    City Of Refuge

In her relatively short musical career, Abigail Washburn has covered a lot of ground; both physically and metaphorically. Bouncing between China and Appalachia has informed much of her musical output and influenced a body of work that goes far beyond the usual claw hammer banjo repertoire.

Her Rounder debut, City of Refuge is a sublime marriage of old-time and indie-pop. On the album Washburn pairs venerable folk elements with far-flung sounds, and the results feel both strangely familiar and unlike anything anybody's ever heard before. The album features My Morning Jacket's Car Broemel, The Decemberists' Chris Funk, Turtle Island Quartet's Jeremy Kittell, atmospheric jazz guitarist Bill Frisell, veteran Nashville studio percussionist Kenny Malone, Old Crow Medicine Show's Ketch Secor and Morgan Jahnig, Wu Fei, master of the guzheng, and the Mongolian stringband Hanggai, who managed to contribute ambient throat-singing from halfway around the world.

The album was produced by Tucker Martine (The Decemberists, Tift Merritt, Mudhoney) and features the talents of multi-instrumentalist, singer/songwriter, Kai Welch (Tommy and the Whale). City of Refuge offers an expansive palette of supple and modern textures resulting in a remarkably harmonious piece of art.

    Sabougla Voices

In today's frenetically paced world, uncovering a lost treasure is often met with great enthusiasm, excitement, and anticipation. Lost footage of Gene Kelly dancing. A Vincent van Gogh no one knew existed. An Arthur Crudup album lost in a vault for 40 years. Jimi Hendrix material coming to light after 40 years. Well, now we can also celebrate the "discovery" of a blues master stepping into the sunlight, and delivering the best gospel album since Elvis gave us "How Great Thou Art" in February, 1967. The paradox is that Leo Welch has been there all along, living in Sabougla, Mississippi, first playing blues, and then moving to gospel. Born in 1932, Welch grew up playing blues. As his style of blues became less popular, he began to play gospel because churches offered more opportunities to play. Consequently, he was overlooked because blues aficionados frequented juke joints. Most blues lovers would never think to find blues, or blues related music in a church.

After an off-the-cuff call by Welch to Big Legal Mess Records, things continued to fall into place, and he was able to record his debut album, Sabougla Voices. It is really difficult to accurately describe this stunning album, and faithfully convey the vibe, the atmosphere, and way it moves a listener. Welch has poured a lifetime of learning, living, loving, playing, and praying into this work, and it shows!

This album is stripped down, bare bones joyful gospel being played and sung from the heart. This is not your daddy's gospel though. Sabougla Voices is a shot of love to your heart, a cool cleansing breeze blowing through your soul, and an orgasm for your ears. The album opens with "Praise His Name," which is beautifully sparse, raw, and has a great bouncing beat. "You Can't Hurry God" is almost a gospel honky-tonk that has a juke joint vibe. "Take Care Of Me Lord" has a very early Magic Slim and The Teardrops sound to it. "Mother Loves Her Children" is really basic, slow, artfully delicate blues. "Somebody Touched Me" has a mid 1960s Rolling Stones blues flavor, and nice backing vocals. "A Long Journey" is delightfully slow, and begs to be pulled over you like a comforting blanket of blues. "His Holy Name" is gospel as a shuffle, and definitely has the church rocking! The album closes with "The Lord Will Make A Way," an acoustic performance that is slow and stark, but very moving.

If this is Welch's debut alum, we can't wait for the follow-up! This album is definitely a must-have.

    Gatefold Sleeve

First reissue for this ultra-rare prog/rock LP from 1971 which was only ever released in Italy.

Blue Beard managed just one album and it seems likely that it was a studio project, roping in disparate, available musicians to record songs written in the main by Thurman Binkley and Robert Welch, both of whom also produced the set. Recording in Milan, Blue Beard comprised an Indonesian, Luis Noll (electric bass), a Dutchman, Hank Meerbeek (drums), an Irishman, John Irvine (lead electric guitar), an Indian, Errol Dyer (organ), and an Australian, Little Sammy Gaha (acoustic guitar). Judging by the photos on the rear cover, Binkley and Welch chipped in on keyboards and guitar respectively.

Blue Beard is best known for the single Sly Willy, which was released in 1971 across Europe, and is now sought after as a prime slice of funky rock. Its flipside, Country Man, is a pleasing, mellow affair. Copies of the single, in its various picture sleeves, change hands for between £20 and £40. The album itself only surfaced in Italy and is now a scarce item, commanding three figures. Highlights include the rococo pop of Baby I Need You, the heavily-strummed, gruffly-sung God Save The World (reminiscent of Cat Stevens) and the up-tempo proggy rock of Losing You, penned by John Irvine.

Nothing further is known of Blue Beard and its musicians, but Thurman Binkley appears to have contributed to the 1975 film La grande blonde avec une petite chatte noire (that's assuming there's only one Thurman Binkley out there), while Bob Welch was a member of the by now US-based Fleetwood Mac from the summer of 1971 through to 1975, a stalwart through one of their rockiest phases. Welch next formed trio Paris, before embarking on a successful solo career.

    The Paradigm Shift

On 'Paradigm Shift', Korn chose not to repeat the dub step/rock fusion of their previous album The Path of Totality, but remained intent on keeping the sounds fresh and new. On the new album, they promise to mesh the classic dual guitar attack of James 'Munky' Shaffer and Brian 'Head' Welch (returning for the first time since the band's 2003 album Take A Look In The Mirror), with an all new approach to the integration of electronics.

    Quarters

If for some, the debut album can be a weight on strained shoulders compared to off the cuff single tracks and relatively short, sharp bursts of creativity experienced during an artist's fledgling beginnings, then Berlin-based British producer James Welch aka Seams seems to carry his own first full-length easily.

'Quarters' is a record that flows with a lucid fluidity, taking on a more overtly beat-driven stance than previous EPs Tourist and Sleeper (put together last year for a double-release,) but retaining a lightness of touch that allows the material to lift up and outwards from its scuttling rhythms.

    Poor David's Almanack

Guitar man David Rawlings leaves the Machine moniker behind for his third album, Poor David's Almanack, a wry mixture of acoustic and electric performances rich in ageless American vernacular. Gloriously captured on analog tape by studio wizards Ken Scott and Matt Andrews, the ten new songs took shape in a rollicking weeklong session at Woodland Sound Studios in Nashville, Tennessee where Rawlings and longtime compatriot Gillian Welch joined together with Willie Watson, Paul Kowert, Brittany Haas, Ketch Secor, and Taylor and Griffin Goldsmith to produce an album for all seasons.

    The King Is Dead

The King Is Dead is a mostly-acoustic set of 10 concise, Americana-based songs, that marks a deliberate turn towards simplicity after the Decemberists wildly ambitious and acclaimed 2009 song-cycle The Hazards Of Love. Produced once again by Tucker Martine, The King Is Dead features special guest appearances by Americana luminary Gillian Welch and legendary R.E.M. guitarist Peter Buck.

The King Is Dead showcases the ways in which The Decemberists; Colin Meloy, Chris Funk, Jenny Conlee, Nate Query, and John Moen, sound just as glorious in simple, stripped-down compositions as they do on the elaborate structures that have defined their work for years. The album was recorded in a converted barn at Pendarvis Farm, an 80 acre estate of lush meadows, forest, and Mt. Hood views outside of Portland, and it was the concept of the barn, as recording space and as attitude, that informed the making of the album.

    Sing Elliott Smith

The title is about as self-explanatory as could be: 'Seth Avett & Jessica Lea
Mayfield sing Elliott Smith.' 12 songs originally written by the acclaimed and wellloved
Smith, performed by 2 artists, currently known for their contributions to the
indie folk rock landscape. The recordings are, in many cases, defined by bare
instrumentation, driven by a simple yet bold vocal delivery, the depth of feeling
    complimenting that of the subject matter. This album is an obvious labor of love;
a comment based on the genuine reverence which Avett and Mayfield clearly
hold for Smith. At times, the songs feel light as a feather, while in others, thematically
leaden with heartache, they are given a deep breath, a different dimension,
a new color. In modern fashion, melodies intensely whispered by Elliott Smith
are sung in a harmonious way, akin to the folk aesthetic of Gillian Welch and

Features Four Complete Albums: Then Play On, Kiln House, Future Games, And Bare Trees

Contains An Exclusive Replica Of The Original 1969 7 Single: "Oh Well - Pt. 1" b/w "Oh Well - Pt. 2."

FLEETWOOD MAC: 1969-1972 is a beautiful vinyl boxed set that collects four of the band's classic albums, each lovingly reproduced on 140-gram vinyl. As a bonus, the set comes with an exclusive replica of the original 1969 7-inch single of "Oh Well - Pt. 1" b/w "Oh Well - Pt. 2."

FLEETWOOD MAC: 1969-1972 features four complete albums - Then Play On (1969), Kiln House (1970), Future Games (1971) and Bare Trees (1972) - housed in a striking black slipcase. To ensure superb sound quality, Chris Bellman at Bernie Grundman Mastering cut the lacquers for all four albums. The records look as good as they sound thanks to authentically reproduced packages, including gatefolds for Then Play On and Kiln House and single sleeves for Future Games and Bare Trees.

The set follows the band through an early transitional period. With Kiln House, Fleetwood Mac began moving toward a more melodic pop sound on songs like "Mission Bell" and "One Together." At the time, the band included: Jeremy Spencer (guitar, vocals, piano), Kirwan (guitar, vocals), John McVie (bass) and Mick Fleetwood (drums). Christine McVie was at the recording sessions and contributed backing vocals and the album's cover art, but she did not join the band until shortly after the album was finished.

The band's shift toward pop and folk styles continued on Future Games with songs like "Show Me A Smile" and "Morning Rain." This marks the first Fleetwood Mac album with Christine McVie as a full band member as well as the Mac debut of Bob Welch on guitar.

The line-up stayed the same for Bare Trees, which boasts a consistently strong collection of songs like McVie's "Spare Me A Little Of Your Love," Kirwan's "Dust" and Welch's "Sentimental Lady." Although Kirwan was a dominant figure during the recording, penning half of the songs, this would ultimately be his last appearance on a Fleetwood Mac album.

    Dreams

Dreams is a reissue of Chris Forsyth's second solo album. In 2009 Forsyth pressed up 100 LPs for a European tour and created quite an uproar of approval by the heads who managed to score a copy. Now available again, Dreams rightfully shows Forsyth at the creme of American guitarists who blend masterful skill of country/blues with sometimes violent aggression or mind-bending arrangements.

Dreams was recorded and mixed between 2007 and 2009 and catches Forsyth in the studio layering acoustic and electric guitars and organ with contributions from his guests, creating four pieces which are full of the raw power and intuitive delicacy that characterizes his live shows still. Dreams crosses free-wheeling minimalist rock balladry and anarcho- improv surrealism with a fearless approach to beauty in a deeply psychedelic landscape. It features contributions from his Peeesseye bandmates Jaime Fennelly (synth on one track) and Fritz Welch (drums and vocals on another) as well as the soaring trumpet work of Nate Wooley and organ, saxophone, and snare drum overdubs by another longtime collaborator of Forsyth's in Phantom Limb & Bison, Shawn Edward Hansen. This is Forsyth's second solo record, preceding Paranoid Cat, which was released by Family Vineyard earlier in 2011.

    Heartbreaker (Awaiting Repress)

With a touch of Robyn Hitchcock in his vocal timbre, a smidgen of Steve Earle in his narratives and instrumental writing, and a heap of Gram Parsons in the fullness of his overall sound and structure, Ryan Adams steps well above Whiskeytown with Heartbreaker, his solo debut. By turns raucous, wistful, raspy, and simply sweet, Adams makes the most of a top-shelf acoustic band, including Gillian Welch and David Rawlings and even a guest spot from Emmylou Harris on the tenderly yearning Oh My Sweet Caroline. There's little dependence on the usual alt-country twang and a far more rounded sense of textures here (the multiple vocal tracks on Amy, for example, sound Beatles-esque), with glockenspiel, organ, and more signaling a sonic field of extensive depth. His spare guitar and stretched-thin vocal delivery alternate smartly with a bigger-shouldered guitar and throaty voice, never leaving behind a band conception straight out of Parsons's oeuvre. Adams signals occupancy of the post-alt-country vanguard--if there is such a thing. --Andy Bartlett

    Sara Watkins

Sara Watkins self-titled debut, eagerly anticipated by the significant fan base shes built after nearly two decades as fiddle player and vocalist for Grammy Award-winning trio Nickel Creek, boasts an easygoing virtuosity. The youthful Watkins, who joined Nickel Creek when she was barely in her teens, displays formidable skill as a multi- instrumentalist, playing the guitar and ukelele as well as the fiddle, and is just as versatile, and breathtakingly mature, as a singer. Watkins incorporates folk, country, gospel, and pop into her 14-song set, produced by former Led Zeppelin bassist John Paul Jones and recorded in Los Angeles and Nashville. Shes joined by a wide range of old friends and longtime heroes, including alt-country duo Gillian Welch and Dave Rawlings, Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers keyboardist Benmont Tench, and Elvis Costello drummer Pete Thomas; colleagues from the bluegrass world like Tim OBrien, Punch Brothers Chris Eldridge, Ronnie McCoury, and Rayna Gellert; and Nickel Creek band-mates Chris Thile and Sean Watkins.

Watkins mixes eight of her own songs with tunes by such artists as John Hartford, Tom Waits, and Davíd Garza. Her self-penned fiddle numbers are exuberant, foot-stomping instrumentals, while the songs for which she wrote both music and lyrics have a heart-meltingly lovelorn quality. Watkins knows how to channel in her own work the plaintive emotions of classic country and timeless pop. Theres honesty and empathy on tracks like the sweetly soulful My Friend, the brooding Bygones, and rueful album closer, Where Will You Be. She proves to be as astute as Emmylou Harris or Linda Ronstadt in her choice of covers, segueing gracefully from the aforementioned Waits, Garza and Hartford to the lighthearted country-and-western swing of Jimmie Rodgerss Any Old Time, to the world-weariness and spiritual yearning of Norman Blakes Lord Wont You Help Me, to the romantic wistfulness of Jon Brions Same Mistakes.

Take A Look In The Mirror is the sixth studio album by American Nu-Metal band Korn, released in 2003. It is the first album self-produced by the band. Korn explained that they wanted fans to hear the music as it should be. They returned to a more aggressive sound as featured on their earlier albums, with guitarists Brian Head Welch and James Munky Shaffer mostly utilizing thick, heavy distortion and the occasional clean tones for contrast. The album peaked at number 9 of the Billboard 200 album charts and was certified platinum.

The track Did My Time was previously released as a single for the movie Lara Croft Tomb Raider: The Cradle of Life. The single debuted and peaked at number thirty-eight on the Billboard Hot 100, becoming Korn's first top-forty hit in the United States. Did My Time gave Korn another Grammy nomination in the Best Metal Performance category. The track Right Now was accompanied by a provocative cartoon video animated by Spike and Mike.

The album also contains a reworked and re-recorded version of the track Alive, which had previously only been released on the band's first demo, Neidermeyer's Mind. The track Play Me features rapper Nas, making Take A Look In The Mirror the first Korn album since Follow The Leader to feature such a collaboration. Jonathan Davis plays bagpipes on Let's Do This Now, marking the return of a tradition that has previous to the album, only been absent on Untouchables.

The Music On Vinyl reissue is pressed on 180 gram audiophile vinyl, with the first 2000 copies being individually numbered and pressed on silver transparent vinyl.

    Passerby

In a world where instant gratification is the norm, patience has become
a rare commodity. But for Zoë Randell and Steve Hassett, who make up
indie-folk duo Luluc (pronounced Loo-LUKE), letting things unfold in
due time not only defines their career trajectory, it also works as a pretty
good description of their approach to making music. Music that Sub
Pop co-founder Jonathan Poneman describes as bracing, subtle, tender
    and magnificent.

So while it may seem like Randell and Hassett's history is littered with
all kinds of good luck-from their initial meeting to their relationship
with The National's Aaron Dessner to opening slots with artists like
Lucinda Williams, Fleet Foxes, and JosÉ Gonzàlez; to their deal with Sub
Pop; to grabbing the attention of Nick Drake's producer-being in the
right place at the right time isn't just about fate. It's about knowing when
something feels right and having the confidence that people will respond
    when they're ready.

There's no question that everything these Australians (who split their
time between Melbourne and their adopted hometown of Brooklyn) have
done in their lives has been leading up to this summer's Passerby, their
second album overall and first available worldwide. Passerby is a gorgeously
crafted 10-track album full of beautiful, slow-burning melodies and
delicate harmonies, which drip out of their mouths like honey. The
attention to detail is unmistakable, and highlights like "Reverie On
Norfolk Street" and "Early Night" are as haunting as they are hummable.
Unadorned guitars and voices make up the bulk of the dreamy sound,
though the power of the added instrumentation can't be overstated, with
well-placed piano, percussion, double bass, sax, trumpet, trombone,
and more adding color to the cosmopolitan atmosphere. Band favorites
like Simon and Garfunkel and Gillian Welch (and, of course, Nick Drake)
can be felt throughout Passerby, while the poignant restraint aligns them
    well with labelmates Low.

Co-produced by the band and Dessner, Passerby shows off all of Luluc's
best qualities, retaining the gentle beauty of the duo's debut while adding
textures built with a cadre of impressive players. It's the trophy celebrating
Luluc's airtight case that good things-no, make that great things-really
do come to those who wait. The wait is over. The world is ready to hear
    Luluc quiet and clear.

    The Sacred Heart Sessions

The Lowest Pair features the duel banjo picking of Kendl Winter and
Palmer T. Lee. Draped in Kendl's high lonesome harmonies and Palmer's
Midwest croon, their debut release, 36¢, (Team Love Records) was
hailed by many outlets and American Songwriter praised their earnest,
earthy songcraft. Team Love will release their
sophomore album, The Sacred Heart Sessions.

Arkansas-born and now homesteading in Olympia, Washington, Kendl
Winter sprouts alfalfa beans in mason jars in the back of the tour van and
spreads her songs across the country Johnny Appleseed style. Kendl
brings to The Lowest Pair her wonderfully weaving poetry of song, old
and new, and a voice somewhere between Gillian Welch and Iris DeMent
with a little Olympia twist. Palmer T. Lee who hails from Minneapolis was
nineteen years old when he inherited a couple of banjos and discovered
he could reassemble them into his dream instrument. Former front man
for the much loved high energy bluegrass band The Boys n' the
Barrels, Palmer's songs are distilled into the warm sweet sounds of his
percussive wordplay and the melodic interludes of his own unique style
played on a pieced together banjo.

After nearly a year of traveling the country playing clubs, hotels, house
shows, back yards and street corners, they found their way back up to
Minnesota, this time to Duluth where they sat down to record the followup
to 36¢.   Linking up with Tom Fabjance at an old church seemed like
the perfect way to expand on their sound without diluting their original
magical formula. The Sacred Heart Sessions is an album that allows the
listening to enter the space that surrounds its creation. One can virtually
feel the walls and vaulted ceiling of the old wooden church rising up,
creating a natural reverb and warming the air.

Be it Kendl's punk roots, her admiration for the traditional American
songbook, or the gravitational pull she sensed drawing her to Olympia,
it's her combining these talents and creative impulses with Palmer's
Midwestern charm, the long winters spent listening to a steady diet of
Townes Van Zandt and John Hartford and the strange moment of fate
that left him with two inherited banjos as a young man; this combination
has resulted in a uniquely original sound that is The Lowest Pair.
