The Vinyl Conflict (Box Set) (Awaiting Repress)

Included Are Reproductions Of The Original Lp Artwork, Including Inner Sleeve Art, All In Heavyweight, Litho-wrapped Chip Jackets

The Vinyl Conflict collects all 10 original Slayer albums from American Recordings and puts them together in this limited edition box set. Each album has been remastered from the original flat master tapes and is pressed on the highest quality 180-gram audiophile vinyl.

Slayer is an American thrash metal band from Huntington Park, California, formed in 1981 by guitarists Jeff Hanneman and Kerry King. Slayer rose to fame with its 1986 release Reign in Blood, and is credited as one of the big four thrash metal bands, along with Metallica, Megadeth, and Anthrax. Between 1991 and 2013, the band sold 4.9 million albums in the United States.

Slayer's musical style involves fast tremolo picking, double bass drumming, riffs in irregular scales and shouted vocals. In the original line-up, King, Hanneman, and lead vocalist/bassist Tom Araya contributed to the band's lyrics, and most of the band's music was written by King and Hanneman, with additional help from Araya and drummer Dave Lombardo. The band's lyrics and album art, which cover topics such as serial killers, necrophilia, Satanism, religion, anti-religion, Nazism, and warfare, have generated album bans, delays, lawsuits, and criticism from religious groups and the public. However, its music has been highly influential, often being cited by many bands as an influence musically, visually, and lyrically.

    In Conflict

We are pleased to announce the new album from Owen Pallett, In Conflict, to be released
on May 13th in North America. In Conflict was written and produced by Pallett, recorded
with the core rhythm section of Robbie Gordon and Matt Smith, and features contributions
from Brian Eno and The Czech FILMharmonic Orchestra, amongst others.

In Conflict is full of love songs- more specifically, songs about liminal states and our loved
ones locked in battle with them. "The record is meant to approach 'insanity' in a positive
way," Owen says- emphasis on the ironizing scare quotes around singular notions of
insanity. "Depression, addiction, gender trouble, and the creative state are presented as
positive, loveable, empathetic ways of being. Not preferable, per se, but all as equal, valid
positions that we experience, which makeus human."

Pallett was recently nominated for an Academy Award for Best Original Score, alongside
Arcade Fire, for their work on Spike Jonze's Her. Pallett has served as a versatile
collaborator to many projects in both pop and art establishments - The National, The
Mountain Goats, Grizzly Bear, Snow Patrol, and yes even, Taylor Swift - where he is
equally beloved for his accessibility; for the way his art reflects & resonates with Mainstream
Pop Culture; for the emotionally cathartic outlet his music provides.

Some Time In New York City

Released in 1972, it is John Lennon's third post-Beatles solo album, fifth with Yoko Ono, and third with producer Phil Spector. This album found the Lennon's in an explicitly political phase; understandable as Lennon was neck-deep in his struggle to remain in the United States, a conflict rooted in his antiwar and anti establishment politics and the enmity of the Nixon administration.

    A Raw Youth

The focus of the album is the recurring conflict between minorities (the raw youths) and society: The oppressor and the oppressed. Each song is a different story of a youth from a different era. Some of them want to die because their faith in humanity has ended, some want to fight the authority, think outside themselves. 'Sold Less Than Gold' reflects the story of women who are sold into marriages or into sex slavery and how resilient their spirits are. Despite the different time periods, history repeats itself. There will always be conflict and sadly, despite the rebels in our history, there are people that are zombified. A Raw Youth is an awakened collective consciousness of wanting to live and not fear death.

    Forever In The End

Hailing from Portland, OR, Atriarch features members of Graves At Sea, Trees, Final Conflict and Get Hustle. Vocalist Lenny Smith describes his Cascadian deathrock ensemble as a living entity comprised of four parts, offering catharsis through sonic ritual. Formed in 2009, Atriarch sought out to combine elements of goth and deathrock while making sure to keep it heavy. Their debut full-length for Seventh Rule Records, Forever the End, does just that and then some.

    La Resa Dei Conti (Discontinued)

Ennio Morricone delivered more of the same dramatic conflict on his score for the 1968 Western 'La Resa Dei Conti', this time mixing in a bit of atmospheric formlessness among his more romantic and orchestral sounds. There's some vampiric-sounding organs as well as one of those ascending, judgement day tunes that's expected of a Western: the strings come into play and the choir gets heavy with the tension.

    Room Temperature

Recorded in the winter of 1992 in Nebraska, with two microphones and a cassette four-track recorder. Despite being his second full-length, this was Joyner's first fully realized album, the one that first caught the interest of British DJ John Peel, who played it so often, he single-handedly created a European audience for the Midwest singer-songwriter. Populated with sometimes harrowing and desperate stories of the complex workings of the human heart (in conflict with itself), the stark record features Joyner solo on all tracks. This marks the influential album's first appearance on vinyl.

    The Twain Shall Meet

Mastered From The Original MGM Records Reels

Burdon and the group returned in April 1968 with The Twain Shall Meet, continuing their psychedelic journey. "Monterey" chronicled the previous summer's seminal festival while "Sky Pilot" reflected the growing anti-war sentiment as the Vietnam Conflict escalated. Steeped in a dense, layered sound full of electric guitars, sitars, strings, brass and washes of phased vocals, the album served notice that Burdon and company were totally in-step with America's youth movement. From blues revivalists to cultural torchbearers in four short years? Believe it!

    Elwan (Awaiting Repress)

For the last five years, Tinariwen have been busy criss-crossing the globe bringing their
triumpant tours to all five continents and expanding their audience. During this time their
beloved homeland in the Adrar des Ifoghas, a Saharan mountain range that straddles the
border between north-eastern Mali and southern Algeria has, in effect, been transformed
into a conflict zone, a place where nobody can venture without putting themselves in danger.
These conflicts have forced the band into exile to record their 8th album, Elwan.

Elwan means 'the elephants ' - an animal metaphor to describe those 'beasts', whether
militias or multinational consortiums, who have trampled everything in their path: in the
desert, where both the human and ecological equilibriums are extremely fragile.
Tinariwen chose to record this album is several locations around the world, including for 4
days at the desert hideaway of Rancho De La Luna studio in Joshua Tree, CA, the studio
known as a favored refuge for many an eclectic artist from Queens of the Stone Age to
Daniel Lanios to Arctic Monkeys to Iggy Pop and more. For Tinariwen, the geographical
location of the studio proved to be particularly propitious in terms of creativity. And the
human climate was just as favorable.

A few friends dropped in during the sessions to add some magic to a few tracks including,
Kurt Vile (electric guitar), Mark Lanegan ( Vocals on 'Nànnuflày'), Matt Sweeney (electric
guitar) and producer/guitarist, Alain Johannes (Cigarbox guitar). Sessions were also
recorded in Morocco, where the band were accompanied by local musicians, in a land
where they are considered musical legends.

Lovers of those sensual yet abrasive riffs that are Tinariwen's signature won't be disappointed.
But neither will those who love their funky, danceable side, which comes through
loud and clear. All that potential has been wonderfully honed by the album's mixing engineer
Andrew Schepps, known well for his work with the Red Hot Chilli Peppers, Johnny
    Cash, and Jay Z.

Based on the graphic novel of the same name, M*A*S*H from 1970 is one of the most commercially and critically successful films in television history. After the release of the film a spinoff series was released and gained as much as success.

The film displays the setting of the 4077th MASH, located just three miles from the front line in Uijeongbu, where the doctors and nurses perform meatball surgery and otherwise do what they can to patch up the physical (and, occasionally, psychological) wounds of the conflict's casualties while staving off their own fear, stress, boredom and fatigue by fair means or foul.

Johnny Mandel's work on the soundtrack largely involved arranging period tunes and effect music (especially military and football-related themes), although he also wrote a memorable main title theme.

Song from M*A*S*H (Suicide Is Painless) is written by Johnny Mandel (music) and Mike Altman (lyrics), which was the theme song for both the movie and TV series M*A*S*H. Mike Altman is the son of the original film's director, Robert Altman, and was 14 years old when he wrote the song's lyrics.

Several instrumental versions of the song were used as the theme for the TV series. It became a number one hit in the UK Singles Chart in May 1980. The song was ranked #66 on AFI's 100 Years...100 Songs.

Wonder Woman is a 2017 American superhero film based on the DC Comics character of the same name. After Man of Steel, Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice and Suicide Squad, it is the fourth installment in the DC Extended Universe.

Before she was Wonder Woman she was Diana, Princess of the Amazons, trained warrior. When a pilot crashes and tells of conflict in the outside world, she leaves home to fight a war to end all wars, discovering her full powers and true destiny.

Rupert Gregson-Williams, a member of Hans Zimmer's Remote Control Productions team of composers, wrote and composed the film's music. He was joined by Tom Howe, Paul Mounsey and Andrew Kawczynski who provided additional music.

Australian singer Sia wrote a song for the film, titled To Be Human, featuring English musician Labyrinth, which is also featured on the soundtrack.

    Untogether

Blue Hawaii decided to make Untogether in 2012; they began recording on New Years Day in Vancouver and intermittently worked on the project until summer broke in Montreal. The music followed their winter in Canada, it became colder, more introspective. It again captured a time and place, but instead of a dense saturation of love and excitement, this record reflects the vast world of self-awareness and delicacy. It takes for its subject the question of belonging, despite overwhelming space.

Musically, the production on the album is more spacious and physically it was recorded in separation. Despite this, it belongs together in its final form. It demonstrates successful creative process in a pair who composed apart, and in doing so it is a meditation on communication: how technology and art influence modern human relationships. It contains the vast space of two years passing, including watching their Montreal scene change as some launched into international success and others turned deeper inwards. Here, the album finds the conflict of separation/belonging to one's self and community.

The duo notice that throughout the changing social and personal landscape which is one's twenties, these divided notions and people somehow stay together. Even the name Blue Hawaii suggests a kind of melancholic, jaded paradise, but a paradise afterall. It is because - or perhaps in spite of - these disjointed intersections that the record is called Untogether.

    Divisionary

Having spent much of the last two years in willful isolation, Ages and Ages surface at last with Divisionary, an emotive and emotional song cycle that sees the Portland, Oregon-based collective wrestling with many of the contradictions and confusion that life has to offer. Pervasive acclaim and a fervent fanbase followed 2011's debut, Alright You Restless, but the band soon found themselves confronting what co-founder/frontman Tim Perry refers to as "some dark-ass shit."

Ages and Ages tackled those challenges by amping up their multi-layered modus operandi - all gang harmonies, rhythmic discovery, and inner conflict - the contrast between joyous sound and disheartening subject matter instilling songs such as "No Pressure" and "Our Demons" with striking pragmatism and undeniable muscle. Fraught with heartfelt drama, celebratory spirit, and sonic ingenuity, Divisionary finds Ages and Ages torn and frayed but more optimistic than ever, empowered and transcendent in spite of their turmoil and trials.

    Fitz And The Tantrums

Fitz and The Tantrums' natural exuberance permeates their new self-titled album, which celebrates walking to the beat of your own drum.

Lead singer, Michael Fitzpatrick, says of the new record, We've always tried to push ourselves at every turn. For our third album, we continued to challenge ourselves, taking care not to write the same record again.

Turn It Up, Fitz exhorts at the top of album opener and first single HandClap. The horn-and-beats fueled track captures the exhilarating sense of promise - and danger - that a night out and a new romance hold. The staccato Complicated paints a relationship that's packed with both chemistry and conflict and bursts into an unexpected cheer. Echo and otherworldly keyboards make Tricky an intoxicating dance-floor anthem and a warning to any future lover, while A Place For Us, the album closer, encapsulates the band's belief that there is a place in the world for each of us to belong, regardless of our differences.

Overall, this is an album about desire - the desire for intimacy, for sex, for acceptance on your own terms and the struggle not to compromise, explains Fitz.

Fitz and The Tantrums was recorded in the band's hometown of Los Angeles. Jesse Shatkin (Sia, Matt & Kim) produced eight of the album's eleven tracks. Fitz produced Fadeback while Joel Little (Lorde) produced Do What You Want and Ricky Reed (Jessie J) helmed HandClap.

    The Beautiful & The Damned

'The Beautiful and Damned' album and short film paints a very dire portrait of Gerald/G-Eazy that is very real and has never been shared by him before.

Originally Gerald saw limitations in his life so he created G-Eazy as a way to make it past those and live how he thought he wanted to live and become that rockstar he thought he wanted to be. The problematic pattern that has come from the rise of this star is that G-Eazy lives a constant dark clichÉ of addiction and over indulgence in his favorite vices that surround him each night in the lifestyle in which he's found himself. Heavy handed in reference to F. Scott Fitzgerald's novel of the same name, 'The Beautiful and Damned' shows us hung-over Gerald left having to clean up reckless G's aftermath on a daily basis.

The dueling narrative he conveys is as desperate, humble, and confessional as it is brazen, celebratory, and loud in its own hubris. He is in the middle of a very serious conflict with his alter ego and he has genuine concern as well as thoughts about how to get back to who he is as person.

This album and film is about the duality of these two characters who wrestle inside of him, and the beginning of that communication and process on how to preserve his true self.

On the back of his monstrous first single, "No Limit" featuring A$AP Rocky and Cardi B from his forthcoming album The Beautiful & Damned, the Bay Area's own multi-platinum rapper and producer G-Eazy has announced the highly personal 20-track double-album will be out on vinyl via RCA Records.

Special guests on the album include a cast of heavy-hitters featuring Halsey, Cardi B, A$AP Rocky, Kehlani, E-40, Charlie Puth, Anna of The North, and more.

    Birds

Seth Glier's new album Birds is steeped in conflict and contradictions. There's grief and loss, but also strength and resilience; doubt and dismay, but also a sense of optimism as Glier confronts heavy topics and wrestles them into the daylight.

Glier (pronounced Gleer) recorded Birds in an airy loft in western Massachusetts outfitted with a grand piano and floor-to-ceiling windows. Birds roost just outside those windows, on the roof of the converted mill building where he lives, and they became his sympathetic audience while Glier made the album. I felt a tremendous amount of comfort talking to the Birds, he says I'd check in with them regularly to see how they thought things were going so far.

Birds is Glier's fifth album, and the latest entry in a burgeoning career that has included a Grammy nomination and a pair of Independent Music Awards while touring with artists including Ani DiFranco and Ryan Adams.

The songs on Birds range from personal to political, and are bound together by the awareness that our world is a fragile place that is all the more magical for it. Glier makes that point on a large scale with Water on Fire, a terse, grinding tune that opens with a cynical reworking of a Ray Charles lyric as Glier uses fracking to dig into the false equivalence between freedom and capitalism. Hasn't Hit Me Yet has a more visceral, intimate approach: the soulful slow jam, full of warm guitars and multi-tracked vocals, is about the death of Glier's autistic brother.

Together, those songs represent the opposite poles of Birds. I was really trying to explore connections on this record, Glier says. Among those connections is the one between race and the criminal justice system on Justice for All, a raw chain-gang stomp that sounds almost like an old field recording. Like I Do takes a more oblique tack, drawing out feelings of anger through the use of noisy synthesizers and fuzzed-out bass pads.

The songs on Birds reflect a scope of sound and style: the title track is lush and & orchestral, for example, while Too Much Water pairs Glier's voice and piano with subtle accompaniment from horns, for a classic, elegant feel that calls to mind Harry Nilsson in the early '70s. People Like Us is jaunty and up-tempo, while the trebly guitar arpeggios and moaning saxophone on Just Because I Can sound like a sock-hop slow dance, until you zero in on lyrics delivered by a narrator who dynamites his domestic bliss simply for the power trip. Conflict. Contradiction.

Even the cover tune, a reimagined version of Buffalo Springfield's For What It's Worth, evokes urgency. Although it was written 50 years ago, it's still about what's happening right now, Glier says.

Birds began taking shape after Glier lost his brother, Jamie, who died in October 2015, and inspired a TED Talk performance that Glier gave in 2016. My brother passing away was a huge component of where I was and what I was looking for, Glier says. In particular, I was looking for meanings, wanting his life to mean more than just being over.

For a long time afterward, Glier passed the time by writing songs and inspecting each melody with the feathered fellows by his windowsill. Instead of recording the album in a Los Angeles studio, as he did on his 2015 album If I Could Change One Thing, he decided to make Birds at home.

I thought that I should just stay close to the windows here, Glier says. I think this sort of happened by accident, but by the time I started recording the record, it was fall in New England, which is a profoundly beautiful death. The air is full of honesty, the sky is full of geese, and there is bright gorgeousness woven into the dying of things. It all seeped into the textures of this record.

    Say Yes To Love

These punk kids from the mean streets of Syracuse, New York, deliver high-energy
slabs of mayhem-friendly post punk noise, a wall of guitar and Casio. Meredith
Graves knows how to run her mosh pit like a dictator runs a birthday party." - Rolling
    Stone

"In just four short songs, Perfect Pussy has spoken more truths than many artists with
20-year-spanning discographies, and with news of a debut full-length in the works,
now is probably a good time to start bracing yourselves. It might get a little uncomfortable, but trust me, the shake-up is worth it." - Complex

"One of the boldest new rock bands." - Pitchfork

Since releasing their 4 song demo cassette I Have Lost All Desire for Feeling
in late 2013, Perfect Pussy have taken the music world by storm. Their harsh
yet refreshing lyrics paired with the assaulting vocals of singer Meredith
Graves drew in audiences from all crowds. While often muffled by the wall
of sound built buy the guitar, bass, drums and synth, it is the brutal truths of
Graves' lyrics and the power of her live delivery that has had everyone
from Rolling Stone to Pitchfork to The New York Times praising the power of
    this rising band.

With Say Yes to Love Perfect Pussy have begun to hone their sound while
retaining the rough around the edges noise that first drew listeners in. The first
track, "Driver", grabs the listener and drags them into the chaotic world of
this brief but powerful album. The songs kick and punch but it is the dense,
honest lyrics that will make the listener feel the most. Filled with conflict and
confidence and despair and desire, these are songs that stay with the
listener long after the album has ended.

    Break Line: The Musical

    Limited To 2000

On a front porch in Philadelphia in early 2004, Anand Wilder and Maxwell Kardon sat with a guitar and a
banjo and busily finger picked to keep their hands from freezing. After a few false starts they settled on a dirge
in d-minor and began improvising lyrics about a labor conflict in a Western Pennsylvania coal town that their
fathers had learned about from an old folk song taught in Quaker schools in the '50s.

The facts, as communicated, were a half-remembered pastiche of de facto segregation, frayed family ties, and
double-dealing.The principal heroes and villains of the story were lost to history and buried in mine shafts and
unmarked graves, and the particulars of the outcome were primarily recorded on newspapers lost in
warehouse fires and floods. Nevertheless, the tragedy struck both as an ideal thread to weave through a series
of stories they had been telling each other about a town full of unlucky, love lorn people. Inspired by the classic
rock operas of the 1970's and the golden age of musical theater, they began work on their own

Wilder and Kardon spent the next several years traveling, each writing and tinkering with songs about their
town and sending each other hastily recorded demos and fragments of lyrics. The story of Greenbelt grew and
the cast of characters, from robber barons to union men, migrant farmers to crooked ministers, became
fleshed out. They enlisted friends from myriad bands: Austin Fisher (Suckers), Haley Dekle (the Dirty
Projectors), Ira Wolf Tuton and Christopher Keating (Yeasayer), Ryan Kattner (Man Man), Britt Myers
(Chairlift), and Aku Orraca-Tetteh (Dragons of Zynth) to sing the parts of the town's luckless citizens.

In 2008, they put together a core band featuring Ira on bass and Christopher Powell of Man Man on drums
and began arranging the songs of Break Line for a full ensemble. With the help of recording wunderkind Britt
Myers (Chairlift, Yeasayer, Passing Strange) they finally began putting the music down onto tape, staying up
late experimenting with sounds and arrangements.

In the years that followed, the two found moments whenever they could to complete the project. Neither can
believe that what started with just the two of them huddled on a cold porch would grow to involve a once-in-a-lifetime cast of collaborators. A decade after its conception, they are proud to present to the public their
vision of a classic story of betrayal, pride and lost love.

    Welcome to Greenbelt.

    Shakara

Shakara is one of a clutch of early 1970s albums - also among them this box's Fela's London Scene and Afrodisiac - on which Fela's Afrobeat transitioned from foetal stage to something approaching full-grown form. Shakara (1971) includes three of mature Afrobeat's signature ingredients. There are two guitarists, rhythm guitarist Tutu Shoronmu and tenor guitarist Segun Edo. The pair's repetitive, interlocking riffs - part melody, part rhythm - play a similar role to the rhythm and mi-solo guitars used in contemporary Congolese rumba. Fela's Broken English lyrics extend his music's audience beyond Yoruba speakers and make his words understandable across Anglophone Africa. And female backing vocalists echo Fela's lead vocals in what was to become Afrobeat's trademark call-and-response pattern. On release, Shakara's B-side, "Lady," was jumped on by the Nigerian press as Fela's contribution to a "war between the sexes." "I want tell you about lady-o," Fela sang. "She go want take cigar before anybody, she go want make you open the door for am, she go want the man wash plate for her for kitchen, she want sit down for table before anybody." By contrast: "Africa woman, she know the man na master, she go cook for him, she go do anything for him .But lady no be so, lady na master." "Lady," like 1975's "Mattress," has been interpreted by some as "anti-women." It was certainly in conflict with European feminist thought. However the lyric is interpreted, Fela was arguing from the particular in order to highlight the general: the adoption of European social habits to the detriment of African culture. Fela would address African men in similar fashion in "Gentleman" in 1973, lampooning their adoption of European suits, shoes and ties - which caused them to "smell like shit" in the African heat - before returning to the women in 1976 in "Yellow Fever," a song about the fashion for skin whitening creams. "Shakara" is a mainly instrumental track, with a brief lyric, sung in Yoruba, warning against boasters and braggarts. Up-tempo, with a suitably turbulent horn arrangement, it includes strong solos from Fela on keyboards and the fearsome Igo Chico on tenor saxophone.

The Beatles is the ninth official album by the English rock group The Beatles, a double album released in 1968. It is also commonly known as The White Album as it has no graphics or text other than the band's name embossed on its plain white sleeve.

The album was written and recorded during a period of turmoil for the group, after visiting the Maharishi Mahesh Yogi in India and having a particularly productive songwriting session in early 1968. Returning to the studio, the group recorded from May to October 1968, only to have conflict and dissent drive the group members apart. Ringo Starr quit the band for a brief time, leaving Paul McCartney to play drums on two tracks. Many of the songs were solo recordings, or at least by less than the full group, as each individual member began to explore his own talent.

Upon release in November 1968, the album received largely positive reviews and reached number 1 on the charts in the United Kingdom and the United States. The album is notable for the eclectic nature of its songs, which has divided critics in evaluating its legacy. The album has sold over 30 million copies worldwide and was listed at number 10 on Rolling Stone's 500 Greatest Albums of All Time list.

A team consisting of some of the best producers and engineers in the recording industry were brought together and would spend 4 long years mixing and mastering with some of the most state of the art recording equipment. Treating these records much like a science experiment, engineers ran extensive tests before copying the analog master tapes over into a digital format using 24-bit/192 kHz resolution, and carefully removing clicks, vocal pops and poor edits. Never altering the original songs themselves, just polishing them up a bit.

Free-For-All is the second solo release from guitarist Ted Nugent and his first album to go platinum. As the recording of Free-For-All commenced, rhythm guitarist and lead vocalist Derek St. Holmes left the band, citing growing personal and creative conflicts with Nugent. Two solid years of living together on the road had taken its toll on the relationship. Additionally, St. Holmes was unhappy with Tom Werman's production, saying that the producer was watering down the band's sound. A full year before Bat Out of Hell brought him international success, vocalist Meat Loaf was brought in by producer Werman to sing on the album. Meat Loaf was paid the sum of $1000 for his contributions to the album, which included crafting all of the vocal arrangements and two days of recording sessions.

    Welcome (Speakers Corner)

Many of Santana's rock-addict fans could well have understood the inviting word Welcome on the white LP cover as an attempt to break away from the spiritual aura of his previous album Love Devotion Surrender. And the musicians certainly managed to produce a rich Latin feeling, with such titles as Samba De Sausalito and Yours Is The Light. But luckily their concessions did not alienate them from their die-hard fans in that they came up with a sort of copy of the rhythmical Caravanserai. They truly attempted something new. Encouraged by the success of the jazz-fusion formula created by Miles Davis and his disciples, Santana combined his virtuoso guitar playing with specially chosen electronic features. The amazingly acrobatic jazz vocalists Leon Thomas and Wendy Haas contributed complicated, quirky parts and the maestro himself vies with John McLaughlin in a dense conflict carried out on their instruments in Flame Sky. This is an album with a strong intellectual drive and offers the discerning listener a dazzling blend of Latin, jazz and fusion.

    About Speakers Corner

At the beginning of the 90s, in the early days of audiophile vinyl re-releases, the situation was fairly straightforward. Companies such as DCC, Mobile Fidelity, Classic Records and, of course, Speakers Corner all maintained a mutual, unwritten ethical code: we would only use analogue tapes to manufacture records.

During the course of the present vinyl hype, many others have jumped on the bandwagon in the hope of securing a corner of the market. Very often they are not so ethical and use every imaginable source to master from: CDs, LPs, digital files, MP3s - or employed existant tools from the 80s and 90s for manufacturing.

A digital delay is gladly used when cutting a lacquer disc because tape machines with an analogue delay have become quite rare and are therefore expensive. When cutting the lacquer, the audio signal is delayed by one LP revolution against the signal, which controls the cutter head, and for this a digital delay is very often employed. Of course, the resultant sound signal is completely digital and thus only as good as this delay.

We should like to emphasise that Speakers Corner Records on principle only uses the original master tape as the basis for the entirely analogue cutting of lacquer discs. In addition, the pressing tool is newly manufactured as a matter of principle. We have one digital recording in our catalogue (Alan Parsons / Eye In The Sky"), but even in this particular case we used the analogue tapes for cutting.

We only employ existing tools for manufacturing if an improved result is not forthcoming, e.g. the title Elvis Is Back, which was mastered by Steve Hoffman and Kevin Gray, or several titles from our Philips Classics series, which in any case Willem Makkee cut from the original masters at the Emil Berliner Studios in the 90s. It goes without saying that we only used the mother and that new tools were made for our production.

To put it in a nutshell: we can ensure you that our releases are free from any kind of digital effects - excluding the exception above - and that the lacquer discs are newly cut.

Prokofiev: Symphony No. 5 (Speakers Corner)

Prokofiev's Symphony No. 5 is one of just a handful of traditional Russian works that have advanced to become a celebrated repertoire piece in the area of conflict between socialist artistic realism and conservative modernism. Although, in contrast to his colleague Shostakovich, Prokofiev toed the party line and was highly privileged, which made it very difficult to believe his later claim that his art was free of politics, his music has touched the hearts of concertgoers all over the world.

In the present recording, the cosmopolitan Leonard Bernstein and the New York Philharmonic present the whole beauty of the melodies that unfold in the first movement with full orchestral radiance. Cheerfulness as a »hymn to free and happy Man« is given voice in the clarinet theme of the burlesque second movement with its imaginative changes. Reminiscences of the Symphonie classique appear to be intentional. In the finale, Prokofiev proves himself to be a confident master of the classical-romantic canon form, which uses the theme of the first movement and new motifs to create far more than just a melodious apotheosis. Jagged, sharp and percussive final bars round off this supreme orchestral firework, which makes great demands on every single musician.sound of America.
