The Giver is the fifth album from David Hillyard & The Rocksteady 7, following Hillyard’s 2014 solo album, California. Based out of New York but relying on a global cast of musicians, David has been directing the group’s mix of Jamaican roots music with American Jazz, Soul, and R&B since 1997. The Giver features Jamaican percussion legend and Rocksteady 7 regular Larry McDonald. Also featured prominently is vocalist Sean Wheeler, best known as frontman of Throwrag. The album features renditions of John Coltrane’s “Song of the Underground Railroad” and Gil Scott Heron’s “Home is Where the Hatred Is”.

The Giver was recorded at Hen House Studios in Venice, CA, mastered by Bernie Grundman, and pressed at Pallas Group in Germany.

Sting & Shaggy will release their new collaborative, island-inspired album, entitled 44/876, via Island Records.

Sting, wove Jamaican rhythms into his early work with The Police as well as his solo repertoire. While Shaggy, born and raised in Kingston, Jamaica and cutting his musical teeth in the dance hall clubs of Brooklyn and Manhattan. The two initially joined creative forces to record “Don’t Make Me Wait” as a tribute to the Caribbean sounds that influenced them both – and ended up recording an entire album full of joy, melody and uplifting music.

44/876 was recorded in Jamaica and New York with Sting & Shaggy being joined by various musicians and writers including the legendary Robbie Shakespeare of Sly and Robbie, dancehall sensation Aidonia, Morgan Heritage, Branford Marsalis, Agent Sasco and Sting’s longtime guitarist, Dominic Miller as well as writers Taranchyla, Dwayne “iLL Wayno” Shippy, Shane Hoosong, Machine Gun Funk and Patexx. The sessions were produced in part by Sting International (“Oh, Carolina,” “Boombastic” and “It Wasn’t Me,”) and by Martin Kierszenbaum who has previously written/produced songs for Sting, Madonna and Lady Gaga. Long out of print, Dubb Everlasting is a highly rated Dub album by noted sound engineer Errol Brown.

Duke Reid's nephew Errol Brown got his start as a junior sound engineer at his uncle's legendary Treasure Isle studio. There he made his first tentative steps in production and 1975's Dubb Everlasting was the result. Three years later followed by Dub Expression.

Key to this success was the crack outfit from the Channel One studio, the Revolutionaires. Featuring the eminent talents of Sly Dunbar and Robbie Shakespeare to name but two, the band's expansive skill, taste and restraint is evident and contributes to the success of this album. What sets Brown's Dub albums apart from the herd, is that there seems to be a lot more happening on them. Sure there are the spacey, chill moments as well, but more instruments than the bass and drums are given a chance to shine more often. He's left a bit more in than most Dub practitioners, which keeps things interesting. Being a sound engineer at heart, he liked to keep things moving along, bringing instruments up in the mix and sparingly using drop-out, which makes it all more effective.

Overall Dubb Everlasting is a neat quite obscure but thoroughly intriguing and satisfying 70s Dub Reggae album.

The sixties were a golden age for Jamaican vocal trios. During the latter half of this incredibly creative decade, a multitude of harmony groups made their mark on the island's music scene, but of these only a relative few possessed the talent and determination to endure beyond the rock steady era.

One trio that not only succeeded, but blossomed following the onset of reggae, is the Pioneers, who in 1969 became one of the first Jamaican acts to achieve international success with their UK hit, 'Long Shot Kick The Bucket'.

The success of the single was swiftly followed by what became one of Trojan's biggest selling long players of all time, the aptly titled 'Long Shot'.

Comprising new material along with the best of their recent Jamaican singles to date, the collection is a must-have for all self-respecting fans of boss reggae and is now finally available once again, looking and sounding better than ever!

This classic album from 1973 saw its creator, Lee 'Scratch' Perry exploring synths and starting to develop his Black Ark sound - the enigmatic producer was at the time in the process of building his famous studio and honing his ideas about dub as a musical form.

The LP opens with the eerie "Kentucky Skank", Perry's ode to KFC, complete with frying chicken sounds, spliced between winding tapes, a ghostly trumpet, and futuristic Moog synthesizer, overdubbed at London's Chalk Farm studios.

U Roy's "Double Six" and I Roy's "High Fashion" and "Hail Stones" illustrate just how strong The Upsetter's deejay material had become, while versions of the Chi-Lites' "We Are Neighbours", Sam & Dave's "Soul Man" and a re-working of Al Green's "Love and Happiness" (retitled "Jungle Lion") all betray the funky soul influence that was increasingly shaping his work.

The backing tracks illustrate the producer at his best; the audio spectrum is fully differentiated while spatial placement an important component - something it would take years for him to achieve at the Black Ark.

Arguably the most influential live reggae album ever, Babylon by Bus captures Bob Marley and the Wailers during the European leg of their Kaya tour in the spring of 1978. The success of this set was not entirely unexpected, however. If the universal and widespread acclaim of LIVE! -- their first concert recording -- was an indicator, all involved knew that a Bob Marley & the Wailers performance contained unique energies and a vibe all of its own. Sharply contrasting the somewhat pastoral grooves of the Kaya album, Babylon by Bus possesses a more aggressive sound -- which was a trademark of this particular band. Tyrone Downie's progressive rock keyboard flavors on "Exodus," as well his judiciously located percussive clavinet accentuations during "Punky Reggae Party," lock in with Aston "Familyman" Barrett's viscous basslines to create something akin to psychedelic reggae or even along the lines of Parliament/Funkadelic. Likewise, "Heathen" highlights Anderson's explosive guitar leads, which are distinctly reminiscent of Eddie Hazel from his early days with Funkadelic.

"Sufferer" was one of the classic tunes from the skinhead or boss reggae era of the late sixties, with its popularity, along with a number of subsequent follow-ups, leading to a debut album of the same name by the vocal trio who had burst upon the Jamaican music scene in 1967: The Kingstonians.

Showcasing a dozen of the group's best known works to date for esteemed Kingston-based producer, Derrick Harriott, the LP features a number of sizable Jamaican hits, including "Singer Man", "Hold Down", "Nice Nice", as well as the best-selling title track.

Soon after its release, the group moved on to work with other Jamaican producers of note, but unable to sustain their popularity, all but disappeared from the local music scene by the late seventies.

Meanwhile, this, their one and only long player, continued to attract interest and today is regarded one of the finest ever vinyl collections of boss reggae sounds, with original copies now highly prized, not to mention, extremely valuable collector's items.

Trojan's First Release From 50 Years Ago!

In honour of the 50th year anniversary of the UK's first Trojan label, Music On Vinyl proudly make available once more the album that got the ball rolling back in the summer of 1967.

The first of a series of classic albums from the legendary Trojan catalogue that will see issue throughout the year, the erroneously titled 'Duke Reid Rock's Steady' was originally released by Island Records to promote their new Trojan label, an imprint launched to specifically showcase the productions of legendary Treasure Isle Records boss, Arthur 'Duke' Reid.

Simultaneously issued in Jamaica as 'Rock Steady Beat', the LP highlights the best of Reid's output from the preceding months and proved so popular back in '67 that pressings quickly sold out on both sides of the Atlantic.

Now, 50 years on, lovers of the coolest sound to emanate from Jamaica's golden shores can finally own a copy of this seminal collection without needing to spend a duke's ransom for the pleasure!

On Undercurrent, the vulnerability felt throughout the lyrical narrative comes from acceptance in uncertainty. It’s a musical reframing of the Jewish philosophical differences between the constant of faith and the immediacy of trust. Together, Matisyahu and his band have crafted a fully realized concept album about the forces within. Early 1980, UB40 scored their first success with ''Food For Thought'', reaching high in the charts. By the time they released their first album they were already so successful that they had signed off on unemployment benefit, leading to the stamped Signing Off featured on form 40, for the sleeve of their debut album. The first dub album ever to reach the album charts in the U.K. included ''One In Ten'' and ''Don't Slow Down''.

In 1983 the band put on a new project, boasting ten cover versions of Jamaican hits and, contrary to low expectations, it became a huge hit and the band's first number one album. Tracks included are ''Cherry Oh Baby'' and ''Please Don't Make Me Cry'' and ''Red Red Wine''. The latter was a rather poppy song and became the band's biggest-selling single ever, entailing their definitive worldwide breakthrough.

There have been lots of collaborations through the years and most of these became huge hit songs. Together with Chrissie Hynde UB40 recorded two singles: ''I Got You Babe'' (1985) and ''Breakfast In Bed'' (1988). They teamed up with Afrika Bambaataa for ''Reckless'' (1988) and with Robert Palmer the band released ''I'll Be Your Baby Tonight'' (1990), just to name a few.

Living reggae heroes Toots and the Maytals unveiled their first ever acoustic album in the summer of 2012, to coincide with the 50th anniversary of Jamaican Independence Day.

Grammy® award-winning Toots Hibbert was the first to use the word 'reggae' on tape in his 1968 classic, "Do The Reggay," and over the last six decades has defined and redefined the sound. With his acoustic album release Unplugged on Strawberry Hill, the legend continues.

Toots lures you into his performances, whether totally amplified or, on this recording, acoustic and all natural. Heartfelt and soulful, every minute of these recording is straight from the heart. It showcases his soul side, and with his raw vocals sound when he was in his 20s.

The album was recorded at sunset with the Blue Mountains providing the stunning backdrop. The gorgeous, sun-kissed acoustic session depicts a soulful and intimate side to revered classics like "Funky Kingston," "Pressure Drop" and "54-46." The loose rhythms and Toots' trademark vocal make Unplugged on Strawberry Hill the perfect soundtrack for summer.

In 1954 Ken Khouri had numbered among the first far-sighted entrepreneurs to produce mento records with local musicians (mento is Jamaica’s original indigenous music) before progressing to opening Jamaica’s first record manufacturing plant. Three years later he moved his operation to Foreshore Road (later renamed Marcus Garvey Drive) where, with the assistance of the inestimable Graeme Goodall, he updated and upgraded his recording studio. The importance of this enterprising move was critical to the development of Jamaican music and its influence both profound and far-reaching.

Federal Records was not only the place for the sound system men to record their music but it was also where they had their records manufactured and, consequently, the company enjoyed a near-total monopoly on recording and record pressing in Kingston. In 1963 Ken Khouri sold his one track board to Clement ‘Coxsone’ Dodd, who established Studio One, and Ken imported the first stereo equipment to Jamaica and Federal began making stereo records. The following year WIRL (West Indies Records Limited) opened but the competition served to drive the company on to higher heights. Ken Khouri continued to work on his own productions and, in 1966, the seven-inch release of Hopeton Lewis’ ‘Take It Easy’, recorded under the guidance of Trinidadian guitarist Lynn Taitt, ushered in the rock steady era.

These two essential albums showcase a stunning selection of well-known hits, and not so well-known rarities, from the vast Federal catalog. All tracks have been transferred direct from the master tapes and assembled with the invaluable assistance of Ken Khouri’s son, Paul Khouri, who generously gave Dub Store unlimited access to the Federal tape vaults. The extensive liner notes feature extracts from extensive interviews with Paul Khouri whose knowledgeable recollections of working on Marcus Garvey Drive, not only as a producer but as an engineer and musician, are illuminating and educational. Both sets present an insight into the birth and growth of Federal Records and the Jamaican recording industry and are essential to an understanding of the real roots of reggae music.
