Don't Smoke In BedMultiple Styles Displayed On Holly Cole's 1993 Sophomore Album
Mastered By Bernie Grundman From The Original Master Tapes
Plating And 200-Gram Vinyl Pressing By Quality Record Pressings!
Old-Style Gatefold Tip-On Jacket By Stoughton Printing
Holly Cole brings her own dimension to the tradition of cabaret, a strong voice that's still capable of nuance, an ear for quirky repertoire, and a light touch that keeps some of these performances floating just at the edge of irony.
On her second album, 1993's Don't Smoke in Bed, Cole explores varied musical styles, adding pop, blues, country and a French ballad to her standard, low-key jazz. It's a favorite of ours, which is why for this Analogue Productions reissue we've given it the reissue treatment it deserves. Bernie Grundman did the mastering, from the original analog tapes, at his Los Angeles studio, giving this release a spectacular foundation. Plating and pressing on 200-gram heavyweight vinyl was done by Gary Salstrom and crew at Quality Record Pressings, makers of the world's finest-sounding LPs. Lastly, we wrapped up the whole package in a premium gatefold tip-on jacket from Stoughton Printing. There's nothing but aces in this smokin' hot reissue and the quality shines through.
Holly's delivery of more traditional fare shines on Cole Porter's witty Get Out of Town and Kurt Weill's torchy Je Ne T'aime Pas, while she brings clarity, power, and anthemic passion to the surprising treatment of Johnny Nash's I Can See Clearly Now. She's generally well supported in this intimate set by pianist Aaron Davis and bassist David Piltch, while there's sparing and effective use of strings. There are fine guest spots by tenor saxophonist Joe Henderson, on Everyday Will Be Like a Holiday, and David Lindley, whose steel guitar contributes to the strange country music of Don't Let the Teardrops Rust Your Shining Heart.

Smoking KillsThe Disciplines are made up of three Norwegians, ex-members of Nordic pop success story Briskeby, and one American, Ken Stringfellow, whose extensive resume includes founding one of the '90s most critically acclaimed bands, the Posies. "Fierce youthful abandon mixed with the serenity of an old soul makes for some rockin' songs and smooth ballads." - CHICAGO SUN-TIMES
HOLY SMOKES is a rockin', groove-laden follow up to the rock opus PARDON ME, which put Tyler and his band The Northern Lights on the map when released in 2010. The new album reveals a more pensive and sophisticated Tyler who's learned his lessons while navigating the rollercoaster of life on the road, major festivals, major labels, drugs, booze, great love, great loss and the heartbreak of mistakes you can't change and time lost that you can't take back. A Walk in the DarkSo, enter the label's latest LP from Mind Fair's housier alias The Central Executives, whose project could've formed weeks ago, or perhaps be unearthed recordings from a loft party that went a few weeks longer than planned back in '87. But regardless of when it was actually recorded, there's a live-recorded exuberance that's part Arthur Russell, part ACT UP protest, part disco-punk ensemble ironing out the kinks in their act in some Queens basement with black mould spreading all around the ceiling.Golf Channel has called this record "the back street escapism these troubled times demand"- and maybe escapism is the word that encapsulates the timeless anonymity of my favourite Golf Channel offerings. In any case, A Walk in the Dark is an absolute burner of an LP - there's not a single moment on it that doesn't reveal something new with every listen, and for all its retro influences, it's still packed with surprises. It's the gruff bodega owner who starts smiling at you after figuring out that you're queer, but only when no one else is around. It's smoking inside, it's someone's radio blaring out the window, it's Broadway before Disney bought out all the bars - it's New York.1. High Roads

Lady In Gold (Bone Vinyl)Limited Edition Of 500 Copies Pressed On Bone Colored Vinyl
Very few modern bands are lucky enough to have such a unique, individual and inimitable style as well as blessed with such an incredible voice at the forefront, so it's very rare that a group representing traditional blues-rock can come along with all these characteristics and whip up such excitement in 2016.
BLUES PILLS contain all these elements to create extraordinary music that sounds original and new but respects those long-held rules of blues and rock and roll tradition. Although, it's the individual characteristics of the band that makes this music electrifying; the steady bass of Zack Anderson, thumping rhythm of AndrÉ Kvarnström, technical and yet improvisational guitar of Dorian Sorriaux and the sensational soaring vocals of frontwoman Elin Larsson that set this band apart.
The psychedelic sounds of the band may hail back to the prosperity of the 1960's and 1970's and it's true their distinctive sound may include a few ingredients of the past; a pinch of late 60's Americana, a sprinkling of blues, a heavy serving of rock 'n' roll, a big squeeze of soul but it's all shaken up into a brand-new cocktail of sound, and served into this heavenly new blend we call BLUES PILLS.
That's why it seems to be a sign of destiny that the stars aligned for this exceptional group to be born in 2011, only one year later the striking, soulful and organic sound of first single 'Black Smoke' was fascinating countless listeners - followed up by the EP "Bliss". When in 2014 the self-titled album was released, the whole genre was turned upside down and BLUES PILLS were charting across Europe and continually selling out larger venues. Now the fans are calling on BLUES PILLS to present their second album "Lady In Gold".
"'Lady Gold' is a character symbolizing death", explains singer Elin Larsson of the intriguing album title. "We wanted to get away from the typical stereotype of the Grim Reaper."
The mystical and dark references of the album title are echoed throughout a lot of the album - there's the ode to the female "Keeper Of The Soul" on spiritual sounding title track 'Lady In Gold' and talks of failed salvation from a deceitful messiah in the soul anthem 'Little Boy Preacher'. There's emotive blues ballads in 'I've Felt A Change' and 'Burned Out' and empowering post-heartbreak tales in 'Won't Go Back' and 'Rejection'.
Similarly to the self-titled debut "Lady In Gold" was produced in Sweden by producer Don Alsterberg and it captures everything that's made them one of the most talked about rock bands of the past few years.1. Lady In Gold

Ghosts (Awaiting Repress)Female London-based duo Smoke Fairies are releasing Ghosts, a vinyl album compiling their first two singles and an EP, being issued by 453 Music.
Their unique interweaving of ethereal vocal harmonizing and swampland guitars draws inspiration from sources as seemingly contradictory as the rolling hills of the pair's native Sussex and the foothills of the Appalachian mountains; the smoky jazz cafes of New Orleans to the sunny meadows of the English countryside... try to pigeonhole the Smoke Fairies? You might as well try to capture a storm in a whisky bottle.
This music wells up from deep in their souls, sometimes dark, sometimes delicate and unmistakably shaped by a distinctly British sensibilities and filled with a delicious tension -- at once warm and haunting; soothing and unsettling. Following in the footsteps of artists like the Velvet Underground, Led Zeppelin (on their respective third albums), and Jefferson Airplane they've overhauled their musical roots and brought something new to the world. ''Frozen Heart,'' for instance, is a paean to love whose influences span five decades and all manner of traditional genres, putting all those the pieces together in a strikingly fresh and original way.
Now with four very collectible singles under their belts, (including a one-off on Jack White's label Third Man Records) they are established in the UK, and are selling out their own shows in the capital. In 2010, the North America beckons again as they release Ghosts and plan on extensive touring. They recently played at SXSW 2010 in Austin, TX in March and will begin touring North America May of this year, supporting Laura Marlin.Side A:

FiddleReissue of Smoke Dawson's 1971 private press LP, 'Fiddle,' out on Tompkins Square.
George Smoke Dawson played banjo in MacGrundy's Old-Timey Wool Thumpers with Peter Stampfel (later of Holy Modal Rounders) in 1960, lived for
years at Caffe Lena in Saratoga Springs, NY, and roamed around the US as an itinerant bagpipe and fiddle player for decades. His life is laced with small
triumphs, and lots of tragedy. But he's still with us. Tompkins Square reissues his only album, a remarkable 1971 private press LP.
Excerpted notes by reissue producer / Tompkins Square label owner Josh Rosenthal :
I was doing some research for a box set of music recorded at Caffe Lena, the hallowed folk music venue located in Saratoga Springs, NY, when I came
upon a photograph of a musician I didn't recognize. He looked like a sixth member of The Band - a handsome fiddler with wax moustache, goatee, black
Western hat. There was a traditional air to him, a seriousness, but there was also something wild there. I needed to know who he was, and everything
about him. The producers told me his name was Smoke Dawson, and they had tape on him. We listened, and his live version of Devil's Dream made it
onto the box set. Then I started digging. I found a 1996 blog post from someone named Oliver Seeler, who claimed to have recorded a solo album by
Dawson in 1971. I called the number on the site, not expecting much from an 18 year old blog post. But he picked up. He gave me background on the
record. And, he gave me Smoke Dawson's phone number . . .1. John Brown's Dream

Live At St. Pancras Old ChurchIn October 2013 Melora Creager and Daniel from Rasputina arrived in London to join us and multi-instrumentalist, Neil Walsh, on a small tour of English churches and halls. With only a day to practice we were all a little apprehensive as we unpacked our instruments and set up some amps in our kitchen but after a few moments as the strings, voices and guitars filled the room we knew the shows ahead were going to turn out just fine.
Melora's and Daniel's cellos and Neil's viola provided new textures and direction to our old songs and it was a tour that left us very grateful for the opportunity to play with such talented friends, to attentive audiences in some spectacular, historical places.
The last night of the tour was recorded in St Pancras Old Church, London and we will be releasing it as a limited edition LP album. The sleeve is hand-drawn and the record will be pressed on heavyweight vinyl.
In the six years since Smoke Fairies first entered a recording studio, they have made three critically acclaimed albums, supported the likes of Bryan Ferry, Laura Marling, Seasick Steve and Richard Hawley, and were the first UK act to be flown to the states to record a single with Jack White for his Third Man Records label.
Jessica Davies and Katherine Blamire met at school in Chichester, West Sussex and have been inseperable ever since, travelling to tour their music across the world.

The White Birch (Awaiting Repress)Seminal Slowcore Progenitor's Sub Pop Albums Reissued Individually as Deluxe 2LP + CD Editions!
Restored from the Original Masters Complete w/ Additional Singles, Demos, Live Recordings and Peel Sessions!
From 1990-1994, New York City's Codeine were making somnambulant waves on a musical landscape reeling from Sub Pop's better known exports. 1991's Frigid Stars, 1992's Barely Real, and 1994's The White Birch received much critical praise upon release, but Codeine dissolved before any of that hype would carry Low, Bedhead, and the Red House Painters to international acclaim.
All three albums will be subjected to Numero's notoriously elaborate packaging and detailed liner notes, including essays by Sub Pop's Jonathan Poneman, Love Child's Alan Licht, and the Flaming Lips' Wayne Coyne and Steven Drozd. The albums have been faithfully restored from the original masters, and are accompanied by a plethora of singles, demos, live recordings, and Peel sessions. Each album will be packaged as a double album with a CD of the same material.
Codeine's third overall release and second full-length, The White Birch, was originally issued in 1994 and would be the band's final offering. Regarded as their best album, the 9-song set is bookended by the murky opener Sea and the contemplative closer Smoking Room with highlights Vacancy and Washed Up in between. 2LP + CD edition features 8 bonus tracks including demos, live takes and Peel sessions.
In support of this great undertaking, Codeine's original line-up of Stephen Immerwahr, John Engle, and Chris Brokaw will be reuniting for a handful of dates in the US and Europe, including All Tomorrow's Parties in both London and Japan, and Primavera in Spain.LP1

Remastered For Vinyl By Kevin Gray At Cohearent Audio
Half Hour of Power is an EP by Canadian rock band Sum 41. It was originally released on June 27, 2000 on Big Rig Records, a subsidiary of Island Records (United States), and Aquarius Records (Canada). Some consider the album to be the band's first studio album. However the band claims that their next release, All Killer No Filler, is their first debut album.
The first track, Grab the Devil by the Horns and Fuck Him up the Ass, is a time warp. For a minute and a half the group relives the new wave of British metal and cranks out an Iron Maiden style tune. After a brief trip down memory lane the album quickly morphs into pop punk. The songs are well crafted and the hooks are catchy on Make No Difference and Summer. But in some respects that is problematic, there was a time in the pre-Green Day/Blink 182 years where punk defined itself by not being radio friendly. A good album, but essentially proof that turn of the millennium punk is just as much a corporate rock entity as adult contemporary. - Curtis Zimmermann, All Music1. Lesser UnknownBaltimore and Wham City resident Adventure's 2008 self-titled debut was an energetic journey through the outer expanses of an SID chip, an experience that took listeners whizzing over pixelated mountains and explored the darker corners of the most modernized urban setting.
This limited tonal range and lack of human vocals (save for a few dialogue samples from Bladerunner) may have made the music of Adventure seem a bit cold or impersonal, but on his newest release, Lesser Known, Benny Boeldt has brightened up his sound, adding soaring synth blasts and maximalist flourishes a la M83.
The airy snare and pulsing bass that open the album act as fanfare, like Boeldt welcoming the listener into the spacious new environment of Lesser Known. His aesthetic remains grounded in the 1980s, but the songs sound more like retro-futuristic radio hits than the arcade conjuring modulations of his first release. On tracks like Fool's Paradise and Smoke and Mirrors, Boeldt splits the difference between New Order and Nu Shooz, creating a sound that could please even the most cynical bedroom moper while gratifying any party-goer who's simply looking to dance.
Those fearing a record of wistful '80s pop facsimiles will be pleased to hear tunes like Relax the Mind and Lights Out connecting the dots that link Giorgio Moroder and his modern hit-making scion Dr. Luke. Dance beats permeate the bulk of Lesser Known, but the two closing songs introduce pensive atmospheres, perhaps laying the framework for Boeldt's future musical ventures.1. Open Door

MaraqopaDamien Jurados newest collaboration with producer Richard Swift drops us into a brutal and benevolent landscape. The bold strokes and new turns the pair made with 2010s Saint Bartlett are taken even further. He throws open the gate on his oft insular dirges and allows them to do some real wilding out in the canyon. In Maraqopa, the vistas are miles-wide; the action is more dynamic; the close-ups sweaty and snarling.
The strummed desert blues that begins Nothing is the News quickly bursts open into an Eddie Hazel-worthy supernova shred session, all of it swirling in tinny-psych and Echoplexd howls. Weve never heard anything like this from Jurado. Fifteen years into his remarkable career, and he continues to blossom. Jurado and Swift establish themselves not only as inventive, trusting collaborators, but as one anothers spirit animals in American outsider songcraft, lone wolves in black sheeps clothing. Swift is the Ennio Morricone to Jurados Sergio Leone.
At Swifts National Freedom studios, the live-to-tape ethos allowed these songs to expand and retract like a great beasts breath. Every in-the-moment bell and whistle here is hung with a natural, casual care. And from this, each song offers up its own unique gift: the enchanting childrens choir that echoes each line of Jurados lament for innocence lost on Life Away from the Garden; the breezy bossa nova that begins This Time Next Year and rises as effortless as a smoke cloud into high-noon showdown pop; Reel to Reel's wobbly, Spector-symphony and its meta themes; and the wonderful falsetto vocal work Jurado pulls from himself on Museum of Flight.1. ...And Justice For Y'all (Awaiting Repress)The South will smoke again. The Bible Belt state of North Carolina, USA seems a fertile ground for hemp and stoner rock. When cult sludge act BUZZOV•EN called it a day, bass player Dave Dixie Collins teamed up with guitarist Dave Shep Shepherd and founded WEEDEATER in the harbor town of Wilmington about the year 1998. Their crushing and massive first full-length and Justice for Y'all created an immediate buzz, while critics were struggling to put a tag on their sound. Nearly everybody agreed that stoner rock, doom, sludge and some crusty elements were part of the mix, which the band simply calls weed metal. The debut was produced by renowned engineer Billy Anderson (EYEHATEGOD, NEUROSIS) as well as sophomore album Sixteen Tons (2002). WEEDEATER went out to perform live with CORROSION OF CONFORMITY and ALABAMA THUNDERPUSSY among others. After some detours of Dixie Dave, who played shortly with BONGZILLA and SOURVEIN, the third album God Luck and Good Speed hit the world in 2007 and shifted the band's focus slightly towards the stoner side. The latest full-length Jason the Dragon got delayed when guitarist Shep lost a toe due to an incident with his favourite shotgun. When the sludge driven album finally came out in 2011 shows in the US and Europe cemented the band's reputation as a fierce live entity. For the next release WEEDEATER have signed up with Season of Mist, which will reissue the complete back catalogue. Hell Hath No Fury (Awaiting Repress)White Colored Vinyl
In the 4 years after The Clipse dropped their sophomore classic Lord Willin' the duo was able to build a legacy that had fans hungry for new material. After the smoke cleared and they
hit the studio the Virginia brothers recorded the confidently mature sophomore effort, Hell Hath No Fury. Best known for their unconventional radio smash "Grindin'," Clipse are no
strangers to taking risks with the boundary-pushing Neptunes, who return as trusted co-pilots for Hell Hath No Fury. As always the duo is right at home over The Neptunes crafted
beats which perfectly embrace Pusha's inventive drug-game metaphors and Malice's soul-baring confessionals. From the bouncy lead single "Mr. Me Too" and the Slim Thug
assisted "Wamp Wamp" to the oddly haunting Keys Open Doors to Momma I'm Sorry, Hell Hath No Fury represents some of the duo's best work. On the hypnotic "Keys Open
Doors," over the eerie mix of screwed-up angelic voices, chimes and congas, the brothers run circles around the competition, while the spine-tingling boom-bap of "Ride Around Shining" sets the stage for Pusha's hilarious boasts. Whether rhyming over distorted, lo-fi guitar plucks ("Dirty Money") or overblown 808s ("Trill"), the brothers come with colorful references and inventive word play that easily places them in a lyrical class of their own. Kills vocalist Alison Mosshart, the analog champion¹s latest quartet plays
psychedelic blues and stark rock that¹s moody, atmospheric, and hypnotic. Tinged with swampy vibes and ominous emotions, this is a supergroup that lives up to the names and pedigrees of its impressive roster of members.
In addition to White and Mosshart, The Dead Weather brings together Queens Of The Stone Age guitarist Dean Fertita and Raconteurs bassist Jack Lawrence. A veritable jack of all trades, White has turned his attention to the drums, leaving the guitar fireworks to Fertita. Most importantly, the quartet's iniitial batch of songs leaves nothing to be desired.
Steeped in mythology, dripping with trashy promise, and soaked in an aptly humid atmospherics, Horehound is a modern marvel--a full-band effort that pools the best of White's other bands into an utterly distinctive whole. The push-pull interplay between White and Mosshart is alone worth exploring; such tension, drive, and edginess inform the proceedings, which span funk, sleazy blues, greasy boogies, and fuzz-drenched rock. Call it an update on not only blues' traditions but those of film noir, where White is ensared by Mosshart's femme-fatale allure and the band plays the soundtrack while the devil marches in and takes control.
Recorded in just three weeks at White's newly constructed Nashville studio, Horehound has the sonics to match the excellent tunesmithship. Quickly becoming renown as one of the most analog-minded producers around, White worked to capture every nuance, texture, and note on this richly detailed album, which like the White Stripes' work, was intended to be heard on vinyl. Fertita's organ work and Lawrence's melodically distorted bass lines are not only heard but felt as they contribute to an ambience that's at once haunted and mesmerizing. You will not be disappointed at the results.
Maybe the guy keeps such an insane work schedule because he's afraid idle hands are the devil's workshop. So while Meg White prepares to become Patti Smith's daughter-in-law, Jack keeps busy with this brilliant new band, tangling with Alison Mosshart of the Kills for an excellent album of sex sweat, bourbon breath, gun smoke and guitar sleaze. At a time when most of what passes for alternative rock sounds desiccated,
Amphetamine Ballads feels raw and potent and alive."
- The Guardian
"The Amazing Snakeheads' debut album Amphetamine Ballads is not for prissy pants, it
growls and grimaces across filthy blues like a pub fight in Nashville."
"Amphetamine Ballads showcases a group with good taste, and the ability to cook up
an adrenalised racket or a melancholy fog. [ ] As long as boring bands exist, this kind of
piss and vinegar will always be welcome."
Domino Records is proud to present Amphetamine Ballads, the debut album from
Glasgow's The Amazing Snakeheads. A monument to
the redemptive powers of rock 'n' roll - full of rage, romance and dark humor -
Amphetamine Ballads is an uncompromising, astonishingly visceral debut album. On
the strength of early singles and their live shows, The Amazing Snakeheads have
established themselves as a force of nature not to be reckoned with and one of the most
promising rock 'n' roll bands to come out of the UK in ages.
Hailing from Glasgow, Scotland the Amazing Snakeheads - Dale Barclay, William
Coombe & Jordan Hutchison - look like they sound: all pomade, shades, denim,
leather and signet rings. Amphetamine Ballads is the soundtrack to the dark corners
of nightclubs and those dimly lit alleyways off the main drag. The smell of smoke
and liquor pervades everything. Recorded at night time at The Green Door Studio in
Glasgow, this is a subterranean record - an album that can show you round the parts of
a city that come alive after dark.
The Amazing Snakeheads never really formed as such - their conception seemingly
more preordained than planned. Dale and William had been friends since childhood;
Jordan was Dale's neighbor who became a close friend. While they each played music,
they never really harboured ambitions to play in bands - the prospect of aiming high
and missing was almost enough to put the trio off even trying. When the band finally
got together and started playing shows, their shows quickly gained an infamous
reputation. On stage, Dale appears possessed by music, rock'n'roll channeled through
every sinew in his body. Announcing themselves in the summer of 2013 with a one-off
7", a ferocious 84-second long strut called "Testifying Time," the band's reputation was
quickly solidified. And now with Amphetamine Ballads set for release this summer, The
Amazing Snakeheads will deliver on the promise on those live shows and early singles!1. I'm A Vampire

Tom Waits and Crystal Gale Create Magic Together on Waits' Most Accessible Outing
Small Combo Band Provides Jazzy and Bluesy Support
Stupendous Sonics: Music Largely Recorded Live on Studio Floor
One From the Heart ranks among the best soundtracks in history. Essential for any Tom Waits or Crystal Gayle devotee, it sets an example of what's not only possible, but should be expected and demanded, when two likeminded artists collaborate. Heartstrings are tugged, passions kindled and lost, sentiments exchanged, skeletons dragged out of closets, seasons changed, romantic truisms cited. And its wide-open sound is supreme, the result of most tracks being recorded live in the studio, free of after-effects and interference.
Mastered from the original master tapes and pressed at RTI, Mobile Fidelity's 180g LP presents the Academy Award-nominated One From the Heart in stunning sonic relief. You'll be able to gauge the signature tones of the guitars and hear inside the cavity of Waits' piano. Perhaps most importantly, Gayle and Waits' voices now sound just feet away, with your room converted into the world's coolest late-night lounge. Spatial cues, background accents, and studio dimensions emerge with striking realism.
Inspired by a track Waits cut with Bette Midler on his Foreign Affairs effort, One From the Heart overflows with simpatico chemistry, poignant contrast, elegant atmospherics, and awestruck intimacy. On their four vocal duets, Gayle and Waits inhabit the personas of a man and woman breaking apart yet sharing common bonds. Their singing plumbs emotional depths that traverse melancholy, sensuality, and understanding. Made before Waits' baritone turned into a deep, gravel-laden instrument, the songs are more smoke than whiskey, more piano-man empathy than hipster growler.
Written by Waits, the music occupies a common ground between laidback small-combo jazz, lounge pop, and downbeat blues. Classy string orchestrations abet a crack ensemble comprised of saxophonist Terry Edwards, drummer Shelly Manne, pianist Pete Jolly, bassist Greg Cohen, and others. The arrangements seamlessly melt into both vocalists' leads, allowing every note-every piano clink, acoustic bass ripple, brushed snare drum-to register with utmost magnitude.
Experienced on stunning soliloquy pieces such as Gayle's mournful ballad "Is There Any Way Out of This Dream?" and back-and-forth collaborative efforts like the breakup take "Picking Up After You," beautiful instrumentation, spacious production, and flawless vocal phrasing take hold. You can picture the broken dreams exiting out the side doors of the dim bars and abandoned houses that pepper the narratives. Renowned for his sad songs, Waits has never been in better form, the goodbye fare clicking with unflinching honesty and personality.

The Second AlbumBack in 1995, Bay Area rap was at the big-ballin' peak of the mobb music craze, LA was chronically gripped in a G-funk indo smoke haze, Atlanta was
enjoying its Southernplayalistic days, and NYC was entering a shiny-suit phase. There was no frame of reference for two lyrical emcees experimenting
with the tonality and resonance of rhyme patterns. This was uncharted territory. The pairing of Lyrics Born and Lateef the Truthspeaker into Latyrx was an accident, LB recalls. Both emcees were solo artists, but when LB heard the pre-Endtroducing DJ Shadow beat which would become Latyrx' eponymous debut single, his reaction was, Oh my God, I gotta get on this.
Latyrx was a syllabic tour de force which began with two dissonant voices -- one gruff and bassy, the other higher-pitched and trebly, both hella fluid -- it
transmogrified into a harmonic convergence of doubled verses simultaneously assaulting eardrums. Undeniably, it was great... but weird. It was ill,
Lateef recalls. We really felt like we had something unlike anyone else had done, he adds. Latyrx' first and thusfar, only, full-length, 1997's Latyrx: the Album, set the tone for what Solesides and Quannum would do, LB recalls, while 1998's Muzappers Re-Mixes EP spawned one of the only feminist-affirming club bangers in hip-hop history, Lady Don't Tek No.
Though Latyrx never officially broke up, after Muzappers, both members followed their chosen paths to considerable solo success. Yet no matter how
much acclaim each attained individually, the notion of someday making another Latyrx record was always present. It's probably the number one thing I
got asked about in my career, LB says. 16 years (!) after the release of Latyrx: the Album, LB and Lateef have finally answered the prayers of long-starved fans who have begged, pleaded and, by now, tweeted about the possibilities of a reunion. An impromptu Latyrx set at a 2010 Jazz Mafia concert at San Francisco's Mezzanine led to an
appearance at 2011's Outside Lands festival, Google's Summer Concert Series (they were the first ever hip-hop act to perform) and a last minute
appearance as part of HITRECORD At The Movies -- a unique film and music traveling showcase curated and hosted by actor and artist Joseph Gordon-
Most recently the duo have performed at the Wintersalt Festival in San Francisco last December and toured the United States with super funk group,
Galactic. Having just released a brand new EP titled 'DISCONNECTION' late last year, LB & Lateef are hard at work on the proper follow up to their debut album, a
new record aptly titled, 'THE SECOND ALBUM'.
Featuring a long list of producers and special guests, the album credits read like a music festival with artists from Tune Yards and Forrest Day to
Blackalicious and The Decemberists stepping in to help create one of the most highly anticipated records of all time. What Latyrx brings to the table is a technical difficulty level rare these days in hip-hop and matched only by a few groups in the genre's entire history: Run -DMC, Jurassic 5, Blackstar, Freestyle Fellowship. Their challenging, intricate back-and forth arrangements evoke a lyrical version of bebop, with layer
upon layer of rhythmic syncopation and vocal patterning constantly pushing the envelope.
We have a good chemistry and it's kind of unique, Lateef says. We step up each others' game content, and both of us push each other in the originality
department. What we've talked about is very simply, picking up where we left off, LB explains. The return of Latyrx stands as Very Good News for true hip-hop fans,
lyrical aficionados, boom-bap beatniks, urban bohemians, wee tots in Reeboks, and Muzappers of all shapes, sizes, colors, and ages.1. Arrival [prod. by Jel of Anticon]
