    Women And Children First (Remastered)

    Remastered

Van Halen's third record in as many years, Women and Children First doesn't surrender anything to its two famous predecessors. Eddie Van Halen, David Lee Roth, and company go for broke, amping up the energy and escalating the heaviness on a concise, hard-hitting 9-song set that also throws a few surprises into the mix.

Anchored by the one-two punch of And the Cradle Will Rock and Everybody Wants Some!!, the 1980 release marks the first and only time the group employed a female vocalist, as Nicolette Larson sings on the chorus during Could This Be Magic? In addition, the opening track features a phase-shifter-effected Wurlitzer piano being played through a 100-watt Marshall amplifier, the change in instrumentation a hint of the ambition that was to come.

Make no mistake: Women and Children First knows how to party hard, but there are also undercurrents of somber tension missing on the first two albums. Van Halen matures here and it's a welcome evolution, as confirmed by the power ballad In a Simple Rhyme and country-flavored Take Your Whiskey Home. But above all, this album rocks harder than any other VH effort.

No, the bottle of hairspray and liter of Jack Daniel's aren't included with this killer reissue, but cue this meticulously pressed LP up on a good system, turn up the volume, and the good time pleasures forever associated with early Van Halen come rushing back! Guaranteed.

Mastered from the original analog tapes and pressed at RTI, Rhino's new 180g LP brings brings the dynamics and punch of the fervent music into crystal-clear focus and also shines a spotlight on the group's trademarks: Roth's shuck-and-jive deliveries; Alex Van Halen's booming percussion; Michael Anthony's soulful bass; and of course, Eddie Van Halen's inimitable guitar heroics.

    Public Strain

On their debut self-titled album, Women embraced sonic brashness that deeper examination revealed to be tinted with sly pop melody. With their second album Public Strain, the band has honed a sound truthful to that reverb drenched noise while allowing the pop sensibilities to surface into clearer focus. This exact balance of delicate and dense is a pervasive thread throughout the album, reflecting the contradiction of the band's environment buried in urban sprawl framed by prairie landscape.

    Women

Women's self-titled debut touches upon Velvet Underground, Swell Maps and This Heat while not really having any obvious precursors. A lo-fi masterpiece cloaked in layers of vibrato and guitar wash. Women effortlessly mix noise, static and infectious hooks that manage to lean towards progressive psychedelia without pretense. The band is made up of Patrick Flegel, Matthew Flegel, Michael Wallace and Christopher Reimer and they reside in Calgary, Canada.

    White Women

We are officially on the cusp of the Canadian funk lords' fourth album's release. It's called White Women and it's a doozy. As a work of cultural theory, it posits that we are living in a post-nostalgia age. All previous genres and styles of music now coexist within a singularity of moves and gestures. (Ouch, sorry, got possessed by a cultural studies prof. for a second there but the foregoing is true of Chromeo, just FYI.) More importantly, as pure entertainment, White Women perpetuates and elevates Chromeo's existing blueprint: sexy funk, ass-targeting beats, melodic honey, and smart lyrics about the foibles of contemporary love.

Chromeo is an electrofunk duo based in Montreal, Canada composed of P-Thugg on keyboards, synthesizers, and talk box, and Dave 1 on guitar and lead vocals. The two childhood friends jokingly describe themselves as the only successful Arab/Jewish partnership since the dawn of human culture.World leaders, powerful CEOs, and assorted other fat cats could learn myriad lessons from Chromeo, but the number one tip that Dave 1 and P-Thugg have is this: Know thyself, know thy vibe, and stay thy course. The rest of the population will catch up. What this means is that Chromeo is really good at being Chromeo. The mission, the package, the vision-it's been a straight shot of pure intentionality from the jump. These Chromeo dudes? They have the whole being-these-Chromeo-dudes thing totally wired.

    Intoxicated Women

It has taken 20 years for Mick Harvey to resume his project of
translating Serge Gainsbourg's songs into English, and following
June's release of Volume 3, Delirium Tremens, Mick Harvey has now
announced the final in the series, Volume 4, Intoxicated Women.

Intoxicated Women contains many duets and songs written by
Gainsbourg, mostly during the 60s, in a period where he was
focusing his songwriting on singers such as France Galle, Juliette
Greco and most famously, Brigitte Bardot.

Mick Harvey explains, "After the initial recordings for Delirium
Tremens, JP Shilo and I continued investigating the duets and female
songs, many of which were unknown to me. So it became a voyage of
discovery into quite a lot of material I hadn't heard before. There are
even a couple of songs for which the only versions existing from the
60s are from TV performances Serge gave." ["The Drowned One" (La
NoyÉe) and "Wolfy Teeth" (Dents de Lait, Dents de Loup)]

The album opens with a stunning version of "Je T'aime (Moi non
plus)" - here titled "Ich Liebe Dich (Ich Dich Auch Nicht)" - rendered
in the sexiest German imaginable by the chanteuse Andrea Schroeder
and culminates with "Cargo Cult," the closing track from the classic
Melody Nelson album. In between, we are treated to a smorgasbord
of Gainsbourg gems in English (with a bit of Khmer thrown in).

    Women & Work

ATO Records is proud to announce the release of Women & Work, the new studio album from Memphis, TN's Lucero. Recorded at the historic Ardent Studios in Memphis, Women & Work was produced and mixed by Ted Hutt (Gaslight Anthem, Dropkick Murphys, Flogging Molly) and finds the band making an impressive step forward in both songwriting and in the evolution of their signature Memphis rock and soul sound. Frontman Ben Nichols says, This record is Lucero doing what we do best. It's one part barrelhouse rock & roll and one part lonesome nights. The thing is, we are having more fun than ever playing both on stage and off and I think that shows on this album. Gatefold vinyl with CD.

    Women & Children

West Coast-based AUTHOR & PUNISHER, the long-running, one-man industrial doom project propagated by iconic sound contortionist Tristan Shone, is pleased to announce his fifth and latest creation of audio rebellion. Titled Women & Children, the follow up to last year's critically lauded Ursus Americanus full-length further challenges the traditional confines of extreme music with eight tracks of audio exploration and mechanical decomposition.

Shone elaborates: "AUTHOR & PUNISHER's newest sonic endeavor combines elements of both machines and more traditional apparati to stretch and blur the dynamic palette from doom to industrial, to heavy bass music, and back again."

Adds Seventh Rule Recordings label head Scott Flaster: "The new AUTHOR & PUNISHER? On first listen I was thrown into a grey world where the bleakness of early industrial music layered with a heavier contemporary dirge. "

    Women Of Your Life

    White Colored Vinyl

Stripped-down, unblighted, bedroom pop songs... about girls. Women Of Your Life is the intimately facile sophomore album from indie-slackers Sleeping Bag.

The Bloomington, Indiana based trio is spearheaded by Dave Segedy, who is the group's drummer, songwriter and primary vocalist (that's right: a drummer who writes and sings all the songs!). Specializing in simple and honest songwriting, Malkmus-deadpan vocal delivery, and unusually addictive melodies, Sleeping Bag craft songs that are at once familiar and fresh.

The band's debut s/t album was released on Joyful Noise in August 2011, receiving praise from Under The Radar, Impose Magazine, Village Voice, RCRD LBL, and My Old Kentucky Blog. With their second album, the trio have matured in the ways one might expect: songs are a bit longer, lyrics a bit more personal, and arrangements more developed. But all of Sleeping Bag's signature elements are well represented
throughout: the heartfelt (In The Pocket, Still Life), the playful (Allison Cole, Saturday Night) and the unbelievably catchy (Soccer Ball, Walk Home).

Segedy's eortless melodies, accompanied by the distinctively jangling guitar work of Lewis Rogers and the tastefully minimal bass of David Woodru, combine to form a sound that summons the energy and earnestness of 90s rock, while sidestepping throwback territory. Familiar inuences are organically reconstructed into relevant,
captivating pop. These are instantly accessible songs which gain surprising depth with each obsessively repeated listen.

    War On Women (Awaiting Repress)

Baltimore, MD co-ed feminist punk act War On Women have announced their debut full-length, War On Women. Featuring 11 tracks, this S/T record was recently recorded with J. Robbins at the Magpie Cage (Against Me!, Coliseum, Lemuria). These new tracks are a natural progression for the band and a little more polished than their previous efforts, while remaining as blistering as ever. Vocalist Shawna Potter has …plenty of material to pull from when it comes to writing lyrics, considering the pervasive sexism in modern America, she commented.

War On Women formed in 2010 by several veterans of the Baltimore rock scene, including members of AVEC and Liars Academy. Describing their sound as thrash rock meets riot grrrl, War On Women write songs too inventive and too loud to be overshadowed by their equally powerful messages. The band's furious live sets capture all of the brevity and intensity of hardcore punk with another level of lyrical and musical sophistication. War On Women's songs attack sexist attitudes and institutionalized patriarchy women everywhere still face in the 21st century with humor, intelligence, righteous anger and monster riffs.

Of Horses, Kids, And Forgotten Women

Originally released in 1968, Hearts And Flowers' second and final album, Of Horses, Kids, and Forgotten Women, is mentioned mostly in passing as the major recording debut of future Eagle, Bernie Leadon. This is totally unfair as the album is a classic slice of late '60s West Coast psychedelic country-rock that is as good as or better than their amazing debut. 20th Century Women (Music From The Motion Picture)

Director Mike Mills first made his mark on the silver screen with the Academy Award-winning film Beginners, but his back catalog is also filled with a number of music videos, including those for songs by Everything But The Girl ("Temperamental"), Moby ("Run On"), Air ("All I Need"), Mansun ("Legacy"), Pulp ("Party Hard"), and Air ("Sexy Boy"). His appreciation of music also extends to the soundtracks of his films, and with 20TH CENTURY WOMEN, his latest cinematic endeavor, he's managed to put together one of the most musically diverse compilations in recent memory.

This is not praise derived from a desire to play up new product. This is simply the reality of the situation. How else to describe a compilation which sandwiches "Basin Street Blues," by Louis Armstrong & His Hot Five between tracks by Talking Heads and The Raincoats? We're talking about a musical landscape which finds Fred Astaire, Benny Goodman, and Rudy Vallee rubbing elbows with Siouxsie and the Banshees, Devo, and the Buzzcocks. It shouldn't work, and yet somehow it does.

Wild Women Don't Have The Blues (Pure Pleasure)

Although singer Nancy Harrow made a strong impression with this debut recording, she did not lead another record date until 1978 other than a lesser-known effort for Atlantic in 1966. Obviously the years of obscurity were not deserved, for this set is a near-classic. Harrow is heard in her early prime singing such veteran songs as All Too Soon, On the Sunny Side of the Street, the seven-minute Blues for Yesterday, and the title cut (originally done by Ida Cox in the 1920s). A more modern stylist (although influenced by Billie Holiday a little) than the material she performed at the time, Harrow is joined by such top mainstream players as trumpeter Buck Clayton (who provided the arrangements), tenorman Buddy Tate, trombonist Dickie Wells, and pianist Dick Wellstood. Highly recommended, Harrow's debut date has plenty of spirit and enthusiasm.

    Musicians:

    • Nancy Harrow (vocal)

    • Buck Clayton (trumpet, conductor, arranger)

    • Buddy Tate (tenor saxophone)

    • Dickie Wells (trombone)

    • Danny Bank (baritone saxophone)

    • Dick Wellstood (piano)

    • Kenny Burrell (guitar)

    • Milt Hinton (bass)

    Production: Nat Hentoff

    About Pure Pleasure

At the beginning of the 90s, in the early days of audiophile vinyl re-releases, the situation was fairly straightforward. Companies such as DCC, Mobile Fidelity, Classic Records and, of course, Pure Pleasure all maintained a mutual, unwritten ethical code: we would only use analogue tapes to manufacture records.

During the course of the present vinyl hype, many others have jumped on the bandwagon in the hope of securing a corner of the market. Very often they are not so ethical and use every imaginable source to master from: CDs, LPs, digital files, MP3s - or employed existent tools from the 80s and 90s for manufacturing.

A digital delay is gladly used when cutting a lacquer disc because tape machines with an analogue delay have become quite rare and are therefore expensive. When cutting the lacquer, the audio signal is delayed by one LP revolution against the signal, which controls the cutter head, and for this a digital delay is very often employed. Of course, the resultant sound signal is completely digital and thus only as good as this delay.

We should like to emphasize that Pure Pleasure Records on principle only uses the original master tape as the basis for the entirely analogue cutting of lacquer discs. In addition, the pressing tool is newly manufactured as a matter of principle.

We only employ existing tools for manufacturing if an improved result is not forthcoming, e.g. the title Elvis Is Back, which was mastered by Steve Hoffman and Kevin Gray, or several titles from our Philips Classics series, which in any case Willem Makkee cut from the original masters at the Emil Berliner Studios in the 90s. It goes without saying that we only used the mother and that new tools were made for our production.

To put it in a nutshell: we can ensure you that our releases are free from any kind of digital effects and that the lacquer discs are newly cut.

    Valkyrja

Double-LP On Clear Vinyl With Gatefold Jacket

Valkyrja, the 7 full-length album from the Faroe Islands natives TÝR, is a concept album with a story line based loosely around an anonymous Viking age warrior who leaves his woman and goes off to impress the Valkyrie on the battlefield so that she may bring him to Valhalla, or to Fólkvangr, the home of Freyja-the goddess associated with love, sexuality, beauty, fertility, gold, sorcery, war, and death. One can say the album is also indirectly about women and how they affect men and what men will do to impress and obtain women. Frontman and founder Heri Joensen goes on to explain; the woman that the warrior leaves may represent the earthly women. Freyja, The Lady Of The Slain, may represent the perfection of Women, and the Valkyrie is the link between the two, taking men from earthly to godly women.

Nina Simone's sixth album for Philips Records was Wild Is the Wind, released in 1966. The album was compiled from several recordings that were left over from sessions for previous Philips albums. The song Four Women was released as a single, and gained attention when banned by the New York jazz focused radio station WLIB due to concern over the lyrics. Wounded Rhymes

Produced by Bjorn Yttling of Peter, Bjorn & John and recorded in Stockholm, Wounded Rhymes is the follow up to Lykke Li's critically-acclaimed debut, Youth Novels. Channeling the demise of The Shangri-La's Leader of the Pack, women under the influence, ladies and gentlemen of the canyon, a Kung-fu Marianne Faithful, and an armed Nancy Sinatra on peyote, Lykke Li has created a ten song album that sounds like no other. The record is packed full of pounding, voodoo drums, girl group gang vocals, sparkling guitar lines, woozy keyboards, love unrequited, hope reignited and her own very powerful voice, sounding bigger and bolder than ever before.
