    Contra

2008 was quite a year for Vampire Weekend. After the release of their eponymous debut album in January, the New York quartet graced the cover of Spin Magazine, played on almost every television program from Saturday Night Live to David Letterman, and toured the world several times over including stops at the Coachella and Bonnaroo festivals. They regrouped in early 2009 to begin the recording of their sophomore album, Contra. Like their first, Contra was produced by keyboardist Rostam Batmanglij and is the realization of a whole and unique musical vision that sees the band stretching out and adding new textures, instrumentation, and rhythms into their sound. Primarily recorded in New York with a springtime sojourn to Mexico, Contra feels altogether fresh, joyous, and like nothing else, but is immediately recognizable as the sound of Vampire Weekend.

This NY four-piece draw on their diverse backgrounds and interests, experimenting with African guitar music, the Western classical canon, hazy memories of Cape Cod summers, winters in upper Manhattan, and reggaeton. Equal parts shruggy New York indie strumming and groovy Afro-pop, Vampire Weekend's organ-and-drum runs highlight narratives about relationships, punctuation, and sometimes both - Spin. Modern Vampires Of The City

Modern Vampires of the City is Vampire Weekend's third album, and it will be released on May 7th, 2013. The album is a bustling world of voices and visions - from the death of Henry Hudson to the Orthodox girl falling in love at an uptown falafel shop, from Hannah Hunt tearing up the New York
Times on a distant beach to the lethal chandelier of "Everlasting Arms", from the ardent yearning of "Don't Lie" to the harmonized voice of hope in "Young Lion".

For this album, Rostam Batmanglij and Ezra Koenig traveled to LA to collaborate with Rostam's longtime friend, and fellow producer, Ariel Rechtshaid. They brought with them writing and recording sessions from New York and Martha's Vineyard and began to stride towards realizing the finished album and were later joined by drummer Chris Tomson and bassist Chris Baio. Drums and bass were recorded to analog tape at Vox Studios. Built in the 1930's, it's one
of the oldest privately owned studios in Los Angeles. Those parts were then reintegrated with the sessions and further manipulated to create a synthesis of sound and tone, both old and new. Modern Vampires of the City has a grandeur and romanticism evocative of the city where it was conceived.

    Black Hours

Hamilton Leithauser announces his debut solo album Black Hours via Ribbon Music -
inaugurating a new chapter in an already remarkable career from The Walkmen front man. The album
brings Leithauser full circle and then some, from lonely midwinter piano-and-vocals sessions, to a
loud, live Rock n Roll group and back again. Featuring Leithauser with a slew of talented collaborators
including Rostam Batmanglij (Vampire Weekend), Paul Maroon (The Walkmen), Morgan Henderson
(Fleet Foxes) and Richard Swift (The Shins/solo), the album showcases Leithauser at his most
    passionate, personal and free.

The video for the first single "Alexandra," which was directed by SXSW Film Festival Grand Jury award
winning director Tristan Patterson. The track was co-written by Hamilton Leithauser and Rostam
Batmanglij, the latter producing and mixing the track.

In its orchestrated rhythms, dynamic vocals, and generous production, Black Hours speaks from one
booming voice. The instrumentation provides muscle and texture: Maroon covering a wide range of
acoustic and electric guitars as well as grand piano; Batmanglij switching between guitar, harpsichord,
piano, bass and harmonica; Morgan Henderson from Fleet Foxes takes the marimba and upright bass,
and Richard Swift lays down impressive drums on seven tracks (Henderson & Swift will be accompanying
Leithauser on a full U.S. tour). Amber Coffman from the Dirty Projectors provides backing vocals on
several numbers and even Hugh McIntosh of Leithauser's first band, the Recoys, returns to the drum
stool for a pair of songs.

Principal recording was done in August 2013 at Vox Studios in Los Angeles, "the oldest private studio in
the world", where Nat King Cole, Bing Crosby, Johnny Mercer, and countless others cut demos before
appearing on air at NBC studios, just across Melrose Ave.

"The Scottish indie-pop group has managed to
build a fan base the old-fashioned way: by writing
old-fashioned songs, the kind that brim with
    melody, sensitivity, cleverness, sophistication, and
sheer beauty. It's hard to imagine groups like The
Shins, Arcade Fire, or Vampire Weekend sounding
like they do without its influence"
    - Entertainment Weekly

Girls In Peacetime Want To Dance is the longawaited
follow-up to 2010's Write About Love.
Produced and mixed at Maze Studios in Atlanta
by Ben H. Allen III, best known for his work with
Gnarls Barkley, Animal Collective, and Raury,
among others, the band - who have been
listening to things like vintage Detroit techno
and Giorgio Moroder - have brought a danceparty
element into their gorgeous tales of
sensitive souls navigating a world gone awry. It
is perhaps the most inspired and wide-reaching
album Belle and Sebastian have ever made.

Given that band leader Stuart Murdoch has
    openly declared himself pro-bubblegum before,
it shouldn't come as a surprise that 'Enter Sylvia
Plath', 'The Book Of You' and 'Play For Today' have
keyboard hooks that recall Scandinavian pop
machines past and present. The filmic loves,
kitchen sink imagery and baroque touches are
still there, too, don't worry. It's all about trusting
in the restorative power of pop music. If you'd
trust anyone to write a great Europop song
about Sylvia Plath, you'd trust Belle & Sebastian.

    Youngish American

Dams of the West - the new solo project from Vampire Weekend drummer Chris Tomson - have shared details on their debut LP, entitled 'Youngish American.'

Produced by Patrick Carney of the Black Keys alongside Roger Moutenot and Tomson himself, 'Youngish American' was born after a long run of Vampire Weekend dates, when Tomson found himself at home with an empty calendar for the first time in years. After a few months spent grappling with existential insecurity and writer's block, the new music began to take form. Recorded in Nashville with Carney at the helm, Tomson wrote every song and plays virtually all instruments on the album.

The 10-song collection offers casually cutting takes on early-30's ennui and domesticity, exploring the tension between wanting to settle down and the simultaneous hesitancy to leave behind younger roles. The project's name serves as a nod to this psychological limbo, an ode to the once-useful dams of the west - totemic pieces of infrastructure that threaten to become obsolete as time moves on.

    The Names

Vampire Weekend's Chris Baio makes dance music under the name Baio. Back in April, he announced that a debut album would be coming soon via Glassnote, and that it would contain Bowie and Ferry-influenced pop songs and dumbsmart arena techno. Now, he's detailed The Names.

The album takes its title from Don DeLillo's 1982 novel. The Names is a record that has reverberated through my mind for much of the last five years, Baio said in a press release. Its themes began to take shape when I moved from New York to London in 2013. Today I'm delighted to share the first track of a record that I think is pretty tight!

I don't make music for myself, says Santigold, matter-of-factly. I pay a lot of attention to that -- making music that's liked by more people than just myself. In a scene driven by bravado, few musicians would ruminate on the Zen-like balance behind creating truly gratifying art. But exploring that intersection between integrity and intrigue has always been central to this idiosyncratic musician's appeal. That, in turn, has culminated in her latest release, '99¢', an often-playful satire on the singer's brand.

The '99¢' album cover features me shrink-wrapped among a cluttered mess of things -- my life in a bag, she explains. It is about how everything is a packaged product for sale: how we package ourselves, our lives, our relationships.

It took roughly eight months to manifest her new vision, with assists from a mix of collaborators with poppier visions such as producers Patrick Berger (Robyn, Icona Pop) and John Hill (Florence and the Machine, Charli XCX), alongside eclectic talents known more for globe-trotting sounds such as Vampire Weekend's Rostam Batmanglij and TV on the Radio's Dave Sitek. She went into the studio with them intending to make a fun record. My last record had a seriousness to it, she says. This time around, it's more playful -- but still a commentary.

Today, any of her dissents veer toward the contemplative. I wanted to write some songs that felt very personal, she says. Before Santigold, in my other band, I used to write songs like journal entries. And I tried to write a couple of songs on this record where it was really about me and my experience. Though, in true Santigold form, she balances the introspective moments with humorous ones in songs like Who Be Loving Me, a lighthearted boast about fan adoration, produced by Zeds Dead and featuring ILoveMakonnen.

You could go around being annoyed all the time, or you can go, 'This is crazy and actually funny.' Then you can play around with it, and make great art, she says. This album has required me to be more open, less of a perfectionist. Ironically, that's made the prismatic '99¢' her most ambitious album to date. I realize that my work is a collage, she says. And I can pretty much take that anywhere.

    LP

Discovery is the recording project of Rostam Batmanglij and Wes Miles, friends who began recording together in the summer of 2005. One year later they had committed themselves to their respective bands, Vampire Weekend and Ra Ra Riot, but nonetheless continued to record together when they both found themselves in the same city. The project is many things: it's partly an attempt to realize Wes' concept of a band where everyone plays synthesizers, and of Rostam's concept for an album where handclaps keep the backbeat instead of snares drums. It's an embrace and also a commentary on the pop music of the past decade, of booming 808 bass and jittery sixteenth note high-hats. Elements of European electronic dance music skittering in double-time over steady R&B. If soul music is secularized, sexualized gospel, Discovery is an attempt to see if soul music can survive being plasticized, roboticized, quantized, chopped, and finally, screwed. The album features Rostam and Wes each singing half the songs and guest vocals from Ezra Koenig (Vampire Weekend) and Angel Deradoorian (Dirty Projecters).

Milky Chance will release their sophomore album Blossom on Republic Records. The first single Cocoon, inspired by trying to find a period of reflection on the runaway success of their first album, has already reached Top 25 at Alternative Radio. Time describes the song as Somewhere between the folksy rock of Vampire Weekend and the haunting electropop of Beach House, adding that it's, low-key alt-rock that appeals to indie listeners and mainstream pop fans. Indie Shuffle writes, They have wonderfully upbeat songs and can also put on a pretty solid live performance, and Indie Obsessive claims, The band's sound combines deep, organic warmth instrumental arrangements and it also brings forth a palpable sense of returning to a place of serenity.

Awake represented a high-water mark for Scott Hansen, the San Francisco musician better known as Tycho. Described by Hansen as, in many ways, the first True Tycho record, Awake announced the arrival of Tycho as a full band, and it found Hansen streamlining the group's sound, focusing on the drums and aiming to capture the energy and power of the group's live set. The story of Awake arrives at its natural conclusion with this 12 of remixes, on which Hansen's songs are re-interpreted by producers (including Ghostly artists Com Truise, Beacon, & Christopher Willits, as well as Baio from Vampire Weekend, Nitemoves, and more) who make the songs their own while retaining all of their core elements.

    Hospitality

The angular, intricate, and intelligent compositions of Hospitality signal a sophisticated new pop voice. Singer Amber Papinis idiosyncratic songwriting coupled with the bands rich arrangements on their self-titled debut explore youth, New York, and the bittersweet commingling of past and present in a way that feels just right, right now.

Papinis singing has a wisp of an English accent via Kansas City (she learned to sing by imitating Richard Butler on The Psychedelic Furs Talk Talk Talk) and her lyrics create a moonstruck, even cinematic vision of New York City, where the band formed in 2007.

The production by Shane Stoneback (Vampire Weekend, Sleigh Bells) and band member Nathan Michel (guitar, drums, keyboards), who released his share of experimental bedroom pop, culminating in 2005s The Beast (Skipp/Sonig), imbues the entire record with an intimate yet prodigious sound, layering period keyboards with horns, synthesizers, and treated guitars. Limited to only 1000 vinyl copies!

Girls In Peacetime Want To Dance

"The Scottish indie-pop group has managed to
build a fan base the old-fashioned way: by writing
old-fashioned songs, the kind that brim with
    melody, sensitivity, cleverness, sophistication, and
sheer beauty. It's hard to imagine groups like The
Shins, Arcade Fire, or Vampire Weekend sounding
like they do without its influence"
    - Entertainment Weekly

Girls In Peacetime Want To Dance is the longawaited
follow-up to 2010's Write About Love.
Produced and mixed at Maze Studios in Atlanta
by Ben H. Allen III, best known for his work with
Gnarls Barkley, Animal Collective, and Raury,
among others, the band - who have been
listening to things like vintage Detroit techno
and Giorgio Moroder - have brought a danceparty
element into their gorgeous tales of
sensitive souls navigating a world gone awry. It
is perhaps the most inspired and wide-reaching
album Belle and Sebastian have ever made.

Given that band leader Stuart Murdoch has
    openly declared himself pro-bubblegum before,
it shouldn't come as a surprise that 'Enter Sylvia
Plath', 'The Book Of You' and 'Play For Today' have
keyboard hooks that recall Scandinavian pop
machines past and present. The filmic loves,
kitchen sink imagery and baroque touches are
still there, too, don't worry. It's all about trusting
in the restorative power of pop music. If you'd
trust anyone to write a great Europop song
about Sylvia Plath, you'd trust Belle & Sebastian.

    Wonder Where We Land

Since the release of his debut album in 2011, SBTRKT has cemented his
role as one of the most acclaimed electronic artists and performers around.
What began as praise in his hometown of London has now reached to
    every corner of the globe.

Wonder Where We Land follows his now critically acclaimed eponymous
debut album and a recent series of six instrumentals called Transitions -
which existed to join the creative dots between the first and second albums.

Album sessions began on Osea Island, a tidal island in an estuary off
Essex where the winding coastal road is submerged for 8 in every 12
hours. It was here that SBTRKT began the early stages of the recording
process, inviting a host of collaborators to join him record throughout the
night free from any distraction - the tapes continuously rolled, animation
was projected on the walls and every creative impulse was documented.
Inspired by this new 'open' method of recording, and ready to focus his
new found ideas into more intense sessions, SBTRKT visited America armed
with a wish list of collaborators to track down. It was here he worked with
newcomer Raury, Ezra Koenig from Vampire Weekend, A$AP Ferg and
    Emily Kokal from Warpaint.

    Dome Branches: The MVP Demos

In 2008 double bassist/singer-songwriter Nat Baldwin released Most Valuable
Player, an album that led Pitchfork to say he brings fierce performances to these
polished compositions. Now 5 years later, Western Vinyl is proud to be releasing
the original demos from Most Valuable Player, which were recorded in 2005 and
    2006.

The demo album, titled Dome Branches, features Nat's bandmate from Dirty Projectors, Dave Longstreth on guitar and electronics, Jim Reynolds on guitar, Nate Horton
on drums, Tim Keiper on drums, Matt Bauder on Clarinets, Jess Pavone on viola.
Throughout these demos, there's a remarkable raw energy stemming at least in part
from the fact that Nat hadn't performed any of the material live yet, and Longstreth
hadn't heard the songs before, so his guitar parts were made up on the spot.

After studying avant-garde jazz and improvisation with jazz legend Anthony
Braxton, Nat Baldwin started writing songs featuring double bass and vocals. In
2005 he joined Dirty Projectors. In addition to his work with Dirty Projectors, he has
performed on Grizzly Bear's Sheilds, Vampire Weekend's Contra, and Department of
Eagles' In Ear Park. In between touring and recording with Dirty Projectors, Nat
made time to record his 2011 album People Changes, an album that led Pitchfork to
say whether Baldwin is singing with his throat or his bow, there's a thrilling felling
of freedom to it all. More recently, he's been writing, recording, and arranging
songs for a new album to be released in 2014. You can hear some of the new material live this September when Nat tours in the US and Canada.

    South America

    Colored Vinyl!

When it came to writing their sophomore album South America, Thieves And Villains decided to sculpt the album as if they were the only four people on earth to hear it. Looking for a new sense of direction, the band mentally escaped to a beautiful hiding place that they named South America. They found that this venture in their collective minds would allow them to be free, which in-turn, helped create music that excited them, and that they would ultimately fall in love with.

However, the record was still being created under the same confines as many bands today; a spastic sinking ship of a country that has never been as stressed out, paranoid, or misled as it is right now, an America that is truly going "south." The result of this is the album title that came to represent the dichotomy of one location being the place you hate and love the most; the place you escape to, yet the place you despise.

Thieves And Villains took the same indie-rock vibe as Vampire Weekend, combined it with the childlike sense of wonder found in an early Daneil Johnston song, and added the quirkiness implemented in the Pinkerton-era of Weezer. With the help of producer Tim Gilles, the band took an old approach and made it new again. In a world of over-produced and over-auto-tuned songs recorded take after take, they set out to bring music as a whole, back to its roots.

"We recorded the entire album to analog tape on Mr. Gilles' vintage tape machines and used all our own gear and live tones. We didn't do takes of anything to death and approached every section with a real 'what you see is what you get' logic. What you're listening to is not the product of hours of tweaking, its the product of a few friends having fun and making music the old fashioned way." Black Hours (Deluxe Edition)

    Includes Bonus 4 Track EP
