    Unsung Heroes

Titled `Unsung Heroes' and produced by Hiili Hiilesmaa (HIM, Sentenced, Apocalyptica, etc.), this is the hour-plus follow-up to 2009's `From Afar', and sees the Finnish five-piece, founded in 1995, pushing their signature sound to bold new heights of drama and excess. A cinematic experience from first note to last, `Unsung Heroes' takes the listener on a journey of genuine light & shade, with the 16 minute-plus `Passion Proof Power' showing that when it comes to the epic statement, Ensiferum are very much in the front-line, swords at the ready. 'We've tried to push the different aspects of what we do as far as we can,' reflects the band, 'the sonic scope is wider than ever. The folk elements go further down that path and the metallic parts will absolutely rip your face off!' Once again, album art has been supplied by Kristian Wahlin, with featured special guests including members of Apokalyptischen Reiter plus legendary Finnish singer & actor, Vesa-Matti Loiri.

    Fallen Angels

The First Limited Edition Pressing of Fallen Angels Will Come With Two Bonus Tracks, Annunaki Legacy and Blackened Blues

Venom, the hugely influential UK outfit now celebrating a full 30 years since the release of their Welcome To Hell debut, will have a brand new studio album released on November 20th via Spinefarm Records.

Titled Fallen Angels and featuring 13 fresh recordings produced by main-man/bassist Cronos, this is the follow-up to 2008's Hell release, and sees the trio (completed by guitarist Rage and drummer Dante) adopting a style highly redolent of classic early Venom with modern studio technology employed only to increase the general level of natiness.

Says Cronos: We make an album, it usually take a few tracks to get into the vibe, although this album's vibe was very much present during the ideas stage...everything came together so naturally.
We started throwing ideas together on the South American tour, and then again during the live shows of 2010, and so we knew from the start that we had some amazing new songs to make a great album.

With any new album, you look for a few songs to put into the live set, although that is going to be very difficult with this record, as we can nail the entire album live if we want!

    Seventh Swamphony

Seventh Swamphony is the seventh studio album by the Finnish melodic death metal band Kalmah and is their first album with new keyboardist Veli-Matti Kananen. The album was recorded at Tico-Tico Studios in Kemi, Finland, and was mixed and mastered by Jens Bogren.

Few would deny that in the late 1990s and very early 2000s, Finnish death metal began shifting it's direction across the board. Although Amorphis themselves never lost any stride, the whole 'depression metal' thing just kinda faded away, to be replaced by something far more aggressive and energetic. Bands such as Children of Bodom, Norther, and Insomnium broke through with a sound that although was still firmly rooted in the brutality of death metal, were not too shy to throw in the occasional thrash and black metal influence to in turn create something new and exciting. With the exception of perhaps the aforementioned Insomnium, Kalmah had always been perhaps the most flat-out extreme and agro, and has steadily upped the ante with every succeeding release.

Right from the get-go, this disc opens up with a synth-hit-infused blasting skank-beat that flows easily into the pit-worthy yet SUPER-catchy chorus. This kind of sets the tone for this whole disc, and you get eight incredibly intense-yet-focus fistpumping/headbanging perfect examples of memorably melodic death metal that oozes every ounce of brutality that it can out of the riffage contained herein. A theme that is echoed in practically every song they've ever done is their effortless use of solemn, slightly-folksy lead guitar melodies on top of the high-energy thrashy rhythms underneath. Songs such as Deadfall and Wolves On The Throne are amazing and true-to-form for this band; heavy on melody and light on respite. The former song also features a glimpse of the ivory-tickling prowess of new keyboardist Veli-Matti Kananen, who in both his melody lines and also in his soloing has an almost youthful whimsy as he jams up and down the board. Once you notice it for the first time, you tend to notice that this may be one of the most keyboard-heavy albums the band has ever done, but that is because this may be the first time since 2002 that the band's keyboardist has had anything meaningful to add to the table in terms of songwriting. Maybe that's a bit drastic, but that's sure what it sounds like here, and that isn't to say that the omnipresent keys drown out the massive wall of guitar and bass. Antti Kokko is still one of underground metal's unknown guitar heroes with how deftly he weaves his melody lines through these tracks, and never mind how ridiculous his solos are. Need a point of reference? He's a straight-faced, serious, no-B.S. version of Alexi Laiho. And his brother Pekka Kokko's voice has never sounded better either, easily crossing from the higher-pitched, black metal-version of Mille Petrozza he always used to do on the older records with the flat-out demonic growl he's wielded since the masterful The Black Waltz album. He even manages to weave in a bit of clean singing for the first time that I can remember hearing on a Kalmah record, and speaking of which...

...remember how in the first paragraph we kind of stated that the melancholic Finnish death metal of yesteryear has been kind of hard to find as of late? Well, Kalmah decided to dish out their own version in fourth track Hollo. After listening to it maybe 10 times now, I've realized that I just need to stop the internal dialogue on whether or not it's a good direction for the band and instead just focus on how amazing the song itself is. For most of the track it really is one of the best pieces of old school Amorphis-worship that I've ever heard, before doing a Viking metal shift about halfway through, complete with calling horns and battle-ready gang vocals. Apart from this tune, the most that Kalmah otherwise deviates from what they know works is the almost-punky opening of Windlake Tale.

A lot of people unfairly write this band off as Bodom clones, and it's really unfortunate when they put out such amazingly dark and heavy records like this that really set them apart. If anything, I feel that this record will continue to appease Kalmah's core fanbase who've stuck it out since the beginning, but with it's perfect mixjob (except for some questionable leveling of the opening melody of Wolves on the Throne) where everything comes through crisp and clear (or as crisp and clear as a band as loud and agro as this likes to get), it can be an easy-to-get-into album for those still uninitiated.

    Horns & Halos

Horns And Halos' - mixed by Petri Majuri at Seawolf Studios, Finland - is the follow-up to 2011's critically-acclaimed 'Sensory Overdrive', winner of Classic Rock Magazine's 'Album Of The Year' and a No. 1 record in MM's Finnish homeland.

It's been a while since that brilliant piece of work that was Sensory Overdrive, just enough time for a job well done. No need to rush, especially when you have to re-adjust to song writing minus Ginger Wildheart.

So it happens that the irresistible poptastic element loses out a little bit to darker shades here and there, like on the rather unexpected 'Ritual' or 'Stained Glass Heart'; yet our blonde energy powerhouse doesn't fail to throw in unforgettable hooks - see 'Child Of The Revolution' or rock party anthem 'Saturday Night Special' - sure to get the crowd going on the next round of live shows.

The opening 'TNT Diet' breaks in raw and unmerciful, followed by the memories of an unforgotten NY past in single 'Ballad of the Lower East Side'. There's a touch of classic/bluesy, even a hint of prog in 'Eighteen Angels', then it's strokes of bright colours and grey shades on the familiar coarse canvas that is Michael's voice. The unmistakeable soundscape courtesy of Sami Yaffa, Steve Conte, Dregen and Karl Rosqvist ensures continuity despite sparks of unusual - let 'Soul Surrender' surprise you - leaving fans happy yet never bored.

It's not 'Sensory Overdrive', but 'Horns and Halos' was definitely worth the wait. No album, doesn't matter how good, should ever be written twice as long as you have any music left in you; Michael Monroe, luckily, still has a lot left to offer.

On 24 February 1999, three men held a meeting at the borders of the PÄÄskÜla bog in Estonia, in the singer and guitar player Markus's basement, one of
whom could play a little bit of guitar, another who knew how to play a little bit of drums, and a third who had come up with a sufficiently ancient-sounding
name that would be just right for a heavy metal band - 'Metsatöll' (the name Metsatöll is an ancient Estonian euphemism for wolf). Jump 14 years, over
500 performances and 70,000 sold records later and we get to 2013 - the year KARJAJUHT was brought to life in the studio.

2013 took off to a flying start - Metsatöll gave two gigs for the soldiers of Estonia, USA, UK and Denmark in Afghanistan, at the Helman province.
Followed by a trip to Southern Asia, the band went on a European tour with Korpiklaani (FIN) - 40 shows were given in 15 countries. And from June to
October, the band recorded its new album KARJAJUHT at Roundsound studio, performed at festivals and in November set out on a 32 show tour in North
America with Finntroll (FIN) and Blackguard (CAN). Altogether, the band played 107 concerts in 2013.

    Time To Die

A cultural as well as a musical force, ELECTRIC WIZARD has left an indelible mark on a host of different genres, the likes of doom, stoner and sludge; at heart, however, they stand as an iconic British metal band, cast in the great tradition, with lyrics and artwork reflecting the hypnotic weight of the music, and subject to the same intelligence and detail.

Wreathed in occult ritual and drug-culture references, with classic '70s horror an inspirational seam, ELECTRIC WIZARD is poised to turn a page; there's the new deal with Spinefarm Records, plus - after a nine-year hiatus - the return of Mark Greening (the drummer on Dopethrone), who completes the lineup of Oborn, American guitarist Liz Buckingham, a key member since 2003, and new bassist Clayton Burgess (SATAN'S SATYRS).

Fueled by strong emotion and the harder sounds of late-'60s Detroit, the remodeled lineup - isolated by choice, giant stacks glowing red - set about crafting an eighth studio album to both rival and exceed the milestone recordings of the past, with Buckingham keeping things suitably monolithic and the band generally looking back to some of their earliest influences. Toerag Studios in London was once again charged with capturing The Sound, and (encouragingly) words like raw, hateful and sickeningly heavy are being traded.

Founding member Jus Oborn said the following: All of our albums in the past have had a theme - revenge, drugs, black magick - and the theme of this one is death. Of course, death to us really means rebirth, so this album is a manifestation of a very primal occult belief in the final sacrifice. We have gone full circle - it was inevitable, but we had to do it. We had to kill the band so we could be reborn. It was the only way to ensure we could come back even stronger.

    MASSIVE ADDICTIVE (Awaiting Repress)

Gothenburg's finest, AMARANTHE, have completed their third strike. As per the band's custom, "MASSIVE ADDICTIVE" was tracked at Hansen Studios
in Ribe, Denmark with the sound sorcerer Jacob Hansen (Volbeat, Epica etc.) at the helm.

"MASSIVE ADDICTIVE" features some of the best Amaranthe material to date. In addition to the divine duality of pulsating beats and melodic pop
choruses both of which we're accustomed to hear from them, rejuvenated Amaranthe now caters to us further advanced dynamics, a cornucopia of
celestial choruses and of course, sheer melodic bliss. Best known for their danceable upbeat anthems, the band surely has a handful of instant
Amaranthe classics on "MASSIVE ADDICTIVE" such as Trinity and the most contagious chorus of the album, Digital World.

Although already in possession of winning receipt, Amaranthe won't settle for resting on their laurels. Not to tread water, the band has taken to update
their sound so now you'll hear contemporary influences never used before in Amaranthe's songs before such as breakdowns, dubstep, voice studders
and delays. But that's not to say that Amaranthe has forgotten where their fortes lie - as always, song is king.

But it's the whole that has improved. Olof's surgical riffs and soaring solos, Morten's sturdy rhythmic backbone, Johan's booming low-frequency assault,
Elize's ever more emotive singing, Jake's melodic vocal outpour and the new screamer Henrik Englund Wilhelmsson all put together combine for an
entirely new spectrum of nuances. Yes, they've always been ear candy, but now with their MASSIVE updated sound, Amaranthe is more ADDICTIVE
    than ever.

    Santa Cruz

Reared on a hefty diet of 80's glam rock Americana á la Guns N' Roses and such, Santa Cruz are a rock 'n' roll sensation, who, despite their very young age have hosted numerous rock clubs of their own in their native Hellsinki Rock City, scoring hordes of stark-raving-mad fans and reaping attention and endorsements from peers and media alike. The German rock magazine Stalker even recommends it to their readers that they plan their Finnish vacations around Santa Cruz's tour dates.
If there ever was a band that looks completely out of place in their hometown, it would have to be Santa Cruz. Whereas contemplating suicide in a snowdrift, drunk out of one's skull, comes naturally for the inherently dark and brooding Finns, something as sunny, positive and unlawfully h-h-h-hot as Santa Cruz shouldn't probably be even possible on these semi-Arctic ice-ridden shores! It's just that tracks like "High on You" with its shimmering harmonies, rabidly energetic "Let's Get the Party Started" and "Aiming High" which probably possesses the sickest guitar riff in Finnish rock and metal this side of 1986, will prove to you, the Santa Cruz brand of rock 'n' roll works like an intravenous shot of Adrenaline! The top-notch songwriting and guitar chops from Hell will leave your jaws ajar and with Archie's unbridled yelps, at times you'd be willing to bet your cojones that it's the ghost of Bill Bailey singing - no small feat considering that Mr. Bailey is still very much alive! No wonder the Santa Cruz gigs are infamous of getting a wee bit unhinged at times!

Without further ado, let's round it out with the endorsement of a guy who knows what the f**k he's talking about: "Never mind that they are young, 'cuz the matter of the fact is, that Santa Cruz definitely sticks out from all these retro hair metal bands running around nowadays. Not only do they have the attitude and the looks, but most importantly they sure as hell know how to play and the songs along with the awesome guitar playing pretty much makes me wanna bang my head in two pieces when I see them play live. And after all that's what it's all about. End of fucking story!!!" -Alexi Laiho / CHILDREN OF BODOM

The classic Nightwish album, Oceanborn, Released on Double Vinyl LP. Completely Remastered and Featuring Live Tracks

First of all, Oceanborn is a huge step when thinking about Nightwish's debut album, Angels Fall First. All the elements of folk music and ambience are forgotten, and instead Nightwish have concentrated on using Tarja Turunen's wide voice and playing pure heavy metal. Or, well, another description could be opera metal. Drama and a variety of melodies are used and effective, but overrule all expectations. Songs are catchy and have a long lifetime. Also, the whole band does great work- Holopainen and Vuorinen use their instruments with patience and don't slope into unneeded tricking.

    Wishmaster (Awaiting Repress)

The classic Nightwish album, Wishmaster, Released on Double Vinyl LP - Completely Remastered

Oceanborn wasn't just a hit in Finland, it also opened new doors for Nightwish abroad. So naturally, the pressure to come up with a comparable sophomore album was enormous. Rarely does a band fulfill the demands of a second album successfully, and Nightwish is no exception. Even though Wishmaster is mainly targeted to radio and pop audiences, it does succeed somewhat. Even more demanding listeners will find this as enjoyable as they did Oceanborn. The same patterns repeat, and every track's hook is based on a powerful intro and a simple chorus. Their charm is in their overflowing drama and, as it was on their first album, the whole concept can be described as operatic metal.

Amaranthe, the cutting edge outfit with the triple lead vocal attack, will release MAXIMALISM via Spinefarm. It's a hyper-modern, metallic beast produced by Jacob Hansen (Volbeat). The band deliver tracks that fully live up to the bigger, bolder promise of the title. Refusing to be pinned down by genre or convention, Amaranthe have consistently pursued the less-travelled path, blending sounds & styles to create a signature hybrid approach.
