    Who's Next

Ranked 28/500 on Rolling Stone Magazine's 500 Greatest Albums of All Time.

Who's Next is regarded by many as The Who's masterpiece which says a lot considering the group's legendary output. Originally, Pete Townshend intended these songs for the massive multimedia extravaganza, Lifehouse which was eventually abandoned. Producer Glyn Johns convinced Townshend and the Who to present the best of this material as a straightforward Rock & Roll record and it resulted in some of the group's most focused and powerful work ever produced. Bookended by the classics Baba O'Riley and Won't Get Fooled Again, Who's Next is one of the defining albums of '70s hard rock from one of the greatest bands of all time.

Who's Next has been named one of the best albums of all time by VH1 (#13) and Rolling Stone (#28 on its 500 Greatest Albums of All Time). Upon its release it was named the best album of the year in The Village Voice Pazz & Jop critics poll. It was also ranked #3 in Guitar World's Greatest Classic Rock Albums list. Many of its nine tracks are perennial favourites on classic rock radio, especially Baba O'Riley, Bargain, Behind Blue Eyes, and the closing track Won't Get Fooled Again. The album appeared at number 15 on Pitchfork Media's top 100 albums of the 1970s. The album is also included in the book 1001 Albums You Must Hear Before You Die. In 2006, the album was chosen by TIME Magazine as one of the 100 best albums of all time. In 2007 it was also inducted into the Grammy Hall of Fame for historical, artistic and significant value. In 1999 it was the subject of a Classic Albums documentary produced by Eagle Rock Entertainment which has aired on VH1 and BBC among others, entitled Classic Albums: The Who - Who's Next. The album was selected as the 32nd-best of all time by Mojo in January 1996. In 2011, Classic Rock Review named Who's Next its album of the year for 1971.

    Who's Feeling Young Now?

Punch Brothers release their new album, Whos Feeling Young Now?, on vinyl March 20. Completed over three weeks at Blackbird Studios in Nashville, the record was produced by Grammy Award winner Jacquire King (Kings of Leon, Tom Waits, Modest Mouse). Whos Feeling Young Now? is the follow-up to 2010s Grammy-nominated Antifogmatic, about which the New York Times said: Punch Brothers have the unplugged lineup of an old-fashioned string band But their music is as radical as new acoustic music can be.

Ten songs from Whos Feeling Young Now? were written by Punch Brothers, with the bands friend Josh Ritter co-writing lyrics on two tunes (Hundred Dollars and New York City). Additionally, the album contains the bands interpretations of Radioheads Kid A and the Swedish group VÄsens Flippen. The vinyl album was pressed on two discs of 140-gram, audiophile-quality vinyl and includes four additional Punch Brotherspenned tunes. Pre-orders include an instant download of the album track Movement and Location and an exclusive set of five custom Punch Brothers paper coasters illustrated by New Yorker cartoonist Matthew Diffee, signed by the band.

Punch Brothers was formed in 2006 by mandolinist/singer Chris Thile with four other virtuosic musicians: fiddler Gabe Witcher, banjo player Noam Pikelny, bassist Paul Kowert, and guitarist Chris Critter Eldridge. Their first Nonesuch record, Punch, was released in 2008 and combined elements of the bands many musical interests, including indie rock, folk, jazz, bluegrass, and classical music. In 2009 they all moved to New York City and began a regular, standing-room-only, residency at the Living Room, trying out new songs as well as inspired covers; these shows ultimately spawned Antifogmatic.

Whos Feeling Young Now? is less evasive than Antifogmatic and Punch, said Thile. And I feel like part of that is us becoming more comfortable with who we are as a band, and me becoming more comfortable with who I am as a singer.

As much spiritual adherents of black sounds as they were of black Islam, Fathers Children was born in the dirt and grime of Washington, D.C., and incubated in local producer Robert Hosea Williams less-than-immaculate suburban beltway garage. Hailing from the Adams-Morgan neighborhood, in 1973 Nick Smith, Billy Sumler, and Ted Skeet Carpenter created a lost document of gritty soul, concerned with its own time and place, stripped of the L.A. gloss that permeated the the groups own 1979 debut for Mercury.

Unreleased until now, Fathers Childrens true freshman offering is an amalgam of sunny vocal group harmonies, fuzz guitar solos, shimmering keys, bubbling percussion, spiritual prophecy, and dub experiments. Whos Gonna Save The World gets the full Numero treatment, with extensive notes and scores of unpublished photos. Deluxe LP edition includes the bonus 45, Linda Movement b/w Intellect.

Peace Sells... But Who's Buying? (Awaiting Repress)

A bona-fide thrash metal masterpiece, Peace Sells...But Who's Buying? combines a punkish political awareness with a dark, threatening, typically heavy metal worldview and it remains one of the most powerful and contagious thrash records of the era. It catapulted Megadeth into the mainstream music scene and earned them worldwide attention from both critics and the heavy metal community alike. In addition to the propulsive title track, the album features the scorchers Wake Up Dead, Black Friday and My Last Words among others.

    Ernie Chambers V. God

Last wave punks Virgin Islands have been making waves in their home city of Seattle and beyond since their inception in the fall of 2009. Ernie Chambers V. God, their debut full-length, is a politically provocative and musically bold rock album with 11 socially charged manifestos that could be the perfect house music for the last party on earth. Arguably post punk and definitely post modern, its an intense and sincere statement from a band whos not afraid to buck the status quo, much like Ernie Chambers himself. Virgin Islands usher in the last wave of rock with conviction.

    Will The Guns Come Out

Hanni El-Khatib, touted as one of the most talented acts in L.A. right now is a a one-man band, singing, songwriting and producing all on his own. His debut album, Will The Guns Come Out features a synthesized mix of '50s and '60s garage rock, soul, blues and even a bit of folk. His attitude is his greatest attribute, claiming to strive to write songs about anyone whos ever been shot or hit by a train and he brings with him the rawness of Phil Spector, Jack White, the Shangri-Las and the Black Keys all at once.

    Feel The Steel

Los Angeles' premiere heavy metal band, Steel Panther, are releasing their debut album, Feel The Steel, on Universal Republic Records. This mythical musical masterpiece has been 20 years in the making with the band retuning in 2009 to reclaim their rightful place among metal musics heavyweights. Powered by audacious frontman Michael Starr's fearless vocal charge, the group ignites audiences from every walk of life with their unbridled valentine that goes right for the jugular of the heavy metal repertoire. Joining the effervescent Starr are Steel Panthers Stix Zadinia on drums, Satchel on guitar, and bassist Lexxi Foxxx.

As word of Steel Panthers return began to spread around the music community, a whos who of musical artists stepped up to join the band in reclaiming metals place among the top of the music landscape. Allison Robertson of the Donnas and Justin Hawkins from the Darkness make an appearance on the Steel Panther mantra number, Party All Day while Avenged Sevenfolds M. Shadows lends his voice to Turn Out The Lights. Anthraxs Scott Ian shows up on the soon to be international hit, Asian Hooker alongside Slipknots Corey Taylor who also appears on the soon-to-be classics, Eyes Of A Panther and Death To All But Metal. Boy (Discontinued)

Its enough to make you stop and say, What is that? It being the gorgeous melodies and lean, spellbound guitar lines of Colin Caulfield, an English/French lit major whos about to change what it means to be a shapeshifting singer-songwriter in the YouTube age.

Just ask Bradford Cox. He knows. Why, just a year ago, the Deerhunter frontman stumbled upon Colin Caulfields organ-grinding rendition of Rainwater Cassette Exchange and said its fantastically superior to the original. It actually sent shivers up my spine, especially during the second verse.

Believe it or not, that chilling cover was just a warmup session. As killer as he is at capturing the very essence of everything from Animal Collective to Ariel Pink, Caulfieds true talent is in telling his own Young Man stories. The first chapter of which goes by the name Boy, a deceivingly-simple suite of songs about wanting to grow up without having the slightest idea of what being a man actually means.

Now thats a reason to hit rewind, from the tone-setting tenderness and psych-infused harmonies of Five to the restless rhythms (Caulfield was a drummer well before he became a singer/guitarist) and room-engulfing intimacy of Up So Fast. Both of which feature some of the most hopeful/haunting choruses youll hear all year.

And thats just the beginning, of course. Since Young Man was conceived as a concept project about the passing of time, love, and loss, Caulfield already has two loosely-linked LPs on tap, a faceless collection of fragile characters that could be any one of us, really.

A lot of its autobiographical, explains Caulfield, but its universal at the same time, because everyone goes through these things.

Listen closely. Itll all make sense soon enough. Trust us.

    Gets Over You

There are only so many times you can take back that cheating lover or buy any of their sorry excuses. Its easier said than done, but one soul band is taking a stand. The Right Now isnt going to take it anymore. The Right Now is fed up. And on their second record, The Right Now Gets Over You.

The challenging title is a reality check, but delivered with a wink from singer Stefanie Berecz. Its just a representation of the stories in the songs. Nearly every track has a cheating character, or someone whos had enough of their lover. Its a mixed bag of empowerment and regret. Gets Over You continues the its complicated theme of 2010′s Carry Me Home, although this outing shows Berecz in a darker, seedier role.

Recorded in a cathartic, week-long session in Los Angeles, CA with producer Sergio Rios (Orgone), Gets Over You takes the Chicago septets soulful sound to the warm, crackling world of analog tape and vintage instruments. Bereczs voice, often compared to those of Chaka Kahn and Joss Stone, takes center stage. The band shines with raw, gritty performances and elegant arrangements that are the result of countless hours of performing, rehearsing and touring together.

Bereczs emotionally-charged vocal performance has been the bands calling card at over 200 shows in the past two years. The Right Nows electrifying live show, matching suits, choreographed horn section, and all, has earned them a reputation as dynamic, complex, hip and just downright fun. (Gapers Block).

Wider Grooves, Superior Sound: Mobile Fidelitys 45RPM Edition The Last Word in Analog Fidelity

Best of Both Worlds: Dylan Pairs With a Band on Side One, Goes It Alone on Astonishing Solo Thought Dream Odysseys on Side Two

Epitome of Iconic: Everything from Cover Art to Sound to Attitude to Song Represents New Benchmark in Respective Categories

    Numbered, Limited Edition

Bob Dylan's Bringing It All Back Home represents the moment that pop and rock music became their own art form, expressions finally treated with the same seriousness and respect as classical and jazz. Incalculably influential, the 1965 landmark established myriad benchmarks in songwriting, sound, artwork, and performance. It served the world notice that Dylan was no longer just the virtuoso visionary tuned into the wants of the folk community. Its a disarming broadcast that declares Dylan's surroundings and personality, and those of his audiences, whether they knew it or not, drastically changed.

As part of its Bob Dylan catalog restoration series, Mobile Fidelity is thoroughly humbled to have the privilege of mastering the iconic LP from the original master tapes and pressing it on 45RPM LPs at RTI. The end result is the very finest, most transparent analog stereo edition of Bringing It All Back Home ever produced. Forever renowned for its organic sound, the albums you-are-there-presence is fantastically enhanced on this superb version, with wider and deeper grooves affording playback of previously buried information.

The sonics are so realistic, balanced, and tonally accurate that acoustic guitars resonate with the woody decay they do as when you strum them on your lap. Equally vivid are the textures of the drum skins, amplified pitch of the electric guitars, and ambient hum of the interior space of Columbias Studio B. Both the plugged-in and acoustic sides claim a discerning level of microdynamics, spaciousness, imaging, and warmth that will send even the most rabid Dylan fan into a tizzy. And what better record to cause such enthusiastic reactions?

More than 45 years after its release, Bringing It All Back Home continues to come on like a prophetic transmission from a savant whos privy to cerebral viewpoints, mental transferences, and thought dreams elusive to everyone but him. With the flipside of the album, Dylan strings together four of the most unflinching, forward-reaching, and boundary-breaking acoustic-based compositions ever played. In addressing liberating psychedelia, lost innocence, institutional naivetÉ, and tarnished relationships, respectively, Dylan constructs a compositional quartet/suite that functions as metaphor for his waving goodbye to political folk musics imprisoning rules and bounding restrictivenessand a rough guide to the transcendental poetry, shape-shifting vocal phrasing, and alternate tunings he now embraced.

Side One remains one of the boldest cohesive artistic statements ever assembled. Dylan, forever throwing down the gauntlet to detractors and narrow-minded fans, plugging in with a band and kicking it all off with the in-your-face hootenanny Subterranean Homesick Blues before romping, slashing, and rolling through Maggies Farm, another fun albeit caustic indictment of homogenous thought and bohemian method. Dylans attitude undergoes a self-awakening metamorphosis, his lyrical scope broadened, his hallucinogenic interests increased, his willingness to embrace paradoxes and shake them out with mind-convulsing aptitude in line with his progression towards bizarre imagery.

Bringing It All Back Home marks the moment when paradigms permanently shifted, preexisting standards fell, and fresh aural, poetic, and sonic dialects came to fore. Albums dont come more vetted. You deserve to experience it in the finest-possible quality.

Given the sonic and artistic merit of this album, we anticipate huge demand.

In A Silent Way (Awaiting Repress)

Float Into the Ether: Gorgeous 1969 Experimental Treasure Among the Most Atmospheric Jazz Albums Ever Recorded

Delicate, Immersing, Dynamic: Mobile Fidelity Reissue Magnifies the Bold Textures, Soothing Ambience, and Transcendent Moods

Davis First Fusion Album Features John McLaughlin, Chick Corea, Herbie Hancock, Joe Zawinul, Wayne Shorter, Dave Holland, and Tony Williams

Sketches of Spain, Kind of Blue, Milestones, Round About Midnight, and Four & More Also Available from Mobile Fidelity

Shhh. The command to be quiet is no just part of the title of one of the two sprawling compositions on this pioneering album. Its also an apt metaphor for the relaxed hypnotism and spaced-out atmosphere that define In a Silent Way, a record that pushes the boundaries of studio possibilities, artist-producer relationships, and rock-jazz chasms. Recognized as Miles Davis first full-on fusion effort and part of his electric era, the 1969 landmark claims a Whos Who lineup that sends the music into an ethereal stratosphere.

Part of Mobile Fidelitys Miles Davis catalog restoration series, In a Silent Way now immerses the listener in linoleate landscapes starlit by the intuition, suspension, and paradoxes wrought by a once-in-a-lifetime collective. Half-speed mastered from the original master tapes and pressed at RTI, this unsurpassed 180g LP edition lifts the veil on the cutting-edge assembly process that created the pair of lengthy suites. Helmed by three electric instruments, the beveled compositions melt away all preconceived notions of jazz, rock, and ambience, following a loose theory Davis dubbed New Directions.

Few albums are so delicately textured. And on Mobile Fidelitys meticulous analog reissue, such sulcate elements pour over ink-black backgrounds on a canyon-wide soundstage. In particular, Tony Williams inventive percussive touch he causes the cymbals to shimmer as a pieces of silver tend to do when exposed to sunlight is broadcast with lifelike three-dimensional qualities, the panoramic view extending to Davis nocturnal trumpet, Wayne Shorter's ribbon-unfurling saxophone, Dave Hollands extrapolative bass, and the mosaic of keys.

If the records only accomplishment is its introduction of guitarist John McLaughlin to the world, it alone would be enough. Yet In a Silent Way continues to bedazzle, puzzle, and inspire for myriad reasons not the least of which is the seemingly telepathic communicative methods employed by the groups members. The lineup is great on paper, but, if its even possible, the octet sounds even better in practice, with the instruments and tonalities conjoining in avant-garde communion like hyper-sensitive tentacles exploring the stippled landscapes of an undiscovered planet.

Diverting from expectation, tubular grooves twist, turn, and spin, sometimes piling atop of each other, always shying away from structure and melody. Ellipsoidal solos provide hesitant guidance, ranging from Chick Corea's Fender Rhodes phrases to Davis decorative spirals. And as color is the primary unit of currency on Davis Sketches of Spain, laidback episodes, geometric spaces, and quiet sensuality reign here, with the sets maverick reputation attained via musings on solitude rather than explosions of noise.

Controversial for the period, the heavily edited production of In a Silent Way blew open the once-locked doors on what producers could attempt and how artists could assist them. Knitted together as one would construct a cross-hatched quilt, songs contain grafts of repeat passages that provide unifying structure and experimental continuity. What a statement.

    Dig

Taking up from where iconic bands like Deep Purple and Bad Company have left off, Heaven & Earth is on a mission to resurrect the sanctity of classic rock in its purest, most accessible form on their third studio album titled Dig. Dig was produced by Dave Jenkins-who's turned the knobs for everyone from Metallica to Tower of Power-and features special guests Howard Leese (Heart, Paul Rodgers), Richie Sambora (Bon Jovi) and David Paich (Toto).

Heaven & Earth-guitarist Stuart Smith, singer Joe Retta, bassist Chuck Wright, drummer Richie Onori and keyboardist Arlan Schierbaum-fuse elements of hard rock, blues and bits of classical with bravado and a razor-sharp focus.

As the band's founder and visionary, Smith says about Dig, "I feel that with the crafting of the songs on this album, the incredible band we've put together, especially with powerhouse vocalist Joe Retta and the unwavering support of Quarto Valley Records' President, Bruce Quarto, we really have a shot at getting Heaven & Earth the attention it deserves. This album is by far, the best thing I have ever done in my life!"

The British-born guitarist spent the 70's bending strings with numerous groups before he distinguished himself by making the acquaintance of Deep Purple's Ritchie Blackmore, who mentored the up-and-coming musician. "I'm probably one of the few people in the world who grew up with a poster of someone on their wall, ended up meeting them, becoming friends with them, and getting mentored by them," Smith notes. At the urging of Blackmore, Smith migrated to Los Angeles where the seeds for Heaven & Earth were planted. The band released two critically acclaimed albums-Heaven & Earth Featuring Stuart Smith (1994) and Windows to the World (2000)-which helped advance Smith's musical vision. Now, with Dig complete, the guitarist says Heaven & Earth is a true band, an energized collective of like-minded musicians who are excited at bringing its unique, celestial brand of rock to audiences all over the world in 2013. "All the pieces are in place," he explains with graceful candor. "We're ready to make this our year."

All the backing tracks on Dig were recorded at Ocean Studios in Burbank, California, and all the overdubs were done at the band's own Wine Cellar Studios in Woodland Hills, California. To further refine the record's sonic reach, Jenkins used a Closed Loop Analog Signal Processor (CLASP), a device that integrates real analog tape recording into digital tools like Pro Tools to create a warm and vintage sound. Both Van Halen and Aerosmith enlisted a CLASP on their most recent albums.

The Evening Visits...And Stays For Years

Born of the small but vibrant Brisbane punk/new wave scene of the late Seventies, Peter
Milton Walsh began to cultivate the mysterious, moody myth that would follow him through
out his career that has taken him around the world. But before setting out abraod, Walsh
certainly made his mark on the Brisbaine scene. His band, The Apartments, formed in 1978
and spent the next year playing ample amounts of shows around Brisbaine. With a reputation
that preceeded him, Walsh was saught out by Robert Forster and Grant McLennan,
members of one of Brisbaine's most noteworthy bands, The Go-Betweens. Having been
offered an 8 album deal by Beserkly Records, Forster and McLennon asked Walsh to join
The Go-Betweens as their fourth member in late 1978. The union was, however, short lived.
There were personality differences, which led McLennon to famously say "Walsh is night, we
are day. We're sun, he's rain.".

After the deal with Beserkly fell through, Walsh returned to The Apartments, leaving The
Go-Betweens as a three piece. They went on to affectionately write a song for Walsh,
entitled "Don't Let Him Come Back", which included the line "Here he comes, with his twelve
o'clock junk...who's that dressed in black? Who's that in his apartment?". Things weren't sour
between the two bands and The Apartments recorded their first EP, "Return of the Hypnotist"
on The Go-Between's Able Label. But before the EP was even released, The Apartments
broke up and Walsh left for New York City. During his time in NYC, Walsh played
mustic with a number of bands and recorded many songs that would serve as demos for
future releases for the still defunct Apartments.

Returning to Australia in 1984, Walsh got the band back together and recorded a few
singles, including "All You Wanted". All the while the band were also recording demos, which
led to a record deal with London's legendary Rough Trade Records, prompting Walsh to
move to London. It was there that he recorded his first proper LP, "The Evening Visits... And
Stays for Years". The album received strong praise and drew comparisons to a wide range of
acts such as Cocteau Twins, Nick Drake and Bob Dylan. The NME said of the record ""after
whetting our appetites with last year's classic import single 'All You Wanted' The Apartments
have stunned us to a reverential silence. This album is a pure heart-wrencher, and should
only be listened to after dark.".

Although The Apartments and Walsh continued to tour and record with a variety of line ups,
it is these early works that provide a definitive look at their sound. Available all together
for the first time, Captured Tracks are pleased to present "The Evening Visits... And Stays for
Years" along with "The Return of the Hypnotist", the "All You Wanted" single and a collection
of demos from "The Evening Visits...". Complete with liner notes by Robert Forster and Walsh
himself, this increadible collection of Walsh's first seven years of recordings is not to be missed.

    Savages (Discontinued)

Max Cavalera is the walking embodiment of creative energy, of all of the diverse layers of urgency that are possible from that select few whose artistic output defines genres. Mystic shaman, protest singer, revolutionary hero, everyday metalhead, furious consumer of heavy music of all shades, husband, father, leader, songwriter Cavalera reigns as the adoptive tribal chief of a generation of fans, stretching from the roughest slums of South America to the coldest confines of Russia. Anywhere that people are disenfranchised, the songs of SOULFLY serve as their anthems.

Armed with Cavalera's four-stringed guitars, unmistakable growl and instantly recognizable riffage, the muddy tones and constant rhythmic bounce of SOULFLY has retained its gritty edge while pushing the boundaries of what's possible in metal. »Savages« represents a career-defining moment, solidifying the lineup with longtime lead guitarist Marc Rizzo (who has been in SOULFLY almost as long as Max was in SEPULTURA), bassist Tony Campos (Static X, Ministry, Prong) and Max's 21 year-old Zyon, who splits his time between drumming in LODY KONG and now SOULFLY.

"All of the things that make SOULFLY killer are combined in Savages," Max declares.

»Savages« melds the most brutal, the heaviest and overall the most vibrant components that made up each record in SOULFLY's diverse catalog. By Max's own account, »Savages« is possessed of the tribal groove of the first two SOULFLY albums, particularly in songs like 'Bloodshed', 'Ayatollah of Rock 'N' Rolla' and 'Master of Savagery'. But there's also the thrash metal that was found on DARK AGES and OMEN; whereas the CAVALERA CONSPIRACY records contain short, punky bursts, the new SOULFLY record gets into the epic length territory of early METALLICA. The death metal vibe of SOULFLY's »Enslaved« emerges in songs like 'Fallen' and 'Cannibal Holocaust'.

"I really like the name »Savages«. I like single words that sound powerful, like 'Primitive', 'Roots', 'Arise'," Max explains. "It's about the human condition right now. We have the Internet and we're working on missions to Mars, but we are still decapitating each other and blowing up marathons. We're still savages. Even with technology and how far we've come in the world, our spirit is still that of a savage."

A trailblazing pioneer and musician with millions of albums sold who nevertheless retains boundless street cred due to his grimy, raw and undeniable authenticity; Max Cavalera is one of the most prolific artists the realm of heavy music has ever known. There's CAVALERA CONSPIRACY, which reunited Max with his brother and former bandmate, Igor Cavalera. There was the brutal attack of NAILBOMB, Max's collaboration with Alex Newport from FUDGE TUNNEL, which included members of DEAD KENNEDYS, FRONT LINE ASSEMBLY, BIOHAZARD and NEUROSIS on-stage. There's his forthcoming band with members of THE DILLINGER ESCAPE PLAN, MASTODON and THE MARS VOLTA. Of course, there's Max's unassailable work as SEPULTURA's founder, leading the Brazilian band from their badass lo-fi beginnings, through their era of sophisticated thrash classics, up through the cultural landmark that is 'Roots'.

SOULFLY began almost instantaneously after his departure from the band he founded. The eponymously titled debut »Soulfly« sold over 500,000 copies in the United States alone, further expanding upon the tribal foundation of 'Roots' with percussive instrumentation, forays into esoteric sounds and multiple guest performers. Across the seven albums and never-ending tours that followed, Max worked with a who's-who of the heavy music scene as band mates, guest musicians and touring members, including guys from SLIPKNOT, SLAYER, MEGADETH, DEFTONES, RADIOHEAD, STONE SOUR, CYPRESS HILL, MACHINE HEAD, DEVILDRIVER, FEAR FACTORY, MORBID ANGEL, THROWDOWN, S.O.D., SKINDRED, BORKNAGAR, WILL HAVEN and CATTLE DECAPITATION, among others.

In addition to Max's own self-production, a number of important producers have lent their skills to SOULFLY, including »Roots« producer Ross Robinson (KORN, AT THE DRIVE-IN), Toby Wright (Ozzy Osbourne, SLAYER), Andy Sneap (MEGADETH, KILLSWITCH ENGAGE), ex-SOULFLY guitarist Logan Mader (FIVE FINGER DEATH PUNCH, GORJIA) and Zeuss (HATEBREED, SUICIDE SILENCE) and Terry Date (PANTERA, DEFTONES).

Cavalera asked Date, who had mixed for SOULFLY in the past, to produce the new album. Once studio time with the legendary producer was on the calendar, Max kicked into high gear with the material. Max and Zyon worked on the songs that would comprise »Savages« at home. "Zyon came up to me and said, 'Give me a shot. I'll play on the record for you. I won't let you down," explains the elder Cavalera. "I went into a room with him to jam and it felt great. So I said, 'Fuck yeah, let's do it!"

Generally on a SOULFLY album, the drummers would learn the songs in the studio, based on demo recordings from Max. This time, Max had the luxury of working out the songs at home with Zyon. "We jammed every single day for a month. He knew 90% of the material already when we got into the studio. It reminded me of recording the old Sepultura stuff, like Arise and Chaos A.D., Igor knew exactly what he was going to do before we went into the studio. This was very similar."

Cavalera says he must've written at least 1,000 riffs specifically for »Savages«. "The killer riff is what hooks the whole song together," he says. "For me the writing process is about finding the most killer riffs possible. It's a battle; sometimes I struggle with the guitar for hours. You have to throw it down on the floor and take a break. Come back a few hours later. 'Let's try this again, motherfucker!' Grab it again and go to battle, go to war with the guitar until you get the right riffs."

Max points to BLACK SABBATH's 'Symptom of the Universe' as one of the penultimate riffs of all time, citing SABBATH's Tony Iommi and METALLICA frontman James Hetfield as among the riff-masters he most admires. "I think of riff making as an art-form. I take it really seriously. I think it deserves more attention. It has such value."

Speaking of riffs, Rizzo came into the band a decade ago and his love of thrash metal, death metal and collaborative spirit has energized Max ever since. "When Marc entered Soulfly, it was a drastic change. He's the guitar player I've been looking for my whole life. Andreas [Kisser] and I really clicked when we worked together. I never had that again after that. We had other guys that were cool, but it was never 100% there. When Marc came in, I found it! We've developed a great bond since." Rizzo particularly shines on the opening track on Savages, 'Bloodshed.' "There's stuff all over the song - clean guitars, feedback - he just makes the song better."

Campos has a lengthy resume in the world of metal and Max says they bonded over their shared Latino heritage, among other things. "I had this idea about this guy Vargas, a Venezuelan cannibal, they call him 'El Comegente.' He's the Hannibal Lecter of the Andes. We both read about it. Tony sings some of it in Spanish and I sing in Portuguese. He's a great bass player too, fucking amazing. Killer bass tones, distortion, all balls-out metal. He keeps this shit real heavy, great tone. It's great recording with guys who know what they're doing. I don't have to ask if they know."

Max acknowledges the inherent risk in putting a 21 year-old behind the kit for such an important record, but it was a risk he absolutely wanted to take. "To have my son drumming on the album, that's killer. I like risks. I like to start shit up and see what happens. Even if I fail, at least I knew I tried. Rather than knowing I didn't try at all. To me, that's the bigger failure. It took a little bit of courage to put my son on it. I came to the studio and told Terry there was a young drummer who doesn't play to a click. Terry knew what to do and Zyon did great. The drums sound amazing."

Like all things Max Cavalera, does SOULFLY's »Savages is a family affair. Not only does it mark Zyon's recorded debut with the band, but one of Max's other kids throws down some vocals in the opening track, 'Bloodshed'. "My son Igor has a killer punk rock voice that reminds me of the old CORROSION OF CONFORMITY days," Max says. "The chorus has this old punk style riff, almost like a MISFITS type riff. His voice is killer."

Like every SOULFLY album, »Savages« contains an impressive guest list comprised of veterans and up-and-comers. CLUTCH's Neil Fallon turns up on 'Ayatollah of Rock 'N' Rolla', the title of which was inspired by Mel Gibson's classic Mad Max 2: The Road Warrior movie. Jamie Hanks from I DECLARE WAR brought his high and low deathcore vocals to 'Fallen', a death metal oriented song Max says is in the vein of CANNIBAL CORPSE.

Mitch Harris from NAPALM DEATH contributed vocals to 'K.C.S.' Harris has been around the Cavaleras long enough that there are videos of him changing Zyon's diapers when SOULFLY's new drummer was just one month old. "Mitch came to the studio just to hang out during a day off from tour," Max explains. "I'm like, 'You ready to sing some shit on this record?' I put him on the spot. He's like, 'Right now?' I said, 'Fuck yeah, let's do it!' There was one point where we were recording together where he did a scream and I saw his eyeball popping out of his face like a cartoon. I was like, 'Dude that was the most metal thing I've seen in a long time.'"

Even as Max continues to consume new music from band like NINE INCH NAILS, MAN MUST DIE, TRIGGER THE BLOODSHED and I DECLARE WAR, even as he revisits seminal material from METALLICA, SLAYER, C.O.C. and the like, and indulges his penchant for world music, and gets his hands in his other projects and collaborations, it all adds up to a singular, distinct, straightforward and riff-heavy machine known as SOULFLY.
