    The Storm

ZZ Ward didn't have to look far for inspiration on her second full-length album, 2017's The Storm. Equally evocative of blues grit and hip-hop bounce, the Los Angeles-based vocal powerhouse and multi-instrumentalist leapt forward by taking a deeper look at some of her earliest inspirations including Howlin Wolf, Robert Johnson, and Vera Ward Hall and Big Mama Thornton.

For me, this album wasn't really about experimenting, she admits. It was more about simplicity, honing in on what I love about music and what makes me who I am as an artist. Growing up, I listened to a lot of hip-hop and blues, and I love those two genres so much. Sometimes, to evolve you don t need to go outside of yourself; you can reach further inside of yourself instead.

It s a realization earned over a whirlwind five years. The Fedora-rocking, guitar-shredding, harmonica-wielding blues siren peppered an old back porch musical recipe with hip-hop urgency and hashtaggable wisdom on her 2012 mixtape Eleven Roses. Followed by her full-length debut Til The Casket Drops yielded a veritable hit in the form of Put The Gun Down. The latter generated 7.4 million-plus Spotify streams and held strong in the Top 10 of AAA radio for 10 weeks as well as receiving over 100 high-profile licensing placements and syncs, including the feature film We re The Millers. Kendrick Lamar [ Cryin Wolf ] and Freddie Gibbs [ Criminal ] were quick to collaborate, while Rolling Stone, Guitar World, Elle, Interview Magazine, USA Today, NPR and more extolled her.

    Storm Of Life

Originally released in 1986, Storms of Life is the full-fledged debut album from country music throwback Randy Travis. Featuring the traditional country hits 1982, On the Other Hand, Diggin' Up Bones and No Place Like Home, the Kyle Lehning produced release was a massive success, setting the stage for country music's crossover appeal in the early '90s.

    Liberation Music Orchestra

A fascinating reissue that comfortably straddles the lines of jazz, folk, and world music, working up a storm by way of a jazz protest album that points toward the Spanish Civil War in particular and the Vietnam War in passing. Haden leads the charge and contributes material, but the real star here may in fact be Carla Bley, who arranged numbers, wrote several, and contributed typically brilliant piano work.

    The Truth Is...

The platinum-selling Vancouver quartet builds arena-ready hooks around hard rocking stories of good times, bad times and everything in between. "Lowlife, is a raucous anthem celebrating simple pleasures. Meanwhile, The Bitch Came Back gives a hilarious send-off to a bad ex with roaring guitars and flourishes of horns. Hurricane stirs up a storm of emotions over an orchestral hum of guitars and massive chorus. Then there's Head Above Water, which delivers an uplifting, contemplative message encased in mid-tempo rhythms. Theory of a Deadman are telling the whole truth and nothing but the truth, like it or not.

    Nations To Flames

New York metal alchemists, A STORM OF LIGHT, unleash their long-anticipated new studio offering in 2013 Entitled Nations To Flames, the 11-track follow up to the band's critically-lauded 2011 opus, As The Valley Of Death Becomes Us, Our Silver Memories Fade, was recorded with Travis Kammeyer (OCOAI, Generation Of Vipers) at Fahrenheit Studios in Johnson City, Tennessee, mixed with Matt Bayles (Isis, Soundgarden, Pearl Jam, Botch, Mastodon) at Red Room Recording in Seattle, Washington and mastered by Brad Boatright (Sleep, From Ashes Rise, Nails) at Audiosiege in Portland, Oregon. Additionally, Nations to Flames features Soundgraden's Kim Thayil and Indian/Nachtmystium's Will Lindsay on select tracks.

Centered around the apex of human failure, Nations To Flames bears witness to the fall of all governments, all nations, and all religions. The record is both musically and thematically captivating and marks the STORMcollective's darkest, most immediately punishing creation to date.

Comments A STORM OF LIGHT founding guitarist/vocalist Josh Graham "These songs are much more focused. Even the more 'epic' songs are shorter but still accomplish the same journey as the longer songs used to. We've ditched the rock elements of the last record and let our early influences of Killing Joke, Bad Brains, Metallica and Crash Worship seep in. We are bringing back the intensity of Black Ocean but with the speed and precision ore akin to our metal influences. While there are still some slower/sludgy tunes, some songs are twice as fast as the older material."

If there is a hint of mortality on Your Future Our Clutter, it's being dealt with by whipping up a white knuckle storm. Into their next decade with the same intensity they started, The Fall are once again at their most rampant. The album, like the band's current lineup, is lean and fast. The Fall at their forward moving, bone-shaking best.

    Ghosts (Awaiting Repress)

Female London-based duo Smoke Fairies are releasing Ghosts, a vinyl album compiling their first two singles and an EP, being issued by 453 Music.

Their unique interweaving of ethereal vocal harmonizing and swampland guitars draws inspiration from sources as seemingly contradictory as the rolling hills of the pair's native Sussex and the foothills of the Appalachian mountains; the smoky jazz cafes of New Orleans to the sunny meadows of the English countryside... try to pigeonhole the Smoke Fairies? You might as well try to capture a storm in a whisky bottle.

This music wells up from deep in their souls, sometimes dark, sometimes delicate and unmistakably shaped by a distinctly British sensibilities and filled with a delicious tension -- at once warm and haunting; soothing and unsettling. Following in the footsteps of artists like the Velvet Underground, Led Zeppelin (on their respective third albums), and Jefferson Airplane they've overhauled their musical roots and brought something new to the world. ''Frozen Heart,'' for instance, is a paean to love whose influences span five decades and all manner of traditional genres, putting all those the pieces together in a strikingly fresh and original way.

Now with four very collectible singles under their belts, (including a one-off on Jack White's label Third Man Records) they are established in the UK, and are selling out their own shows in the capital. In 2010, the North America beckons again as they release Ghosts and plan on extensive touring. They recently played at SXSW 2010 in Austin, TX in March and will begin touring North America May of this year, supporting Laura Marlin.

    Territory

Territory is the follow up to the Charlottetown band's Polaris Prize nominated and internationally acclaimed sophomore album, Little Jabs. Once again produced by Joel Plaskett, Territory builds on the promise of Little Jabs as the band continues to write and record sunny pop gems for the heart and head. The album also finds Two Hours Traffic discovering the shadows at the side of the road. Right from the get go this becomes apparent as the gold into lead alchemy of the rousing opener Noisemaker kicks in and by the time the title track tells its tale of disillusionment and betrayal you know you are settling in for a drive to the darker side. Indeed, songs such as Weightless One, Drop Alcohol, Wicked Side, and Lost Boys all explore the approaching dusk but just like the more hopeful tracks on the album (Happiness Burns, Sing A Little Hymn) they all lock into the close your eyes, sing along choruses and instantly memorable lyrics that have put Two Hours Traffic on the melodic map.

Initially conceived as a two-piece, lead singer Liam Corcoran and guitarist Alec O'Hanley recruited bassist Andrew MacDonald and drummer Derek Ellis while attending university in their hometown of Charlottetown, Prince Edward Island. After releasing their April Storm EP in 2003 a friendship was struck up with Halifax hero Joel Plaskett who offered to produce the band's first proper album. They've been working together ever since. While their eponymous debut and their follow up Isolator EP were received warmly by critics, it wasn't until 2007's breakthrough Little Jabs that the world really took notice. Appearing on dozens of year-end best of lists, Little Jabs also garnered an ECMA for Best Pop Recording and was a finalist for the coveted Polaris Music Prize.

    Low Country Blues

    Produced by T-Bone Burnett

Band Features Dr. John, Jay Bellerose, Doyle Bramhall II

Legendary Singer Interprets Classic Blues Songs by Likes of Muddy Waters and Magic Sam

As a founding member of the one and only Allman Brothers Band and in his own storied solo career, Gregg Allman has long been a gifted natural interpreter of the blues, his soulful and distinctive voice one of the defining sounds in the history of American music. Low Country Blues marks the legendary Rock & Roll Hall of Famer's seventh solo recording and first in more than 13 years. Produced by T Bone Burnett, the album finds Allman putting his own stamp on songs by some of the blues giants whose work has long informed his own, from Muddy Waters and BB King to Buddy Guy and Magic Sam. Named for the coastal Georgia region Allman calls home, Low Country Blues stands as a high water mark in an already remarkable body of work, rich with passion, verve, and the unerring confidence of a true survivor.

Though Allman has been a constant presence on the road over the past decade, with the Allman Brothers Band as well as with his own crack combo, he has spent precious little time in the studio since the 2002 death of producer Tom Dowd - the man behind the glass for much of his recorded career. So when his manager suggested he veer off from a 2009 tour for a Memphis meeting with the multiple Grammy Award-winning Burnett, Allman admits to being not entirely enthused.

I said, 'Oh man, I don't wanna start meeting a string of dudes, all of 'em trying to outdo the other one, he recalls. But we stopped in Memphis and here comes T Bone. The first sentence out of his mouth was something like, 'Tommy Dowd was The Man, wasn't he? I've patterned a lot of my stuff after that gentleman.' I thought, 'Right, what've we got here?'

The two musicians quickly bonded, chatting about favorite records, mutual friends, and reminiscences of Nashville's renowned clear channel station, WLAC, which introduced rhythm & blues music to a generation of late night listeners from New York to Miami. He told me some guy gave him a hard drive, it has 10,000 obscure blues songs, Allman says. He says, 'I'm gonna pick out twenty of 'em and send 'em to ya and you tell me what you think.' He said, 'They're old, like Billie Holliday old, and when you listen to 'em, I want you to think about us gettin' in there and about bringin' 'em up to today.'

Allman found the idea irresistible and in January 2010, a stunning combo was assembled at Los Angeles' The Village Recorder, comprising Burnett and Doyle Bramhall II on guitars, backed by the brilliant rhythm section of upright bassist Dennis Crouch and drummer Jay Bellerose. What's more, the lineup included a brass section arranged and conducted by trumpeter Darrell Leonard, whose illustrious resume extends back to his work with Delaney Bonnie & Friends (featuring Gregg's late, great brother Duane). As if that weren't enough, sitting in on piano was a dear old friend, the Night Tripper himself, Mac Dr. John Rebennack, with whom Allman co-wrote Let This Be A Lesson To Ya' on the Gregg Allman Band's 1977 classic, Playin' Up A Storm.

This powerhouse band - which of course also features Gregg's own acoustic guitar expertise and trademark Hammond B-3 organ - cooks up an earthy and atmospheric musical stew infused with gritty R&B muscle, spooky Southern psychedelia, and greasy deep soul grooves.

Like any genuine bluesman, Allman's own life has been colored by myriad triumphs and too many tragedies. Low Country Blues was initially slated for a mid-2010 release, but that plan changed when Gregg, who had long battled chronic Hepatitis C, was notified that he was a candidate for a liver transplant. In June 2010, he entered the Mayo Clinic in Jacksonville, Florida where he successfully underwent the difficult surgery. Knowing that he had only just made one of the defining albums of his recorded career proved to be the best medicine, giving Allman the inner strength he needed to fully heal.

    Agnus Dei (Awaiting Repress)

There is something about The Secret's sound that seems to entomb the listener in an ominousness that is comparable to the view of a great storm approaching on the horizon. One could say that if 2004's Luce was that approaching storm, and follow-ups Disintoxication and Solve Et Coagula were the storm wreaking havoc, Agnus Dei is the disaster of what is left in the wake. The result of something cataclysmic, with all its destruction, atrocity, and bleakness, is often far worse than the cataclysm itself. This is where the quartet now stands musically.

While past albums have begun with a foreboding track, setting the scene for what's to come, Agnus Dei allows no escape from its wrath from the moment it begins. The album title track presents The Secret's newest offering with such malevolence and decimating brutality that the listener is only left to wonder how much better it could possibly get.

Where Agnus Dei sacrifices melody, it births ingenuity and finesse. The album's overarching balance flows from track to track, and spills some interesting surprises along the way, all while consistently staying true to the intent of the music. Songs like Post Mortem Nihil Est and Love Your Enemy break up the perceived thrashy mold of the album; while the former is ushering in an atypical drum beat for a band of this stature, the latter delivers a fast-paced, guitar-droning intro that is careening towards utter pandemonium. Darkness I Became finishes off its severity with a battering ram of a riff, trudging into Heretic Temple, which could be classified as one of those ambience-builders that are everpresent within The Secret's repertoire. Album-ender Seven Billion Graves grimly points at an obvious picture, painted throughout the album, coming full circle. To put it frankly, there is not one moment of Agnus Dei that feels unwarranted.

Gathering is the 9th studio album from critically-acclaimed singer-songwriter Josh Ritter. It is the follow-up to 2015's Sermon On The Rocks, which debuted on Billboard #1 Folk Albums, #5 Vinyl Albums, #6 Rock Albums, #8 Independent Albums, and more.

    Regarding the record, Josh says:

This record is the product of a strange and interesting time. When I started writing Gathering, I felt tired of living in the shadow of my earlier self, my earlier work, but more than discouraged, I felt charged with the possibility and the freedom of cutting myself loose from my own and others expectations. I began with an exciting sense of dissatisfaction, and what emerged, as I began to find my voice, was a record full of storms. Some, like Feels Like Lightning or Friendamine, are physical storms. Others, like Dreams, are interior ones. Listening to these songs now, I hear uncertainty, mania, laughter and sadness, all vying for their place on the album. I was surprised by the new voice.

I have been writing records for almost twenty years now. Each one has been different from the last in subject and form, but with Gathering I feel I've found a new electric dissatisfaction, a new way to rejoice as the storm rolls in.

Dating from 1974, and following on from the re-release of Legend, this is
the second in our series of vinyl reissues of the original Virgin Albums.
Geoff Leigh had left the group and Lindsay Cooper joined on Bassoon,
Oboe, Flute, Soprano Sax. The mix was more 'live' than Legend, with the
drums much more up front. The first half is highly composed material, with
some of the Cow's best loved tunes, like Half Asleep Half Awake and
Bittern Storm Over Ulm. For the second half the material was all written in
the studio, using loops, vari-speed tapes and electronics, and
superimposing live improvisation and composed passages. 180 gram HQ
vinyl on a limited edition of 1000 copies

    Cabin By The Sea

Formed in 2003 out of Huntington Beach, CA, The Dirty Heads combine an intriguing mix of hip-hop, reggae and alternative rock with a sunny California swagger. The band released their debut album, Any Port In A Storm in 2008, which features the hit track Lay Me Down, a song that spent eleven weeks at #1 on the Billboard alternative chart, more than any single that year by any artist. The single was certified gold. In 2010, Rolling Stone touted The Dirty Heads as the year's 'Best New Bands.'

Cabin By The Sea maintains the diversity from their first album, roaming from sunny acoustic pop (Cabin By The Sea) to hip-hop with mariachi horns (Disguise) and feel-good reggae (Day By Day, Your Love). The album's defining trait? An insistence on positivity and good vibes, a philosophy summed up nicely by the single, Spread Too Thin. Features guest appearances by Kymani Marley, Rome and Matisyahu.

    Cryptocracy (Awaiting Repress)

From the metal-hewn flatlands of Finland comes a dark new force in electronic music. Forged in the electrical fire of industrial; nurtured through the apocalyptic feedback of art-rock, experimental and all things disruptive; and championed by the most influential names in EDM and beyond, Huoratron is deeper, stranger and harder-core than whatever came before it.

Huoratron came to life in 2003, the brainchild of DJ/producer/mad 8-bit scientist Aku Raski. His sinister vision has taken form in just a few releases: some material for Finnish label New Judas, including the proactively aggressive Prevenge EP, containing angry blip-fest $$ Troopers and Corporate Occult, a slice of electro-house gone horribly awry. A set of remixes that changed H.I.M.'s In Venere Veritas from a jangly bit of radio rock to a doomed ride aboard a haunted 747 and M.I.A.'s Internet Connection from her usual minimal-funky hoedown to a sizzling nuclear rain storm.

After resigning to Last Gang in 2010, Raski hit the studio, emerging a year later with Cryptocracy, his first full-length album. To be blatantly honest I do not personally feel a close resemblance to many, if any artist within my scene, Raski explains. This is mostly because I'm driven by my own vigorous motivation and do what I do despite associations made by others. I mean no disrespect by this. It is simply a fact that I, as an artist am in the center of the storm and feel content there.

Cryptocracy is a journey of destruction, driven by chip synths, distortion and gut-punching bass. Recognizable sounds peak their heads out occasionally: a house riff on Transcendence, a dubstep pass on Sea of Meat, stripped-down techno on A699F. But they're swallowed up by an apocalyptic wave; the noises, textures and sonic sneak attacks that are Huoratron's signature, born more from a feeling than a particular genre focus.

    Feel The Steel

Los Angeles' premiere heavy metal band, Steel Panther, are releasing their debut album, Feel The Steel, on Universal Republic Records. This mythical musical masterpiece has been 20 years in the making with the band retuning in 2009 to reclaim their rightful place among metal musics heavyweights. Powered by audacious frontman Michael Starr's fearless vocal charge, the group ignites audiences from every walk of life with their unbridled valentine that goes right for the jugular of the heavy metal repertoire. Joining the effervescent Starr are Steel Panthers Stix Zadinia on drums, Satchel on guitar, and bassist Lexxi Foxxx.

As word of Steel Panthers return began to spread around the music community, a whos who of musical artists stepped up to join the band in reclaiming metals place among the top of the music landscape. Allison Robertson of the Donnas and Justin Hawkins from the Darkness make an appearance on the Steel Panther mantra number, Party All Day while Avenged Sevenfolds M. Shadows lends his voice to Turn Out The Lights. Anthraxs Scott Ian shows up on the soon to be international hit, Asian Hooker alongside Slipknots Corey Taylor who also appears on the soon-to-be classics, Eyes Of A Panther and Death To All But Metal. The bands first single from Feel The Steel, Community Property, took the radio waves by storm being the #1 Most Added song at the Active Rock format.

    Lost In Alphaville

Lost In Alphaville is the long awaited and highly anticipated follow-up to The Rentals' landmark albums Return of the Rentals and
    Seven More Minutes.

When listening to Lost In Alphaville for the first time, one can't
help but be stoked by the perfect amalgamation of the sonic
components: the dense wall of Slegr's punishing guitars, the
primal smack of Carney's drums, Sharp's driving, distorted
bass and thick buzz of saturated Moog synthesizers -- all
tempered by Laessig's and Wolfe's beautifully lush voices and
Chipman's elegant string arrangements serving as an extremely
rich foundation for the layers and layers of Sharp's detached,
    voyeuristically breathy vocals.

Sharp created a wall of sound so dense and powerful with
arrangements that several songs on the album exceed 200
individually recorded tracks. During this process of arranging,
Sharp would slip into what he described as "euphoric, psychedelic
daydreams." Sharp says, "If you can't whip yourself up into a state
of full-blown rapture while you're creating, I don't really see the
    point of making music."

Lost In Alphaville is a true sonic achievement, The Rentals' best
album by a mile, a blissfully righteous storm of broken-up guitars,
buzz-saw synthesizers, brutally, barbaric rhythms which crumble
and crackle against a wash of strings, male and female voices-all
blending into 10 perfectly formed pop songs. Not only have The
Rentals completely surpassed their first two albums, but Sharp
just might be putting forward the best work of his entire career.
