    Vertical Horizon is an American alternative rock band formed at Georgetown University in Washington, D.C. in 1991. Everything You Want is the third studio album by Vertical Horizon and was originally released in 1999. Everything You Want served as the debut of bassist Sean Hurley in the band and proved to be their most successful effort.


    The first four tracks of the album were all released as singles. Everything You Want became one of the most radio played singles of 2000, reaching #1 on the Billboard Hot 100. The video for You're a God featured actress Tiffani-Amber Thiessen. The song is featured in the 2003 film Bruce Almighty. Finding Me was featured on the fifth Season opener of Buffy the Vampire Slayer.


    The album is now finally available on vinyl in Europe for the first time. A limited run of 750 copies will be available on transparent vinyl. The package also contains a lyric sheet.

    Daughter of Everything

    Vertical Scratchers is John Schmersal (ex-Brainiac/Enon, live Caribou,
    and Crooks on Tape) and Christian Beaulieu (ex-Triclops!/Anywhere).
    Vertical Scratchers formed in Los Angeles in 2012. John and Christian
    met at a Thanksgiving party, began hanging out, and then just decided
    to be a band together. John says, "I love Christian's drumming because
    he approaches it like a songwriter, as he is one in his own right. There
    aren't really drum fills-more like rhythmic accents that punctuate
    what is happening at that point in the song itself."


    One of the most persistent elements you will hear throughout the
    record is the percussive nature in which the guitars were played and
    recorded. Guitar playing is vertical scratching, and in this band, the
    guitar strums are almost louder than the amps. John explains, "Part
    of the aesthetic we were establishing when writing Vertical Scratchers
    songs was to maintain a sense of urgency and raw energy without
    relying on volume and distortion. I wanted the guitars to sound light
    and jangly, and most songs were purposefully sung in a soft falsetto."
    Most Vertical Scratchers songs clock in under the two-minute mark
    but often go in twice as many directions as your average-length song.
    Pop deception. Think the Kinks with a Buzzcocks brevity.


    Daughter of Everything was recorded live in Los Angeles at The Smell
    in September of 2012. The special guest appearance lead vocal from
    Robert Pollard was recorded at Waterloo Sound in Ohio by Todd
    Tobias.

    The carefully hand-assembled Universal is Clearaudio's finest pivoted tonearm. Its vertical and horizontal ball bearing assembly is precision-machined to ultra-high tolerances.     Ortofon Stereo Test Record

    Ortofon's new Test Record is designed to allow you to verify your HiFi system in the most natural audio surroundings at home. The Test Record contains special test signals developed for analyzing cartridge performance as well as its interaction with your tonearm and turntable.


    Before testing your cartridge, please verify the HiFi system's functionality. The left speaker should be connected to the left amplifier channel and vice versa; both speakers should work in phase and be optimally positioned in the room.
    The Test Record is designed to be played through your system with in-built RIAA equalization. Volume control is recommended to be set at a moderate signal level.


    Please refer to your turntable and tonearm's instructions for correct installation and alignment, adjust tonearm to be parallel to record surface, set Vertical Tracking Force and antiskating according to the cartridge's recommended technical data, and adjust stylus overhang.

    Each side of the record consists of 15 tracks which have been cut from 1-4 and 5-15:

    1-4 Frequency sweep - a tool for checking frequency response
    There are several factors which can affect frequency response, including cable capacitance, cartridge loading, tracking force and worn parts. Because of this, it can be difficult to achieve perfectly flat frequency response. Sometimes by making small compromises in the cartridge loading, a better overall frequency response can be achieved. Considering the above the signal must be clean throughout the sweep.


    5-8 Reference tone for testing channel output
    With this standard reference signal is it possible to check the correctness of the connections of the left and right channels, channel balance and speed of the turntable.


    9 -14 Tracking ability test, 315 Hz lateral modulation
    These tracks contain a 315 Hz signal, recorded at increasing pick amplitudes of 50, 60, 70, 80, 90 and 100 micrometers. Please refer to your cartridge's tracking ability value specified in the technical data sheet. Your cartridge should be able to track the actual level without audible distortion. Inability to track can be heard as a departure from a pure tone or a sputtering and intermittent tone. To determine if it is one or both channels, the balance control can be utilized. In case of differing tracking ability in the left and right channels it is probably necessary to readjust the anti-skating correction of the tonearm. If both channels fail to track properly, then vertical tracking force should be increased until no further improvement of tracking force can be obtained.


    15. Square Wave Form 2.7 msec duty cycle 3:7
    When monitoring the output of your cartridge with an oscilloscope you'll then see a square wave located precisely above each other if the connection from the cartridge is correct.


    After successful completion of the above test procedures, you can ensure that your cartridge is optimized. Still the human ear is very sensitive to difference in tone distortion; its level depends on the stylus condition and record wear.

    Phono cartridges usually need a running-in period to reach their full potential. This can take anything from 40 to 100 hours, depending upon the manufacturer, design and construction of the phono cartridge.


    This Clearaudio Cartridge Break-In Record is a unique too. Playing an endless groove cut with pink noise significantly reduces the length of the break-in period.


    Six continuous pink noise tracks are provided at various positions on the record (track numbers are 5, 6, 7, 9, 10 and 11).


    To enable frequency response measurement of the phono cartridge, track 3 comprises a sine-wave frequency sweep from 20 Hz to 20 kHz.


    There are two separate 240-second tracks containing a pink noise signal for measuring and testing the set-up of the whole system.


    Tracks 4 and 13 are recorded with no signal to test the noise floor of the entire hi-fi system.


    Finally, tracks 8 and 12 contain a special signal to optimise and adjust the anti-skating force. Both channels are recorded with a 316 Hz sine-wave with continually changing phase difference from 0 to 360 deg, so that the stylus movement repeatedly changes from lateral to vertical and back again. The signal level changes accordingly from -22 dB to +8 dB, corresponding to a maximum velocity of 9.81 cm/s or a maximum displacement of 50 lm, horizontally or vertically.

    Rega has pioneered the use of lightweight rigid plinths. Clever use of lightweight particulate core with a highly rigid phenolic resin skin became the foundations of the high level of performance achieved by the now iconic original Planar range.


    The new Planar 3 takes this design philosophy to the next level. A lightweight acrylic laminated plinth strengthened using a new improved double brace system mounted specifically where the increased rigidity is required (between the tonearm mounting and the main hub bearing) which forms a structurally sound stressed beam assembly. This rigid plinth design prevents energy absorption and unwanted resonance, which will add unnatural distortions to the music.


    Equally, heavier mass can transfer more unwanted energy, such as motor or bearing noise directly into the rotating record. The use of braces instead of the complete skin allows double thickness phenolic resin in these key areas while providing further weight reduction to the plinth which directly addresses the issue of mass absorption and unwanted energy transmission.

    Analogue Productions set out to produce the ultimate test record.


    We've consulted many experts in the field, including mastering engineers, audio experts, turntable experts and audiophile listeners, to create a test record that's never been made before. When Barry Wolifson from Sterling Sound in New York City called us with the same idea we had been thinking about - that being to create the ultimate test record - he and our audio expert Clark Williams began to brainstorm and research ideas until they were both completely satisfied with what should go on the record.


    Most of the test records in the past have been made to test a variety of equipment. This test record excludes silly cannon shots, typewriters, voices on one channel and other useless fluff. This one specifically addresses your turntable and cartridge. It's designed to provide the basic test signals necessary to calibrate a turntable or cutting lathe as simply as possible. Most of the signals have specific implications, but it is certainly possible to use them in any number of novel ways.


    This record was mastered and cut on a Neumann VMS 80 lathe at Sterling Sound and pressed at Record Technology, Inc. on high-quality, 180-gram virgin vinyl.


    Side 1

    General Reference Level

    This 1 kHz reference tone will allow you to establish a "base level" for all measurements.
    Track 1 1Khz reference tone 7cm/s Mono, in phase (Lateral)

    Basic reference for all measurements, adjust meter for maximum convenience (in the studio 0VU).
    Adjust preamp channel balance for equal output.
    Also used to check the offset angle of the photo cartridge; L&R signals should be exactly in phase as displayed on an oscilloscope.


    Azimuth Adjustment

    Track 2 1kHz reference level Left channel only

    Measure Right channel output.

    Track 3 1kHz reference level Right channel only

    Measure Left channel output.

    The object is to sit the stylus exactly perpendicular in the groove.

    Twist cartridge about its radial axis until the measurements from Track 2 and Track 3 are equal or very close to equal for both channels.


    High Frequency Adjustment

    Tracks 4, 5 and 6 are used to calibrate the RIAA high frequency equalizer of a phono preamp. This will be used to calibrate a mastering lathe's phono preamplifier or any phono preamplifier that has these adjustments.

    Track 4 1 kHz tone at -20 below reference level, Lateral

    Reference for High Frequency test.

    Track 5 10 kHz reference tone at -20dbu, Lateral
    Adjust the high frequency until the output level equals that of Track 4.

    Track 6 1 kHz to 20 kHz sweep at -20dbu, Mono (Lateral)

    The AC millivoltmeter reading should stay constant across all frequencies. There are a number of factors which can affect frequency response, including cable capacitance, cartridge loading, tracking force and worn parts. Because of this, it can be difficult to achieve perfectly flat frequency response. Sometimes by making small compromises in the 10 kHz adjustment, a better overall frequency response can be achieved.


    Low Frequency Adjustment

    Tracks 7 & 8 are used to calibrate the RIAA low frequency equalizer of a phono preamp.

    Track 7 1 kHz to 20 Hz sweep at 0 VU (Lateral)

    Play Track 7 and measure the output with your AC millivolt meter.

    Ideally, the output will be flat across all frequencies. When viewed on an oscilloscope, the amplitude would remain constant during the frequency downsweep.

    Using an IMD tester, adjust VTA by raising or lowering the tonearm for minimum distortion.

    The Wow & Flutter meter will give dynamic speed variations as a percentage deviation from nominal.

    Also, the frequency counter should read exactly 3150 Hz for nominal speed. You can use the Hz function on your multi-meter (if so equipped) to verify speed here as well. You can also use to find the measurements at 45RPM. The correct reading at 45RPM would be 4253 Hz (45/33.33) x 3150.

    Track 1 Anti-skating test; 315Hz amplitude sweep to +12dbu (Lateral)

    Signal should remain clean in both channels up to the highest level, both audibly and as viewed on an oscilloscope. In case of distortion, increase anti-skating force or decrease anti-skate until breakup occurs equally in both channels. The left channel information is inscribed on the inner groove wall, the right channel information, on the outer groove wall. Because of the offset angle of a pivoted tonearm, a constantly varying vector force biases the arm towards the center of the record causing the stylus to lose contact with the outer (i.e. right channel) groove wall. Both linear and modulated groove velocity, tracking force, stylus profile, and vinyl composition are contributing factors. The anti skating force attempts to ameliorate this by applying an opposing similar force.

    It is also accepted that the overall force vector increases as the tonearm approaches closer to the spindle or end of the record.

    You can also use this track to loosen up the cantilever's suspension to help break in a new cartridge. Play these tracks five to ten times after every 300 hours of normal LP playback.

    This out-of-phase signal should cancel to nothing when summed to mono.

    Any signals still present are distortion artifacts, lack of channel balance, or timing (phase) anomalies. This test can be a second confirmation of anti-skate adjustment.

    Resonance anomalies in the tonearm / cartridge interface will show up as amplitude peaks and dips as the frequency sweeps down.

    Once again, by listening in 'Mono' it is easier to hear the distortion artifacts.


    Track 6 Silent groove for bearing rumble and table isolation

    During playback of this track, nothing should be transmitted from the turntable to the speakers. Replay the track and gently tap on the rack or base that the turntable is resting on. There should be little or no thump transferred to the speakers. This track will help you experiment with turntable isolation methods and products to be able to get the most out of your playback system. You may want to use a closed or sealed headphone for best listening results, or a stethoscope on the plinth.

    The Hudson is a partial horn-loaded three-way loudspeaker system. Utilizing a direct radiating 15" woofer for low frequencies, and modern high-efficiency compression drivers mated to state-of-the-art horns which cover the all important midrange and highest frequencies, these big horn, small form loudspeakers offer the bass response, efficiency, dynamic capabilities, low distortion, and scale of much larger designs in a much smaller enclosure.


    The Hudson began life as a design project which attempted to marry the virtues of direct radiating bass with the largest horns possible. Initially, the Hudson was a two-chassis design. After a great deal of testing, and experimentation with different cabinet designs, Ampsandsound were successful in our quest to create a true full-range speaker system operating from 34hz - 20khz in a single enclosure.


    Its compact size makes it easier to install in most rooms and minimizes room interactions. The Hudson offers a delicate balance of scale, tonal accuracy, and rich detail in a design that will appeal to audiophiles who desire all of the positive attributes of horn-loaded designs but without the issues of size and room interaction that are inherent to many designs.


    The loudspeaker features a sophisticated, hand-wired crossover network, which utilizes high-order filters, and large air-core inductors for low signal loss. If the heart of the Hudson is its horns and midrange, the crossover represents its cerebral cortex. Ampsandsound spent countless hours on the crossover, in order to create a state-of-the-art design that minimizes frequency overlap, and achieves phase coherence and perfect time alignment.


    All three crossovers are hand-made and built to the same rigorous standards as our amplifiers and loudspeakers, utilizing Hyper-litz inductors and low Q capacitors. Each combined crossover weighs more than twenty-two pounds and is unlike anything you've seen or heard in horn-loaded loudspeakers.


    The Hudson's bass section utilizes a 15 woofer in a direct-radiating configuration that is front-ported to minimize interaction with front walls. Through the use of FFT analysis, ampsandsound has carefully built an inert cabinet that features strategic bracing and dampening. As a result, the Hudson is capable of high output with minimal excursion, and greatly reduced levels of distortion over conventional designs.


    The heart of the Hudson is its large CNC-cut midrange horn, which utilizes a hybrid tractrix flare, providing controlled horizontal dispersion and limiting vertical dispersion to reduce room interactions. The midrange horn is mated to a 2 large-format midrange compression driver with a 4 voice coil. The combination of a large, precision-made wood horn with a large throat and large midrange compression driver has resulted in a midrange that is tonally accurate, yet rich with detail. The midrange is smooth, fast-sounding, and easy to listen to for hours.


    The tweeter combines a 1 compression driver coupled to conical-tractrix hybrid horn providing exceptional polar responses without dips and peaks associated with other horn designs. The Hudson's tweeter offers both great extension, detail, and a true sense of airiness; which allows the loudspeaker to create a large and deep soundstage even when placed close to the wall behind it.

    The Seneca is AmpsandSound's nod to studio monitors. Inspired by the flat response and dynamic range of the best studio monitors from TAD and JBL, the Seneca is a 2way horn loaded monitor.     The Seneca like the Hudson is a partial horn-loaded loudspeaker system configured as an ultra-wide bandwidth 2way. The foundation of the Seneca is a direct radiating 15" woofer for low frequencies, providing usable bass into the 35hz range and crossing to the Mid-Horn @ 500hz. The Seneca mates a modern high-efficiency compression driver to Elliptical traxtrix horn. The reduction of a crossover point and driver increases coherence without sacrificing high frequency information.     Rega's design philosophy extends further than ever before with advanced components built around our radical new plinth design. Featuring the brand new RB2000 tonearm, a ceramic flywheel effect platter and the custom RP10 power supply (allowing total control and accuracy over both motor vibration and speed performance) guarantee the highest level of performance from a Rega turntable to date.

    The Evolution of Revolution


    Evolution is a well proven and documented process in many areas of our lives. This applies in particular to design engineers and machines. Over the past forty years our cars have become more reliable and economical whilst we take for granted the reliability and speed of modern aircraft. Rega is no exception to evolution. Rega's experience and previous achievements allow us to continually develop and produce better products.


    The RP10 represents probably the biggest step forward in the evolution of Roy Gandy's turntable design philosophies. Low mass, high rigidity plinths combined with electronically controlled low vibration motors, high flywheel effect platters and lower mass higher stability tonearms.


    RP10 Custom power supply


    Housed in Rega's custom design case is a brand new advanced anti vibration and speed control circuit dedicated to running the 24v low noise motor. The speed and control of the motor is achieved by using a new DSP (digital signal processing) generator built upon a high stability crystal. The device will divide the accurate square wave from the crystal to the exact frequency required to turn the platter at the selected speed. The DSP core will also generate a near perfect sinusoidal waveform to power the motor. Factory set vibration and speed adjustments are then made to the power supply to tune the motor for optimal performance.


    The entire tonearm structure is designed to have the minimum of mechanical joints whilst using the stiffest materials in all critical areas. The tolerance of the RB2000 tonearm is so tight that no adhesive is used at any point throughout the construction. A brand new low mass, precision engineered, vertical bearing assembly has been manufactured to further compliment the inherent design philosophy of the RP10 turntable.


    The RB2000 uses the latest award winning Rega arm tube. Each one which is meticulously hand polished (keeping mass to an absolute minimum) and has been completely redesigned to redistribute mass and further reduce stresses and resonances. This advanced design tube increases the stiffness and rigidity of the overall assembly whilst reducing stress on the bearings even further.


    Magnesium and Phenolic - Dual bracing


    A super lightweight plinth combined with a double brace mounted specifically where the increased rigidity is required (between the tonearm mounting and the main hub bearing) forms a structurally sound "stressed beam" assembly. This design prevents energy absorption and unwanted resonances which will add un-natural distortions to the music. The RP10 takes our double brace technology to the next level. Not content with an unprecedented stiffness to mass ratio, Rega have obsessively reduced any resonant properties by using two different materials for the new stressed beam. The top layer is magnesium and the bottom layer is pheno-lic (two of the lightest and stiffest materials available). Incorporating two different materials into the brace structure lowers their ability to pick up unwanted airborne vibrations. Simply put, different materials have different natural resonances. By using two different materials together they decrease the natural frequency of each other by self damping.


    Super flywheel effect ceramic platter


    The RP10 uses a custom ceramic flywheel effect platter. The platter is produced from ceramic oxide powder which is compressed, fired and diamond cut to ensure perfect accuracy and flatness across the surface. The new platter features a modified construction over the previous P9 version with improved coupling to the sub platter.


    24V Low noise motor


    The motor is a high specification, 24V twin phase synchronous unit. It is controlled by Rega's unique and innovative RP10-PSU power supply. The motor drives the CNC machined pulley, sub platter and hub-bearing assembly via the twin belt drive. Each motor is individually hand tuned to its own custom power supply in the factory to minimise vibration, motor noise and ensure optimum performance.

    Controversially Rega has always researched methods of producing light but stiff and rigid plinths. The technology is simple: unwanted noise at microscopic levels is developed by the turntable motor and main bearing. The plinth can also pick up airborne vibration from the music. From the beginning in the 1970's Rega pioneered the use of a stressed skin structure for the plinth. This uses two layers of phenolic resin with a lightweight particle or fibre board sandwiched between the skins. This technique has been used in many applications where stiff, light structures are needed such as an aircraft wing or a Formula 1 chassis.


    The current increase in interest in turntables has allowed Rega to research and develop higher technology structures for the customer who is happy pay a little more for higher sound quality. The all new RP10 turntable utilises a unique new stressed skin structure produced from thin phenolic skins sandwiching a featherweight nitrogen expanded, closed cell, polyolefin foam core. This material has been developed exclusively for Rega over a three year period. The RP10 plinth is 7 times lighter than the weight of the original Planar 3 plinth. Rega has added even more stiffness in the crucial area between the arm and the main bearing.


    De-coupled outer frame and dust cover


    A common problem for many skeletal design turntables is the inability to incorporate an effective dust cover into the design. We have constructed an outer frame that minimises contact between the inner and outer plinth. The only points of contact are three location devices on the feet which centralises the inner and outer plinths perfectly. This makes set-up extremely easy and allows the use of a dust cover. The RP10 can be used without the outer frame if so desired.


    Turntable design & mythology


    Today there are many approaches to Hi-Fi design which follow established and informed engineering or electronic principles. Amplifier and loudspeaker design has been well documented over the years with excellent technical publications. These subjects have been based on tried and tested acoustic criteria and many computer software programs now exist that enable a near amateur to design a passable working loudspeaker based on known acoustic and mathematical parameters.


    Enter turntable design: When it comes to turntable design we are limited to a few poorly informed articles describing only very limited aspects of design. This is a subject full of mythology. Designers propose theories that counter the basic laws of physics, use terminology that doesn't actually exist in the engineering world, build products that are more like beautiful sculptures than acoustic reproduction machines and sell items costing tens of thousands of pounds that hardly function as intended and often fail to work at all.


    For instance a very common myth is "the heavier the better" concept. Turntable bases weighing tens of kilograms are not uncommon. The reality is that the base actually needs to be as light as possible to prevent unwanted bearing and motor noise being transferred to the turntable or record. Platters also fall under a similar myth with many platter designs becoming so heavy that it is impossible to design a correctly functioning bearing (and some so light that anyone can hear the speed inconsistency). The turntable platter itself needs to be of enough weight to spin at a constant speed within the confines of the chosen bearing and motor drive system.


    Many amateur designers in any field choose one component in a design and try to achieve an extreme in size, weight and quality. They believe that by taking one theory to its extreme the design will become "perfect". The reality of all engineering, design (and life) is that perfection is not possible. Based on this reality, Rega's goal has always been to optimise a mixture of numerous "correct compromises" thus bringing the designer nearer to the unachievable goal of perfection.

    Super flywheel effect ceramic platter


    The RP10 uses a custom ceramic flywheel effect platter. The platter is produced from ceramic oxide powder which is compressed, fired and diamond cut to ensure perfect accuracy and flatness across the surface. The new platter features a modified construction over the previous P9 version with improved coupling to the sub platter.


    24V Low noise motor


    The motor is a high specification, 24V twin phase synchronous unit. It is controlled by Rega's unique and innovative RP10-PSU power supply. The motor drives the CNC machined pulley, sub platter and hub-bearing assembly via the twin belt drive. Each motor is individually hand tuned to its own custom power supply in the factory to minimise vibration, motor noise and ensure optimum performance.


    Skeletal plinth design with polyolefin foam core


    Controversially Rega has always researched methods of producing light but stiff and rigid plinths. The technology is simple: unwanted noise at microscopic levels is developed by the turntable motor and main bearing. The plinth can also pick up airborne vibration from the music. From the beginning in the 1970's Rega pioneered the use of a stressed skin structure for the plinth. This uses two layers of phenolic resin with a lightweight particle or fibre board sandwiched between the skins. This technique has been used in many applications where stiff, light structures are needed such as an aircraft wing or a Formula 1 chassis.


    The current increase in interest in turntables has allowed Rega to research and develop higher technology structures for the customer who is happy pay a little more for higher sound quality. The all new RP10 turntable utilises a unique new stressed skin structure produced from thin phenolic skins sandwiching a featherweight nitrogen expanded, closed cell, polyolefin foam core. This material has been developed exclusively for Rega over a three year period. The RP10 plinth is 7 times lighter than the weight of the original Planar 3 plinth. Rega has added even more stiffness in the crucial area between the arm and the main bearing.


    De-coupled outer frame and dust cover


    A common problem for many skeletal design turntables is the inability to incorporate an effective dust cover into the design. We have constructed an outer frame that minimises contact between the inner and outer plinth. The only points of contact are three location devices on the feet which centralises the inner and outer plinths perfectly. This makes set-up extremely easy and allows the use of a dust cover. The RP10 can be used without the outer frame if so desired.


    Turntable design & mythology


    Today there are many approaches to Hi-Fi design which follow established and informed engineering or electronic principles. Amplifier and loudspeaker design has been well documented over the years with excellent technical publications. These subjects have been based on tried and tested acoustic criteria and many computer software programs now exist that enable a near amateur to design a passable working loudspeaker based on known acoustic and mathematical parameters.


    Enter turntable design: When it comes to turntable design we are limited to a few poorly informed articles describing only very limited aspects of design. This is a subject full of mythology. Designers propose theories that counter the basic laws of physics, use terminology that doesn't actually exist in the engineering world, build products that are more like beautiful sculptures than acoustic reproduction machines and sell items costing tens of thousands of pounds that hardly function as intended and often fail to work at all.


    For instance a very common myth is "the heavier the better" concept. Turntable bases weighing tens of kilograms are not uncommon. The reality is that the base actually needs to be as light as possible to prevent unwanted bearing and motor noise being transferred to the turntable or record. Platters also fall under a similar myth with many platter designs becoming so heavy that it is impossible to design a correctly functioning bearing (and some so light that anyone can hear the speed inconsistency). The turntable platter itself needs to be of enough weight to spin at a constant speed within the confines of the chosen bearing and motor drive system.


    Many amateur designers in any field choose one component in a design and try to achieve an extreme in size, weight and quality. They believe that by taking one theory to its extreme the design will become "perfect". The reality of all engineering, design (and life) is that perfection is not possible. Based on this reality, Rega's goal has always been to optimise a mixture of numerous "correct compromises" thus bringing the designer nearer to the unachievable goal of perfection.

    Every vinyl enthusiast has records in their collection, or come across LPs they'd love to own, but were just too warped for any cartridge/arm to track. The DF-2 the one-stop, one-button solution to your problems! The DF-2 provides controlled-heat perfect flattening for all your warped records, even those with only slight irregularities just enough to unsettle your cartridge and cause mistracking. Warps are bad news no matter how you look at it. If the arm/cartridge remains parallel to the LP's surface as with a flat record, VTA (Vertical Tracking Angle) remains unchanged throughout every rotation. Additionally, as the arm/cartridge tracks a warp on its upside, it places greater pressure on the stylus which changes VTF (Vertical Tracking Force) until the peak of the warp, whereupon the cartridge becomes "unloaded" with too little VTF on the way down. Of course, all this muddles the sound, changing the tonal quality, imaging and soundstage characteristics of the cartridge. A flat record also tracks better with less distortion. An LCD keeps you informed of progress with a tone sounding when done.

    The LS3.5 is iFi's 3.0 reboot of the classic BBS LS3/5A which is still now, half a century after its launch still in high demand and revered. iFi has taken the design back to its basic underpinnings and then re-engineered the LS3.5 ground-up for the 21st century. From designing the drivers (not OEM) to the cabinet terminals, where we were dissatisfied, we manufactured our own. This is the iFi level of attention to detail.


    The Retro LS3.5 is in many ways a synthesis of the best of the BBC LS3/5A and dash of the Le Petite. We eliminated their respective drawbacks using the very latest technological advancements available. So think of the iFi LS3/5A as BBC LS3/5a+Le Petite with an injection of factor X.


    iFi's brand-new tweeter that is smooth as silk, literally


    Silk is smooth, so why not make a tweeter from the ground-up using it at the core? The iFi 28mm tweeter is horn-loaded and uses a neodymium magnet. It is very much a 21st century product - that is, at the advanced edge of tweeter technology. The silk dome combines the lack of resonances at the top of the operating range (as found on metal domes) with excellent dynamics in band. The small neodymium magnet structure shifts cavity resonances outside the audible range. Being horn-loaded, it matches perfectly with the wideband driver to create a mammoth sound field.


    The tweeter is used only at the very top end of the audible range; the whole range from 59Hz - 8kHz covering the fundamentals of all instruments except those with very low bass notes and all the formants (the tone forming harmonics of instruments) is covered by the wideband driver, without any electrical or mechanical crossover.


    This avoids any damage to the phase/impulse response for this critical range. The simple arrangement of the crossover for the tweeter (first order at appx. 10kHz acoustic crossover) and the tweeters waveguide, which insets it for time-alignment with the wideband driver further preserves phase/impulse response.


    Ground-up paper cone wideband driver


    Natural material for a natural sound. The paper cone 115mm wideband driver by iFi performs more akin to a full-range driver.


    In many ways the wideband driver is very traditional, both magnet and basket. Stamped steel baskets can dissipate energy much faster than cast ones. It harks back to the "golden era" of driver design in the 1970's. Modern finite element modeling and modern materials have improved the driver in many areas (especially efficiency and bandwidth) over classics like the KEF B-110 which was originally used in the LS3/5A.


    The wideband driver rolls off after 8kHz. And it reaches down to 59Hz (with correct placement).


    Time-Aligned to perfection


    The iFi LS3.5 has a coherency that is based upon the simple fact from the outset, the tweeter and driver are perfectly time-aligned. Simply put, this means if one was looking at a cross-section of the LS3.5, the acoustic centre of the tweeter and the wideband driver as precisely vertically-aligned. This means sound waves from both units arrive at ear of the listener at the same time (as opposed to at different times). This is an oft overlooked weakness of many speakers, but not in the iFi LS3.5.

    There are two-chambers in one. The enclosure is maybe best considered a variant of multiple reflex, also, by breaking up the larger volume into two smaller different volume/size sections resonance frequencies are spread and tuned to higher frequencies, where the Amino-plastic open cell foam we use for damping has optimal absorption.


    The Acoustic Active Tuning with minimal damping drawn from the musical instrument manufacturing sector further assists with dissipating resonance frequencies higher - just think of the LS3.5 as a musical instrument.


    This is why the LS3.5 is a speaker that makes music.


    Bamboo is best


    Bamboo is a grass - hence it is a sustainable material and exceptionally environmentally friendly. It is 2x lighter and 3x stronger than wood. The aforementioned Voigt design coupled with the "stiff as steel" bamboo enclosure and the extra reinforcement by the division plus the acoustic tuning - all combined, makes for a remarkably low sonic signature of the box. This is critical as the use of the single paper driver needed for the wide bandwidth cannot be counted upon to block resonances from inside the box passing through the way a heavy and slower plastic cone is able to.


    Hence for environmental and sonic reasons, it made perfect sense to use it as a speaker cabinet material. The LS3.5 is 5x more costly to manufacture than standard MDF cabinets. A simple knuckle tap shows its complete lack of colouration - which is easily audible from the first note.


    Advanced Amino-plastic open cell foam


    For the very minimal internal damping duties, we scoured the world for the most advanced acoustic materials and settled on the Advanced Amino-plastic open cell foam material. The open-cell surface guarantees that sound waves are not reflected as an echo but can penetrate the cell structure unhindered. The sound energy is reduced in the cell structure, giving an excellent sound absorption capacity.


    From our listening tests the ability to ensure the deepest and cleanest bass along with a mid-range that is spell-binding placed it heads and shoulders above all others.


    Despite its much higher cost, we just had to have it in the LS3.5.


    Binding posts that carry the signal unhindered


    Leaving no stone unturned, we sourced a binding post that had the purest copper count, had the maximum surface area contact and had to be gold-plated for long-term enjoyment. Rest assured that even the banana speaker connectors we developed from the ground-up!


    The silver-plated copper speaker cables and the gold-plated copper speaker connectors means the sound quality is simply unbeatable and means the LS3/5A can play with the "big boys".
