    Willie's Blues

Part of the ultimate audiophile Prestige stereo reissues from Analogue Productions - 25 of the most collectible, rarest, most audiophile-sounding Rudy Van Gelder recordings ever made. All cut at 33 1/3.

All mastered from the original analog master tapes by mastering maestro Kevin Gray. 200-gram LPs pressed at Acoustic Sounds' state-of-the-art pressing plant, Quality Record Pressings, plated by Gary Salstrom

Deep groove label pressings, tip-on jackets on thick cardboard stock

Since the early 1950s, Willie Dixon has been the studio kingpin of Chicago blues, having written, produced, and played bass on countless classics by Muddy Waters, Howlin' Wolf, Otis Rush, Koko Taylor, and many others. Dixon has always managed to find time away from the studio to work as a performer, slapping his upright bass and singing his own tunes in a highly compelling, conversational baritone. He was working the coffeehouse circuit with pianist Memphis Slim when he cut this, his first album as a leader, in 1959. Besides his unique interpretations of "Nervous" and "Built for Comfort," it includes eight lesser-known compositions from Dixon's prolific pen. It is unlike all other albums by Dixon, as he and Slim are accompanied, not by the usual crew of Chicago blues players, but by a group of New York mainstream jazzmen, including tenor saxophonist Hal Ashby, guitarist Wally Richardson and drummer Gus Johnson.

    I Am The Blues

Chicago Bluesman Willie Dixon was perhaps best known for his songwriting. He wrote or co-wrote over 500 songs and his songs have been recorded by some of the best-known blues musicians of his era, including Muddy Waters, Howlin' Wolf, Little Walter, and Buddy Guy.

Later, his songs were popularized by groups, such as The Rolling Stones, The Doors, Cream, and Led Zeppelin, whose Whole Lotta Love was loosely based don Dixon´s You Need Love. On this 1970 LP, the quintessential blues songwriter performs his own tunes - every one a classic: I'm Your Hoochie Coochie Man, The Little Red Rooster, Spoonful and of course Back Door Man to name a few!

Long overdue, the album was inducted into the Blues Hall of Fame in 1986, whereas Willie Dixon was posthumously inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1994.

From the original 1964 Chess analog masters! Pressed at Quality Record Pressings!

    Mastered by Bernie Grundman

New Gatefold jacket, with extra photos!

Folk Singer has been an audiophile staple for years. It always gets a bunch of play at hi-fi shows. It's a no-doubter demonstration disc. But never before has it sounded like this!

There are a handful of landmark albums in any genre. In the blues, one of them is Muddy Waters' Folk Singer. Originally released in 1964, Folk Singer was the only acoustic album Waters ever recorded, thus becoming the first and perhaps best blues concept album ever. Muddy of course started out playing acoustic blues in the Delta, and he's clearly very comfortable in this return to his roots, which was designed to appeal to the mid-1960s surge of interest in folk music.

Muddy's supporting cast includes a very young Buddy Guy on guitar, Willie Dixon at the upright bass and Clifton James on drums.

This recording has enormous presence with ample room for Muddy's booming voice to resonate.

    Southern Blood

SOUTHERN BLOOD serves as a remarkable final testament from an artist whose contributions have truly shaped rock & roll throughout the past four decades. This is Allman's first all-new recording since 2011's GRAMMY® Award-nominated solo landmark, LOW COUNTRY BLUES.

Produced by Don Was and recorded in Muscle Shoals where Duane Allman and the earliest seeds of the Allman Brothers Band were sown, Southern Blood is among the most uniquely personal of the Rock & Roll Hall of Famer's career. This emotionally expansive collection of songs written by friends and favorite artists including Jackson Browne, Willie Dixon, Jerry Garcia & Robert Hunter, Lowell George and Spooner Oldham & Dan Penn serves as a salutary farewell to his legion of devoted fans and admirers.

    Poet Of The Blues

    First Time On Vinyl!

Is there another more responsible for the blues as we know them than Willie Dixon? A songwriter and musician without peer, Willie wrote blues standard after blues standard. Not only did his songs become career-making hits for the likes of Muddy Waters, Howlin' Wolf, Little Walter and Otis Rush, among others, but it inspired another generation of musicians including the Rolling Stones, the Yardbirds, Cream and Led Zeppelin, to name just a few.

Poet Of The Blues, available on vinyl for the first time, features 21 classic Dixon songs.

Besides his well-known songs, recorded in the early 70s, this compilation contains the classic 1947-1952 Big Three sessions. These recordings prove the most interesting historically.

    I'm Ready

    Import

Muddy Waters, the undisputed king of Chicago blues, hit a string of highly successful albums in the late 70s. In between Hard Again and King Bee came in 1978 I'm Ready, a powerful blues record containing new material and classic reworks. Driving blues burners such as Willie Dixon's "I'm Ready" and "Rock Me" are varied by slow jams like "33 Years", "Hoochie Coochie Man" and "Screamin' And Cryin'". Muddy is clearly feeling alright with these song selections. As on Hard Again, Johnny Winter is taking care of the production duties, allowing I'm Ready to be a spontaneous outburst of pure bluesyness, with a lively feel.

    About Pure Pleasure

At the beginning of the 90s, in the early days of audiophile vinyl re-releases, the situation was fairly straightforward. Companies such as DCC, Mobile Fidelity, Classic Records and, of course, Pure Pleasure all maintained a mutual, unwritten ethical code: we would only use analogue tapes to manufacture records.

During the course of the present vinyl hype, many others have jumped on the bandwagon in the hope of securing a corner of the market. Very often they are not so ethical and use every imaginable source to master from: CDs, LPs, digital files, MP3s - or employed existent tools from the 80s and 90s for manufacturing.

A digital delay is gladly used when cutting a lacquer disc because tape machines with an analogue delay have become quite rare and are therefore expensive. When cutting the lacquer, the audio signal is delayed by one LP revolution against the signal, which controls the cutter head, and for this a digital delay is very often employed. Of course, the resultant sound signal is completely digital and thus only as good as this delay.

We should like to emphasize that Pure Pleasure Records on principle only uses the original master tape as the basis for the entirely analogue cutting of lacquer discs. In addition, the pressing tool is newly manufactured as a matter of principle.

We only employ existing tools for manufacturing if an improved result is not forthcoming, e.g. the title Elvis Is Back, which was mastered by Steve Hoffman and Kevin Gray, or several titles from our Philips Classics series, which in any case Willem Makkee cut from the original masters at the Emil Berliner Studios in the 90s. It goes without saying that we only used the mother and that new tools were made for our production.

To put it in a nutshell: we can ensure you that our releases are free from any kind of digital effects and that the lacquer discs are newly cut.

and that the lacquer discs are newly cut.

Which Chuck E. Weiss do we talk about here? The one who so impressed blues legends Lightnin'
Hopkins and Willie Dixon as a Denver teenager that they took him out in their road bands? The one
who lived in LA's Tropicana Hotel in the 70s alongside Tom Waits and Rickie Lee Jones, ending up
namechecked on the classic Waits albums Small Change and Nighthawks at the Diner, and in Rickie Lee Jones' hit "Chuck E.'s in Love"? The one who has recorded with Tom Waits, Muddy Waters,
Howlin' Wolf, Roger Miller, Dr. John, Willie Dixon? Whichever Chuck E. Weiss you choose, he's a
legend, and his new album Red Beans and Weiss delivers on the big personality. Executive produced

A true poet of the blues, Lightnin' Hopkins was a master of tall, tongue-in-cheek tales, often made up on the spot in the recording studio. The first song on this album, I'm Going to Build Me a Heaven of My Own, describes an encounter with a bearded man claiming to be Jesus Christ. Hopkins also puts his personal stamp on Willie Dixon's My Babe and Smokey Hogg's Too Many Drivers, among others.

Stevie Ray Vaughan's third studio album Soul To Soul was released in 1985, just two years after his massive debut Texas Flood. Moving more into a soulful R&B-tinged blues sound, Stevie included two new band members on keyboard and saxophone for Soul To Soul.

The band knows their way around a number of cover versions of songs penned by Hank Ballard, Doyle Bramhall and Willie Dixon, bringing a variety of influences into Stevie Ray's brand of modern blues. His own compositions such as Say What, Ain't Gone 'N' Give Up On Love en Life Without You reveal an artist that is ever passionate in delivering real blues, and growing in his songwriting at the same time.

    Black To Blues

In April 2016, Black Stone Cherry released Kentucky, to great critical and commercial success. Kentucky reached new chart peaks for the band worldwide and was followed by massive touring through the United States, Europe, and Australia. In the midst of this all, the band found the time and dedication to record Black to Blues. On this EP, the quartet of Chris Robertson (vocals, guitar), Ben Wells (guitar, vocals), Jonathan Lawhon (bass, vocals) and John Fred Young (drums, harmonica, vocals) channel their blues music roots. The EP features six blues-classics originally written and/or performed by legendary musicians like Willie Dixon, Howlin' Wolf, Muddy Waters, Booker T. Jones, Albert King and Freddy King. On Black to Blues, these traditional songs get wildly Black Stone Cherry-fied, while also paying homage to the original on the other hand.

American Folk Blues Festival 1964 (Pure Pleasure)

German jazz publicist Joachim-Ernst Berendt first had the idea of bringing original African-American blues performers to Europe. Jazz had become very popular, and rock and roll was just gaining a foothold, and both genres drew influences directly back to the blues. Berendt thought that European audiences would flock to concert halls to see them in person.

Promoters Horst Lippmann and Fritz Rau brought this idea to reality. By contacting Willie Dixon, an influential blues composer and bassist from Chicago, they were given access to the blues culture of the southern United States. The first festival was held in 1962, and they continued almost annually until 1972, after an eight-year hiatus reviving the festival in 1980 until its final performance in 1985.
The concerts featured some of the leading blues artists of the 1960s, such as Muddy Waters, Howlin' Wolf, Willie Dixon, John Lee Hooker and Sonny Boy Williamson along with blues legends from an earlier period such as Sleepy John Estes, John Henry Barbee & Lightnin' Hopkins.

Attendees at Manchester in 1962, the first ever venue for the festival in Britain, included Mick Jagger, Keith Richards, Brian Jones and Jimmy Page. Subsequent attendees at the first London festivals are believed to have also included such influential musicians as Eric Burdon, Eric Clapton, and Steve Winwood. Collectively these were the primary movers in the blues explosion that would lead to the British Invasion.

    Sho' Nuff

Willie Dixon once told Wild Child Butler, You are the moan of the suffering woman, the groan of the dying man. You ain't nothing but the blues.

Here's a man who's been heavily praised by Dixon, Muddy Waters, Howlin' Wolf and Jimmy Rogers just to name a few; a man who those blues legends were proud to accompany. As traditional as the blues on this album are, there's no mistaking a Wild Child tune. They can't be played this way by anyone else - not so boisterous, not so Wild Child. His blues sometimes sound angry and raw, other times soft and country-polished.

This release offers a fine mix of Wild Child's down-home acoustic sound, his slow, muscular blues and his up-tempo shuffle or snapping blues. As Wild Child himself said, If you can't dig these blues, you got a hole in your soul [to borrow from a Jimmy Rogers saying]. Talkin' 'bout sho' 'nuff.

George 'Wild Child' Butler is one of the last original, hard-workin' delta bluesmen. Although his career started not until the 1960s, the old times' tradition is still clearly heard on his music. You may call it blues, you may call it southern soul, you may even call it rock 'n' roll, but you just can't categorize him to any particular field. There's just one George Butler, and then there are the others. - Butcher Pete Hoppula, Wang Dang Dula!...It's Time To Rock'n'rolla!

Fresh Cream is the first album by Cream, released in 1966. Laid down at the height of the UK blues boom, Fresh Cream covers the kind of territory you might expect from three of the most respected players on the scene at the time. With Clapton fresh just from his time with John Mayall, Ginger Baker leaving behind the R'n'B backwaters of Graham Bond Organisation, and a woefully under-employed Jack Bruce hightailing it from the increasingly pop-leaning Manfred Mann, the electric blues was their natural turf.

Highlights include the racing harmonica work-out, and the call and response excitements on Muddy Waters' "Rollin' and Tumblin'", a spine-tingled vocal on the Willie Dixon classic, "Spoonful", as well as the self-penned "Sleepy Time Time" which gives Clapton a free hand to wake up all and sundry. The traditional standard, Cat's Squirrel is given a rousing treatment, showing how well these players meshed.

    Blue & Lonesome

Pressed On Two 180 Gram LPs And Housed In A Gatefold Sleeve

"This album is manifest testament to the purity of their love for making music, and the blues is, for the Stones, the fountainhead of everything they do."

-Don Was, Co-Producer of 'Blue & Lonesome'

The Rolling Stones are set to release 'Blue & Lonesome', their first studio album in over a decade. Recorded in just three days in London, England, 'Blue & Lonesome' takes the band back to their roots and the passion for blues music which has always been at the heart and soul of The Rolling Stones.

Their approach to the album was that it should be spontaneous and played live in the studio without overdubs. The band - Mick Jagger (vocals & harp), Keith Richards (guitar), Charlie Watts (drums), and Ronnie Wood (guitar) were joined by their long time touring sidemen Darryl Jones (bass), Chuck Leavell (keyboards) and Matt Clifford (keyboards) and, for two of the twelve tracks, by old friend Eric Clapton, who happened to be in the next studio making his own album.

'Blue & Lonesome' sees the Rolling Stones tipping their hats to their early days as a blues band when they played the music of Jimmy Reed, Willie Dixon, Eddie Taylor, Little Walter and Howlin' Wolf - artists whose songs are featured on this album.

    Last Night's Dream (Pure Pleasure)

It's no wonder that this album, cut in 1968 with British blues maven Mike Vernon at the helm, works so well. When you team a rejuvenated Shines with his longtime compadres Horton, Spann, bassist Willie Dixon, and drummer Clifton James, a little blues history was bound to be made.

Johnny Shines is the ultimate Delta bluesman, combining the classic styles he learned as a youth into a very personal style, fluent, creative and forcefully talented as both a singer and guitarist - Jim DeKoester

He rates amongst the most important and individualistic blues stylists of the post-war years - Pete Welding

A forceful explosive blues singer whose strong, vibrato laden voice possesses a range and sensitivity which is rivalled by few other bluesmen - Peter Guralnick

    Musicians:

    • Johnny Shines (vocal, guitar)

    • Otis Spann (piano)

    • Big Walter Horton (harmonica)

    • Willie Dixon (bass)

    • Clifton James (drums)
