    Sylvie Vartan 1961-1962

1961-1962 compiles some of the earliest recordings from one of France's most iconic and longest lasting yÉ-yÉ pop stars, released way back when she was known by French journalists as "la collÉgienne du twist" or, translated, "the twisting schoolgirl".
Though only 16-18 years old at the time of these recordings, her mature vocal perfomances on this LP belie her age as she rips through French language versions of Elvis' "Don't Be Cruel", Ray Charles' "What'd I Say?", The Everly Brothers "Bye
Bye Love" and lots more! Another fine offering from Doxy for the Francophile in all of us. This title is a companion piece to DOY681LP and together they comprise Vartan's complete recordings from 1961-1962.

    Evolution (Mono & Stereo)

Double LP Package Includes Both Mono & Stereo Versions

For many Hollies enthusiasts, Evolution (1967) is considered the band's most accessible blend of pop and psychedelia. The quintet were headed into musical territories beyond simply moon-June-bloom and boy-meets-girl lyrics coupled with the tightly constructed vocal harmonies that had become their calling card. Nowhere is this more evident than in the tripped-out cover art from Dutch multimedia artists Seemon Kooer, Marijke Kooer, Josje Leeger, and Barry Finch -- known collectively as Fool. Although Carrie-Anne could be considered an extension of the trite, somewhat predictable Brit pop, there are clear indications of new horizons on cuts such as the modish You Need Love, the arguably passÉ distorted electric guitar on Have You Ever Loved Somebody, and the wailing fretwork on the driving freakbeat rocker Then the Heartaches Begin. Graham Nash (guitar/vocals), Allan Clarke (guitar/vocals), Tony Hicks (guitar/banjo/dulcimer/vocals), Bobby Elliott (drums), and new recruit Bernie Calvert (bass/vocals) -- who replaced original member Eric Haydock in the spring of 1966 -- were also taking different approaches in their writing and arranging, as heard on the trippy Headed for a Fall. On this tune, most prominent is the unusual six-eight time signature, coupled with Hicks' inversion of the unmistakable banjo, which is similar to the sound he conjured up on the hit Stop, Stop, Stop. However, somewhat more atypical of the Nash-era band are the light and limber acoustic and uptempo Stop Right There, or the baroque Ye Olde Toffee Shoppe.

    This Is Christmas

Rather than a do a rehash of many of the obvious traditional tunes that fill special holiday albums by contemporary performers, maestro Luther Vandross opted for the task of creating no fewer than 7 of the 10 tracks included on his 1995 Christmas release. The result is an album that demonstrates why Vandross is still considered the preeminent black male vocalist of close to two decades: as on typical Vandross recordings, the production is crisp and strong and the vocals are flawless.

As usual, he employs the cream of musicians and background vocalists (including the inimitable Cissy Houston and Darlene Love, who is featured on the Motown-like duet I Listen to the Bells)--the perfect backdrop for Vandross's distinctive sound, exemplified on the standout title track. The Mistle Toe Jam has the party-like feel of Vandross sides like Bad Boy and the more recent Nights in Harlem, while Every Year, Every Christmas (cowritten with Richard Marx) is a soulful slow jam.

A surprising reading of the Rodgers and Hammerstein classic My Favorite Things shows that if Vandross ever chose to, he could easily do a fine album of jazz standards, while O Come All Ye Faithful (featuring an all-star choir that includes Valerie Simpson) is given the album's most traditional reading. Standouts include the gorgeous Please Come Home for Christmas and the almost funky A Kiss for Christmas. Easily one of the best Christmas albums around. --David Nathan

Lee Hazlewoodism: Its Cause and Cure

The second of his MGM trilogy-1967's peculiarly named Lee Hazlewoodism: Its Cause And Cure-took on countrified French ye-ye ("The Girls In Paris"), a tale of a young bullfighter built on Spanish guitar and choral cowboys ("Jose"), a string-drenched song about the passing of time ("The Old Man And His Guitar"), and a western epic about a Native American tribe ("The Nights"). And that was just the first four tracks. Elsewhere, the honky tonk madness of "Suzi Jane Is Back In Town," the Byrds-like jangle of "In Our Time" and-in the bonus tracks-an instrumental named "Batman" confirm this to be one of Hazlewood's most far-ranging, far-out LPs ever!

Lia Mice is the experimental pop project of Eleanor C Mice (nÉe Logan). After spending her teens touring Australia in punk and soul groups she lurked the Brooklyn noise scene for half a decade. In late 2012 at the end of a European tour in support of her debut solo album (originally released under the moniker Happy New Year) she became stranded in France when her return flight to Brooklyn was cancelled due to Hurricane Sandy. Waiting for her replacement flight, she passed the time in Lyon penning songs in a friend's living room. Within a week she had decided to relocate to France for good. The songs became the genesis of 'I Love You', out October 7 on Old Flame Records - LiaMice's second solo album, and first experiment in danceable tempos, inspired by new music uncovered during in her first year living in France: in the grooves of yÉ-yÉ singles; on the dancefloors of converted boat-venues; in the theme songs of classic French cinema and on the iPods of neighborhood house parties.

Long before Britain started swinging in the mid-1960s, France was the bastion for cool European pop sounds. Sultry young French women, heavy on mascara and dreamy innocence, cast a spell with what became known as 'Les AnnÉes YÉ YÉ'.

    Personne d'Autre (Out Of Stock)

French singer-songwriter and fashion icon Francoise Hardy will release her 24th studio album, her first in six years via Arts Music.

Hardy achieved immediate success in the early 1960s with her million-selling debut Tous les garçons et les filles on the Vogue label. The eternally chic pop star and actress found herself at the forefront of the French music scene, as a leading figure of the influential yÉ-yÉmovement. Mick Jagger once described Hardy as his ideal woman, Bob Dylan dedicated a poem to her, and she has worked alongside greats such as Leonard Cohen, Serge Gainsbourg, Michel Berger, and Patrick Modiano. To this day she remains one of France's most iconic singers.

Personne d'Autre features 10 original songs - including one sung in English, You're My Home, penned by Yael Naim, a cover of Michel Berger's Seras-tu là and an adaption of Finnish band Poet Of The Fall's Sleep.

Of the album, Françoise Hardy says For many-very reasonable-reasons, I wasn't planning on making another album. Circumstances decided otherwise, starting with me falling in love with a song I heard completely by chance, Sleep by Finnish bandPoets of the Fall. I played it to Erick Benzi who enjoyed it, then to my surprise sent me several beautiful melodies of his own composition that inspired me to write some lyrics. La Grande Sophie, who knew that I had started writing again, emailed me out of the blue a wonderful song called Le Large (Sail Away), Pascale Daniel came to me with a haunting melody, then a song by Yael Naim in English which moved me so deeply that it made me cry... The album practically made itself, and all under the talented and benevolent leadership of Erick Benzi, without whom none of this would have been possible.
