The Best Of Booker T. And The M.G.'s

The Original Atlantic Soul Masters 180g Audiophile Vinyl Series Continues..

As a young teenager growing up in Memphis, Tennessee, Booker T. Jones had the amazing talent to play a number of instruments and he played them well. Mastering them well enough to land him work at the famous Stax Records label as a sideman, while still attending high school. It was during this time he met up with future guitar legend Steve Cropper and drummer great Al Jackson and later formed the Stax wrecking crew known as Booker T. & The M.G.s.

This amazing quartet, whom later added the amazing Donald Duck Dunn on bass went on to record a treasure trove of funk, soul and rock masterpieces, which have gone on to become some of the greatest sides ever waxed in modern soul history! With chart topping soul rockers like Green Onions, Red Beans And Rice and Hip Hug-Her, the good folks at Atlantic honored this famed quartet with their own greatest hits album, the magnificent The Best Of Booker T. & The M.G.s in 1968. This original album has been out of print for many years, and for several decades in the vinyl format...that is until now.

Friday Music is proud to offer the original Atlantic Records masterpiece The Best Of Booker T. & The M.G.s for the first time on 180g Audiophile Vinyl. Mastered impeccably from the original Atlantic Records tapes by Joe Reagoso at Friday Music Studios with Kevin Gray.

This best of album features all of their original hit recordings mentioned above, as well as more killer funk like Mo Onions, Slim Jenkins Place and Soul Dressing. Plus, super soul interpretations of The Rascals Groovin and George Gershwins Summertime.

They have also included the original rare album cover elements featuring the hip Baron Wolman/Rolling Stone photo and the excellent packaging design of Haig Adishian. This is one collection just made for the audiophile vinyl domain and will be a perfect companion to our recent Atlantic Records soul offerings from Wilson PickettThe Best Of Wilson Pickett and Solomon BurkeThe Best Of Solomon Burke.

    He's A Rebel

Although it was assembled quickly in 1963 to take advantage of the chart success of its eponymous title anthem, the Crystals' second album is a near-perfect summation of this seminal girl group's effortless appeal and the surging majesty of Phil Spector's production genius. Between the group's winsome vocals, the massed muscle of Spector's legendary studio band the Wrecking Crew, and the stellar songwriting of such Brill Building pros as Carole King, Gerry Goffin, Barry Mann, Cynthia Weil and Doc Pomus, He's A Rebel is one of the most beloved items in the Philles label catalog.

While most listeners didn't know it at the time, the Gene Pitney-penned He's A Rebel was actually recorded by Darlene Love and her studio group the Blossoms, and released under the Crystals' name. Love also takes the lead on the effervescent hit He's Sure the Boy I Love. Under any name, however, these are among the most thrilling items in the Spector canon.

Along with such memorable early Crystals classics as Uptown, There's No Other (Like My Baby) and Oh Yeah, Maybe Baby, He's A Rebel also features the controversial Goffin/King composition He Hit Me (It Felt Like A Kiss). Originally released as a single in 1962, the song's emotionally raw subject matter scared off radio programmers, and Spector quickly had it withdrawn from release. In the years since, the song has gained near-mythical status, and its inclusion here is a handy reminder of the power of Spector's singular artistry.

    Gentle On My Mind

It was the first to go to No. 1 on the country music charts and reach the platinum sales mark of 1 million albums sold. Mystery

With a wrecking crew rhythm section, debonair vocals, and guitar concoction of one part shred and two parts soul, Blk Jks shoot an African music sensibility through the tenets of rock. It's easy to politicize them. Here's a band that's instantly young, black and fly even as they reclaim styles that have been stolen, watered down, and regurgitated for generations. And yet to get caught up in anything but their sound is to sell this phenomenon short, because as musicians - as artists - Blk Jks simply cook.

The first wave of the surf music explosion spawned countless short-lived bands and one-shot studio projects. Many of those projects were quickly forgotten, but a handful have continued to inspire hushed reverence among surf aficionados. The latter category includes the Catalinas lone album, originally released in 1964 and out of print for more than four decades.

An all-star studio supergroup featuring legendary producer Terry Melcher, future Beach Boy Bruce Johnston and fabled Wrecking Crew members Hal Blaine, Jerry Cole, Steve Douglas, Leon Russell, Billy Strange and Tommy Tedesco, the Catalinas lived up to their impressive pedigree. In addition to rarely-heard tunes penned by Bobby Darin and a pre-Byrds Roger McGuinn, the album features potent versions of such surf and hot rod classics as Surfin U.S.A., Wipe Out, Banzai Washout, I Get Around and Summer Means Fun.

Long a rare collectors item, Fun Fun Fun is now back in its original vinyl format, remastered from the original analog tapes and pressed on high-definition vinyl, with complete original cover art.

    Sentenced To Life

Southern Lord is proud to unleash the second album from Seattle's barbaric wrecking crew that is Black Breath! Sentenced To Life is the highly anticipated follow-up to the band's raging 2010 debut album, Heavy Breathing. The new album projects an even more vile, metallic sonic attack than its predecessor with a bit less rock and roll swagger and more full-on crushing death metal rage.

This is a product of furious creativity jammed into a short span of time, written in the seemingly endless Winter after returning from their November 2010 European tour. Bearing 10 thunderous tracks in just under 33 minutes, Sentenced to Life features such smashing Black Breath hits as Feast of the Damned, Doomed, Forced Into Possession, Home of the Grave and of course the title anthem Sentenced to Life.

The band once again recorded at God City Studios with Kurt Ballou (Converge, Nails, High on Fire), and had the finished product mastered by Alan Douches at West West Side. Easily the band's most powerful recording to date!

    Shangri La

Barely a year after his debut, in November 2013 Jake Bugg returns with its bar-raising follow-up, Shangri La. The album shares a title with the Malibu studio where it was made, once the 70s haven of Bob Dylan and The Band, now the creative hib of legendary producer Rick Rubin, the recording Titan whose jawdropping c.v. spans from Def Jam and Johnny Cash to Adele and Kanye West.

Rubin's assembled wrecking crew of Shangri La session regulars includes guitarist Matt Sweeney (Bonnie `Prince' Billy, Neil Diamond, Endless Boogie), bassist Jason Lader (The Mars Volta), and drummers Chad Smith (Red Hot Chili Peppers) and Pete Thomas (Elvis Costello). Yet for all its stellar cast and production kudos, the real star of Shangri La is, unquestionably, Bugg himself.

Asked to compare Shangri La with its predecessor, Bugg concludes: 'My first album felt like a list of songs, whereas this one feels like a whole entity with something to say. Or if my first album was the colour of grey reality, this one's the colour of the sun'. The colour of our planet's nearest star. Or maybe the sound of a new star intensifying their musical colours. Listening to his second album, you dare to wonder where a talent like Jake Bugg could find themselves in ten years' time. His prediction: 'Up front for England'.

    Hot Rod Dance Party

    Limited Edition

As one of the busiest and most versatile session guitarists of the 60s, Jerry Cole recorded with a litany of legends, including Phil Spector, the Beach Boys and the Byrds. But to those in the know, hes renowned for his own incredible surf and hot rod instrumentals, which he delivered on a series of vintage albums with his band the Spacemen. Coles modernistic recordings, however, sound completely different from other surf-and-drag releases of the period, with expansive arrangements that often featured elements of jazz and exotica, the better to showcase the guitarists inventive, assertive playing.

One of Coles best-loved LPs is this amazing 1964 release, which includes contributions from many of the same L.A.-based musicians who played alongside Cole in the now-legendary session ensemble known as the Wrecking Crew. Coles powerful guitar work powers such turbo-charged numbers as Night Rumble, Border Run, Stinger and Hot Rod Queen, which live up to the albums title and then some!

Sundazed has lovingly remastered this masterful guitar extravaganza from the original analog tapes, carefully reproduced its complete original cover art and pressed it on high-quality 180 gram vinylall the better to keep this party humming!

    Zip-A-Dee Doo Dah

One of the most talented acts in Phil Spector's stellar recording stable, Bob B. Soxx and the Blue Jeans featured the great Darlene Love, one of Spector's favorite vocal muses; Fanita James, who also sang alongside Love in the ubiquitous studio vocal group the Blossoms; and Bob B. Soxx himself, aka renowned singer Bobby Sheen, a legend in West Coast R&B circles. The trio's uncanny abilities provided Spector with an ideal vehicle to perfect his musical formula, making the trio's 1963 album Zip-A-Dee-Doo-Dah one of the most enchanting items in the Philles label catalog.

Recorded in the hallowed environs of L.A.'s Gold Star Studios with backup from the legendary Wrecking Crew, Zip-A-Dee-Doo-Dah finds the trio cutting loose on a high-energy set that includes the Disney-inspired title hit and the infectious Why Do Lovers Break Each Other's Heart? Love's powerful vocals are also featured on "My Heart Beat a Little Faster and the Jackie DeShannon-penned Jimmy Baby, while the ever-soulful Sheen is showcased on such tunes as Dear (Here Comes My Baby) and Everything's Gonna Be All Right. Meanwhile, a left-field reading of Woody Guthrie's This Land Is Your Land and the album-closing instrumental Dr. Kaplan's Office demonstrate Spector's quirkier side.

    IV

Records like Psychic Temple IV aren't made anymore. Maybe they never were. There is a magic present that some mistake for tubes or tape but it's no more complicated than putting the right musicians together with the right songs.

Produced and composed by band/cult leader Chris Schlarb, Psychic Temple IV is what happens when 87-year old Max Bennett (bassist on Joni Mitchell's Court and Spark and Hissing of Summer Lawns) plays with 26-year old drummer Tabor Allen (of Cherry Glazerr). British rock legend Terry Reid sings a trio of duets written and arranged for the only artist nicknamed Superlungs. When keyboardist Mick Rossi wrote to say he would be in town with the Philip Glass Ensemble, songs were composed and a new date was put on the calendar.

Psychic Temple IV was recorded in Los Angeles over a series of eight large scale sessions. In the spirit of the classic Wrecking Crew sessions for Phil Spector and the Beach Boys, the band was often tasked with recording four songs per session. Vocals were added as soon as the rhythm section tracks were cut with Terry Reid, Arlene Deradoorian, and Nedelle Torrisi joining Chris in the studio to work out harmony parts and sing live together.

After making his vocal debut on III, Schlarb toured the country twice over. His voice is assured and he seems to have lived with these songs (and the idea of singing) for some time. His melodies are soulful yet unpredictable having transferred his ability to write for instrumental ensembles to pop music. And yet the exploratory spirit of the first Psychic Temple album still abides. The music has been poured over with both care and abandon. There is magic in Psychic Temple IV. It's no more complicated than that.

    Save For A Rainy Day

Mastered from the Original Mono Reels!

It was a Hollywood music publicist's fondest dream and worst nightmare, all at the same time. Jan Berry, the lead vocalist, composer and producer of famed surf/hot rod duo Jan & Dean had crashed his Corvette on the Sunset Strip late at night on April 19, 1966, almost killing himself. Jan remained in a coma for some time afterwards, and his rehab would take years rather than months. The hitmaking partnership of Jan & Dean, an act that had launched 14 winners into the national Top 40 over the previous six years, had come to a screeching halt. Or had it?

Dean Torrence, singer of the duo's ozone-scraping high parts, its specialist in vocal-stacking and its idea man when it came to personal presentation, decided to carry on single-handed while his partner was incapacitated. With the assistance of a few celebrated friends and session men who were regulars in Phil Spector's Wrecking Crew, bassist Joe Osborn, pianist Larry Knechtel, guitarist James Burton and drummer Mickey Jones, Dean began recording tracks whenever he could in Osborn's North Hollywood garage for what would become the new Jan & Dean album, Save for a Rainy Day.

The album was a spectacular concept, with its rain-related songs, both new and old, all linked together with the sound of a summer thunderstorm. Dean issued the LP in very limited quantities on his own J&D label and the album became the ultimate rarity in the Jan & Dean catalog. Enter Sundazed Music, who, in 1996, purchased the masters and rights to the album from Dean and gave it a proper, expanded release. Now Save for a Rainy Day appears on Sundazed on limited edition 180g vinyl, mastered from the pristine mono reels, in all its original glory!

    Live At The Jazz Mill

    Pressed On Red Vinyl

Unearthed tape from a jazz icon. Thanks to a 21-year-old with a tape machine, we can all experience the majesty of guitar legend Barney Kessel at his 1954 best!

Even if you don't know Barney Kessel, you know Barney Kessel -- as a first-string member of the group of LA session musicians nicknamed The Wrecking Crew, Kessel's guitar is heard on just about every LA-based hit you'd care to name from the 60s, including songs by the Monkees and The Beach Boys' legendary Smile LP. And that's Kessel's playing on the famous fight music from the Star Trek TV series. He was regarded as the very best of the session guitarists by just about everyone around, and guitarists everywhere site him as an influence.

But before he played rock and roll, Kessel was a jazz pioneer -- as one of the leading lights of the hard-bop movement, his jazz guitar was legendary, and he was ranked the No. 1 guitarist in Down Beat and Playboy for numerous years. He played with Sonny Rollins and Oscar Peterson (and Chico Marx -- yes, that Chico Marx!) as well as leading his own super-tight group. On albums such as The Poll Winners, Kessel defined the bop style with a jazz power trio, creating a body of work that made him a legend.

Live At The Jazz Mill is a unique artifact -- recorded on a tape recorder by young jazz fan Jack Miller, this live recording catches Barney Kessel in the middle of his run at the Jazz Mill with a great four-piece band. The collection, gleaned from a couple of nights' best recordings, features Kessel's spirited take on such Songbook classics as Get Happy and Stardust, not to mention the Gershwin great Embraceable You. It's pressed on red vinyl and wrapped in a sleeve which captures the unique vibe of jazz graphics of the 1950s. Get with Barney Kessel, and get with a true pioneer of the jazz form!

    Are You Serious (Awaiting Repress)

Andrew Bird has always been highly respected and has held a captive audience with his story telling prowess, but it's with his new album, Are You Serious, that he has made a breakthrough record. Coming out via his new label home, Loma Vista Recordings (Spoon, St. Vincent, HEALTH), and produced by Tony Berg, the album propels him into a new category of American songwriters. It's his most direct lyrically to date with key contributions from Fiona Apple and Blake Mills.

Three years ago while traveling west to California to start a new life with his wife and young child they stopped at the family farm in rural Illinois for two weeks to catch their breath. The previous two years had been intense to say the least: raising a child in New York City as his wife battled a serious illness. With these dark days behind them he spent the next seven days on the front porch writing the lyrics for what became Are You Serious. It's a breakthrough for him in that it gets to the quick of the matter. This is the record he needed to make right now and is certain to put him in the leading class of American songwriter.

The album was put together with a rigor akin to a novelist or playwright and musically crafted like a wrecking crew session where you have to be good right in that moment. There's little folksy quaintness or whimsical flights of fancy. There's less wordplay and more intent to process some difficult times that he went through. From the album art, created by the godfather of conceptual art John Baldessari to foregoing his traditional writing process, Bird has emerged from challenging times and a new process with an album that may be his best.

The first single Capsized" begins to take you down the path that Bird so carefully crafted on the record, speaking from an unguarded point of view while keeping with the melodic, syntactic standards that he has held true to since the beginning of his career.

    Good Times!

Who's ready to have some fun with The Monkees as they celebrate their 50th anniversary? With a tour kicking off in May and the group's first new album in 20 years, GOOD TIMES!, releasing, Monkee-mania will be taking 2016 by storm!

GOOD TIMES! features all three surviving band members - Micky Dolenz, Michael Nesmith, and Peter Tork. The unmistakable voice of the late Davy Jones is also included with a vintage vocal featured on one song. To produce the new album, the band found the perfect musical co-conspirator in Grammy® and Emmy®-winning songwriter Adam Schlesinger (Fountains Of Wayne, Ivy).

Much like The Monkees' early albums, GOOD TIMES! features tracks written specifically for the band by some of the music world's most gifted songwriters, including Rivers Cuomo (Weezer), Ben Gibbard (Death Cab For Cutie), Andy Partridge (XTC), and Zach Rogue (Rogue Wave) as well as a song co-written by Noel Gallagher and Paul Weller. The album also includes songwriting contributions by Nesmith ("I Know What I Know") and Tork as well as producer Schlesinger.

To help bring the anniversary full circle, The Monkees completed songs for GOOD TIMES! that were originally recorded and written for the group during the 60s, including "Love To Love" by Neil Diamond, which features a vintage vocal by Jones. Harry Nilsson wrote the title track "Good Times," which he recorded at a session with Nesmith in January 1968. The production was never completed, so the band returned to the original session tape (featuring Nilsson's guide vocal) and have created a duet with his close friend Dolenz. "Good Times" will mark the first time Dolenz and Nilsson have sung together since Dolenz' May 1973 single "Daybreak." Other vintage 1960's tracks included on GOOD TIMES! feature L.A.'s famed "Wrecking Crew" of session musicians.

"This is one of the most exciting Monkee projects I've been involved in for decades!" says Dolenz. "Working with Adam Schlesinger has been a pure delight and the opportunity to sing a duet with my old buddy, Harry Nilsson, is just beyond cool!"

    The Complete LHI Recordings

Lee Hazlewood's LHI label only put out interesting albums. Yet despite the psychedelic cowboy's success with Nancy Sinatra and more, being on Lee Hazlewood Industries was no fast-track to success. Gorgeous and talented Detroit, Michigan girl group Honey Ltd had all the makings of a hit band, yet they disappeared after releasing just one album in 1968, a vinyl rarity that now regularly fetches upwards of $2,000.

Light In The Attic Records is now looking to set the record straight. Having previously explored both the back catalog of Lee Hazlewood and his LHI label via the You Turned My Head Around 45s Box Set, Honey Ltd's The Complete LHI Recordings presents everything the group ever recorded. Fans of The Ronettes, The Shangri-Las and Pentangle are in for a treat - Honey Ltd's music blended social commentary with harmony-drenched, psych-soul pop. Even opening track, 'Warrior', describes the mood of the times, as America sunk into the Vietnam war: "We must kill more people; strong men are what we need!

Laura Polkinghome, Marsha Jo Temmer and sisters Joan and Alexandra Sliwin are the girls with the angelic voices. Hailing from Detroit, the four members of Honey Ltd grew up in a culture of soul music and dance shows, yet forming a band was never part of the plan. It simply happened after they sung together in a Wayne State University cafeteria and found they'd silenced the room. By 1967 they had formed a group known as the Mama Cats and were playing shows with local singer Bob Seger. By 1968, against a backdrop of rioting in Detroit, they'd hauled over to Los Angeles to give music a go, and it's there that they hitch-hiked to an audition with Lee Hazlewood on Sunset Boulevard. At the time, Lee Hazlewood Industries was in its prime: the money flowed and the roster swelled. "I think Lee just sat there for a while and listened, looking at us," Temmer recalls. "He said, 'Yeah, I think we can do something.' You know - immediately!" Before long, LHI had the band in the studio with crack session music unit The Wrecking Crew.

These were not enlightened times for girl groups. The group were re-named Honey Ltd by Hazlewood, and were put to work on an album without even realizing it. The band were under the impression they were simply recording singles. As a result, the band were unphased by Honey Ltd's commercial failure.

The parent label, however, did notice the album's failure but the girls continued on. By the end of 1968, the band joined Bob Hope on the USO tour and headed to Thailand to perform for soldiers. In 1969, Alex married and quit the band, their tenure on LHI was effectively terminated and the remaining members regrouped as country-rock group Eve. But like their music, the girls' outlook remained resolutely sunny.

"Its all a karmic equation, isn't it? Temmer recalled. "So many things to experience and learn and humbly let go of in this journey. Our friendship is based on love - we love each other always have always will."
