Lush and sprawling, 'Coke Machine Glow' is Gord Downie's debut 2001 solo album. Featuring the singles Chancellor and Vancouver Divorce, the album's backing band was credited as the Goddamned Band and included contributions from musicians Julie Doiron, Steven Drake (The Odds), Kevin Hearn (Barenaked Ladies), Josh Finlayson, director Atom Egoyan, and members of The Dinner Is Ruined. 'Coke Machine Glow' highlights Downie's singular poetic story-weaving over sparse, loose production and subdued instrumentation.

Albatross & Four Long Lines (Discontinued)

A standout track and the first single from Montreal's The Besnard Lakes' upcoming LP, The Besnard Lakes Are The Roaring Night, Albatross has all the swagger of a Stevie Nicks-led Fleetwood Mac classic or Roy Orbison re-imagined as a rollicking, snakeskin-booted Mazzy Star, dousing it all in gas and throwing the match as we hear its tale of Vancouver's skid row and its inhabitants. On the flip we get Four Long Lines, a non-album cut that not so much exists within the dark grooves of the vinyl as it does float just above the stereo, embodying the extraterrestrial encounter the song cryptically details.

    Beyond Wilderness

Beyond Wilderness is the debut full-length from Vancouver four-piece Gold & Youth, available May 14, 2013.

The album was produced and recorded by Colin Stewart (Black Mountain, New Pornographers, Dan Mangan) and mixed by Gareth Jones (Depeche Mode, Interpol, Grizzly Bear).

Gold & Youth is Matthew Lyall, Murray Mckenzie, Jeff Mitchelmore and Louise Burns.

Beyond Wilderness is built with dark, expansive synthetic textures, punctuated by programmed drums and interwoven with melancholy vocals, detuned synth melodies and understated guitars.

    Guitar Heroes

Four Telecaster Masters shake up the rock and roll universe on this historic release. Guitar history was made on July 12, 2013 when these guitar heroes performed together at the Vancouver Island MusicFest. * Albert Lee said it best: Welcome to my dream! Rooted in blues and rockabilly influences, this recording includes four legends who have shaped, and changed the sound of popular music from the mid-1950s on. * The musicianship, good taste, camaraderie, respect and history on stage that night made guitar history.

    Indian Ocean

Best known as the lead singer for well loved alt folk band The Be Good Tanyas, Frazey Ford's new album
confirms what we have always suspected - that a great unexplored talent for soul music lay just below
    the surface.

Following up her critically acclaimed solo album Obadiah, Miss Ford returns with the lush, redemptive
Indian Ocean, fulfilling a lifelong dream of working with the Hi Rhythm Section (made famous for
backing up Al Green and Ann Peebles) in the historic Royal Studios in Memphis, Tennessee.

The album's creative cycle spanned over two years, involving two recording trips to Memphis and multiple
studio sessions with Frazey's Vancouver musicians. The iconic architects of the Al Green instrumental
sound-Teenie Hodges (guitar), Charles Hodges (organ) and Leroy Hodges (bass) lent their almighty talents
to help Frazey's songs find their distinctive groove. The end result of all of this collective creative meshing
is Frazey's folk-soul hybrid record that feels both familiar and innovative simultaneously.

Indian Ocean was co-produced and mixed by Frazey's longtime creative partner John Raham in Vancouver
    at Afterlife Studios

    "The best pop band alive."
    - CMJ Monthly

The third album from Vancouver pop
    maestros The New Pornographers
continues to feature Neko Case and Dan
Bejar (Destroyer) as well as new vocalists
Kathryn Calder and Nora O'Connor. Fans
of 'Mass Romantic's' kinkiness will find
immediate appeal, as will those partial to
    'Electric Version's' drive.

Yet the songs on 'Twin Cinema' veer more
toward the rocking and the personal than
the sugar of the earlier work. Chief
singer / songwriter A.C. Newman has
absorbed not just the mechanics of
classic songwriting - but the heart, while
    indulging his admiration of demented
current bands like Fiery Furnaces and
Frog Eyes. Expect to hear influences from
the Moody Blues, Tubeway Army, Wings,
Eno, the Stranglers, 10cc and other
    greats, all filtered through Newman's
warped worldview. A more mature but still
enormously fun record that will see more
touring and promotion than ever before.

    Good Stuff

Since Eric Bibb's breakthrough with the Opus 3 recording Spirit & The Blues in the autumn of 1994, a great deal has happened in Bibb's life. In the spring of 1996 he was an outstanding success at the London Blues Festival and was as equally well received in Canada at the Vancouver Folk & Blues Festival. Both occasions were shared by slide guitarist Göran Wennerbrandt who also produced Good Stuff.

Good Stuff features the same musicians who contributed to the success of Spirit & The Blues, including the gospel quartet The Deacons. Bibb wrote ten of the fourteen songs himself, with credits shared on three of the others and the remaining instrumental Blacksmith Island was written by the band Needed Time. In style, the album has retained the musical breadth of Spirit & The Blues while being a little more bluesy in feeling. Also included are the radio singles Shingle By Shingle and Good Stuff.

Bear Mountain's electro/dance style blends syncopated bass lines and arpeggiated synth chords with live instrumentation and soaring vocals to produce a style that is unmistakably fresh and powerfully captivating.

With a vocal timbre reminiscent of Ray Lamontagne, and an emotive, spacious sensibility in the vein of Damien Rice, Bear Mountain performs with powerful release and vulnerable honesty.

Certain songs make you feel younger. It's something more than nostalgia; there's a joyous enthusiasm in some music that doesn't bring you back to the time you were young, but back to the sensation of being young. With the six songs on their debut album, xo, Vancouver duo Bear Mountain achieve this heart-pumping, smile-widening freedom, parsing the elements of dozens of genres and times and spinning them around until the listener becomes gleefully dizzy. - Adam Kivel

    Five Spanish Songs

Five Spanish Songs is an EP of songs written by Spanish musician Antonio Luque of the band Sr. Chinarro.

Produced by JC/DC and recorded at their studio in Vancouver earlier this summer, Five Spanish Songs features musical contributions from Nicolas Bragg, David Carswell, John Collins, Stephen Hamm, and Josh Wells.

    Dan Bejar writes:

It was 2013. The English language seemed spent, despicable, not easily singable. It felt over for English; good for business transactions, but that's about it. The only other language I know is Spanish, and the only Spanish songs I really know are those of Sr. Chinarro, led by Antonio Luque. I've been a decades-long fan of how he conducted his affairs, his strange words, his melodies that have always felt so natural (this is important), his bitter songs about painting the light. Something about them, I knew I could do it...

    Club Meds

After a two year hiatus, an induction into fatherhood, and some time to regroup, two-time JUNO Award-winner Dan Mangan has returned under a new moniker, Dan Mangan + Blacksmith. The new name encompasses the spirit of the project's longstanding ensemble members joining the band from Vancouver's experimental music community, Kenton Loewen, Gordon Grdina, John Walsh (and often Jesse Zubot, JP carter and Tyson Naylor) with a communal sensibility that merits the marquee amendment.

Produced by Colin Stewart and Dan Mangan, Club Meds at times evokes images of subtler American-underground innovators like Blonde Redhead or Steve Reich. At other moments, it hits emotional pay dirt reminiscent of British scene-survivors like Peter Gabriel or Radiohead. Blacksmith brings an unmistakable character to Club Meds; a stark glassy edge that swells and sways like a roaring ocean. Through a fog of analog feedback loops and synths, the band's performances breathe deeply and steadily like a dragon at rest.

    Mixtape Of The Open Road

Remember that mix tape your friend made you way back when - the one that's etched in your soul? Martin Sexton's new album Mixtape of the Open Road is that musical cross-country trip, blazing through all territories of style, as you cruise through time and place. This record is a charm bracelet of twelve gems all strung together with the golden thread of what Rolling Stone calls his soul marinated voice. Sexton began to chase his musical dreams singing in the streets of Harvard Square in Cambridge, Massachusetts, gradually and independently working his way to the premiere venues of North America and inspiring fans and musicians along the way. The activity and touring behind his records laid the foundation for the career he enjoys today headlining all the world-class US and Canadian venues and festivals, such as: New York's Carnegie Hall, L.A.''s House of Blues, Bonnaroo, Newport, Montreal and New Orleans Jazz Fests, Edmonton and Vancouver Folk Fests, and Austin City Limits.

    Same Thoughts Different Day

Legendary Canadian punk group Subhumans emerged from the 1978 font of creativity that produced DOA and The Pointed Sticks. They have been part of the Alternative Tentacles family since being included on the infamous Let Them Eat Jellybeans compilation and played shows with Dead Kennedys, Minor Threat, Black Flag, and Bad Brains.

Their first album Incorrect Thoughts was released on Vancouver label Friends Records in 1980. They always planned to make their older material available again, but a now defunct San Francisco label had issued an unauthorized version of Incorrect Thoughts in the '80s which substituted some remixes without the band's knowledge, included tracks which hadn't made the cut for the original album, and changed the cover art. It was an unpleasant mystery for the band and three decades later the former owner of that label was asserting ownership over the original album, preventing its re-release without an expensive and contentious legal tussle.

The Subhumans decided to meet the challenge to their ownership of their own material by rerecording all of the songs from the Incorrect Thoughts album, which they proceeded to do at the Hive Studios in Vancouver, assisted by Jesse Gander. Original members Brian Goble (vocals), Gerry Hannah (bass), Mike Graham (guitar), and newly-recruited drummer Jon Card (formerly with Personality Crisis, SNFU, and DOA among others) got together in 2005 to record a new album of original material, New Dark Age Parade, for Alternative Tentacles (Virus366) and the band had reactivated into a live entity. The intent was neither to slavishly recreate the old recordings nor to radically reinterpret the songs, but updating the sounds and the recording techniques while maintaining the original spirit of the album. As a bonus, Subhumans recorded six additional songs from the same period for the second 12 of a two LP set, some of which had never been recorded before!

    Ulysses

Includes Two Unreleased Tracks Not Available Anywhere Else

Victoria, B.C.'s Current Swell is set to release their new album, Ulysses, on May 6, 2014. The 12-tracks
on Ulysses perfectly deliver the band's textured, deep-groove sound while capturing the energy of their live
show, which has earned them scores of fans across The Americas, Australia and Europe. The band will
debut many of these new songs next month in Austin during SXSW.

Ulysses was produced by Nathan Sabatino (Dr. Dog, Neko Case, Giant Sand) at Vancouver's iconic
Greenhouse Studios. The album captures every bit of warmth the studio's massive Neve console could
provide, as heard on "Rollin'" (a showcase for Stanton's exemplary slide work), the title track "Ulysses,"
rocker "Keys to the Kingdom" and the readymade sing-along "One Day I'll Be Rich."
While Current Swell spent the better part of six months recording their previous album (and Nettwerk
debut), 2012's Long Time Ago, the four band members entered the studio with a clear goal and knocked
    Ulysses out in 20 days.

From appearances at key festivals from Australia to Canada (Byron Bay Bluesfest, Peats Ridge, Rock
The Shores, Ottawa Bluesfest and more), to sold-out headline tours of Brazil, to support slots with such
established artists as Edward Sharpe and The Magnetic Zeros, Dispatch, Xavier Rudd, K'Naan, The
Tragically Hip and even The Beach Boys, Current Swell's infectious sound and raucous live shows have
earned the quartet scores of devoted fans around the word. In 2011, Current Swell earned first place at
Vancouver's Peak Performance Project and headlined a Canada Day concert to a crowd of 45,000.

Black Mountain (10th Anniversary Deluxe Edition)

    Limited Edition Grey Vinyl

It's only a clichÉ because it's true, but the greatest records are timeless. Black Mountain's self-titled debut
album is just such a record. It is a new classic rock, with reference points arcane and clear, its sound fresh,
unfamiliar and irresistible. The work of a small collective of musicians operating from Vancouver, Canada,
far from any industry buzz but firmly in the eye of their own storm of creativity, Black Mountain's debut
album was, of course, a beginning, but it also marked an ending.

Begun as the fourth album for Jerk With A Bomb, the 4-track bedroom project turned non-rock band led
by Stephen McBean that preceded Black Mountain, the songs grew from skeletal sessions cut by McBean
and Josh Wells and honed on the road in empty North American clubs along with Amber Webber. "We'd lay
down the bed tracks, the guitars and drums," remembers McBean. "Matt [Camirand, bass] joined, and we
changed the band name after a dream of how life could be different in the B section between Black Flag and
Black Sabbath. Josh's roommate Jeremy [Schmidt, keys] was lurking about. We asked him if he wanted to
add some synth bleeps or whatever. He came back with all these orchestrated keyboard parts, and we said,
'Oh, you should probably join the band now.'"

They cut the album at the Hive and their jam space in Vancouver, recording in "a big cement room with a
tall ceiling, nice boomy acoustics, lots of natural reverb, on an 8-track reel-to-reel tape recorder." During the
sessions, these elemental first tracks found their true shape: wry & giddy, hypnotic & gracefully heavy, the
dark and powerful blues, and mysterious chugging murk.

The album's initial success saw the band take to the road, leaving their Vancouver enclave for stages across
the world. "It felt like there was a real explosion of excitement at shows," remembers McBean. "We wouldn't
write setlists, we'd just feel the energy in the room and call things out, jamming on songs like 'No Hits' and
'Druganaut.' It was a good time for live rock'n'roll: DJ booths were being transformed back to drum risers,
people were digging 20 minute heady jams and there were bands like Comets On Fire and Oneida out there
who we felt kinship with. I was into Faust and Amon Duul but had no idea of the scene of modern bands
doing that stuff. And then we met those bands, and it was cool. And then we went on tour with
    Coldplay and the adventures continued.

Their jaunt across the world as guests of perhaps the biggest band in the world is a tale for another time,
perhaps: the start of Black Mountain's next chapter, and all that followed. For now, savor the compact,
spacey brilliance of that cosmic, heavy and subtle debut album, expanded now with a raft of delicious bonus
tracks scavenged from the Black Mountain Army archives.

    Keep Away The Dead

Even as Siskiyou's first record was delivered to Constellation in early 2010 and getting prepped for release that fall, Colin Huebert remained holed up in Mara, BC (pop. 350) through the winter, writing more songs and eventually being joined by his Siskiyou co-conspirator Erik Arnesen for a few weeks of intensive recording. Unlike the material on their eponymous debut, which was largely recorded in nomadic fashion while Colin and Erik toured as members of Great Lake Swimmers, the Mara, BC sessions found the pair settled, rooted and with keys in hand to the century-old Mara Community Hall.

Most of the tunes on Keep Away The Dead were born at Mara Hall, where bed tracks were laid down in the crisp air during depth of winter. The arctic atmosphere of that empty, cavernous, hardwood structure was the perfect complement to Huebert's sensibility: a tense and acute restraint; a shivering, biting, sometimes bitter rending of barebones, folk-inflected rock music. (Neil Young remains a clear touchstone, overtly so with the album's cover of Revolution Blues as do the pointed, starkly controlled arrangements and textures of contemporaries like Angels Of Light.)

Huebert left Mara in spring 2010 and moved to Vancouver, where Siskiyou began to take shape as a full band with the addition of Shaunn Watt and Peter Carruthers. Coming off a season of extensive touring in Euope and Canada in fall 2010, Siskiyou had coalesced into an incisive quartet and hit Vancouver's JC/DC Studio in early 2011 with engineer David Carswell (Destroyer, New Pornographers), adding to the previous year's Mara sessions and cutting two more tunes for which Carswell ran the mix: Twigs And Stones and Revolution Blues. Huebert recorded and mixed the remainder of Keep Away The Dead (as he did on the previous record).

Where Siskiyou's debut was a stunning little scrapbook of short, sharp tunes, Keep Away The Dead ramps things up with subtle care and clarity, yielding something closer to a rural gothic novella in spirit and scope. The album is a strikingly cold-eyed, tender-hearted song cycle, marked by quiet defiance and desperation. Huebert's acoustic guitar and gently acetic voice, Arnesen's gorgeous banjo and treated guitar lines, and the judicious rhythm section of Watt and Carruthers deliver a superbly compelling album on the knife's edge of darkness, where each tune feels like another precious log thrown on a lone campfire burning in the cold night.

    Sundowning

Nu Sensae has taken big risks with even bigger payoffs on this release!

Refusing to repeat themselves, however, Lukic and Pitout are proving just how unpredictable they can be, they abandoned their status as a duo, a favorite angle of both the media and fans, and recruited Vancouver noise rock great Brody McKnight as a full-time member. Previously working with the now-legendary group Mutators, McKnight has added another dimension of heaviness to the band's already mind-melting sludge attack.

They've also embraced diversity in other ways, allowing more loud-quiet dynamics into their songwriting. From the creeping dirge of "Tea Swamp Park" to the vast expanse of "Say What You Are," the quiet sections offer brief moments of uneasy solace between the full out attack of songs like "100 Shades," "Tyjna" and "Eat Your Mind."

Elsewhere, subtle but defined melodies surface amidst the fuzz of tracks like "Burnt Masks" and "Dust." Don't be mistaken, though: Sundowning is designed to bludgeon with the raw aggression that can only come from the best elements of noise, punk and grunge.

    Untogether

Blue Hawaii decided to make Untogether in 2012; they began recording on New Years Day in Vancouver and intermittently worked on the project until summer broke in Montreal. The music followed their winter in Canada, it became colder, more introspective. It again captured a time and place, but instead of a dense saturation of love and excitement, this record reflects the vast world of self-awareness and delicacy. It takes for its subject the question of belonging, despite overwhelming space.

Musically, the production on the album is more spacious and physically it was recorded in separation. Despite this, it belongs together in its final form. It demonstrates successful creative process in a pair who composed apart, and in doing so it is a meditation on communication: how technology and art influence modern human relationships. It contains the vast space of two years passing, including watching their Montreal scene change as some launched into international success and others turned deeper inwards. Here, the album finds the conflict of separation/belonging to one's self and community.

The duo notice that throughout the changing social and personal landscape which is one's twenties, these divided notions and people somehow stay together. Even the name Blue Hawaii suggests a kind of melancholic, jaded paradise, but a paradise afterall. It is because - or perhaps in spite of - these disjointed intersections that the record is called Untogether.

    Shine On

Three Time Grammy Winner and legendary singer songwriter makes her Verve debut with her eighth studio album, SHINE ON. Sarah has sold over 40
million albums in her career and is one of the most respected female artists in music today.

The new album was recorded in Vancouver with longtime collaborator/producer Pierre Marchand (the co-writer of hits like Adia and Building a
Mystery), along with contributions from producer/songwriter Bob Rock (Michael BublÉ, Nelly Furtado) and keyboardist Vincent Jones.

In a press release, McLachlan revealed that the album was inspired by her father's passing and her own appreciation of life: "This album is about moving
through the second half of my life in a more mindful and meaningful way, recognizing that every day, every moment is precious and though we all have
our issues and problems, our damages, we all have the ability to continue to learn, grow from our experiences, thrive and shine on. Many of the songs are
inspired at least partially or wholly by my father's passing three years ago and the profound effect losing him had on me. I had to find my footing again
without the anchor of his unconditional love.

    Deep Fantasy

Resilient and hard hitting rock n' roll outfit, White Lung are set to release their third album Deep Fantasy via Domino Recording Co. The band is every bit as confrontational as before, but they've managed to open their sound up just enough to draw listeners in before kicking them in the face. (In a good way.)

After a year plus of near constant touring behind Sorry - which won raves from Pitchfork, Rolling Stone and Interview -White Lung slimmed to a trio in the studio; vocalist Mish Way, drummer Anne-Marie Vassiliou and guitarist Kenneth William. Deep Fantasy was made primarily in Vancouver with producer Jesse Gander (who also did both Sorry and their 2010 debut It's The Evil) in just two, ten day-long sessions at the end of last year and the start of this one. William handled bass duties on Deep Fantasy while Wax Idols' Hether Fortune will take up bass and backing vocal duties on tour for the foreseeable future.

Way is more provocative and melodic than ever on Deep Fantasy, lyrically surveying addiction ("Drown With The Monster"), body dysmorphia ("Snake Jaw") and sexual dynamics ("Down It Goes,") amongst other dinner table topics. William, a devotee of Johnny Marr "plays with the speed of an 80s hardcore dude" whirled in Vassiliou's relentless and seemingly effortless approach to drumming.

    Poison Season

Poison Season opens with Vancouver native Dan Bejar swathed in Hunky Dory strings. He's a dashboard Bowie surveying four wracked characters-Jesus, Jacob, Judy, Jack-simultaneously Biblical and musical theatre. This bittersweet, Times Square-set fanfare is reprised twice more on the record-first as swaying, saxophone-stoked "street-rock" and then finally as a curtain-closing reverie. "The first and last songs are actually one song tracked live with quintet," explains their author. "I even sang with the band. That song always swung between super austere and super mid-'70s Springsteen/Bowie street-rock. In the end, I decided I wanted both. Couldn't really figure out a way to sequence the orchestral version within the record, so I decided to carve it up as a book-ending motif, with the rock version squarely in the middle." Mr. Bejar has long displayed a chameleonic instinct for change while maintaining a unified aesthetic (rather than just pinballing between reference points). No two records sound the same, but they're always uniquely Destroyer. His latest incarnation often appears to take sonic cues from a distinctly British (usually Scottish, to be precise) strain of sophisti-pop: you might hear traces of Aztec Camera, Prefab Sprout, Orange Juice, or The Blow Monkeys. These songs merge a casual literary brilliance with intense melodic verve, nimble arrangements, and a certain blue-eyed soul sadness.
