomenon.
To celebrate Dubnobasswithmyheadman's twentieth anniversary, the record has been meticulously remastered at Abbey Road for a deluxe reissue by the
band's Rick Smith. Revisiting the original MIDI files, Rick uncovered a wealth of previously unreleased material and rare alternate
mixes that sit alongside the record's original companion singles and remixes and offer a fascinating insight into the creation of the record. The resultant
release is the definitive version of one of those rare records that truly deserves to be described as a classic.LP 1

I Love YouLia Mice is the experimental pop project of Eleanor C Mice (nÉe Logan). After spending her teens touring Australia in punk and soul groups she lurked the Brooklyn noise scene for half a decade. In late 2012 at the end of a European tour in support of her debut solo album (originally released under the moniker Happy New Year) she became stranded in France when her return flight to Brooklyn was cancelled due to Hurricane Sandy. Waiting for her replacement flight, she passed the time in Lyon penning songs in a friend's living room. Within a week she had decided to relocate to France for good. The songs became the genesis of 'I Love You', out October 7 on Old Flame Records - LiaMice's second solo album, and first experiment in danceable tempos, inspired by new music uncovered during in her first year living in France: in the grooves of yÉ-yÉ singles; on the dancefloors of converted boat-venues; in the theme songs of classic French cinema and on the iPods of neighborhood house parties.1. Includes LP Insert With Unreleased Photos And Interviews With Puddy Lion And Linval Thompson
Although his lack of touring kept him from being established as a major figure in
overground reggae circles, Linval Thompson's work as a singer, songwriter and
producer is essential to Jamaican music. Between 1977 and 1979, he released
five solo albums and produced countless artists on the side. Thompson acted as
a mentor to many up-and-comers, including Junjo Lawes, Scientist, and Eek-AMouse.
As dancehall became more prominent in the late 1970s, Thompson began to
offer up his rhythms to sound system deejays. The mysterious deejay LP, Bunny
Lion Red was originally released on London's Starlight records in 1979. Little was
written about the album at the time; however, we have uncovered that Bunny
Lion is in fact the legendary Puddy Roots of Killamanjaro Soundsystem fame.
Red features ten grooving Thompson Sound rhythms voiced by Puddy. This is
the earliest documented work of the criminally under-recorded Puddy Roots. It's

REDI-SUN-7316xThe Shadows of Knight
Live 1966Besides releasing two classic longplayers and many more singles (including the smash, "Gloria"), touring/behaving badly all across America and appearing on TV shows like 'Upbeat' and 'Where The Action Is', the Shadows of Knight also ruled at suburban Chicago's hands-down hippest teen club, The Cellar. Over the decades, their Cellar performances have become the stuff of legend.
Miraculously, two reels of tape of the Shadows of Knight live on stage at the Cellar (in 1966!) were eventually uncovered by Sundazed. As early as their 'Gloria' album debut in spring '66, the Shadows of Knight had separated themselves from the garage band pack with a heavily Chicago Blues-based, wildly rocking repertoire. Their trademark sound is on full display in this attitude-drenched, anarchic live recording from late in that exalted year.
For this expanded edition, the original sets and correct song sequence have been faithfully restored. And to top that, additional and until now completely unheard bonus material is rescued from those old reels. Specifically, added to an already scorching set are previously-unheard takes of "Peepin' and Hidin'" (sung by blues legend Joe Kelley), "Willie Jean" (with a vocal from drummer Tom Schiffour) and "Any Way That You Want Me". Equally important, the packaging now equals the musical contents thanks to an all-new, eye grabbing sleeve highlighted by John Hora's amazing original photography from '66.
Unlike their comparatively harnessed studio recordings, the Shadows of Knight are presented here raw 'n' alive, sloppy bordering on brilliant and with all the subtlety of a bulldozer. Would you want 'em any other way?1. Everybody Needs Somebody to Love

The MountainThe Heartless Bastards' story starts in Dayton, Ohio, where Erika Wennerstrom found the name on a multiple choice video trivia game at a bar. As a songwriting teenager during a time when GBV and Brainiac were packing local bars and three of the Breeders were still in town, Wennerstrom used to sneak into clubs to check out the scene. I would just see those people, my music heroes, hanging out at the bar like everyone else, she remembers. I could see myself in them. It gave me inspiration to do my own thing. After doing the usual business of playing local shows, the trio set out the following year on a regional tour. One of the first gigs of the trip took them to a bar in Akron, where Black Keys' drummer Patrick Carney just happened to be one of only a handful of people in the audience. This chance encounter led Wennerstrom and the Heartless Bastards to Fat Possum Records, with whom they released their debut, Stairs and Elevators, in early 2005.
The band moved on with critical praise in their back pocket, including a four-and-a-half star review from Rolling Stone, which took note that, when Wennerstrom opens her throat on Stairs and Elevators she sounds like shes wailing on the shoulders of giants; her sad and angry vocals channeling all the swagger and spit of a young Robert Plant. All This Time, was released during the summer of 2006, it received even more widespread critical acclaim than Stairs and Elevators. The Bastards played hundreds of shows to support the record. They played huge festivals and toured with Wilco and Lucinda Williams. Wennerstroms songs appeared often on TV shows and in films, this would be measured by most as a huge success. Though in Wennerstroms mind her sound and band were still evolving, and she knew it was time for a change.
In true ascetic discipline, she moved to Austin, Texas in 2007 for a change of inspirational scenery and a new recording project. With the help of producer Mike McCarthy (Spoon, Trail of Dead), she assembled a group of musicians with whom she gave the songs life and uncovered yet another layer of herself and the Heartless Bastards. The two new Bastards arent Texas ringers, but fellow Dayton brethren Dave Colvin on drums, and Jesse Ebaugh on bass, who actually played on the original demo that hooked Fat Possum. The album, entitled The Mountain, delivers the powerful howl that fans expect from the Heartless Bastards, but also weaves in adventure with mandolins, banjos, strings and Erikas transcendent voice.1. Candy-OHow did the Cars move beyond their smash 1978 debut (also available on Mobile Fidelity 180-gram LP) and secure their status as one of musics leading bands for years to come? Look no further than the quadruple-platinum Candy-O. Continuing along the streamlined pop paths of its predecessor, the sophomore effort is preoccupied with desirable women that are as mysterious, sexy, and cool as the groups musicand the records pin-up cover.
With rare exception, few new-wave artists enjoyed much of a career outside of a one-hit wonder. Candy-O proves the Cars were anything but. Its loaded with minimalist atmospherics, pulsing bass lines, catchy refrains, and labyrinthine synthesizers that stick in your mind for days. And while retaining a simplicity thats a Cars hallmark, the album also takes myriad stylistic detours: the glam-rock accents of Dangerous Type, a song whose title references the records mysterious and lusty matter; the percolating riffs of the contagious title track; the dizzying garage-rock nature of the upbeat Got a Lot on My Mind, complete with a tooting Farfisa organ. Nothing drags or feels out of place.
Through it all, vocalists Benjamin Orr and Ric Ocasek keep their heads about themselves, singing in direct albeit detached tones that convey the tension, excitement, and risky promise inherent in the lyrics. Hook-laced choruses abound. Yet all is not what it seems.
Hooks are mechanical by nature, but the affectlessness of these deserves special mention; only listeners who consider alienation is the craze a great insight will find much meaning here. On the other hand, only listeners who demand meaning in all things will find this useless. Cold and thin, shiny and hypnotic, it's what [the Cars] do best--rock and roll that is definitely pop without a hint of cuteness. Robert Christgau, The Consumer Guide
Half-speed mastered from the original analog tapes, Mobile Fidelitys numbered limited-edition LP brings the Cars distinctive melodies and exotic arrangements to the fore in ways that have never been heard outside of the recording studio. For the first time, Roy Thomas Bakers vocal production shines, with each members contributions rescued from a cold sonic murk that detracted from the musics impact on both vinyl and the extremely compressed CD. Once you hear the newly uncovered dynamics and rich textures, youll be wondering where they were all of these years. Chalk this up as an essential addition to your pop collection.

I Wanna Be AroundRecorded during his peak era, Tony Bennetts I Wanna Be Around continues the crooners upward trajectory as he nestles into a superb batch of heartfelt ballads, softly swinging pop, and frisky bossa nova with the kind of charm, control, and coolness reserved for a legend. The follow-up to the singers breakthrough I Left My Heart In San Francisco (also available from Mobile Fidelity on 180g LP), this 1963 set is every bit its predecessors equal. Read: A bonafide vocal classic.
Half-speed mastered from the original master tapes, Mobile Fidelitys numbered limited-edition 180g LP presents Bennett in to-die-for sound. Amazingly, this landmark recording has lavished in the vaults over the years and longed for the restoration that meticulous engineering can bring. Gone is the veiled haze that hung over the orchestrations, artificial ceiling that held back the highs, and cloudiness that obscured the entire range of Bennetts vocals. And were not just talking about the inferior digital editions. Previously unheard degrees of warmth, expressiveness, and detailing are just some of the newly uncovered aspects of this majestic recording.
Pairing again with producer Ernie Altschuler and pianist Ralph Sharon, and adding the skills of expert arranger Marty Manning, Bennett navigates his way through heavenly pop territory, turning phrases that bridge myriad moods and feelingswistful, romantic, sentimental, longing, happy, autumnalwhile making listeners feel each and every word that seemingly tumble out of his mouth. Bennett fully invests himself in the performances. And part of the appeal is just how relaxed he remains, a trait that helped him propel both the title track and The Good Life into Top 20 hits.
Decades before hed join the likes of Bono for a Duets album that reprised some of the classic material found here, Bennett perfected on I Wanna Be Around a traditional vocal pop sound that is best described as the touch of velvet. His mellow singing spans from conversational to soaring, his timbre sensational and note-perfect. Bennett inhabits the lyrics as if every song were expressly written for his voice. Whats more, the arrangements remain sympathetic, neither over- nor underdone, resulting in a superb combination of color, style, sophistication, and suaveness.
Mobile Fidelitys collectible 180g LP resonates with standard-setting transparency, imaging, projection, smoothness, and dimensionality. Capturing a human voice remains the most difficult recording task. Suffice it to say that this LP will join the ranks of the very best recordings you own. And of course, the music is on the same elevated level as the sound.

Forever ChangesRanked 40/500 on Rolling Stone Magazine's 500 Greatest Albums of All Time.
The third and final album by the original Love lineup, Forever Changes has consistently drawn epic praise both upon its 1968 release on Elektra Records and to this very day. Rolling Stone described Forever Changes as "elegant armageddon" when listing it as #40 in the 500 Greatest Albums Of All Time while another rave review considered it, "one of the most distinctive masterpieces in that era of masterpieces." A landmark work that is without question the L.A.-based psychedelic folk-rock pioneers' most fully realized studio effort, Forever Changes was produced by band co-founder/frontman Arthur Lee and The Doors' engineer/producer Bruce Botnick.
Lee's metaphysically super-logical lyrics, warbled sweetly over the band's full-bloom psychedelia, a swirling current of guitars, strings, and horns layered into a mind-expanding wall of beauty. The album's song titles read like signs along the long and winding road to Nirvana: "Andmoreagain," "Maybe The People Would Be The Times Or Between Clark And Hilldale," "The Good Humor Man He Sees Everything Like This," "You Set The Scene." Forever Changes exploded the personal into the universal and uncovered the eternal tucked away inside the familiar.
"In the summer of 1967 a billboard appeared on Los Angeles' legendary Sunset Strip telling all who looked skyward to 'watch for the third coming of LOVE.' Emblazoned with an image of the group painted in oozing pink, purple, blue, and green meant to resemble an organic heart, Love were barely recognizable in their collective obscurity. Though they had followed hot on the heels of The Byrds to rule the L.A. club scene a year earlier, the band (at the time perhaps the most progressive and uncompromising in pop) never made the leap to mainstream acceptance or the Billboard Top 10. Ironically, that same summer their Elektra labelmates and former opening act, The Doors hit #1 with 'Light My Fire.' Meanwhile, the five members of Love (Arthur Lee, Johnny Echols, Bryan MacLean, Ken Forssi, and Michael Stuart) struggled to complete an album that would barely chart on initial release. In most stories Love would be the group that promised more than they delivered. That would be had 'the third coming' not been Forever Changes, a long-player widely rated above any other waxing of that idyllic era." - Andrew Sandoval/liner notes for the 2008 reissue1. FlagFlag is Classic JT: At-Home Folk Arrangements, Soft-Rock Coziness, Captivating Emotion
Narratives on 1979 Gem Peer into the Heart of Everyman and Everywoman
Mastered from the Original Master Tapes: Sonics As Mellifluous As Taylor's Voice on a Cool Summer Night
JT and Dad Loves His Work Also Available on 180g LP from Mobile Fidelity
James Taylor was an interesting place when he recorded the colossally underrated Flag. Fresh off his double-platinum J.T. (also available from Mobile Fidelity), the artist who defines the singer-songwriter genre had just collaborated with Art Garfunkel and Carly Simon, undertaken a Broadway musical, and become more active in political affairs. All these factors contribute to this 1979 treasure, which finds Taylor plying more of his trademark mellow vibes and insightful, soul-gazing lyrics.
While Flag has been previously remastered for CD, its never been sourced from the original analog master tapes. Mobile Fidelitys brilliant-sounding 180g LP is, and the results are as spectacular as chilling out to Taylors mellifluous voice on a summer night. Flush with exquisite acoustic textures, beautiful tonalities, and studio-perfect dynamics, this audiophile version brings Taylors music to life like never before.
Having landed in the Top Ten and sold more than two million copies, Flag nonetheless remains one of Taylors most under-appreciated efforts. And its not because the content is lacking. The beloved singer enters his hallmark storytelling mode on Sleep Come Free Me and dizzies the senses with the beloved Rainy Day Man. Drawing from his musical Working (based on legendary author Studs Terkels book of the same name), Millworker and Brother Trucker are lessons in character studies, Taylors narratives peering into the heart of blue-collar America and reflecting his knack for the everymanand everywoman.
Similarly, a pair of coversUp on the Roof and Day Trippershow his knack for reverent interpretation as well as originality. Flag reveals why we love JT. The literary descriptiveness, at-home folk arrangements, soft-rock fireplace coziness, captivating emotion, faithful tones, and stellar sense of instrumental placement, be it backing vocals, nuanced percussion, pedal-steel guitar, or subtle horns, the latter courtesy of do-it-all saxophonist David Sanborn. Alas, many of these facets have long gone unnoticed.
Ever since its original release, Flag has been plagued with muddled sound. No longer. Mobile Fidelitys analog reissue unlocks the well-kept sonic secrets and floods the record with the intimacy and impact that have always lurked underneath the surface. Finally, Taylors finite acoustic playing, well-mannered melodies, reflective words, and refined singing are experienced as a whole. The amount of new musical information thats been uncovered will boggle the minds of even the most ardent Taylor fans.
Trust us: Flag is one of Taylors finest works. After three decades, hear it all for yourself. And discover what is certain to become of your new favorite records.

Angel Guts: Red ClassroomAngel Guts: Red Classroom is the beginning of Xiu Xiu's descent from grayness into the deepest blackness endurable. It is the sound of Xiu Xiu's death.
This is a bold proposition, even for a band that has never so much pushed the envelope as pulled it (forcefully) away from the line other musicians are willing to toe. And now, in what is unquestionably their darkest hour, Xiu Xiu have lit the envelope on fire and are using it as a torch to light the path ahead.
Having spent the previous four years living in North Carolina, primary songwriter Jamie Stewart relocated to Los Angeles, moving blindly into a neighborhood whose notoriously dangerous reputation was unknown to him.
A park divided among four gangs, a lake routinely dragged for bodies, a building wherein two infant skeletons were recently uncovered -- the aura of his new home bleeds into every pore of the album, each lyric and note bearing traces of its essence: the terrible beauty, the despair, the violence, the ultra humanity, the uncertainty.
I know to a degree I must have romanticized it, Stewart admits, But when it's not safe to go out at night, what else can one?
Romanticized is hardly the word anyone other than Stewart would use. Like its namesake, a Japanese erotic noir film, Angel Guts: Red Classroom is as radical as it is inventive. The subject matter -- racialized sex, double suicide, double penetration, criminality, fear of physical harm -- is unsuitable for the faint of heart. But when the heart has stopped beating, only the soul remains to carry on. And here, Stewart transcribes his without boundaries.
Your face is down alone / On your desk / At the end of the city / You were squashed into / There is no one you love. So begins the album's first verse.
In the wrong hands, such topics could be rendered as far-fetched fantasies. But Stewart's evocative vocals lend his provocative lyrics the balance they need, grounding them in a stark realism that forces us to acknowledge their existence, even confront them (as discomforting as that is).
Unsettling, too, is the music. Working with only analog synths, drum set, and 1970's analog drum machines, Xiu Xiu has never before sounded so focused, so captivating, so intent on delivering a kick to the throat.
Though influences can be cited (Suicide, Kraftwerk, Nico, EinstÜrzende Neubauten), they are ultimately far less relevant than the mark this album will leave on other musicians and music fans from this point forward.
Take Stupid in the Dark -- its tone ominous and pulsing, its harmonies simple and direct, its grip unrelenting. Or Botanica de Los Angeles, a sparse, yet undeniably anthemic merging of bruising drums and bone-rattling bass synths.
Unbearably dark, yet incredibly illuminating, on the John Congleton-produced Angel Guts: Red Classroom Xiu Xiu continues to forge (and at times risk) its reputation as avant-garde pioneers. It is the work of a band unraveling to its core and exposing the boldness within.

The Banished HeartHouston-based progressive metal outfit, OCEANS OF SLUMBER, have just announced the release of their forthcoming full-length album, "The Banished Heart", via Century Media Records!
Singer Cammie Gilbert comments, Guided by our resolve to only make music that is real to us, we explored a new depth and crawled deep inside ourselves to uncover what had been hiding and bring it out into the light. Sometimes in life there are places where we are able to turn away, to get away with applying the utilities of denial, but not this time. This time we forced ourselves to stay in that uncomfortable and terrifying place. To explore its vast and dark void in hopes of uncovering a better path out of it, not only for ourselves, but for all those familiar with that same dark place within themselves.LP 1

EndtroducingWhat resonated about Endtroducing when it was released in 1996, and what makes it still resonate today, is the way in which it loosens itself from the mooring of the known and sails off into an uncharted territory that seems to exist both in and out of time. Davis is not only a master sampler and turntablist supreme, he is also a serious archeologist with a world-thirsty passion for seeking out, uncovering and then ripping apart the discarded graces of some other generation, that pile of broken dreams, and sewing them back together into a tapestry of chronic bleakness and beauty. - Eliot Wilder1. Moon PixCat Power's stirring 1998 album Moon Pix, her fourth overall, continued Chan Marshall's evolution from indie-rock queen to reflective, accomplished songstress. The addition of The Dirty Three's Mick Turner and Jim White here also adds new depth to the proceedings as they gracefully complement Marshall's compelling, intricate guitar lines and gently insistent vocals to fine effect. Moon Pix is a soulful collection of songs that begins to truly uncover the raw power and emotional vulnerability that would inform Marshall's work from here on out.
