    Hundreds of epic shows, memory lapses, unexplained injuries, one yearlong detour with Iggy Pop and multiple Grammy nominations later, Queens Of The Stone Age reemerge from the desert newly scarred and somehow strangely prettier with lucky seventh album, Villains, set for release on Matador Records.

    Produced by Mark Ronson and co-produced by Mark Rankin and mixed by Alan Moulder, Villains is the first full album offering from Queens Of The Stone Age since 2013's Like Clockwork gave the band its first #1 albumin the U.S. Like the stunning artwork of returning illustrator Boneface, the sonic signatures of the lineup that took Like Clockwork around the world and back are as unmistakable as ever, though coexisting with sufficient new twists to induce recurring double takes. As Homme himself puts it, The most important aspect of making this record was redefining our sound, asking and answering the question 'what do we sound like now?' If you can't make a great first record, you should just stop-but if you can make a great record but you keep making records and your sound doesn't evolve, you become a parody of that original sound.

    Born Villain is the eighth studio album from the always controversial artist Marilyn Manson, to be released in a joint venture between his own label Hell, etc. and Cooking Vinyl. Manson described the release as more romantic yet self-abusive and featuring a sound he dubs suicide death metal. All the Manson benchmarks are once again here including dark, sinister vocals, throbbing rhythms and heavy, thrashing guitars not to mention some punk rock fervor thrown in for good measure. Includes the rhythmic lead single No Reflection.


    The new record put simply has the ambition and determination of how I started making music in the first place, Manson says. It sounds like the first record in that it's not afraid to do anything. I had to remove myself from my lifestyle and start fresh. It doesn't really sound like any of my old records. In fact it sort of sounds like what I listened to before I made records; Killing Joke, Joy Division, Revolting Cocks, Bauhaus, Birthday Party. It's very rhythm-driven. I think this will probably be the grandest concept record of all.

    When it came to writing their sophomore album South America, Thieves And Villains decided to sculpt the album as if they were the only four people on earth to hear it. Looking for a new sense of direction, the band mentally escaped to a beautiful hiding place that they named South America. They found that this venture in their collective minds would allow them to be free, which in-turn, helped create music that excited them, and that they would ultimately fall in love with.


    However, the record was still being created under the same confines as many bands today; a spastic sinking ship of a country that has never been as stressed out, paranoid, or misled as it is right now, an America that is truly going "south." The result of this is the album title that came to represent the dichotomy of one location being the place you hate and love the most; the place you escape to, yet the place you despise.


    Thieves And Villains took the same indie-rock vibe as Vampire Weekend, combined it with the childlike sense of wonder found in an early Daneil Johnston song, and added the quirkiness implemented in the Pinkerton-era of Weezer. With the help of producer Tim Gilles, the band took an old approach and made it new again. In a world of over-produced and over-auto-tuned songs recorded take after take, they set out to bring music as a whole, back to its roots.


    "We recorded the entire album to analog tape on Mr. Gilles' vintage tape machines and used all our own gear and live tones. We didn't do takes of anything to death and approached every section with a real 'what you see is what you get' logic. What you're listening to is not the product of hours of tweaking, its the product of a few friends having fun and making music the old fashioned way."     On a front porch in Philadelphia in early 2004, Anand Wilder and Maxwell Kardon sat with a guitar and a
    banjo and busily finger picked to keep their hands from freezing.After a few false starts they settled on a dirge
    in d-minor and began improvising lyrics about a labor conflict in a Western Pennsylvania coal town that their
    fathers had learned about from an old folk song taught in Quaker schools in the '50s.


    The facts, as communicated,were a half-remembered pastiche of de facto segregation, frayed family ties, and
    double-dealing.The principal heroes and villains of the story were lost to history and buried in mine shafts and
    unmarked graves, and the particulars of the outcome were primarily recorded on newspapers lost in
    warehouse fires and floods. Nevertheless,the tragedy struck both as an ideal thread to weave through a series
    of stories they had been telling each other about a town full of unlucky,love lorn people. Inspired by the classic
    rock operas of the 1970's and the golden age of musical theater,they began work on their own


    Wilder and Kardon spent the next several years traveling, each writing and tinkering with songs about their
    town and sending each other hastily recorded demos and fragments of lyrics. The story of Greenbelt grew and
    the cast of characters, from robber barons to union men, migrant farmers to crooked ministers, became
    fleshed out. They enlisted friends from myriad bands: Austin Fisher (Suckers), Haley Dekle (the Dirty
    Projectors), Ira Wolf Tuton and Christopher Keating (Yeasayer), Ryan Kattner (Man Man), Britt Myers
    (Chairlift), and Aku Orraca-Tetteh (Dragons of Zynth) to sing the parts of the town's luckless citizens.


    In 2008, they put together a core band featuring Ira on bass and Christopher Powell of Man Man on drums
    and began arranging the songs of Break Line for a full ensemble. With the help of recording wunderkind Britt
    Myers (Chairlift, Yeasayer, Passing Strange) they finally began putting the music down onto tape,staying up
    late experimenting with sounds and arrangements.


    In the years that followed,the two found moments whenever they could to complete the project. Neither can
    believe that what started with just the two of them huddled on a cold porch would grow to involve a once-in-a-lifetime cast of collaborators. A decade after its conception, they are proud to present to the public their
    vision of a classic story of betrayal, pride and lost love.

    With the full participation of original Beach Boys Al Jardine, Mike Love, and Brian Wilson, Capitol/EMI has, for the first time, collected and compiled the bands legendary 1966-67 sessions for the never-completed SMiLE album.


    In numerous sessions between the spring of 1966 and the summer of 1967, The Beach Boys recorded a bounty of songs and drafts for an album, SMiLE, that was intended to follow the band's 1966 masterpiece, Pet Sounds. The master tapes were ultimately shelved, and The Beach Boys' SMiLE has never been released. Drawn from the original masters, The SMiLE Sessions presents an in-depth overview of The Beach Boys' recording sessions for the enigmatic album, which has achieved legendary, mythical status for music fans around the world.


    This expanded, boxed edition of The SMiLE Sessions features the main SMiLE album tracks, plus four CDs of additional audio from the legendary sessions, a double vinyl LP set, and two 7 vinyl singles. The deluxe box also contains a 60-page hardbound book with rare and previously unseen photos and memorabilia from The Beach Boys archive and newly-written essays by Beach Boys Al Jardine, Mike Love, Brian Wilson, and Bruce Johnston, as well as by Beach Boys historian and author Domenic Priore and many other inner-circle participants.


    Produced by Brian Wilson, Mark Linett, Alan Boyd and Dennis Wolfe in Los Angeles The SMiLE Sessions box set includes an assembled collection of core session tracks. It also delves much deeper into the sessions, adding early song drafts, alternate takes, instrumental and vocals-only mixes, and studio chatter. The SMiLE Sessions invites the listener into the studio to experience the album's creation, with producer, singer and bassist Brian Wilson's vision leading the way as he guides his fellow Beach Boys, singer Mike Love, drummer Dennis Wilson, lead guitarist Carl Wilson, rhythm guitarist Al Jardine, and newest member Bruce Johnston (who'd replaced Brian Wilson in the touring group during 1965), through the legendary sessions.


    Artwork for all of The SMiLE Sessions has been created with and inspired by Beat-Pop artist Frank Holmes original 1967 LP sleeve art and booklet designs intended for the SMiLE album. With its three-dimensional shadowbox lid, The SMiLE Sessions box set offers a whimsical peek inside the storied SMiLE Shop.


    When Capitol/EMI and The Beach Boys first announced plans for The SMiLE Sessions 2011 release, the news spread rapidly. Pitchfork reported, The Beach Boys SMiLE is quite possibly the most storied album in rock history, Billboard proclaimed the upcoming release an event that pop music fans have been waiting for since the Summer of Love, and The Washington Post called SMiLE the most legendary unreleased album of all time.


    The best efforts have been taken by The Beach Boys, the producers, and Capitol/EMI to present the SMiLE album sessions most vital and fascinating elements. However, there will no doubt be some debate amongst Beach Boys fans around the world who, during the past four decades, have become familiar with a variety of widely-traded bootlegged bits and pieces from the sessions. As recently explained by the Detroit Metro Times, No album, released or not, has generated a more personal relationship with its audience, since no two people can ever agree on its content and purpose.


    Beginning with Good Vibrations, The Beach Boys best-selling record in a long string of hits, Brian Wilson had begun to construct songs in a modular form, crafting individual sections that would later be edited together to form a coherent whole. In several intense bursts of creative energy, Wilson, drawing on the talents of the finest studio musicians in Los Angeles and utilizing the best studio facilities available on any given day, laid down dozens of musical fragments, all designed to fit together in any number of possible combinations. No one had done this before in pop music, and his next endeavor would be an album-length version of this unique and luxurious songwriting parlance: SMiLE.


    In 1965, Brian Wilson met an up-and-coming session keyboard player and songwriter, Van Dyke Parks. Noticing Parks' conversational eloquence, Wilson felt that he could help to volley The Beach Boys songwriting into the wave of broader-messaged and socially-conscious rock 'n' roll that would come to define the '60s. They were soon collaborating on keynote songs for SMiLE, including Heroes And Villains, the bands follow-up single to Good Vibrations. Wilson and Parks would also co-write Surf's Up, Vega-Tables, Cabin Essence, Do You Like Worms, Wonderful, Wind Chimes, and other pieces of the SMiLE tapestry. Parks also introduced Frank Holmes to create album sleeve art and a booklet interpreting the albums James Joyce-mode lyrics.


    The reason SMiLE did not see a release in 1967 had more to do with back room business that obscured the creative side of the program than anything else. In late 1966, The Beach Boys formed Brother Records, initially to produce outside artists. Soon, however, The Beach Boys would become embroiled in a court action with Capitol Records with the goal to become the top-selling artists on their self-owned, independent label. The group withheld Heroes And Villains and announced they would instead release Vega-Tables recorded with the bands own money in April of '67 on Brother Records. By July of 1967, Capitol Records and The Beach Boys had come to terms, with Capitol agreeing to distribute the bands Brother Records, and it was agreed that SMiLE was no longer to be the bands next album.

    With the full participation of original Beach Boys Al Jardine, Mike Love, and Brian Wilson, Capitol/EMI has, for the first time, collected and compiled the bands legendary 1966-67 sessions for the never-completed SMiLE album.


    In numerous sessions between the spring of 1966 and the summer of 1967, The Beach Boys recorded a bounty of songs and drafts for an album, SMiLE, that was intended to follow the band's 1966 masterpiece, Pet Sounds. The master tapes were ultimately shelved, and The Beach Boys' SMiLE has never been released. Drawn from the original masters, The SMiLE Sessions presents an in-depth overview of The Beach Boys' recording sessions for the enigmatic album, which has achieved legendary, mythical status for music fans around the world.


    The SMiLE Sessions double vinyl LP features an approximation of what was intended to be the completed SMiLE album, compiled from The Beach Boys original session masters. Additional session highlights and bonus tracks are also included, including demos and stereo mixes.


    Produced by Brian Wilson, Mark Linett, Alan Boyd and Dennis Wolfe in Los Angeles The SMiLE Sessions 2LP Set includes an assembled collection of core session tracks. The SMiLE Sessions invites the listener into the studio to experience the album's creation, with producer, singer and bassist Brian Wilson's vision leading the way as he guides his fellow Beach Boys, singer Mike Love, drummer Dennis Wilson, lead guitarist Carl Wilson, rhythm guitarist Al Jardine, and newest member Bruce Johnston (who'd replaced Brian Wilson in the touring group during 1965), through the legendary sessions.


    Artwork for The SMiLE Sessions has been created with and inspired by Beat-Pop artist Frank Holmes original 1967 LP sleeve art and booklet designs intended for the SMiLE album.


    When Capitol/EMI and The Beach Boys first announced plans for The SMiLE Sessions 2011 release, the news spread rapidly. Pitchfork reported, The Beach Boys SMiLE is quite possibly the most storied album in rock history, Billboard proclaimed the upcoming release an event that pop music fans have been waiting for since the Summer of Love, and The Washington Post called SMiLE the most legendary unreleased album of all time.


    The best efforts have been taken by The Beach Boys, the producers, and Capitol/EMI to present the SMiLE album sessions most vital and fascinating elements. However, there will no doubt be some debate amongst Beach Boys fans around the world who, during the past four decades, have become familiar with a variety of widely-traded bootlegged bits and pieces from the sessions. As recently explained by the Detroit Metro Times, No album, released or not, has generated a more personal relationship with its audience, since no two people can ever agree on its content and purpose.


    Beginning with Good Vibrations, The Beach Boys best-selling record in a long string of hits, Brian Wilson had begun to construct songs in a modular form, crafting individual sections that would later be edited together to form a coherent whole. In several intense bursts of creative energy, Wilson, drawing on the talents of the finest studio musicians in Los Angeles and utilizing the best studio facilities available on any given day, laid down dozens of musical fragments, all designed to fit together in any number of possible combinations. No one had done this before in pop music, and his next endeavor would be an album-length version of this unique and luxurious songwriting parlance: SMiLE.


    In 1965, Brian Wilson met an up-and-coming session keyboard player and songwriter, Van Dyke Parks. Noticing Parks' conversational eloquence, Wilson felt that he could help to volley The Beach Boys songwriting into the wave of broader-messaged and socially-conscious rock 'n' roll that would come to define the '60s. They were soon collaborating on keynote songs for SMiLE, including Heroes And Villains, the bands follow-up single to Good Vibrations. Wilson and Parks would also co-write Surf's Up, Vega-Tables, Cabin Essence, Do You Like Worms, Wonderful, Wind Chimes, and other pieces of the SMiLE tapestry. Parks also introduced Frank Holmes to create album sleeve art and a booklet interpreting the albums James Joyce-mode lyrics.


    The reason SMiLE did not see a release in 1967 had more to do with back room business that obscured the creative side of the program than anything else. In late 1966, The Beach Boys formed Brother Records, initially to produce outside artists. Soon, however, The Beach Boys would become embroiled in a court action with Capitol Records with the goal to become the top-selling artists on their self-owned, independent label. The group withheld Heroes And Villains and announced they would instead release Vega-Tables recorded with the bands own money in April of '67 on Brother Records. By July of 1967, Capitol Records and The Beach Boys had come to terms, with Capitol agreeing to distribute the bands Brother Records, and it was agreed that SMiLE was no longer to be the bands next album.

    For the early part of the Beach Boys' career, all of their singles were mixed and mastered and released only in the mono format - they didn't release a single in stereo until 1968. In those days, hits were made on AM radio in mono. And the mono of those times worked well for Brian Wilson - famed co-founder, songwriter and arranger - who suffers from partial deafness. In fact, for their first 13 albums, Wilson originally turned in all the final mixed Beach Boy albums to Capitol Records only in mono. The mono mixes were where Wilson paid intense attention, and the dedication paid off!


    We've taken 10 of the most classic, best-sounding Beach Boy titles ever and restored them to their mono glory!

    First mixed and released in stereo for the first time in 2012. These stereo mixes were created using the first generation basic tracking session multitracks, synced with the overdubs that were later added on second and third generation masters, to create the first true stereo mixes. The exception is Good Vibrations, which is a computer-generated stereo mix by Derry Fitzgerald. A remix in stereo wasn't possible because the original multi-track tape has never been located. The stereo mixes for Today!, Summer Days (And Summer Nights!!), Beach Boys' Party! and Smiley Smile were produced and mixed by Mark Linett, and co-produced by Alan Boyd.

    This Is Another Life

    Case Studies is the musical project of Jesse Lortz, a prolific Seattle based
    musician. His lyrics wax and wane with truth and bare tales from his life.
    Melodies surface as lines hummed in the in-between times. These easy
    melodies coat the heavy subject matter of suicide, heartbreak, grief and
    regret. As with his previous project, The Dutchess and the Duke, listening to Case Studies feels like taking part in an exploration of sentimental
    landscapes. They appear and fade like dark light lingering on the horizon.
    The meandering verse journeys to seek comfort in loneliness and vulnerability. Through the twisted subconscious, dawn breaks, breathing its
    light on both the joyous and dismal occasions that mark life's milestones,
    each song a continuation of his story, each song a probing examination of
    motivation and consequences.


    This Is Another Life is Lortz's second full-length solo release on Sacred
    Bones. It is the follow-up album to 2011's highly acclaimed The World is
    Just a Shape to Fill the Night. This is Another Life features guest vocals by
    Marissa Nadler on "Villain" and has the same producer and engineer,
    Greg Ashley of the band Gris Gris, as the last album. Ashley also plays
    percussion, organ and adds additional vocals & guitar. Lortz is also helped
    out by Jon Parker (guitar / piano), Oscar Michel (bass), Joe Haener (percussion), Carey Lamprecht (violin) and Shawn Alpay (cello).

    Necessary brattiness is the motto for Speedy Ortiz's dauntless new collection of songs, Twerp Verse. The follow-up to 2015's Foil Deer, the band's latest indie rock missive is prompted by a tidal wave of voices, no longer silent on the hurt they've endured from society's margins. But like many of these truth-tellers, songwriter, guitarist and singer Sadie Dupuis scales the careful line between what she calls being outrageous and practical in order to be heard at all.


    You need to employ a self-preservational sense of humor to speak truth in an increasingly baffling world, says Dupuis. I call it a 'twerp verse' when a musician guests on a track and says something totally outlandish - like a Lil Wayne verse - but it becomes the most crucial part. This record is our own twerp verse, for those instances when you desperately need to stand up and show your teeth."


    Twerp Verse was tracked in Brooklyn DIY space Silent Barn, mixed by Omaha legend Mike Mogis (Bright Eyes, Rilo Kiley) and mastered by Grammy-nominated engineer Emily Lazar (Sia, Haim, Beck). The record pulls from the most elastic pop moments in Squeeze's Argybargy and the seesawing synth-rock of Deerhoof and the Rentals. With Dupuis on guitars, vocals, and synths, supporting guitarist Andy Molholt (of psych-pop outfit Laser Background) now joins Speedy veterans Darl Ferm on bass and Mike Falcone on drums - and together they accelerate the band's idiosyncrasy through the wilderness of Dupuis' heady reflections on sex, lies and audiotape.


    Dupuis, who both earned an MFA in poetry and taught at UMass Amherst, propels the band's brain-teasing melodies with her serpentine wit. Inspired by the cutting observations of Eve Babitz, Aline Crumb's biting memoirs, and the acute humor of AstroPoet Dorothea Lasky, Dupuis craftily navigates the danger zone that is building intimacy and political allyship in 2018. Now as public pushback against the old guards reaches a fever pitch - in the White House, Hollywood and beyond - the band fires shots in disillusioned Gen Y theme Lucky 88, and casts a side-eye towards suitors-turned-monsters in the cold-blooded single Villain. Closing track You Hate The Title is a slinky traipse through the banality of this current moment in patriarchy - in which survivors are given the mic, but nitpicked over the timbre of their testimonies. You hate the title, but you're digging the song, Dupuis sings wryly, You like it in theory, but it's rubbing you wrong. Tuned smartly to the political opacity of the present, Twerp Verse rings clear as a bell.

Distinguished by dual magnesium-burn guitars, leather-tough percussion, molten-hot melodies, and the unmistakable piercing falsetto of operatic vocalist, Screaming for Vengeance became the soundtrack to millions of music lovers' lives in the early 1980s as Judas Priest continued to lay waste to its contemporaries' softer, cheesier hard-rock styles. An effort on which precision-based speed, mainstream accessibility, and resilient attitude meet in triangular equilibrium, the 1982 set remains the British metal legends' top-selling record.


    Mastered on Mobile Fidelity's world-renowned mastering system and pressed at RTI, this Silver Series numbered limited edition LP shows off the grand intersection of daring adventure and commercial purpose achieved via ironclad production values and entrenched grooves. The latter particularly benefit from this analog pressing, as the group never overlooks the importance of rhythm and pace even when stoking tempos to engine-combusting levels. Leagues ahead of the sonics gracing its peers' albums from the time, the sense of balance, separation, and realism is on par with that of big-budget rock creations.


    Staked by the breakout "You've Got Another Thing Comin'," which burns white-hot with foot-pounding riffs, prize-fighting percussion, and singer Rob Halford's gun-for-hire blare, Screaming for Vengeance clutches hold of the jugular and doesn't let go. A return to the band's gritty, purist roots, the record revisits the themes of darkness, menace, and the unknown firmly established on the pioneering Stained Class and Killing Machine. Along with those albums, and British Steel, Screaming for Vengeance is the template for the catchy albeit uncompromisingly heavy crossover success Metallica, Megadeth, and Anthrax enjoyed years later.


    With the one-two opening tandem of the instrumental "The Hellion" and stomping "Electric Eye," overseen by Halford as if he's embodying the persona of a wicked James Bond villain, Priest sounds utterly futuristic and terrifying, the instruments seemingly on a swivel and the sawed-off tones flooding the guitar solos with intimidation. A classic head-out-to-the highway anthem ("Riding on the Wind"), a racing proto-thrash banger ("Screaming for Vengeance"), and a scorching exorcism ("Devil's Child") function as the metal-hued bolts that hold the foundations of this Top 20-charting benchmark in place.


    Perhaps more so here than on any other record, Priest spit-shines hooks and collusive six-string harmonic leads to perfection, giving listeners ying-yang doses of pain and pleasure, sweet and bitter. Songs at once invite sing-a-longs and fist-pumping responses. Screaming for Vengeance marked the last time Priest would sound this heavy in the 80s. No wonder it was voted the 12th best metal album of all time in Martin Popoff's definitive book of the same name.

    Any band that has earned an army of devout followers through dropping seven killer full-lengths - and touring their collective ass off for sixteen years - could perhaps be forgiven for thinking they could take it easy as they wade into their eighth release. But that's just not The Black Dahlia Murder's style, and Nightbringers is testament to that. Having released their most accomplished, aggressive, and emotionally diverse music to date in the form of 2015's Abysmal, the Michigan quintet have once more pushed themselves to new heights, and the 34 minutes of searing melodic death metal that comprises Nightbringers is riveting listening. "I always feel a responsibility to the people who support this band when we start making a new record," asserts vocalist Trevor Strnad. "The pressure that comes from people being excited to hear what you come up with next can be intimidating, but it's so exciting that those people love you so much for just doing what you do. It makes you want to honor what you've done in the past, but also excite them with where you go next, and that definitely drove us on Nightbringers. When we started writing I honestly didn't know we had this album in us, and I feel really proud of it. It's a great moment for us."


    Rather than meticulously plan things out or stick rigidly to any kind of template, when it comes to writing The Black Dahlia Murder prefer to let things happen organically. In the hands of guitarist Brian Eschbach - who co-founded the band with Strnad in 2001 - and new recruit Brandon Ellis (Cannabis Corpse/ex-Arsis) Nightbringers is rich with dynamic riffs that are at once fresh and classic TBDM, resulting in a collection that shifts through many moods and effortlessly incorporates various elements of extreme metal. With guitarist Ryan Knight having amicably stepped down in 2016, the addition of twenty-four-year-old Ellis to the band's ranks has helped usher in an exciting new era. "He's very professional for his age, I think he's skilled far beyond his years, and his live energy is exceptional. When Max (Lavelle, bass) joined the band he challenged a lot of us on stage to raise our personal bar, and Brandon's pushed that even further," states Strnad. "Brandon coming into the band and writing a bunch of songs was an awesome surprise too. He really took the reins, and this record is also the most involved that Alan (Cassidy drums) has been too. The way that we were doing the demos and bouncing things back and forth he had a lot of room to do what he wanted to do, and I think it's definitely a more colorful album for that. I also think as we get older the emotional content goes up. I think we better realize how to grip the listener. Personally, I try to write lyrics that are going to match each part, and kind of ramp up those feelings that we're putting across." Strnad's statements are vividly borne out by every moment of Nightbringers. For fans attending 2017's Summer Slaughter tour, the first taste of of the record came with the inclusion of the title track in their set, which has an undeniable immediacy to it, rich with hooks and boasting a "circusy, evil and playful" air. By contrast, "Catacomb Hecatomb" is suffused with tragedy, the mournful tone of its slower passages deeply affecting. This too is dramatically different to "As Good As Dead", which has some swagger to it that Strnad likens to Megadeth, or "Matriarch", described by Eschbach as a "wild, neoclassical romp" and stands as one of the most cutthroat and all out aggressive tracks in the quintet's arsenal. Upon first hearing the latter, Strnad was intent on matching its visceral intensity. "I felt inspired to write very violent lyrics to it. It's told from the perspective of a woman who is trying to have a child and not having any luck, and she goes kind of crazy and stalks this other woman who is due to have a child. She finds her moment to take it from her, cutting it right out of her stomach." While Strnad explores a variety of themes and ideas with his lyrics, they are united by the album's title, which embraces a tenet that has been central to The Black Dahlia Murder's output since the very beginning. "A lot of archaic ideas that are still upheld - such as marriage and monogamy - came from Christianity, whether people want to acknowledge it or not, and to me, death metal has always been bucking that. It's 'being-the-villain music', because we're the enemy of Christianity, the enemy of all that is good and traditional. Death metal is for free thinkers, it's for showing people the path to inner strength and operating on your own will, instead of being told what to do and living in fear, and songs like the title track and "Kings Of The Nightworld" are about leading a legion of awakened minds into battle." Following this theme also motivated Strnad to forge into ever-darker territory, even when this meant tearing things up and starting over. "I felt I needed to rise to the occasion to make as much of the blood and guts and heinousness as possible, and there was actually a couple of points where I rewrote some songs. I just didn't feel like they were dark enough, or violent enough, so I was really trying to ramp up the monstrous aspects of things, and definitely trying in different ways to take down tradition."


    Rather than decamp to a single studio, the members split off when it came time to start laying down the songs - all well versed in how to get the best out of their individual performances. With former bassist Ryan Williams once again assisting, the drums were tracked at The Pipe Yard in Plymouth, Michigan and rhythm guitars in the band's practice space in Warren, Michigan [was bass tracked there too?]. Ellis then recorded his many blistering solos in his home studio, while Strnad headed to Full Force Studios on Long Island, with Joe Cincotta (Suffocation, Internal Bleeding) overseeing his sessions. For the unique and haunting cover art they turned to Kristian Wåhlin, aka Necrolord, who has designed seminal artwork for the likes of At The Gates, Bathory, Emperor and also TBDM's 2007 release, Nocturnal. "I think he's the most prominent artist when it comes to classic releases in the melodic death metal genre, and kind of bringing things full circle with it being the ten-year anniversary of Nocturnal felt right. By now people probably wouldn't have expected us to go back to him, so it's kind of a surprise, but at the same time it's a very classic cover too." With the band celebrating the 10-year anniversary of the aforementioned album by playing it in its entirety on Summer Slaughter, it has given them a moment to reflect not only on the road that has led them to here but also that which lies ahead. "When I think back to when we started the band I feel very proud of everything we've done, and I also see a lot of improvement over the years," says Strnad. "In the early songs I can hear us as kids, and then segueing into our adulthood as musicians and writers, but sixteen years in I still feel young as a band. I feel like we have a shit ton left to do, and I think we're sitting pretty with the best lineup we've ever had. I also think Nightbringers could be our finest hour yet. I feel very strongly that it will affect people, I want to get all of these songs in people's ears, and I want them to check out everything we've got on this record. There's so much variety and so many great ideas, and I think that this could take us to another place."
