    Automaton

Gossamer is Evan Reiner-the producer, guitarist, synthesizer scientist and
urban-spelunking field recorder whose full-length debut Automaton dissolves
the genre-breaking electronica of Autechre and Boards of Canada into a
bottomless sea of found sound and ambient atmosphere. It's less an album than
an environment all its own, or a journey into the unexplored. And whether it's
inspiring a trip deep into the discography of Steve Reich or into California's
beautifully desolate Ansel Adams Wilderness, it's that fearless spirit of
exploration that brought Automaton to life.

Reiner grew up in the L.A. neighborhood of Eagle Rock with a father telling war
stories about seeing Black Flag and the Germs play and with a set of cousins
who'd get him started listening to hip-hop. (Especially instrumentals by
iconoclastic producers like Premier, RZA and New York's crushing DITC crew,
Reiner remembers.) As he turned 16, he was playing guitar "religiously," he says,
as well as listening intently to Slayer and Cannibal Corpse on the way to
ferocious hardcore shows on the fringes of Los Angeles.

By the time he graduated high school, he was a hardcore kid with a heavy
grounding in hip-hop who'd developed so tremendously as a guitarist that he
was practicing notoriously formidable Django Reinhardt songs for fun. The
connection might not seem obvious, but it was there nonetheless-these were
three distinct musical forms equally dedicated to passion, individual technique
    and total commitment to expression.

He won admission to the prestigious Berklee School of Music in Boston, where
his first semesters in the fall of 2009 were everything he'd hoped. But the more
he studied, the clearer it became that he'd need to strike out on his own: "So
many professors would tell their students what the right thing to do was in a
creative setting," he says now. "There is no right way."

He'd once used his computer just to help with his composition homework, but
now he was restless. So he began to focus on the potential of electronic music:
"I realized it was like having every component of a band at your fingertips," he
says. "It felt free and genuine with no distractions." He'd begun to make his own
field recordings, too, capturing the sounds of Boston at sunrise and stirring
them into his beat experiments. Intense study of movie sound and foley artistry,
like pouring sand across drum cymbals or using spent shells from a gun range
for percussion, gave him a whole new vocabulary, and he found further
inspiration in artists from Ai Weiwei to Maya Duren to Stanley Kubrick to Delia
Derbyshire-people who blew open the boundaries of their own disciplines.
Then in July 2013, he began to make what would become his first full-length
album as Gossamer. He'd rent an armful of microphones and hike to the tunnels
under Pasadena's eerie Devil's Gate Dam, site of suicides and barely-thwarted
summonings in the tradition of Aleister Crowley. ("The echo is crazy," he says.)
During a month in Japan, he recorded "terrifying trains" and cicadas and the
squeals of a rusting bicycle. He'd record himself smashing trash under a bridge
in downtown L.A., or knocking rebar against rotting wood 8,000 feet above sea
level in California's Ansel Adams Wilderness Area. Then he'd come
home-whether "home" at that particular moment was his own studio, a capsule
hotel in Japan, a friend's place in Boston or a temporary space in New York-and
"make accidents happen," he says, with recorders and samplers and guitar and
(this time) a stable of analog synthesizers.

The result was Gossamer's Automaton, a precise and gentle dreamscape of
experimental electronica, where the ambient atmosphere of Gas drifts across
the fractured beats of Autechre or Boards of Canada. It starts with its own
sunrise on "Thoughtform," where birdsong melts into ghostly vocals and waves
of synthesizer, and then shifts into the haunting "Print," which transplants the
sci-fi sensibilities of Vangelis to some desolate and wild new world. His "Okuma"
is like a Tortoise song that never touches solid ground, while tracks like [3] and
[5] recall the Brian Eno of Fourth World, somehow ancient and futuristic at
once. When the crickets start chirping on closer "-;- ", it's a signal that the
day-and the journey-are both coming to an end. It's might be his first album,
but it's also a first step towards something new.

"Automaton is me," Reiner explains. "It's my process. It's a symbol of having
accepted that there is a difference between being alone and being lonely. It's a
coping mechanism for the struggle to realize and balance what I am and am not
in control of in my life. It reminds me of playing Bioshock and watching Blade
Runner at the same time while naked in the jungle on another planet. It makes
me think of watching an old home video of myself and seeing Neptune right
outside my window. The list goes on and on-I could go forever."

    BBC The Radiophonic Workshop

    180 Gram Audiophile Vinyl

    Remastered

Available On Vinyl For The 1st Time

The BBC Radiophonic Workshop, set up in 1958, was originally created as a sound effects unit for BBC Radio and TV programs. Pioneering new forms of drama during the late 1950s and early 60s demanded innovative and original use ofmusic and sound. The art of what became known as sounddesign began in the cramped undergroundstudiosof the Radiophonic Workshop at the BBC Maida Vale complex in London. Their early explorations into sound drew on the principles of musique concrete, early tape manipulation techniques and primitive oscillators and tone circuits built by technicians at the workshop. As technology developed and the synthesizer, tape technology, computers and early digital sampling emerged the Radiophonic Workshop maintained an their position at the leading edge of electronic music and sound design.

The vast body of work that emerged between 1960 and 1997 has influenced generations of musicians both within electronica and more widely in the Rock, Progressive and Pop field. Groundbreaking work such as Delia' Darbyshire's 1963 Doctor Who Theme (still the high water mark of experimental music), sound effects albums, works of early electronica and popular favourites such as Blake's 7 and The Hitchhiker's Guide To the Galaxy have ensured the RWS a place at electronica's top table. From the Beatles, Pink Floyd and Vangelis to Orbital, The Chemical Brothers and beyond, their legacy lives on in the sounds and textures of so much contemporary music. But it isn't just musicians who have drawn on their work.

The technical development of the studio and modern recording techniques owes them a great debt too. Sound engineer Roger Mayer, who supplied effects pedals to Jeff Beck, Jimmy Page and Jimi Hendrix, is just one of many engineers for whom their work proved inspirational. He described the Workshop as, ''the great unsung heroes of British electronica.''

These two records, recorded in 1968 and 1975 respectively, were released at the height of The Radiophonic Workshop's influence. They showcase the dawning of processed sound, treated sounds and sound design.

Quirky and irreverent BBC Radiophonic Music was originally put out as a specialist demonstration library disc for BBC drama producers. In 1971 the BBC released it commercially. This is the first time it has been made available on vinyl in its first and original form.

The Radiophonic Workshop from 1975 was a compilation of the best-known of the Radiophonic Workshop's output to date. This is the first time it has seen a vinyl reissue in its original form.

Both albums have been remastered for vinyl from the original tapes by the Radiophonic Workshop's archivist Mark Ayres. Pressed on 180 gram audiophile vinyl.

    Blade Runner 2049 Soundtrack

The Blade Runner 2049 soundtrack highlights the entrancing, ethereal, and enigmatic original score composed by Academy® Award winner Hans Zimmer [Inception, The Dark Knight, Gladiator, The Lion King] and Golden Globe® & Emmy® nominee Benjamin Wallfisch [It, Hidden Figures, Annabelle: Creation]. Original and classic compositions round out this sci-fi noir masterpiece. Finally, the album concludes with an original song by GRAMMY® Award nominee, Lauren Daigle. Over a backdrop of cyber-infused soul production, it delivers a hypnotic and haunting performance.

Together, Zimmer and Wallfisch sought to continue the incredible musical legacy of the original 1982 Blade Runner by Vangelis, while imparting a piece of themselves upon the score. In order to do so, they implemented vintage synths such as "the star of the score" a Yamaha CS80 from the late seventies as well as modern technological innovations, yielding a rich sonic palette wholly cognizant of this world and the vision of director Denis Villeneuve.

"First of all, I realized that Denis is a director who has a vision; he has a voice," says Zimmer. "Remember, I've done a lot of movies with Ridley Scott. So, it was important that this was an autonomous piece of work. Let's just be honest. Ridley is a hard act to follow-as is Vangelis. While Ben was four-years-old, I had actually experienced all of this," he laughs. "We watched and literally, as we stopped watching, we decided on the palette. We decided this wasn't going to be an orchestral thing. The story spoke to us."

"We all know what Blade Runner feels like and what that experience is to watch this incredible masterpiece," adds Wallfisch. The first question we asked ourselves was, 'How can we reinvent and make it fresh and new, but still be in that world?' The mission from the beginning was this idea of finding the heart of the film-what is its soul? When you discover the simplest possible theme, it sums up humanity almost. I feel like that's what we were all striving for towards the beginning of the process."

In a feature detailing the film's Oscar potential, Variety highlighted the aural balance that Zimmer and Wallfisch achieve writing, "Zimmer and Wallfisch's score maintains proper reverence for and distance from Vangelis' iconic original work."

Following on from the phenomenal success of their RSD release of FAR CRY 3: BLOOD DRAGON's, Invada partner with Ubisoft Music and dive once again into the world of video game soundtracks with the release of Brian Reitzell's musical score to the highly-anticipated WATCH_DOGS. Full of infectious beats and atmospheric, retro-futuristic synths, the score is a further achievement from Reitzell, who has previously written music for drama series HANNIBAL as well as working on multiple scores with director Sofia Coppola. To represent the varied challenges of the game, Reitzell brings an eclectic feel to the score, with thumping beats and off-kilter melodies of the club scene juxtaposed with the more ethereal and atmospheric synth and guitar, evoking the music of Vangelis and Brian Eno - ideal for a post-noir cyberpunk game.

    Through A Glass Darkly

Two essential recordings from Radiophonic Workshop members Paddy Kingsland & Peter Howell get the reissue treatment on June 2nd with the vinyl only release of Kingsland's exceptional 1973 album Fourth Dimension, alongside fellow member Peter Howell's ARP synth opus, 1978's Through A Glass Darkly. Both of these albums have been crate diggers' gold for many years and are reissued for the very first time.

The BBC Radiophonic Workshop came together in 1958 to produce music and sound effects for BBC Radio and Television programmes using hand built, custom designed electronic, tape and electro-acoustic techniques. By the mid-1970s, the synthesiser era was well-and-truly here, with the Workshop increasingly being asked to provide theme tunes and background music for TV and radio.

Production on Peter Howell's first solo album Through a Glass Darkly started in 1977, with Peter given the opportunity to develop a new suite of compositions specifically to cover one side of the album, albeit on a typically tight BBC time schedule and virtually non-existent budget! The album stands shoulder to shoulder with Vangelis's Beauborg and Jean Michel Jarre's Equinoxe, in terms of its influence and pioneering use of synthesizers.

    O Soundtrack My Heart

Pivot is a rare combination of the emotive and cerebral, harnessing the raw garage energy of three explosive musicians along-side intensive studio production. Part prog-warrior, part slacker geek, the band's music and approach provide something much needed in the world of music. Pivot's sound exudes an omnipresent sense of melodrama and what can only be described as a sort of 'apocalyptic joy.' For fans of The Talking Heads and Vangelis.

Taking the term "full-length" quite literally, the album is made up of three epic side-long journeys through time and space. Merging the darkness of Vangelis' Blade Runner-era Moog-driven scores and the stately minimalism of Steve Reich and Philip Glass with the relentless drive of Can and Silver Apples, Timespan delivers inspiring sci-fi disco of the highest caliber.

This French duo gained inclusion into the late-'90s electronica surge due chiefly to the labels their recordings appeared on, not the actual music they produced. Their sound, a variant of the classic disco sound coaxed into a relaxing Prozac vision of the late '70s, looked back to a variety of phenomena from the period -- synthesizer maestros Tomita, Jean-Michel Jarre, and Vangelis, new wave music of the non-spiky variety, and obscure Italian film soundtracks. Ritualize (Awaiting Repress)

    ...attitude-thick rapping...with gorgeous
    production...
    - The New York Times

    "Lushlife is an under-the-radar treasure"
    - Stereogum

From the moment you hear the bristling boom-bap chorus on album-opener
Totally Mutual Feeling, it's apparent that Lushlife's third full-length finds the
Philadelphia rapper-producer at his most introspective. Themes of isolation and
mortality permeate Ritualize, a cinematic hour-long odyssey co-produced by
enigmatic production trio, CSLSX (pronounced Casual Sex) and featuring
contributions from Ariel Pink, Killer Mike, Freeway, Marissa Nadler, RJD2, and
more. With CSLSX at the boards, an entire universe opens up for Lush, where
the pulsating Juno synths of '80s LA night music sit side-by-side with
gorgeously propulsive indie-leaning jams, and low-fi soul burners too. The
resulting LP is a post-blog-era joint that seems to exhale the whole of the 20th
century in a single, fascinating breath.

After toiling over two self-produced LPs in the last half-decade, I felt
compelled to bring on an outside production team for Ritualize, Lushlife
(born Raj Haldar) explains. Not only did I want to broaden the musical
palette, but I felt like the group production effort would give me a depth of
focus on lyrical content and emotion that I hadn't previously been afforded.
After a chance encounter with CSLSX, who had been quietly self-releasing
low-fi dance gems to remarkable organic blog buzz, the newly-formed team
set out on a three-year journey that would eventually yield their new joint
album. By the time work began on Ritualize, Lush had already been riding a
small wave of critical acclaim for his 2012 full-length, Plateau Vision, an album
that made several year-end lists and was described by the Sunday New York
Times as a melding of captivating rhymes with audacious, gorgeous production.
Still, with Ritualize, Lushlife and CSLSX seem to have gone one deeper.

From album cut, The Waking World, which finds Lushlife spitting thorough
sixteens from the vantage of Mark David Chapman lying in wait for John
Lennon, to Incantation, a song that's as much inspired by Allen Ginsberg's
Howl as the general, street-level anxieties of urban life, Ritualize is nothing short
of a step forward. For proof, look no further than Toynbee Suite, a 10-minute,
4-movement rap epic that explores the strange Toynbee Tile meta-art
conspiracy that has captivated Philadelphians for decades. As the centerpiece
of the album, Toynbee Suite was the subject of a 2013 documentary, and
itself represents the combined work of 20+ musicians, including RJD2, Nightlands,
Yikes the Zero, and a full chamber orchestra. On the other hand, the
CSLSX-produced, Hong Kong (Lady of Love), a collaboration with weird
music godhead, Ariel Pink, is a sparse yet powerful four-on-the-floor ode to LA,
inspired by the film soundtrack work of Giorgio Moroder, Vangelis, and others.
